I read a comment a few years back, it said….'The SAS were originally borderline psychotics' That was said by one of the originals. I would add, everyone of them was a class act.
If Britain got a thriving and prosperous film industries like hollywood in the US, there would be thousands 'based on a true story' films produced about the SAS, Commando, SBS and many extraodinary characters during the WW2.
All gone now. 8:15 Actually, they are not wings. but flames. The SAS parachute wings are taken form the wallpaper on the Shepherd Hotel in Cairo. The same hotel where Orde Wingate attempted suicide in 1941.
Not from the absolute original cadre, but certainly one of the originals. He joined shortly after the original cadre was put together. I knew him in Calgary. He had a permanent trach fitted, which profoundly affectd his ability to speak. I once sat next to him at an Officers' Mess dinner. An elderly gentleman across from him leaned over with a short note and handed it to Roy. Without blinking, Roy took out his pen and scribbled a response and handed it back. I was shown the note later. The other fellow had written, "Roy, you are surrounded by Freemasons." It was a friendly dig at Roy who was a devout Catholic and a senior member of the Knights of Columbus. Roy had responded with, "That's nothing. I've been surrounded by Germans," referring to one of his close shaves in Crete. He wa a great man and highly resepcted.
Not an original original, was on Crete with a tank regiment while the originals were running wild in the desert. First op Roy farran participated in was Italy, believe it was operation speedwell
Inspiring group of soldiers, just finished Jim Almonds bio, by his daughter, excellent.
What an amazing group of men.
They would be appalled of the world today
That generation fought for and won our freedom but successive generations have thrown it away and its been lost. So sad and tragic.

The phrase "who dares wins" loses a little meaning when you follow it up with "Rodney" or "Trigger".
Anybody know Roy Farran as an original
