- Guys, this is my new pole saw. I decide, after much research and reading online, to go with Stihl, which matches a couple of chain saws I have. I like the Stihls and they have always performed well for me. This saw weighs 17.6 lbs and is 9' collapsed and extends another 4 foot to get to 13.6 full length. the stated reach is only 11.6 (from the handle where you hold on). In this video, I show you guys the saw, the stuff that came with it, and how it starts cold, hot and how it cuts. Spring tree trimming is on! Please subscribe and thumbs up if you appreciate the video. Take care, Clay
i work for a equipment rental company and we are a stihl dealer. this this absolutely rocks.
You working at a stihl shop, what do you think about thous 4 mix engines?
Jeff M they're awesome👌i use to work for the city doing landscaping and man did that pole saw get the job done every time we needed it
I haven't seen a video of checking the chain tension , the basics before beginning use , oiling chain, step by step safety . prep checks .. but this is the best video I've watched thank you.
Elizabeth Thompson - you are welcome. Good input, I may make a follow on video showing the setup and typical maintenance for this saw. Glad this was helpful to you, take care, Clay
it is soooo satisfying trimming those trees. I recently trimmed our property and it looks great! The trimmers are really fun!
I thought the 131 had a 14” bar on it. I just bought a 103. I like the structural integrity of the shaft design and the quick lock on the shaft. Regardless both are awesome tools! I
How does this video have 85 dislikes? Who sits around and hates on bad ass pole saws?
Good video, man!
Aaron2081 Thanks Aaron, who knows maybe some other brand loyalties going on. Also several trolls have lectured me on various safety gear. This was just a quick video to show folks how this model works. People who don't make videos and understand what it takes are usually the most critical. Haha. Thanks again! Clay
I'm not haten on the saw. I'm haten cause he's a Cowboy fan.
Id say its because he needs a mic and the wind is messing him up.
Poulan pro pole saw much lighter breaks in half only $199 with close to the same power but only an 8 inch bar but with Limbing that's almost people need
@@daniellovelace5036 hating**
LOl...cool video. I laughed at the start with the oiler cap. I've had the same issues from time to time. An inter-continental WTF is going on here moment as you work out how it fits without breaking it.
sthil should take note lol
Thanks for the video. Is this one of the longest pole saws out there? I'm pretty dedicated to stihl tool so they are pretty much a no brainer for me
So I watched your video and I wish you all the best in good health prosperity and happiness. As I sthil owner I gotta say, if you cant lift the saw with the cap it ain't in. If you but a new saw you buy new chainsaw pants(not chaps cause chaps slide and dont protect 360degrees of your leg
Also you can make an awesome backpack rig so you dont burn your arms before lunch.
I just got one myself I love it I use to have a troybuilt rs720 8" pole saw I cut a large limb and it rolled back on the saw pined it to the the ground and broke the saw off the shaft and totaled the saw I used it for 5 years, but I love the sthil ht131
Those caps a a pain at times. There have been recalls on them, if you take it bake to the dealer they'll replace it for you.
I have an older Stihl pole saw.. Doesn't have the chip exhaust of the newer models. Have to clean it more. You really need to buy one of their Forrest helmets. Very easy to get hit in the head. Those big limbs are very dangerous. Know by experience.
The Dallas cowboys ☆ star
Made the pull harder!😁
Aw man... that hurt...! haha
Wear a hard hat too. A limb you are cutting could hit your head or a limb from higher up in the tree could fall. Bad news.
I like how you have a dust mask (which really isn't needed) but you don't have ear protection. I would choose earmuffs/earplugs any day over a dust mask :/
Kinda quick to judge my friend. I have a bad allergy to mold that is usually found on trees. I have to wear a mask or will suffer the consequences. Ear protection, hard hat, etc should always be used. This was a quick video to help folks out there thinking of buying this tool, not really a long cutting session. I definitely wear ear protection when I'm not making a video and most times even when making the videos (if you watch my other videos) but it makes hearing the camera man hard and I wasn't doing much here. Take care and thanks for watching and commenting even though I think you were a little quick to judge....
also, this saw is really quite, nothing like a full size saw.
Ah ok well if u have allergies then yes wear a dust mask please but ok i only said that after watching hundreds of other videos with guys mowing for hours and no ear protection.
