    I encourage every American to watch this series. I absolutely loved it. It has been my favorite since Band of Brothers. Totally difference but a brilliant series. Cannot wait for season 2 to come to the states. Also check out Masters of the Air.

    A few notes for the uneducated. Firstly, The Officer who rudely addressed Mayne in the Officers Mess was in wrong as he disparagingly called him a “Paddy” most insulting indeed and also went to grab him by the shirt. Mayne being himself acted in a defensive manner. The MPs made the same mistake by calling him an Irish F-k, not nice at all. Now, although he was in fact called Paddy by his colleagues, which is not uncommon for we Irish to be identified as Paddy regardless of our correct given name. His real name was Robert Blair Mayne. He was never called and would never be called Paddy in County Down or anywhere else in His home town, Ulster or Northern Ireland. Robert was Protestant and no Protestant would ever have the given name of Patrick, anymore than a Catholic would be given the name William or Billy, in Northern Ireland. To reiterate, he wore the tag Paddy proudly in the SAS, However, as a Solicitor he would be known as Robert, Bob or Bobby. Yes, his Museum in Ballyclare identifies him as Paddy Mayne. Interestingly not in his home town or even Ballymena home base of the Royal Ulster Rifles in which he served (my home town) prior to the Paras and the SAS. A very brave and courageous Soldier and proud Ulster man. Another little tidbit for you. The VC was Awarded to more Irish Servicemen (North and Republic) than any other Personnel serving in the British Army. Considering, they are all volunteers. Trust you appreciate the info. God bless all; British, American, Canadian, Israeli and NZ, Personnel and a special thank to the past and present Australian Military Personnel, who have been part of my life for the past 60 Years.

      well he did call out Lt Mayne several times and by this time he was ticked off that a Jr officer was ignoring him. It was Mayne who provoked him.

    Jack O'Connell is a fine actor, however, Lieutenant Colonel Mayne was 6'3'' and a physically imposing man, an Irish Universities Heavyweight Boxing Champion and Rugby international (Ireland and the British Lions). Surely they could have cast someone a bit bigger than wee Jack? (5'7'')

    • @QuasiMonkey
      @QuasiMonkey 6 дней назад

      It would drastically reduce the pool of actors they could choose from if they had to find people of similar heights & builds to real life counterparts, most actors (& people) aren't of the tall variety as the majority skew towards the shorter end of the spectrum (only 1% of the worlds pop is 6'6"+ for example)
      Imo height shouldn't be too big of a deal, as it's better to find a fantastic actor such as Mr. O'Connell is imo, who can portray & embody the person in a broad sense, rather than get lost in the little specific details. And hope the audience can allow the sacrifice of certain details for the sake of overall enjoyment & portrayal.

      Off the top of my head, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Eoin Macken (even looks like the man himself), James Norton, Clive Standen, all decent British or Irish actors 6 feet and over, and there are plenty more. I’m not taking anything away from O’Connell’s acting skills, (I think he’s great in ’71, Starred up etc.) but there is a big difference between 5’7’’ and 6’3’’.

    • @QuasiMonkey
      @QuasiMonkey 6 дней назад

      @@bad_dog4648 But how many of those actors were available at the time for filming & didn't have other commitments? Easier to list some names of actors that are taller but much more complicated when it comes to the actual production of a series.
      I guess I'm just trying to say an actors height in relation to portraying their real life counterpart isn't or shouldn't really be that important when compared to the bigger picture of producing and our enjoying a series. Especially when they take a lot of creative license with practically everything else & should be viewed as a broad representation of true events.
      Anyway, have a pleasant day or night and I hope you also enjoy season 2 when it comes out as they recently released the trailer and I know I'm looking forward to it!

      @@bad_dog4648 Jack O'Connell's accent was woeful. Liam Neeson in his younger day would have been perfect for the roll. Jamie Dornan would be good, he was born and raise about 4 miles from where Blair Mayne was born and raised.

    Paddy is correct when he states that having a real lover makes you think of them when fighting rather than doing the job without a shit about anyone or anything. So, screw every one of them with a smile and enjoy like it’s your last, then fight like you want more tomorrow. No commitments to anyone but yourself, NO ONE! By Order of the SAS.

    Amazing is an understatement. We need more like him right now in this world. The only problem is the woke big brass. As you can see by example how Paddy himself was treated by the big brass Should have received a 2nd VC for his outstanding bravery and courage in battle. We know why of course. What give this disobedient upstart Ulster Paddy another VC, No way he doesn’t set an example befitting such recognition. The big man didn’t do it for the Medals and certainly couldn’t have cared less about what the Elite big brass thought of him. He cared only of his fellow SAS Soldiers. Service personnel in the Australian SAS and Commando having served in the Middle East only to be treated in a disgraceful manner by print TV Media such as the ABC doctoring evidence used in a court of law. Hopefully, we haven’t heard this last of this nonsense and allow it to be swept under the carpet. These Soldiers deserve nothing less than a Royal Commission into such wrong doings and the persons responsible charged and jailed accordingly. Financial compensation is befitting to these Soldiers and their Families. Proud to call every single one of them a mate.

      He had plenty of problems with the brass back in his time. So do you really think 1940's army officers were 'woke'? Or is it more likely Mayne was a very unconventional person who probably wouldn’t fit easily into any line unit, regardless of time, place and ideology?

    • @QueerChica
      @QueerChica 11 дней назад

      You know he fought against fascism, right? Bearing that in mind, "woke" is another buzzword because you don't want to accept that freedom of speech isn't freedom from consequence. Sounds like you're another cis het, white man blaming others for your shortcomings and intolerance.
