You should go to TikTok, put a short video and link to this one. Your videos are just perfect. More people should see them. Every time I'm interested to a new product I watch your videos.
Yeah, I thought about that initially, but I don't like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram that much. Too much data got exposed, and they constantly have regulatory issues, so I am not too fond of the platforms anymore. Instead, I am looking for other more decentralised future-oriented platforms to share my content or links to my videos. 🙃 Anyway, thank you very much 🥰.
I have been on and off using the different retinoid products the ordinary and have noticed that the 5 percent in squalane has been the one that really has made the biggest difference in my skin without causing irritation. For a brief summary I have pretty normal skin but have kinda noticed that I am alot more dehydrated then I used to be (or at least i think I am) also I am a recovering addict and alcoholic with a year of sobriety so I am really trying to find the perfect skincare routine to help heal and restore my skin from some of the damage I have done from substance abuse and have noticed that both retinoids and vitamin have really helped improve my skin. One question I do have is in regards to the peptide formulas they have from the brand. I really wanna start using the buffet serum cuz I've used it in the past and really loved it but I know you said for the copper peptides version at least that I shouldn't be using it with the retinoids at all. Does that go only for the buffet with copper peptides or should I avoid both versions of the buffet in the same routine as retinoids. And if so is their and other peptide serums or just serums in general that would pair well with the retinoids in the same routine.
Hello :) This is because the copper peptides may accelerate skin cell turnover, as does retinol. Therefore they are recommended to use in different routines. However, technically the other peptides also work on your skin cells (if they can penetrate deep enough) but let's assume they will, then it is not recommended not to overwhelm the skin. Best to use one in the evening and the other in the morning. I have a guide for this, and you can find it here: How to use The Ordinary Buffet (Multi-Peptide + HA Serum) or Buffet + Copper Peptides 1% and Retinol ruclips.net/video/1-H4Hua0ZDs/видео.html
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet thank you so much from for responding and the advice. @@tlollirot1991 I think that is an excellent idea! I have an entire playlist, but I do need to rerecord some of them because sometimes the amount may not be enough. Hello thanks for useful video,I want to ask something. Can I use Neutrogena Clear and Defend Facial Wash(has salicylic acid) with The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% ?
I would argue that it may not be the best option as the formulation seems a bit drying. However, if your skin can tolerate it well, and depending on your overall skin type, it might work. Nevertheless, I would personally lean towards a more gentle formulation from brands such as The Ordinary, CeraVe, or Cetaphil.
@@gxhd1929 Yes, this is a retinoid formulation which helps to accelerate cell turnover on your skin. As a result, it not only accelerates the healing process of acne but also helps speed up the fading process of the spots associated with it.
Hello, I was wondering if it is correct to first apply retinoid serum 2% and right after a moisturizing cream. On the ordinary website it tells you should do like this. Is it ok?
No, since it is an exfoliating acid toner. I have a guide if you still want to use both. It mainly covers retinol, but you can follow it with that retinoid as well. See here: Can I use Glycolic Acid and Retinol Together ruclips.net/video/pGb_ZtCAk_s/видео.html
@@abdullahsaleem-fr6fn Retinol, an exfoliant, or Azelaic Acid could help reduce them; however, it also depends on the formulation of the products and what your skin responds best to! :)
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet the thing is i bought this retinol and it's kinda costly for me and I'm on tretinoin so i can't use this retinol on my face but i also don't wanna waste it so what should i do now ? Can i like mix it with moisturizer and then put it under my eyes to make it less potent or i should just avoid all ?
@@XoxoXoxi Well, this isn't retinol; it's Granactive Retinoid, which is a different form of Vitamin A. Tretinoin, (according to the information "they" provide), is the most potent form. But it's also different from retinol and Granactive Retinoid. Essentially, when you use tretinoin, there's no need to use retinol or Granactive Retinoid, as they all serve the same purpose. Furthermore, the 5% Granactive Retinoid may even be as potent as 0.05% of tretinoin (in case you have that one). However, it could potentially be less irritating. So, it really comes down to how well your skin tolerates these individual forms of Vitamin A. You could try diluting a small amount of the product with moisturizer and applying it under your eyes, but be sure not to get it too close to the eyes. Essentially, you'll have to test it out! I've provided a link below where you can read more about the different forms of Vitamin A to better understand them: Retinol: incidecoder.com/ingredients/retinol Tretinoin: incidecoder.com/ingredients/tretinoin Granactive Retinoid: incidecoder.com/ingredients/hydroxypinacolone-retinoate
Hi Melissa! I’ve seen a lot of conflicting advice as to whether you should use retinols/retinoids when on a summer beach holiday, what would you suggest? ❤️
Indeed, there seems to be a conflict regarding whether to use retinols/retinoids during a summer beach holiday. However, considering the potential for substantial sun exposure, I would advise discontinuing its use during this period. This caution is due to the fact that no sunscreen can guarantee 100% protection. Moreover, if you do not have a high-protection sunscreen, and are not diligently reapplying it every two hours or more, it could potentially affect your skin and cause irritation. In my opinion, avoiding these complications for such a short period seems well worth it. 😉
The daily facial cleanser is one of my favourite cleansers. The new formulation is even better and not as harsh on the skin (in my opinion)-no side effects. Of course, you can always get some irritation, but that can happen with any cleanser. You can only avoid it if you know the ingredient that is causing it.
What do you suggest using on the eyes since you are not applying Granactive on/around eyes? Is there an eye serum/mask you suggest which goes well with this routine?
There aren't many products that can be used on the eyes (eyelids), or close to the eyes. Generally, people tend to avoid it because it often just irritates them when sweating or generally during the day because of eye movement. Personally I like to use NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet gracias.