I buy the ear plugs (usually orange) by the large bag at Home Depot. Big fan of ear protection. I didn't always think that way and I have some hearing loss.
Yes my Stihl trimmer is also pretty quiet as is my backpack blower (tho its not a Stihl) but I still always wear ear protection- cant hurt you any more than if you didn't can it? also i guess im a bit more sensitive to people not using ear protection given both my grandparents on my mum's side have completely lost their hearing in both ears and my grandpa now also has tinnitus (constant ringing in the ears) due to not having hearing protection available when they were still working
the 300 hours everyone is concerned about is only the emission compliance period , has nothing to do with engine life, that as always depends on maintenence and care hope this clears everyones 300 hour bull shit up!
+bigdadtrav Thank you for that clarification. Good to know. C
Best pole saw ever made they are all shit now
How Can I Get this Products
Chandpur PBS-2 The saw was $649.00 USD and can be bought at many places that sale pro Landscapeing equipment. “Small engine repair” is another search you can do in your area that may result in a authorized dealer.
Sounds like the chain is to tight
Robert Brown - Good ear. It may have been. It was brand new, first use. It did start sounding better a little into the shoot.
You buy that gas and do commercial work? Damn how much are you making?!
Jonny G - Haha, no, it was a one time purchase to get a free extra chain and two more years tacked on to the warranty. Heck, I mix my own gas with ethanol free fuel in a 2 gal container. I don’t do this as a pro, just my 11 acres.
for 649 it should be able to fell a whole tree
It's meant for the professional tree service industry so it is heavy duty and meant to take a beating. It's a good saw for sure.
very poor audio
Sorry about that. Wind was getting to my mic.
@@Texasknowhow looking at the HT103 but the HT131 looks like a better unit. Anyway those Stihl helmets with the hearing protection and that full face thing are pretty key I know you been hammered on for safety.
No ear plugs ...
TheFrameoff - Yeah, you probably skipped over me saying I didn’t wear them on purpose for the making of the video. I always wear my ear and eye protection.
Ok , I believe you ... lol
I stopped watching once he couldn’t even close the oil reservoir.
Just so you know, there was a recall for that year made reservoir caps as they were made incorrectly and got so many complaints. Also, I could have easily edited that out, but was trying to show real life use of the saw for a first time buyer. Thanks for watching as much as you did.
I really hate the stupid f ing flip caps. I recently did not get my 362 chainsaw gas cap seated and spilled gas all over myself. My favorite saw is 046 with screw caps.
Its not that caps fault that you're stupid. I like the flip cap,
Ok. GFY
Will Robinson - turns out there was a recall on a certain run of the caps. Mine was one of them. I like them normally. Little harsh calling someone stupid.
I have severe hip arthritis thus preventing me from going up a ladder.....hip replacement surgery soon. The Stihl Kombi system enables me to still do yard work even though I'm side tracked for a while...thank you Stihl !!!!
The strap doesn't let you stretch out your arms so it sucks and the saw is very heavy. Stihl list it at 17.3 pounds but it feels like 30 pounds.
A handle would have worked much better than the crappie strap.
Surprisingly, it really doesn't get up too high even extended out .Sometimes I have used a latter .
Two man, one with the Stihl FS 460 to open the trail for the second with this tool(HT 131) would do a fast and nice job.
Claus MS - Exactly! Would be a good way to knock it out.
Starting is always a issue with me!I put mine flat on the floor to start it,but it sometimes touches the floor when pulling the starter!🤦♂️
Cool video. I have the same one. I noticed your title say 131, but that’s actually the older style 130. ( I wish they still made them like that. I hate the newer designs personally since all the numbers end in 1 now)
Can someone get a prune unit after they know the kombi system can do that as wells do not understand.unless you have lots and lots of trees you can be doing that year after year,,,,21 of March 2023 going to pickup KM131R AND FOURBATACHEMENTall with TAX ,,,CANADA THAT IS 1845.00in Europe its like 1725..00 but euros did the math. going to take it to Europe..
Such a good looking unit. Love the thickness of the pole allowing it to be used as a handle. Nice purchase mate
yeah its made by there weed wacker motor plus if dont want use the saw any more it can be conferted to weed wacker wich is nice
I watch your video got excited went out and got me one of those units, it pretty handy. I follow your cutting techniques and it was pretty easy , so in a nutshell Thank you.
