Andrew : Great video! Can you show me how you set the stone next? Also I have learned so much from you in the past four months! I am a retired police officer that has always wanted to learn how to silversmith. I have purchased all the rudimentary equipment including a Smith Little Torch but because I reside in Medina, Ohio USA have no one in my area who gives lessons so I depend on your videos for instruction! I have made a number of coin bezels and bails but would like to start making rings, pendants and bracelets! Please keep the videos coming! Wish you lived close by so I could take lessons directly from you! Keep the great work! Ron Medina, Ohio USA
GREAT VIDEO👍 I am physically disabled and have decided to start a new career in jewelry. These videos have been very, very helpful. I’ve learned things here not taught in standard course work elsewhere. I’m grateful for all the hard work you’ve put into this video series Andrew and hope to thank you personally one day.
I tried many times as a beginner to make a setting the hard way with no formal teachings. This was how I made my wife's engagement ring, the first completed ring and setting I had ever done!
Im a retired hobby machinist working in my shop everyday. One day my girlfriend she asked me to make a ring for her. That got me hooked into jewelry about 2 months.. A good stay at home hobby. Ive already made a couple of good looking wire rings. This is me first look at rings with stones. I look forward to all you videos. Much to learn from a master.
Chaque fois que je vous regarde, j'apprend toujours quelque chose. En plus il est très facile pour moi de vous comprendre avec ce merveilleux accent Britanique!
Amazing craftsmanship, I’ve learned so much from your videos and I cannot thank you enough, it inspires me to keep learning and moving on to try different techniques.
You couldn't have made this video at a better time! I'm struggling with making a mount for two 4mm heart shaped stones right now and this I believe will work perfect! You rock!
started making jewelry around the time this video was uploaded...i saw pablo making a ring out of a nut and wanted to have a challenge i suceeded and im still pleased with the result but in retrospect i should have just watch your videos. after just 1 hour watching your videos i already know so much more and there are so many new techniques that now dont look that scary anymore!!!! great videos u have there sir!!
Great Video Andrew but as a newcomer (VERY) I would like to see a video where you tell the world about the tools you use, where you buy the materials etc. It could include even the basic stuff like hammers, files, saws and blades, burrs etc. In this video you used a brush to clean the piece but what is it? Look forward to more
Hi Andrew! You requested some ideas for videos. Perhaps some techniques for making cuffs/bangle bracelets and what you can solder onto it prior to shaping and what can't such as settings. etc. This would be most helpful. Thanks for all your videos! You rock!
Loved the video, is it possible for you to go to next step and show how to set the stone? I live in Victoria Australia and enjoy your videos. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with the world. People like you Mr. Berry, make the world a better place! Stay well and keep going you have a fan for life!
Can’t say enough how much I love 💗 💕this video!! This is now one of my favorites!! Everyone in my Metal smithing class knows I’m big on learning new ways to make claw & basket settings. I’ve been following your teachings for a couple of yrs. now & have learned more from you than from my teacher. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great teacher. What you do, brings to life, techniques we may already know but see through new lenses!! Keep them coming & Thanks for your contribution to motivating new & experienced Metal Smith wannabes!👍🏻
I tried it some times earlier and Im mad about how I just cant cut straight and even claws and gaps from the greater silver piece. I think now I have the info I needed to to it right. Thank you for sharing!
Love your videos. I am learning so much and correcting the wrong previous methods learned. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Maybe you already covered but just in case: there is a way to also make a prong setting from a flat sheet to avoid also the soldering of prongs? (I still learning) can you make a video about it? I suppose the trick part in on the measurements and I think could be a way to add designs and be more creative. 😊