I just watched this after a year. I bought this online but I am a bit confused as to the color seems slightly green-ish, and it has a slight smell like herbs not strong but I can smell it. And it also peels even on bare skin. Is this normal?
What other products are you using in the same routine? But if it was never opened since you purchased it, it might still be effective. However, if you've opened it previously, then it's likely not.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Thank you for responding. You are referring to the peeling right? I had a sheet mask before using it now that I think about it. What about the color and smell? Thank you a million!
Make sure that the products you apply before applying the Retinol have fully absorbed into the skin; otherwise, it can cause pilling. Also, how much you use of the individual treatments matters a lot too! The color should be transparent, but over time, it gets a bit more yellowish. The one in the Emulsion is milky and has a yellow hue.
Hi so I have question. You said that this product is no good after 3 months of use. So I was wondering, in order to fully utilise the product, where else on the body can this be used which would be helpful?

Hey Melissa! 💕 Can you please recommend me something from the Ordinary for PIE and enlarged pores ? And secondly Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser is that a facewash ?or just a cleanser that removes makeup and stuff ??
Hey Syeda, Yes. A face wash is just a different word for cleanser. So yes, it removes dirt, oil and even light makeup. And the one I showed in the video is suitable for normal to oily skin. Technically you could use a retinoid/retinol and niacinamide and maybe a Salicylic Acid cleanser. @@jalebi7088 Yes, it's fine to skip your moisturiser. I have never used a Dermaroller myself, so I'm not sure how you would use it or what you can use it. Still, I probably wouldn't use Retinol or Granactive Retinoid after it. It may lead to irritation as it absorbs too fast into the skin.
Hi, I’m sorry if I’m bothering you but I wanted to ask something that is quite bothering me right now and I’m extremely concerned. A few months ago I saw a skincare routine for women over 50 here on RUclips and I’ve showed it to my mother who decided to buy it. Along the many products, she started to use this one but now that I’m getting into it I’ve seen many articles and videos saying that you should start with something like 0.25 or 0,5 retinol. Is it dangerous that my mother started with retinoids 5%? She didn’t get any irritation but I’m still worried…
Ah, yes, retinol and granactive retinoid are not the same. While both are forms of vitamin A, they function differently on the skin, even though they offer similar benefits. If you're considering retinol, I'd recommend starting with a low strength. I've been an advocate for these lower strengths for years, having observed comparable results with them as with higher strengths. If you (or your mom) decide to stick with granactive retinoid, I'd suggest starting with the lowest strength, which is 2%, especially if you're looking at products from The Ordinary. As for retinol, a good starting point would be 0.2%. I'm particularly fond of Good Molecules' 0.1% retinol cream; it's my go-to product.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet thank you very much. We pretty much both stopped using it and we’ll consider later one what to do. Thank you again for answering my question!
If you have active acne and you are dealing with post-acne marks, have a look at a Salicylic Cleanser or Leave-On Exfoliant/Serum and a Niacinamide Serum. You can probably tolerate The Ordinary 2% Granactive Retinoid in Emulsion or Squalane. However, this is not an acne treatment. It's an anti-ageing serum and it can help to improve discolouration.

