Wow!! This video is and the presentation is absolutely fantastic. What a truly inspiring insight to the Legend that is Lt Col. Blair Mayne. Thank you so much for posting this on RUclips.
What a Brilliant and Fascinating lecture - thank you Peter and thank you Blair 'Paddy' Mayne the man who most deserved our highest decoration for Valour and did not get it, sadly. Your spirit lives on.
Peter, that was excellent. I read the Phantom Major when I was about 14, 60 years ago, and have been fascinated by the story of the SAS - past and present - ever since. As a Commando trained RNR medical officer, a SAS sargeant major tried to recruit me but alas career pressures wouldn't allow it. Bravo Zulu. Don
Thanks you for this presentation of a man who was loved by like minded people. I’m in Australia and will try to make it to Britain again, and will make an effort to pay my respects.
@@cordellkent4790 I would be very surprised if any didn't! I was just making sure you knew that, unlike the term Antipodea which includes both Australia and NZ, Britain doesn't include Ireland. That's why the official name of this country is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. - because northern Ireland isn't in Britain. It's in Ireland.
Thank you for this, I’m definitely coming over to visit this hero’s hometown and pay my respects. Liverpool to. Belfast looks easily doable to get to the Town
I hope you mean by plane into Belfast City Airport. The Liverpool-Belfast ferry has a journey time of 8 hours plus the 2 hour wait before boarding! It's not that far, but takes forever. 😂
@@jmccullough662 The plan is definitely flying but I’m not bothered by a bit of sailing, it’s a good chance to read. Really looking forward to getting over and ofcourse a pint of proper Guinness
Such a great presentation. He may have died at 40 years of age but he lived 5 lifetimes in such a short time. I think to the people that say he was a psychopath I think he probably just didn't like Germans and what they did .. so did what he needed to do.. he was one of the true British war heroes like Nelson, Wellington etc.
Great presentation! A few inaccuracies on Jock Lewes and his rowing but hey! I loved the rogue heroes series despite the Mis portrayal of Blair. He was a watchable character but it would have been interesting if they had tried to portray him properly. Interestingly, and bizarrely, Tony Scott who drove the jeep at Oldenburg for Blair used to be my neighbour in the early 1980’s!
Was enjoying this up until the part that because Blair was friends with a brave serving British officer, who happened to be a Roman Catholic , he wasn’t a loyalist ….. we really need to move beyond this ‘guilty prod syndrome’…
@FrankieCorr-m2m His family pronounced his name as 'Ian". I am friendly with his nephew, Ambrose's son, also called Eoin... who also pronounces it as "Ian".
Blair paddy Mayne was never given the recognition he deserved as a military officer and a soldier. Like many Irish men who Inlisted in the first ww and then the 2nd ww who dawned the British uniform , but the Irish back then were always down the picking order win it came to v, c medal. Blair Paddy Mayne had courage and fighting spirit but never good enough for the v,c ,,,,, always the same.
This is a man that should have been awarded the victoria cross

All I can say, he is was a legend.
What a Brilliant and Fascinating lecture - thank you Peter and thank you Blair 'Paddy' Mayne the man who most deserved our highest decoration for Valour and did not get it, sadly. Your spirit lives on.
Absolutely splendid presentation. Very well done. Thank you. The BBC series are a shameful travesty to the memory and history of RB Mayne.
Excellent presentation.
Fascinating historical account. Thanks.

Just so you know, the man was from Ireland, not Britain.

And I an an Antipodean. I think if I shake the family tree, some Irish may fall out.

Engages the audience, keeps good pace and the subject at hand is of course the legendary Robert Blair Mayne. Fantastic
Thank you wonderful program
Very well researched documentary
Thank you 👍
Absolute legend 🇬🇧🏴🌹💯🦁🦁🦁
I always refer to Blair ‘Paddy’ Mayne VC

A handsome, intelligent man and unequalled warrior.
Why hasn’t the Chief of the Defence Staff put his feet in the IN tray of the Defence Sec. Our Generals need to be on this.
Peter would disregard and gafaw on named as a local historian,
your doing a good job not being one!
Fantastic watch indeed on our local hero
Why does col Tim collins say in SAS the originals documentary that Stirling says L stands for Learner as a joke to HQ.

Hylands House, the HQ of the Regiment, is in Chelmsford, rather than Cheltenham.
He said Chelmsford
He said Cheltenham.
If you listen again, I did say "Chelmsford", and always do.
Like Darvel in Scotland, the SAS were also billeted at Hylands House for a spell, and yes, as I said, it is in Chelmsford.
👍👍✌
Really like interview, but why no mention that was in the masonic lodge?.
Each talk is slightly different each time. I often mention his and his family's Masonic connection, but I was limited by time here, apologies.

Eoin,is pronounced Owen not ian
Not by the McGonigal family, they pronounced his name as "Ian".
Irish is Own. Owen is Welsh.

Really enjoyed that presentation, top marks 👏 👌 I've read most of damiens' books, he's an incredible author ......
Because he was born in Ireland and his disapline record he didnt get the VC
Oh, Paddy must be too much of an Irish name so blair will do.