I am a 71 year old new to this hobby lady. I have a "My Little Torch" that i have hooked up to the 14 ounce disposable oxygen and propane canisters. The tanks also have the adapters that allow the hoses to connect. I am having trouble getting the torch to work . I cannot hear gas escape nor does a flame ignite when put to a flame. Can you go through a step by step process of setting up my torch? I have been enjoying your program and it has inspired many future projects. Thank you. Christine
Theres a channel called "GomeowCreations" the guys names Randy, an he has a video for setting up your Smiths little torch, he did a couple weeks back.! Tell him I sent ya over to him 😉 an I hope that helps out. An best of luck with things, I love hearing stories like yours, no one is ever too old to try new things so good on ya 😉
Thank you, Andrew, for another SUPER video If you have time a bangle video would be great :) how to figure the metal for the correct size is always a challenge for me Stay Well - Cheers!
I've heard a rule that 3 "teeth" always have to touch the metal. That's how you figure out what size blade you need. For example I use 3/0 or 4/0 for almost everything
:) Merci
Thank you so much Andrew, your videos are always super instructional, such a clear and great style you put in them! So much more precious in this lockdown time that makes it difficult at times to be constuctive. Best wishes from Italy x
@@Atthebench Sorry, that was meant to be included in the previous correspondence. I hadn’t thought of making a claw setting in that manor and fashion. My wife loved the ring you showed it with. I wonder if you can recommend a vendor for it either here in the States or the UK. Perhaps a photo or two would help me find it on my own. Thank you. Wishing you and yours a very happy holiday.
If we are rolling our own wire in a mill, no draw plates, and we square up the wire by rolling in the flat rollers, do we anneal before we start sawing the prongs or before we bend the prongs out? Thanks
That was awesome! 👍 I have some CZ Rounds and Ovals and I was feeling maybe a little overly ambitious but this definitely looks like something I will try in the near future (after a little more practice with my saw). Thanks for another great video! 👍😊
Muchas gracias por compartir la bendición del Padre del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo estén en tu vida y todos los tuyos gracias buen día bendiciones 😊😊😊😅😅
hi Andrew, can that be done with round wire please, I have seen it done on a very thick round wire but can it be done on a 2mm piece with a 1.5mm stone or will I be pushing luck, I have an idea in mind for a ring can you advise please as I know you are good, take care.
Love this video! In fact, I’m heading down to my shop to give this a try on some round 6 gauge fine silver that I’ve run through my rolling mill and is now perfectly square. I do have a question, one which you really didn’t cover much in the video and that’s ~ approximately how much material are you removing with the three sided file once you’ve finished sawing? It appeared you were pretty aggressive with that file and it looked like you removed quite a bit of material but you really didn’t elaborate on it. Can you help a girl out? Btw ~ I’ve watched all of your videos and all of them have most definitely helped me become a much better metalsmith! Thank you so much for sharing ~ Teri
Thank you so much for this one. I’m making a round setting, shaping it in a bezel block, marking and sawing. Needs some refining, but getting there. Now I’m going to try this method.
Ha found some 3.45mm cast and rolled scrap with a rounded edge. It will take half and hour to file an accurate square billet but hey suddenly there is time!
Great video. Can’t wait to see it set with a stone. I know you always mention the white nylon brushes but I can’t find them here. Do you have a link where we can get them? Thanks for all you do for us jewelry workers
Love this demo, Andrew! What a great technique for a round stone. Can this same method be adapted for oval shaped stones? If so, what modifications would need to be made regarding shape and size of the stock (i.e., Square vs. round, size - your demo used 3mm square wire), length of cuts for the prongs in relation to the size of the oval stone, for example an 8x10 mm oval? Would love to see this method demonstrated for oval stones.
Wow thank you that tutorial was brill. Am trying claw settings at the moment but anything smaller than 5 mm ish am struggling with. Love all the videos I always learn from them x.
How tall of a setting would you recommend cutting for a 6mm stone? Most stones I use for my rings are 6mm wide, but I don't want to make extremely tall settings for them, as they don't look great on smaller rings