Nobody really knows how it is calculated and performs since there are not many studies available. You can read info about it here: Granactive Retinoid: incidecoder.com/ingredients/hydroxypinacolone-retinoate Retinol: incidecoder.com/ingredients/retinol Also, it works differently than the retinol, so, therefore, you need to start all over again. And no, I recommend using retinol over this formulation since I think it has caused me some sleeping problems(ruclips.net/video/2lCIPMZ_UQA/видео.html), but I am not entirely sure, and I have also used it on my body, so I am not too fond of it anymore.
Hello Thomas 🙃, Granactive Retinoid is not Retinol. And hard to tell since there are no studies for this. You can however read more about it here: Granactive Retinoid: incidecoder.com/ingredients/hydroxypinacolone-retinoate Retinol: incidecoder.com/ingredients/retinol

Overall the products that you have chosen look good. You may just want to add a hydrating toner (like I'm From Rice) or essence (Beauty of Joseon) to your routine to add hydration and give you more glow. Use it before or after the exfoliant. Also, don't forget to adjust the frequency of Lactic Acid. Start with once per day, 2-3 times per week and slowly increase the frequency as tolerated. You are okay to use these three products in the same routine. It is mainly an issue with Buffet+Copper Peptides since it has some similarities. Anyway, you already have the correct order :)

Hello Amanda 😀 Since your skin needs to convert the retinol, you cannot compare it with the Granactive Retinoid. But I have never done this, so I am not sure. But based on how they work, I would start with a lower strength! And I am curious why do you want to change? Are you not happy with the results 🤔

Suppose you haven't bought it from an official retailer, then there is no way to tell if it is real or fake. No, retinol does not give you a "sensation" when applied to the skin.(It happens a few days after) And it has a greasy feeling because of the Squalane oil. And you shouldn't use it too close to the eyes, as explained and shown in the video. And yes, it smells a bit "weird". Not sure what it is.