Nice! You are welcome. Glad the video helped you out. Take care, Clay
Hello my fellow Texan. New follower here. I’m shopping for pole saws for our pecan orchard. Great video, congrats on your channels success, we are trying to grow as well.
Heritage Farms Texas - Thanks for that! Are you down in the San Saba area? I know they have a bunch of orchards there.
@@Texasknowhow that's same stuff i use moto mix i love that stuff better then getting mix and going to gas station for feul wich i gave up using feul can for my stihl and using moto mix exspensive stuff but keeps the motor clean
@@michaelmactavish1728 - Yeah, for the DIYer and just at home it makes a lot of sense. For those watching that run their equipment 5 out of 7 days a week year round, it’s not cost effective. They still mix it in volume, but most find a non ethanol pure fuel source for their base gas. We have one station in town that has one pump that is No Ethanol. It is about $1.00/gallon more expensive than their 10-15% Ethanol fuel.
@@Texasknowhow i was planing on getting a 2nd kombi a km131r but holy crap 5 piece would cost me $1,184.75 wich i looked at amonzon and found my self a nice most powerful 52cc chikura with 14 piece wich 15 piece in total of pretty cheap of $565.00 and free shipping wich better price then 5 pice stihl and chikura uses stihl parts as well wich is nice
What's the price for this saw? I know you have an agent in my country (Guyana, South America) but they don't carry this saw and I have lots of trees to prune in my yard.
Hello, we are in North Texas. Actually close to the Texas/Ok border. North of Dallas.
Heritage Farms Texas - I know that area well. I was just crossing the Red River on 75 this past weekend. Best of luck to you with your business. I may drop by sometime. May be a great backdrop for a video shoot! If you were up for that. Go to www.Texasknowhow.com then “ask a question”. That will get us talking via email.
Stihl makes great products of top quality, but when it comes to pole saws, the Echo PPT-280 is the best of all.
It's killing the husqvarna!
Hello thx for the video. What is the best way to transport this machine? it is very long and I'm afraid it will break
Should try the carbide chain with a new bar. Really lets you cut for a long time without having to sharpen the chain.
But when they need sharpened they are a pain
I wouldn't recommend strap just gets in the way.
Satan Ybarra - Totally agree. I don’t use it any more. Thanks for the comments and for watching. Clay
Satan Ybarra strap is only good if your on a ladder to me. Or walking with it a while
Just bit the bullet and bought one for my tree removal biz..this was the only choice for me for a pole saw, best one in the market. Second shout out on that oil (and gas) cap. Really they need a redesign on that...however their probably making good money on replacement from ones broke by trying to tighten them when they are not "cammed" back yet.
dprevish100 - You’ll love it man!
Great video dude you are a wild man with that thing lol extend it out all the way out !👍🏻
For that price, there is no excuse for a bar head which cannot be turned and angled to any position for every trimming need. No sale!
Red Woods Dude right!? Why stihl? Why?
The oiler caps are a PITA.
Be careful with the oiler cap, its very very easy to remove and reinstall , , just take your time to install it only about half turn to install then flaten the tab.
Yes, you are correct IF the cap is not a defective one. Mine was part of a recall as it was made incorrectly at the factory. That’s why it gave me so much trouble. I’ve used these type caps for years; I couldn’t for the life of me determine why I was having so much trouble, haha.
The engine sound and looks like my fs130 brush cutter
sherwin salvatori the 131 is just a 130 with a new carb
That is True.....Ladders and Chainsaws do not mix.
I have the same one and love it. I have had it for over 16 years and it still runs awesome. I have only had to replace the fuel filter and give it the recommended maintenance. This saw will put some wood on the ground. I start out with it unextended at first and then go back with it half extended then with it full extended if needed. I highly recommend this saw. It is still sold today at the same price I purchased it for . 👍
That is awesome Steve. A friend of mine is using my saw now and he has filled a 16' trailer with limbs as high as he can load it! haha
How you're up the idle
Sounds like the chain is running to tight. No Safety Equipment?
Rich Michau thats how it sounds normally. Ive used a few and they all sound the same😂
Safety equipment besides glasses and a mask? Ok, maybe a hard hat.
Texas know how! Lmao All they have to do is dodge everything that falls. No safety equipment needed.