Same here! Great request.
The same!!!. Thanks

I was going to ask the same question.
I’d love yo see how the garnet is set. : )
Thank you for the video.
Always learn a lot.

Love tour channel name!! Best wishes on your jewelry endeavor I too started for the same reason. Its rather therapeutic! 🌹
I am also disabled. I am starting gem faceting and jewelry making
what an unsusual setting! I suppose after one should cut out the seat? would love to see how to continue to set the stone. Thank you!!
I agree! I want to know how to set the stone.
@@judyjones3056 in case you didn’t find it, it’s in a separate video called ‘how to set a facetted stone in our no solder 4 prong setting’

I’ve wanted to make this for sooo long… thank you making it look easy ❤
Hi Andrew that was really useful, thank you, could you show us how then to set the stone in that setting please? :), thanks, Chris.
That brings back memories, I made things like that when I started on the bench back in the late 80s. Thanks for these videos. Keep well
Thank you for a simple et effective introduction to silver smithing.
I’m planning on making my gf a ring myself and propose with it and was super lost on how to make the setting this just helped a lot thank you so much

Another great video! Could you show how you do the actual setting? X
Stay safe!
YES!! This was my hope as well!
Yes please! Sas
if I could give more than one thumbs up I would. what a great lesson!
It's great to see that there are good silversmithing videos!
Thank you for all your wonderful videos. You explain things so well, my husband and I devour them.
very interesting and similar could be used on round settings, etc. Enjoyed
Very informative and well presented with detail and care. I want to echo the previous comment that I would like to see the gemstone set in this prong.

Ohhhhh! I know nothing about silversmithing, but that wire trick is super clever
Fantastic video, your teaching style is superb, can't wait for that thumb nail to grow out!!👍
I really like your channel. You’re very friendly and informative.
Thank you
Top class once again, thank you. How about a bit more on Delft clay and centrifugal casting? Do you ever do any enamelling?
Great video great info, so excited to give this a try, Thanks!
I would love to see the stone set and finished I love your work and learn more every time I see a vedio.
Thank you for being so thorough. You are a great teacher. I love watching how skilled you are.
Great information! Thank you Mr. Berry.

Nice simple little idea for a setting there Andrew 👌 spot on.. Loving this lockdown bcoz we gettin lots of Mr berry lately. Thank you Andrew
Thank you Andrew...superb informative commentary as always. I've got all the stones I wish to practice with.
This is a great instruction video. I'm going to give it a go!
Hey Andrew Come to Tucson during the gem shows!!!
Very nice, i like the protected setting really a lot, looks much better than just the claws on top of a ring band, nice aesthetic.
Thanks for the lesson Andrew. Loved it and it has inspired me to try it.👍
Thank you, Andrew, for another SUPER video If you have time a bangle video would be great :) how to figure the metal for the correct size is always a challenge for me Stay Well - Cheers!
I'll have to try this! Genius
Awesome. Now inspired to do things I never considered. Would like to see you set the stone.

Thank you 👍👌💟
I always enjoy learning new things from you. Thank you and keep up the excellent work.
Love this idea for a setting. Thanks for sharing. I'm off to try this out.
Would like to see how you would set a stone in that setting. Thank you

Nice ring setting , thanks Andrew!
👏 Thank you Andrew, that was brilliant!!! 👏🍹🌠
What a great idea thanks
Great video as always, but as with all the other people commenting, I was left wondering how to actually set the stone
I love that technique! TY so much! PS. I watched all of your live webcast the other day and loved it! TY!

Thank you Andrew, wow, simple but elegant, I will try this, just not sure when. Could you use 3mm round wire? The sawing down would be fun but?
More great content ... thanks Andrew
Very simple. Would a hole be drilled through the center or is the setting enough for light? Thanks!!!
It's really a brilliant idea.
hi Andrew, can that be done with round wire please, I have seen it done on a very thick round wire but can it be done on a 2mm piece with a 1.5mm stone or will I be pushing luck, I have an idea in mind for a ring can you advise please as I know you are good, take care.
Andrew, how did you come up with 4mm for the claws? I have some 5mm square wire, and a 10mm CZ. Can those be used together? TIA
another brilliant video. Can you use round wire? What size saw blade are you using?
Great video. Just what I needed. Could you show us how to set a stone in this claw??

Can you show us how you would set the stone into the setting also please as the garnet you showed looked too big for the setting
hey Andrew, thanks for the Video! What size of saw blade are you using for works like that? greetings from germany
Fantastic
Thank you Andrew now I have something to do today.
How tall of a setting would you recommend cutting for a 6mm stone? Most stones I use for my rings are 6mm wide, but I don't want to make extremely tall settings for them, as they don't look great on smaller rings