Will you be able to test "L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Laser X3 Pure Retinol 0,2%" in the future? It's very popular, cheap and has lots of great reviews. Right now I'm using 2,5%-5% retinols, but they don't do anything after months! Maybe after 5 years? :D It seems there are many different kinds of strengths and it's super confusing. I need a low percentage one that makes the skin peel. Like a prescription tretinoin(this actually works). I heard Revitalift Laser can do this too.
This formulation is very potent, and you will see some results when using it. It's called HPR. So it is NOT retinol. You can read more about it here: incidecoder.com/ingredients/hydroxypinacolone-retinoate But I agree many retinol formulations are "scam" or, let's say; they have only a tiny amount of the active ingredient. I think it's mainly used for marketing purposes. But you can't compare them with this retinoid serums from The Ordinary. The Ordinary is very accurate, as I figured out over time. So if you use a formulation from them, you will see results. The drawback is just the oily formulation which does not feel that good on the skin, but it is very affordable, if you want to have an over the counter retinol/retinoid that shows faster results and has a better formulation go with Paula's Choice Retinol or Geek and Gorgeous Retinal. I haven't tested the L'Oréal Paris Revitalift Laser X3 Pure Retinol 0,2%, but I may do that. But as the name already says, it contains 0,2% of pure retinol. So it will give you benefits unless you have very bad luck and your skin isn't doing the conversion correctly, so you may need to use a higher % or, as you said, tretinoin or the Ganactive Retinoid from The Ordinary.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Thanks, for all the info! But not convinced "Granactive" retinol is better. A few drops of product every week seems like a bad business model. Lets create "granactive" so you can slather it on from morning till night. This way the bottle is empty fast. A much better business model. ;) My 2,5% retinol(hydroskin) also says 7 drops in the morning and evening. It's even in a 60ml bottle. Irritation Free! Seems like marketing for sure. It has some oils ofcourse. Which makes your skin glow a little. And this ofcourse makes some fools believe it works! I tracked my skin more accurately. No difference. Maybe on a 80 year old sunbather it does something. If your skin is already above average, you'll need much stronger stuff it seems to improve it.
@@markveen1373 I think that this was not the idea behind Granactive Retinoid. Maybe the idea was to create a tretinoin competitor that is still available over the counter and avoid regulatory issues. Keep in mind that 2% is low strength to show benefits. So formulations with 5% or even much higher can be used and tolerated but potentially without the irritation. From my experience, the 5% is pretty strong, but not sure how it compares to tretinoin or retinol directly because I haven't done a "split" face study on this one. So we will see how it turns out over the years, but I like the idea, and it definitely works since whenever I use it, I experience the common side effects. And if it binds immediately to the skin cells, it will be very similar to tretinoin/retinoic acid. Also, the retinol formulations that claim to have 2,5% retinol or even 5% often only have a small amount of pure retinol in them. Which then needs to be converted by the skin, and if the skin is not converting it properly into retinoic acid, you will not see any benefits, and therefore this is different. You will see benefits when using them, but they are not magical. But if you do use it constantly for at least 3 to 6 months, it will improve your current skin condition. Of course, you also need to protect the skin with sunscreen, hydrate it well etc. If you only use this or a retinol formulation and do not change other habits, it won't make much of a difference or even worsen your skin condition over time.

To see how your skin is responding to it.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet thank you for responding My skin is very oily, I have skin texture, uneven skin tone and acne breakouts all the time. I’ll do what you recommend and see what happens Thank you so much, you’re videos are simple but explain everything perfectly!
hi Melissa thank you for another helpful video! I know that you're not supposed to use it with the bha&aha mask from the ordinary but can i alternate btwn using the two? what would you recommend doing if you had to use both in the same period of time? Since summer is coming up i can't really give up the option of using aha and bha. And i have to use up both the product as well before it goes bad....🥲
I’m actually quite good at using up my Granactive Retinoids in time. Also, I think the three month time limit goes for the oils (I use sea buckthorn oil, grape seed oil and rosehip oil - the sea buckthorn oil is from The Ordinary too the other two oils are from different brands) and the resveratrol + ferulic acid as well. The oils, I sometimes mix with body lotion/body creams; the resveratrol+ferulic acid goes perfectly with Johnson&Johnson grape body lotion, that has a high percentage of grape seed oil! 🍇🍇🍇 I’m using retinol (granactive retinoids as well as retinyl palmitate, that’s a little milder) on different parts of my body with very good results. I recommend! 👍 👍 My favourite of The Ordinary’s retinols are the Granactive Retinoid 2% emulsion. I also alternate it with retinaldehyde products and I with The Inkey List Bakuchiol moisturiser, which I also recommend. Though retinaldehyde is a bit stronger, so that something I do after have been using Granactive Retinoid 2% for years, so I know my limits. But The Ordinary have great retinols and I’m sure there’s one retinol for everyone somewhere in the wide range of retinol serums that they have. I just bought the La Roche Posay Cicaplast for lips and their Cicaplast B5 balm. These two are great for winter dry skin. I also bought myself the Weleda SkinFood (a green tube) and it’s a true joy to use as well. ✨😻✨ Thank you for great videos! 🙏 🌸🌸
Hey! :) Yes, the Ordinary products, in general, are pretty versatile as you can use them on your own or do your own DIY, which is excellent! I have been using the serums and exfoliating acids on my face and body, and it works great! :) Since you are using different brands and forms of Retinols, which one do you prefer the most? Oh great! Have you tried the La Roche Posay products already? Do you like them? I used to use Weleda Skin Food moisturisers two years ago. They are great! I even have made videos about them! :) Thank you! :)
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet I’ve missed the Weleda SkinFood video 😮 I’ll check it out asap. Yes, the La Roche Posay Cicaplast are really nice. The lip balm is one of the absolutely best lip balms I’ve tried. The B5 balm is amazing for taking care of dry skin patches, irritated skin etc. I’ve used it together with another cream (Laneige Cica sleeping mask) as sleeping mask, last night even. I’m working on getting rid of a little redness as well as preventing transepidermal water loss. I don’t know what retinol I prefer the most. They’re all good. I love the formulation of The Inkey List Retinol serum. It’s very nice on the skin, not as oily as The Ordinary’s retinols. But I love the Granactive Retinoids from The Ordinary too 🤷🏻♀️ It have helped me so much. I’ve also got Sunday Riley A+ serum and that’s a high percentage (6 point something percent) and a really nice formulation too. But, let’s be honest, that one is hella expensive. Talking about Sunday Riley, I’ve also got their retinol oil, Luna. It’s sure nice and perfect when you want to treat your skin with oils. It prevents dryness too. And then I have the Geek&Gorgeous A Game and that’s retinal. It’s great. I’ve not experienced any dryness with it, but I’ve been using retinols for years so I don’t know if it’s for everyone. But I think you might like it since you have used retinols for years as well. Then I’ve tried the Medik8 retinal which is super but it’s way too expensive, and honestly it feels like Geek&Gorgeous is doing the exact same thing, only they do it at a drugstore price point, so with my economy I’m going for the Geek&Gorgeous. But if I had the money, I’d probably use Medik8 too. I don’t know 🤷🏻♀️ As I said, they’re all good and that’s why I alternate. The Inkey List is the only one that has dried me out, when I first started using retinols, and that was on my neck. But a nice Snow mushroom serum (Revolution Skincare has a really good one, which is my favourite) helped soothing and repairing - pretty much over night. Thank you for your answer. It’s always nice talking to you 🌸🙏🌸