I have had many still power pruners and I have to say the131 is the biggest piece of shit I ever owned.this stihl pruner was underpowered the bar is to thin and will bend in the slightest pinch. They figured the narrow kerf would make up for the underpowered motor. Than after 16 years to put the cutter on the right side.the adjustment is the only improvement I could find .listen too it what a dog sounds like the chains to right but not. I know it's a 2stroke 4 stroke but it has no ass at all like its predecessor. Do not buy this or you will be disappointed like me.
Now you need a little chipper to take care of the brush and make yourself some mulch.
Skid Industries - Yes I do. I just piled it all in my burn pile. Watch this video to see a neat way to start it on fire -- m.ruclips.net/video/0hSdh9D77LY/видео.html
How does it work on soaked hardwood?
I ask because i work with less then optimal conditions, would have been useful after the hurricane.
Works great on Oak, I cut a lot of those limbs. I've also used it on Walnut (in the video a little bit).
I agree with you on that one I don't like the flip caps either I use the stihl fs 110 r loop handle Grass trimmer and it doesn't have the flip cap instead it has the screw cap
Sabrina Jackson Ran saws professionally for several years, they flip caps take a little getting used to but in the long run the are easier, faster and last longer than the old screw ins. I can see the desire to stick with screw caps though.
I use Stihl saws multiple times a week and always get messed up with that oil cap
Thanks Kevin, I felt like a dork trying to get that back on right! Lol
I want one too
J G - they are nice!
ruclips.net/video/W6kd2FF9x4g/видео.html
that pole saw sounds like it dont have enough power..pluse its a 4 cycle....not a 2 cycle motor.
On our fs90 fuel cap, Stihl did a recall, had ours replaced for free with a different type..
Thanks for the input on that. I need to see if they will do the same for this oil tank cap... it is still very hard to re-engage once off. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Clay
That baby Is SWEET!!!
no offense but those limbs aren't even that high up. You can have used a pruning saw and a ladder and it still be safe.
Yep, could have.
Everyone hates there caps too.ive hated them for years but I deal with them.I will not deal with this sorry excuse for a power pruner.
Good video: how short can the pole saw be when disassembled. I want to buy one but I am concern about the length to store it. Any viewers response is appreciated. Thanks.
I have at least 15 stihl saws 10 husks and I'm telling you this pruner is shit
Poulan pro pole saw is much better deal
Stihl...You're paying for that name some also
The 131 pole saw I bought is great!!!! From experience, pole saw are extremely delicate, and you have to know WTF your doing,or you will be buying replacement parts. This saw is a bit heavy, and a bit awkward, but I routinely use it, occasionally I climb, and use it way up high..just remember to be gentle with this saw!!!
EXCELENTE INFORMACION
Just purchased this baby! Here to learn!
Still love mine!
I really don't understand why are these pole chainsaws from Stihl and Husquarna so expensive. Its a small engine with a pole. It shouldn't be more expensive then a low end Stihl chainsaw, up to 250$ tops. But these cost around 800-900$.
Agree, they are pricey. I can say mine is a great and very reliable tool. Solid and consistent when I pull it out to a job site.
You answered my question about the price. A marvelous device, but way too expensive for me. The extended length is a great feature.
I am not a profesdional. Just a homeowner with many trees that need pruning. Any suggestions about something less expensive?
I just threw away an electric pole saw whose chain kept coming off constantly.
Thanks for posting.

Harbor Freight sells an amazing electric pole saw, that prunes like a butter. I would wait for a coupon in the paper. I have seen them go for as low as 59.99.
i would just use the strap to hang the unit on the wall in the garage.
James Enloe - Yep, about all it’s used for. You nailed that.
ruclips.net/video/W6kd2FF9x4g/видео.html
He bought a pole chain saw first, then went looking for a tree to lop. Lol!😂
the oil caps need revising. I often have the same problem as the guy in this video. on one occasion, I thought it was right - but I left a trail of oil on a clients driveway. never seem to have a problem with the petrol cap - which is the same system
evan King see my other comments on this. They recalled a series of these caps that were made incorrectly.
to many adds
Wehe He - Thanks for the feedback. I wouldn’t have them at all, but it’s only way to make a few pennies on RUclips any more. Appreciate you, Clay
Bellissima macchina
Mantap dan saya butuh ini, kemana bisa saya pesan dan berapa harganya ???.
I would have "liked" your video but I can't....that Cowboys hat is hideous. And I'm in Texas.
