Three Lessons Learned During First-Time Gutter Installation to Harvest Rain Water 💦

- I learned three lessons in a hard way during gutter installation:
0:48 Your gutter must extend beyond the roof end, not align with it.
1:20 The lower piece of downspout must cover the top piece.
2:06 Apply thick coat of the sealer.

This type of video is just as important as the "this is the right way to install" videos. By showing what happens when an installation is done incorrectly, we all learn the "why?" of proper installation techniques. We also learn how to troubleshoot a problem installation for the typical diy errors.
Thanks for sharing!
👍
Professional installer here. This video made me smile…. Just a bit. It speaks volumes without saying a word. I’ve made everyone of these mistakes when first learning the trade. gutters to short , downspout elbows installed upside down, box miters installed inside the gutters when they are supposed to be installed on the outside. The list of mistakes are endless it seems. It would be funny, but these simple mistakes can cost property owners multiple thousands of dollars in damages.
😅
As a mechanic, this has to be one of my favorite videos ever. No one ever highlights their mistakes to this level in videos. There is a certain genius about this format.
Thank you so much for your comment. I just released another video to add: ruclips.net/video/-WlC31U6Wsc/видео.html
beat me to that! love sharing the mistakes, the actual mistakes... and then the "learned" way.
But what tops it all of is the lovely music in the background I can hear Mr Rodgers saying “Here’s what it looks like when we fuck up boys and girls and now let’s see what we did wrong and how to correct it lol! Awesome video we need more like this because we’ve all been there
Saved me time and rethinking! Also loved the jazz… I’ll be sure to hear it while installing my gutter!
😀
I love the music. It brings me back to my childhood watching Charlie Brown.
😀
Great help via humble confession. Thanks. Absolutely so, so helpful.
Glad it was helpful for you! 😀
I'm about to embark on this journey.
Thanks for the tips
👏
Thanks for sharing. Ive decided to do this after the first heavy rain this year on a new home. Im not one with a lot of tools but wanted to save money doing it myself. These are the type of mistakes that will save me time avoiding. Thanks!!
Of course. I was on the same boat as you. Hope this saves you from some troubles! 😀
I totally would have installed the lower inside the upper without watching this, thank you! 😊
Glad I could help!
Thank you for sharing. I knew I had to see different videos of my next gutter project, I'm glad i didn't missed this one.
Glad it was helpful!
Nicely done. Mistakes most beginners would probably make..
Very true!
This video is very heartfelt instructive, and actually kind of funny and entertaining.
I really enjoyed seeing your learning process and the kind of blue Monday background score.
Also, most videos on RUclips show people doing amazing things in a few minutes and it rather leaves out how many times things go wrong and you have to start over.
Thanks for your honesty and sharing what you’ve learned.
Thank you very much! 😀
Number 4. When you cut the gutter and slip it into the piece next to it slip the cut off gutter into the other gutter
👍
Lol great video! Of all the rennos and repairs I’ve done on my own, self taught, putting up eaves was the worst, most difficult and demoralizing of them all. Shingled my roof solo, redid the bathroom, drywall, painting, were all difficult, but putting up eaves is something I will probably have someone else do next time. 😁
😅
Great tips! had not thought of extending gutter beyond end of roof!!
Glad it was helpful!
You did good. Just a couple of modifications after install.
😀
lol thank you for the chuckle. Love it.
Glad you enjoyed it
WOW! Words and images of wisdom. Thank you so much. That music is so calming knowing those mistakes would have been my mistakes.
Glad it was helpful!
This was brilliant. Honest and calming. Helpful too. Thanks-I didn’t even think about extending the gutter beyond the end of the roof.
Glad to know it was helpful for you! Cheers!! 👍
Love it! Wonderful editing and format.
😀
This is very very thoughtful to show persons thanks you !!
My pleasure!! 😀
Short and very informative video., thanks.
Thank you. Glad to know it was helpful!
Very impressed with your video!! So professional. And I am so glad that I ran across it before I began my gutter project. Thank you so much!
Thanks for your kind words, but, as I indicated, these are things I found while I installed it for the first time. :)
Great tips! Thank you for sharing 👍👍
You are so welcome!
thank you!!! hopefully I won't be adding my own three mistakes!
Glad to know it was helpful!
Saved me making 3 newbie mistakes lol
That’s exactly what I wanted to hear! 😀😜
Outstanding! Thank you!
Glad to help!
AWESOME JOB
Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome man. Thank you
You bet!
Very nice. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
thanks for ur sharing..
My pleasure! Hope you don't have to experience these obvious mistakes! :)
Thank you for the video and tips! I need to gutter a large shed.
Yes, you can do it! I did this originally for the backside of my house because the price estimation was out of my league. Although I made a lot of mistakes, they are working good so far!
Great tips... thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you- I will not make your mistakes, but make my own new mistakes
:)
This was very helpful
:)
My main concern was how much to gutter to extend beyond the roof. I will add an inch or two to each side. Thank you. Can always trim, better to not have to add.
Mine is about 3 inches just to be safe. I think it is always a good idea to look at it when it rains so that you can make sure where the drip ends up.
Good stuff
Glad you enjoyed
Thank you!
My pleasure!
Thank you for this video! It did help! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Really did hope you wouldn't make the same mistakes. They are kind of obvious but you cannot see them once you are in this whole process. By the way, I am going to release a video of how I tackled with utility lines (power, cable, phone) before installing the gutter. Please stay tuned.
BABO Roof most definitely! I will ! Thanks again!
Super helpful - thank you!
All these points are quite straightforward once you watch them, but I happened to miss them when I was into it. Hopefully you don't make the same mistakes! :)
1:22 positive overlap 😃
Hahahah, you are so right. :)
@@babochon Thanks for the vid man it's always nice to see things talked through with a video example. Like the corner water-stream, top notch :)
Helpful info here & your other ones too. Had some new gutters put on. The end caps leak & drip for about 20 minutes after rain stops. How would you fix that please?
What sealant did you use?
@@babochon I do not know. I'm thinking they did not do a good bead of it, just squirted on . Does that sound logical?
pretty informative
Glad it was helpful!
0utstanding!👍
🙏
awesome video
Hope you learned something from this video. That was my goal!
Gutter replacement is maybe a 2/10 difficulty imo.. but now doing it on a double storey house with large overhang and no scaffolding... It's barely achievable.
😅
Your last photo showing the leaking seam was bad enough yes, but the view also revealed another bad thing: daylight between the guttering and the facia board. It shows there is no metal drip edge coming off the roof from under the shingles that diverts water directly into the guttering. When in place, a drip edge won't allow for daylight to show through any gaps.
That's a nice observation. Thanks for sharing!
Sure it will hows that possible. The drip edge aint going to stop the back of gutter from not. Eing tight against the facia
@@davidsaez5837
Yes, the drip edge WILL stop all water leakage behind the gutter, because the drip edge should go OVER the back of the gutter so water spills directly INTO the gutter. The hidden hanger screws and additional short sheet metal screws bind all these items in place.
Great Video! I subbed! Keep going!
Thank you so much for encouragement!
Thanks, that's three less mistakes to make.
Glad to know it was helpful!
THANK YOU!!!!❤️
You're welcome!!
Thanks to your help, I installed my own gutters and saved 800 dollars!! I’m very grateful and it looks great! ❤️
👍🏾⛈thanks
You bet :)
It was me/ ten fold🙏
:)
You are very 🙂
Hey 😀 I tried to be on the positive side but it definitely needs some knowledge.
Those hidden hangars put gutters at all different sorts of angles. We call em "Lazy Man's Hangars"
Learned a new terminology today. Thanks, man!
Doesn't have to be that way, their angle and bend can be adjusted.
in the beginning. if you need to extend your gutter beyond they roof. The roof are build buy a noob.
🤔
Obvious points if u ask me, but worth mentioning for sure!
:)
"it was not easy"
-looks pretty easy...
--oh.
😅
Damn it, I cut mine maybe 1/2 an inch wider than the total length... and saw this after!
:)
Props for showing your mistake. But I laughed hysterically when you connected the downspouts incorrectly.
Yeah, I also laughed at myself. But back then, I guess I was not thinking straight.

