    *"You never would, you coward!"*
    You know, the Master said that the Time Lords brought him back because he'd be "the perfect warrior for a Time War." and yet when he encountered the Dalek Emperor, he ran away and hid. Meanwhile The Doctor, the (self-proclaimed) coward, the man who never would, stayed and fought till the end.
    It says something interesting, that does.

      It certainly says something about the Timelords. Keep in mind they're dealing with the same guy who was responsible for the murder of one of their presidents as part of a scheme that would likely kill most of them, simply in order to extend his life.
      What did they _think_ was going to happen 🤣 ?! Hardly screams "loyal warrior", does it? At least if they resurrected someone like Morbius he'd likely actually lead them (under the stipulation that they'd all bow to him, admittedly...)

    What I love about this scene is the fact The Master and The Doctor just found out they are, in fact, not the last of the Time Lords. Their race is alive, and well. They pulled a gun, and after everything, they put it, not on each other, but on the Time Lords. On their family. Their friends. These two who had been at each other's throats this entire time, chose to side with each other, rather than their family and friends. To protect each other. Jump in front of each other, keep the other from getting killed.

    I love these rare times when we are reminded that The Doctor and The Master were the closest of friends as children. This scene makes me tear up every time. The Doctor is ready to kill The Master to save the universe, but he doesn't want to kill him and he stalls until he figures out a way to save him. The Master dares The Doctor to kill him and is full of fear when he realizes that The Doctor will if there is no other way. The Master weakly shakes his head as a plea not to kill him because he wants to live. He's relieved that his old friend finds a way to spare him. Then The Master, despite his desire to live, sacrifices himself to save The Doctor when he see that The Doctor is willing to die at Rassilon's hand without even putting up a fight.

    • @alirezaomrani7650
      @alirezaomrani7650 Год назад +25

      You just described that so beautifully and truthfully.
      Yes, The Doctor and The Master will always be friends even if neither of them sometimes like admitting it… their bond as children of Gallifrey, as Twin Lords of Time, and as Movers of this vast and great Cosmos, will never be broken…
      The Bond between the Master and the Doctor has always been my favorite aspect of the show, because it shows just how alien and yet humanlike these 2 can be in relation to everyone else except each-other ❤️
      It’s just as Missy says: Their relationship is infinitely complex, it isn’t just a friendship, or a brotherhood, or a romance, or even rivalry. It’s more than that, it’s something mere humans like us will never be able to explain with proper words because they’re so far advanced from us, that we just can’t comprehend it. But even then, just a little bit, we get to see the spark of humanity inside these 2, and that sometimes helps us relate and even understand them sometimes, and it’s that feeling that helps us to enjoy watching The Doctor.
      The Doctor and The Master are many things:
      Enemies
      Rivals
      Friends
      Brothers
      Colleagues
      Classmates
      Scholars
      Travelers
      Comrades
      War Veterans
      Kindred Spirits
      Renegades
      But they’re will always be one thing the Doctor and the Master have always been to each other, and that is… Their 2nd half…
      The Doctor and The Master will always be each other’s missing piece, the Yin and Yang to each other, The One Who Cultivates… and The One who Dominates

    I honestly cannot describe how amazing the part when he recognises his mother is, the music is brilliant, David's acting is perfect, it's almost as if you can see him go back to being a kid again, he's no longer the Doctor, he's not the last of the time lords, he's just a little boy and his mother and that scene is so powerful because you can see how much it means to him to see his mother again. +Atharv, that'spretty noticeable. The other 4's that keep showing up are much less noticeable, like the ones that +Wintex and +Lord Dia Celium mention. Or how the Master bangs on the barrel 4 times, pauses, hits it 4 times again, etc.in this episode. There are other 4's that show up before this episode, too, though I'd have to open the TARDISpedia to hunt them all down and quote the specific episodes.
      It's very similar to the Bad Wolf thing that kept showing up everywhere for episode after episode in NewWho Series #1, until we finally discover where it's from, and then keeps showing up, even up to when Donna gets attacked in Turn Left, and when Billie Piper plays Bad Wolf as the conscience of the Moment. There are often things that are used as ties that go through an enire huge story arc that lasts sometimes years.
      That went on a lot in the old show, too. It lends a continuity to it, and helps as a "hook" to keep people waiting and watching for the next time it shows up, and they get the "ooh, wow, there it is again!" thrill.

