My buddy John Avila (also from San Gabriel) joined the band in 84 and I went to every home show from the Greek Theater that year with the Dead Man's Party tour to the Farewell show at the Universal in 94. I was a young teenager when Boingo first came out and they were HUGE in the Alternative scene but I somehow never really gave them a chance - I think because they had such a goofy name which at the time there were many, like Devo and B-52's,;.Kajagoogoo, I was TOO COOL. I was a dope. It took until very recently to rediscover Boingo and now they're my new favorite old band.

"NO ONE LIVES FOREVER" is one of Oingo Boingo's best. Also, check out Danny's new Boingo-esque Solo stuff... theres a music video he did for a song called "Happy" which is freaky as hell. Also, you might wanna check out some live footage if him at Cochella this year... not only is he brilliant but hes the most jacked 60-something guy you've ever seen. Dude could pull your arms off.

Oingo Boingo is "dated but ahead of its time" because it's '80s new wave/ska interpreting pre-1940s Big Band music. Among Elfman's influences are Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington.

Actually the song refers to how people make excuses for kids who do bad things by saying "they are only a lad". Even though they are kids they need to be held responsible for their actions. Very relevant especially these days as some kids do really bad things and are protected because of their age.

Although the rerelease of "Only A Lad" on the album with the same title, the song originally released in 1980 on their 4 song EP. I still have it in my collection and it was the one song that started my love of the group. FYI, they were not considered New Wave at the time as that was exclusively British groups and the "wave" of music that came from across the ocean. Boingo was considered "Alternative Rock" with touches of Ska and Punk in the beginning then going to more of a pop sound in their later years. My good friend John joined the band in 84 and I went to every concert from the Greek Theater Dead Man's Party tour until the Farewell concert at the Universal Amphitheater in 94. A very underrated but amazing group of musicians.

Boingo was mostly limited to the southwest from Southern California to Utah.
They were "officially" New Wave but it doesn't capture their sound. They were New Wave Punk Ska Beach rock
Check out "Mary" from their last album. Completely different sound, more melancholy, but it is a great song

Absolutely love this song! Possibly my favorite Oingo Boingo song. Loved your reactions!! You boys are hilarious to watch 😆. I’d like to recommend a song with a similar topic (young man who’s parents are in denial as to his bad behavior) and also considered new wave. The song is No Thugs in Our House, by XTC. I believe it came out in 1982, and I remember a band actually playing it in the clubs and we danced to it (mostly jumping up and down - you’ll understand if you get to listen to it 😆).
You may need to pull up lyrics because the band is English. Thanks again for your reaction today. I always enjoy watching you!💗💕

Hi guys. I'm usually only here for the Al Stewart reactions, but I'm also a huge Oingo Boingo fan! They kind of remind me of the brilliant English band, XTC, but on steroids. The band was originally called The Knights Of Oingo Boingo, started by Steve Elfman (Danny's brother, and I believe father of Jenna Elfman from the TV show, Dhama and Greg). Danny writes the songs, but his guitarist, Steve Bartek (I'm sure if I've spelled that wrong, someone will correct me) arrange and wrote charts, not just for Oingo Boingo, but for the sound tracks Danny wrote too. This is not a good album... It is a fantastic album!! Two of my sister's say it is the perfect album to put on and do house work. We differ on this, I think is a great album to enjoy a few beers to.... O remember you guys doing Dead Man's Party, and let me tell you, there are a few more on this album you'd love (Nasty Habits for a start, but it is about masterbation... Lol), and there are a few more albums to glean from. No where as many as Al Stewart, but still lot to do. Thanks for brightening my day guys.

This is my favorite band if all time. (Real fans just call them Boingo). I am not ashamed to say that I've seen them live 22 times.
As good as they are in the studio, they are even better live. Do yourselves a favor and watch their farewell tour performance. It will blow you away. I think it's on youtube.
Next up, give "Who Do You Want To Be" a listen. You won't be disappointed.
By the way, the reason it's not as well known as y'all think it should be is because far too many people are biased against New Wave. It's a different sound an they are afraid it.

Really quick, the song isn't about kids making mistakes and need to be given a break. It's about kids' behavior gets worse because they are not held accountable.

I’ve seen them at least six times and met the whole band one night at Tipitinas in New Orleans. Backstage was calm and professional, like a bunch of old men getting off of work. Danny Elfman is very approachable, real nice man.

@@notmyrealname1730 So much fun! Danny still has it, even at 69. He did a mixture of new stuff, his iconic scores, and a little OB. There were so many Gen X'ers like me with their kids. Good times.

This was a good choice. This was their first hit song, very popular in SoCal. I'm sure Fallout Boy would love the comparison. They got their name from a comic book on The Simpsons, right? and Elfman has his connection to the Simpsons. This was the first full album, before that this song was on an EP which was a shorter LP vinyl record with 4 songs total, 2 per side on the vinyl. Most of the lyrics on all of the songs were cynical about society and/or sarcastic. We're not meant to condone the bad behavior of the lad. And they're not condoning the lifestyle in Ain't This the Life either. And yes, the Oompah Loompahs were also singing about bad behavior, what do you get when your kid is a brat. I can see why it came to your mind. Especially in the acapella part "It's not his fault that he can't behave. Society made him go astray." That does sound like the Oompah Loompahs. Lol. And you're absolutely right, a lot of those 80s bands who tried to copy the sound couldn't quite catch his 🔥 fire.
I think that you would also like some DEVO, have you heard any of DEVO, I'm new to your channel. The leaders of DEVO, Mark Mothersbaugh also went on to score movies like Elfman but instead of Burton, he scored for Rugrats, PeeWee Herman, and Wes Anderson. Actually I think they both wrote scores for PeeWee Herman, one did the TV show, the other the movies. Great commentary guys, I will subscribe. Here's a link to one of my favorite Devo songs, other great ones are GirlUWant and Freedom of Choice. And Uncontrollable Urge, seen here.