4 ask a company that does seamless gutters for gutters.
As you may have noticed, this is a diary video in case you want to install gutters by yourself.
I would rather have a small dribble at the end of the roof than have the gutter extend past the end of the roof. It looks like hell and all your neighbors will think you don't know how to use a tape measure.
My point is to let you know the gutter should collect all the rain water from your roof. The roof end doesn’t really stand out as much as your neighbors would notice it.
Someone needs to take your tools away from you.
Agreed. Did he really use a bit holder as a driver?
@@Ilanawolf12 Hey, this was a DIY project. I used whatever I had without buying more. Please cut me a little slack. :)
music ruins it
Well, back then I felt the music was appropriate. For most of recent videos I don't include music anymore. :)
As a professional gutter installer(20+years)I find your video is a joke. 1 there's a thing called Seamless Gutter where you don't have to tie gutter together every scene is a potential leak. 2 the ceiling you're using is garbage.3 you don't need to drop your gutter 3 inches in order to get the water to flow to the downspout. Try a less of a pitch and your gutter will come out looking a lot nicer water will draw itself just like when you siphon out of a gas tank the gasoline goes up the hose and down the hose water will draw itself and pull itself to the downspout hole if you have a slight pitch.
Hey, man. First of all, this is a DIY project. One of the factors of doing this is to reduce the installation cost. I am not trying to be a professional gutter installer. As far as I know, seamless gutter is NOT cost friendly (aside from finding them) and I don't think there is an easy way you can do it on your own without hiring gutter installers. Plus when there is a damage, you have to replace the entire gutter. I simply wanted to share what I experienced during the first time gutter installation. My focus was slightly different.
Why does everyone have to be such a dickhead? There's a polite way to tell people they're doing something wrong. Nobody would talk to a complete stranger like this face to face. Everyone's such a tough guy for absolutely no reason.
Lol I would rather have to join gutters myself than hire a contractor to do seamless and have to take a 2nd mortgage out to pay for it. Gutter companies are worse than used car salesmen.
Mr. Seamless Gutter Man is not trying to be helpful, he just wants to trash your video. He needs to learn how to be tactful.
Pro to Pro / I also started installing seamless back in 1977 / I can also find alot of mistakes when watching most the home owners or handman type videos on the do it yourselfers / I do find that most are not to bad / but there are some that should be taken down / I install all my gutters level with the earth / no slope at all / I have found that once the water gets over 1/4 of a inch the water will find the down spout hole and when the sun comes back out the little of water left in will just dry up / there are a lot of opions to what ever anyone says / but as you and I know even Pro to Pros the way we ALL hang gutters will change a bit / but we get it installed and most of the jobs out there come out nice (most).