Anyway, thank you very much 🥰.
Hello :)
This is because the copper peptides may accelerate skin cell turnover, as does retinol. Therefore they are recommended to use in different routines. However, technically the other peptides also work on your skin cells (if they can penetrate deep enough) but let's assume they will, then it is not recommended not to overwhelm the skin. Best to use one in the evening and the other in the morning.
I have a guide for this, and you can find it here:

Hello thanks for useful video,I want to ask something. Can I use Neutrogena Clear and Defend Facial Wash(has salicylic acid) with The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% ?
I would argue that it may not be the best option as the formulation seems a bit drying. However, if your skin can tolerate it well, and depending on your overall skin type, it might work. Nevertheless, I would personally lean towards a more gentle formulation from brands such as The Ordinary, CeraVe, or Cetaphil.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Oh thank you so much and i also want to ask that is The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% is good for acne and acne spots?
@@gxhd1929 Yes, this is a retinoid formulation which helps to accelerate cell turnover on your skin. As a result, it not only accelerates the healing process of acne but also helps speed up the fading process of the spots associated with it.

I've provided a link below where you can read more about the different forms of Vitamin A to better understand them:

Tretinoin: incidecoder.com/ingredients/tretinoin
Granactive Retinoid: incidecoder.com/ingredients/hydroxypinacolone-retinoate
Is cetaphil new improved cleanser really good? Are there any side effects?
The daily facial cleanser is one of my favourite cleansers. The new formulation is even better and not as harsh on the skin (in my opinion)-no side effects. Of course, you can always get some irritation, but that can happen with any cleanser. You can only avoid it if you know the ingredient that is causing it.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet cetaphil new improved cleanser does not contain any harmful ingredients for the skin, right?

Can I just answer this question? This is my last question.