BLA Fishing - I tell ya what, the way they been playing.... I’m from here so been a fan since little bitty. I’m a little frustrated in them last couple years.
I bought my MTX China made pole saw, comes with hedge trimmer for just 200 dlrs new. Works just fine.
You trust the Chinese quality control on a pole saw? Good luck with that.
649 I mean it’s nice but how often am I going to use this? Oh but they threw in a extra chain, I get it. lol
James Lund - I use the heck out of it... you may not need a professional unit if you don’t have 11 acres to keep in front of.
Thanks (from Brazil).
Glad you enjoyed the video. I appreciate you letting me know all the way from Brazil!
the reservoir oil cap gives trouble when needs to be locked, hopefully Sthil takes notes on this, maybe using a plastic less thick to allow the operator to see tru and not to open the reservoir just to check for the oil level.
Nice video I enjoyed watching.
I totally agree, clear tank would be good. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care, Clay
Great video.
Cutting branches like butter
Helena Van - Exactly, it’s addicting for sure. My kids always start saying, “that’s good dad! This is going to be a lot of work!!” Because they are pulling all the limbs to the brush pile. Haha
looks good to me how much income can one make with this too
I would think that a person owning this could charge $50/hr, but I would probably quote a job as a whole. This thing will leave a ton of limbs in it's wake in a short time. You will need to do something with all that... and that is most of the work.
How is this saw for tops of smaller trees where a horizontal cut is needed for topping?
Depending on the limb size you plan to cut, a heavy duty hedge trimmer might do better. If the trees are a good size and you need to get way up there from a standing position this saw is great. I still love mine. Great purchase for me.
Stihl really blew it with this piece of junk.
How is this saw holding to the test of time?
Shinda6917 - It is holding up well. Against my better judgement I loaned it to a friend. It came back with a bent bar and chain. I could tell an attempt to straighten it had just further messed up the groove where the chain runs. Regardless he filled a 16’ trailer with limbs. After that I let it sit in the shop for a few months. Went to use it a week or so back and it won’t start. Carb cleaner will run it for a brief period so it’s the carb clogged up. I’m really just ranting a little here - It’s held up well. It does come with a very thin curf bar/chain that you will love, but you can’t abuse.
how bout them cowboys!!!
I'm hoping for a good season in the fall!
I wonder if they sell the telescoping pole by itself? For the Kombi system?
Not sure. Check with a dealer.
lol have you even ran this saw? and plz do not call it a blade. lost all your cred on the review imo
Donny Lansing - did you watch the video? I “ran” it on the video. I wasn’t looking for cred, just trying to help others.
@@Texasknowhow you're right. I was just being an asshole. Sorry. Thanks fr the review.

Great video
Thanks Gregory! Happy New Year to you and your's!
Should have tried a Silky pole saw before buying the stihl saw.
Never heard of those Ray, may have to look at them next time.
Now that I looked it up... I may get one but I really need a powered pole saw for all the cutting I do.
I own the 12ft Hayauchi and I love it, it cuts incredibly fast. Those Japanese still make some fine blades.
Fine for a home owner....Not a farmer with windbreaks....
thanks for the info great video.
How far do these extend out to please?
Hi Tim, I talk about this in the first 36 seconds of the video… haha (11.5’)
Can it cut more than twigs??
+Wildavismedia Absolutely. Since making this video I've used this saw extensively on my 11 wooded acres. I've cut all kinds of stuff and even cut down small trees just so I don't have to go get my other saw. Also, after sitting all winter, it started on the first pull after pumping the primer a few times. Good saw, I still love it.
Cool! thanks.... great v
yes it cuts big limbs
i have cut limbs up to 8 to 10 inches across
lol I've used these yes just twigs. Have it extended all the way and try to cut a 10" branch u can't put any pressure on the saw
ok great thanks you for your time
Polesaws are hard on the supporting arms elbow for some odd reason.
I think it's because you tend to hold that non-trigger arm pretty much still, only using it to micro move and as a pivot point. It's sometimes the continuous small movements with accuracy and load bearing that irritate the joints and fatigue the muscles. Think of how many folks have carpel tunnel syndrome from mousing all day...
I hear ya worked small scale salvage 1 winter here in Canada we had 3 polesawyers while i was a normal saw user.Stopped to talk to them and they all said the same thing. One of them fell a tree with their polesaw too lol.