    I've always thought that the doctor holding a gun was the saddest and most hopeless thing in doctor who. I mean, it'd pretty clear that after killing all the time lords in the time war, the doctor set out with the intention to help, to heal, to save. I'm pretty sure he made that decision before the time war because of the name he chose: Doctor. A practitioner in the medical sciences, a hope, a light for the hopeless. When he holds that gun up you know that's when the doctor has lost hope. A gun. A weapon, a murder weapon, an object that can cause nothing but death, and the doctor, after years and years of saying that he would save a whole species, a whole race, even at his own expense, held it with the intention to kill. idk, but that's always made me so sad. this part has always made me so sad. because what has happened to the doctor we love? what has happened to the doctor who used his two hearts to love instead of allowing them to blacken when things got bad? What happened to the doctor who knew that when shit got real, his morals and his values would matter most?

    • @ThePeaterBeater
      @ThePeaterBeater 8 лет назад +20

      Caitlin Chong here's a piece to think about. you hear the clicking after every turn he makes? the gun only ever had one bullet in it, in the fifth or sixth chamber. he pulled the trigger on every turn to move the bullet one slot closer to the barrel. he never intended on killing either rassilon or the master. he knew he could shoot the console behind the master to break the link, harmlessly dispelling of the timelords and allowing the master to live. it's also the reason that the close-ups of the trigger show it already pulled; he shot to rotate the chamber, knowing he'd not kill.

    • @KaneinEncanto
      @KaneinEncanto 8 лет назад +21

      KaneinEncanto and what of the master smirking when the doctor says, "get out of the way."? he must know the doctor's plan is to send rassilon back to gallifrey, else he wouldn't've fully trusted the doctor. but he smirks, then ducks out of the way. and he wouldn't've seen the woman's eyes scanning between the doctor and the machine.

    The look the Master has on his face at 3:20 is the perfect combination of rage, resignation, and genuine sacrifice. 1st, he is blisteringly angry as the time lord for implanting the knocks into his head and explodes with the music in the very next second. 2nd, he knows the doctor just sacrificed himself for him, his old childhood friend willing to sacrifice his life for someone who has been one of his worst enemies. And 3rd, The Master accepts his part and returns the favor, tying their arc in a perfect bow, from childhood friends to the worst of enemies, to sacrificing themselves for each other at the end of time. It is my favorite scene from Doctor Who because of the sheer amount of emotion it conveys in just a single second of time.

They had a moment between them where they came to an agreement that they were no longer each other's greatest threat, and I would have liked to see them talk about it afterwards, and maybe, well, not really become friends but come to an agreement. I believe that Missy was completely different from how the Master would have reacted the first time meeting the Doctor after The End of Time, and I'm not a fan of it.

      Yeah, it sucks that everyone forgets that Missy stops trying to kill the Doctor, but of course still tries to make him 'bad'. All in all, I think that Missy was a good Master, and though the episodes she appeared in were sub-par, I honestly think the End of Time was a horrible story as well and RTD pretty much lost his touch with the Specials, except for Water of Mars.

    I always loved how when The Doctor initially stands between Rassilon and The Master, it feels like he doesn't even care about the bigger picture or the consequences. That first pulling of the gun felt more like "I will not stand by and let my friend die."

  • @AnythingMachine
    @AnythingMachine 8 лет назад +22

    drawing a gun on Rassilon wielding his gauntlet is a bit like hefting a rock and aiming it at a man holding an assault rifle. That gauntlet is a general-purpose superweapon/tool and is literally millions of years beyond human technology. Rassilon could have ended that fight instantly

    • @willhyde5026
      @willhyde5026 3 года назад +5

      The gun the Doctor has will fire faster and the Doctor proved himself capable of anything in the time war, that's why Rassilon doesn't just use the gauntlet immediately. He knows the Doctor can shoot him, then empty the rest of the bullets in the gun into Rassilon to kill him during regeneration. The Doctor knows how to kill a Timelord - he very well could kill either Rassilon or the Master in this scene and they both know the Doctor could.

    For so many years, I had this theory that the woman was actually The Doctor Donna who had finally found a way to escape and went looking for gallifrey. She contacts Wilfred first and tells him at one point “I was lost once” which I thought she was referring to how lost she was trapped inside Donna for so many years. But because Russel T Davis never confirmed and reading up on theories. It’s left to audiences interpretation. But the woman being the Doctors mother makes more sense and when I rewatched it with that perception on her, it was more powerful and I kept crying.

    Two best friends who spent their many lifetimes battling across the stars. The doctor shows the master some compassion, against all odds he saved the day and didn't hurt the master, and was instead willing to die for it. The master, just can't help but to save him back, sure, he does it his way, reagefully, reckless, but it is done. I like to think Missy's eventual turn started here, seeing proof beyond proof, he still cared

    I don't think I've ever seen the Doctor so beat up, disheveled, and at the end of his rope, even after so many episodes watching him fend off aliens, cyborgs, ghosts, and even demi-Gods. Literally, this episode pushed him to the absolute limits of his abilities, yet he still managed to come out ahead- albeit at great sacrifice.