Can I use granactive retinoid if I have sensitive acne skin?
If you have active acne and you are dealing with post-acne marks, have a look at a Salicylic Cleanser or Leave-On Exfoliant/Serum and a Niacinamide Serum.
You can probably tolerate The Ordinary 2% Granactive Retinoid in Emulsion or Squalane. However, this is not an acne treatment. It's an anti-ageing serum and it can help to improve discolouration.

ruclips.net/video/l_C7HtO826A/видео.html
Yeah exactly like this , I thought there is something wrong with the ingredients in the cleaner that is why i am experiencing this issue
Also as i have dry and a bit uneven skin can you suggest me an Am and Pm regimen i have these products from The ordinary:
Hyaluronic acid
Alpha arbutin + Ha
Plants derived hemi squalane
Natural moisturizing factos (moisturizer)
And i am using Simple's moisturizing facial wash
You have already listed them in the right order of application :) Just use your cleanser at first before using anything else.
i just bought the .5% in squalene but i cant tell if its real or fake. seems real, should it sting? should it have any sensation on my skin when applied? all i know is its greasy and it stung when i got it in my eye. smells kind of sour
2%Vitamin c and 1%hayluranic acid serum
l anti aging night cream With rational
Damage recovery night cream with Kojic acid
Skin tightening face gel with hydrolyzed collagen.
How can I use this product in my skin care routine pls suggeste.and should I use salicylic acid base face wash or anything else. Cuz I have oily acne prone skin n dull. So u can tell me what kind of face Wash is best .
You can use a face wash with Salicylic Acid. My advice would be The Inkey List Salicylic Acid cleanser. And as your gentle cleanser, you could use Cetaphil New Daily Facial cleanser (which I used in the video)
A routine could look like this:
AM:
The Inkey List Salicylic Acid cleanser
2% Vitamin c and 1%Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Skin tightening face gel with hydrolysed collagen.
SPF (If exposed to the sun)
PM1 (2-3 times a week):
Cetaphil New Daily Facial Cleanser
Damage recovery night cream with Kojic acid
PM2 (Rest of the week):
Cetaphil New Daily Facial Cleanser
Anti-Ageing night cream with retinol
After watching couple of your super informative videos, I have subscribed to your channel. I have a very basic AM routine: CeraVe gentle cleanser, CeraVe moisturizer and sunscreen; and PM routine double cleansing, Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane and CeraVe moisturizer. I want to incorporate Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 in my AM and PM routine. What is the right order to layer it?
Hey! :)
Thank you so much for subscribing and welcome to the skincare world haha🙈
You can use Hyaluronic Acid immediately after cleansing in the AM and PM, daily.
You can read more about it here: incidecoder.com/ingredients/hydroxypinacolone-retinoate
But I agree many retinol formulations are "scam" or, let's say; they have only a tiny amount of the active ingredient.
A much better business model. ;)
My 2,5% retinol(hydroskin) also says 7 drops in the morning and evening.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Again, very interesting perspectives. Keep up the good work and have fun! :)

Use one exfoliant and one oil at a time (per routine). You will have one AM and one PM routine. Or one AM routine but 2 PM routines.

@@Katabun Overall, your AM and PM routine looks excellent, and this can work! However, what's your skin type and what are your skin concerns? In the beginning, alternate between Salicylic Acid and Lactic Acid. So, use Salicylic Acid on Monday, Lactic Acid on Tuesday etc... both are quite gentle. However, if sensitivity occurs, use it less often. Also, you may just want to use Niacinamide and Hyaluronic Acid once per day in the beginning before using it twice per day. To see how your skin is responding to it.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet thank you for responding
My skin is very oily, I have skin texture, uneven skin tone and acne breakouts all the time.
I’ll do what you recommend and see what happens
Thank you so much, you’re videos are simple but explain everything perfectly!
hi Melissa thank you for another helpful video!
Yes, that's fine! :)
My favourite of The Ordinary’s retinols are the Granactive Retinoid 2% emulsion.
Thank you for great videos! 🙏 🌸🌸
Hey! :)
Yes, the Ordinary products, in general, are pretty versatile as you can use them on your own or do your own DIY, which is excellent! I have been using the serums and exfoliating acids on my face and body, and it works great! :)
Since you are using different brands and forms of Retinols, which one do you prefer the most?
Oh great! Have you tried the La Roche Posay products already? Do you like them?
I used to use Weleda Skin Food moisturisers two years ago. They are great! I even have made videos about them! :)
Thank you!
It’s always nice talking to you 🌸🙏🌸
@@rosemary5005 Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the different products! I haven't tried Sunday Riley products. I may look into them in the future! :)🥰
