    So this video is about a new electrical extension - for those of you out there that are creating electrical drawings in SketchUp - what do you think about this extension?

      Yes this is a very valuable extension; I like the 2d applied with the 3D. I would just draw the wiring in layout as per normal, like which switch controls what lights. This will make it very easy. I like the layer control, too. Thanks Justin and MeDeek.

    Oooh, was playing with this extension, and noticed that the symbol legend updates every time you click on it, to add or subtract things to only show the elements that are actually in the model. It's really sweet. If you delete one of the items, then click on the legend button, the legend will remove that item from the legend. Awesome.

    • @nathanielwilkerson6217
      @nathanielwilkerson6217 3 года назад

      Yes, that is by design. When you click on the legend button after it is defined/drawn it will regenerate the legend and look to see which components are active in the model, this way it stays in sync with your actual model.

    This extension needs to be able to connect elements with wiring to show what fixtures are controlled by what switch. Also, what elements are on the same circuit. Graphically placing fixtures where they go is cool, but not much use if they're not connected by wire.

    • @eeedee1298
      @eeedee1298 Год назад

      Absolutely... Making a switch or type of switch is easy, it is the electrical routes for different circuits that are difficult and needed.

    would be great to add the wiring functionality (kind of like the Oob electrical plugin). This plugin looks better - but just that one missing feature would be the icing on the cake :)

      That would be helpful, especially for creating plans!

    • @medeekdesign

      I've thought about adding in some sort of geometry for the wiring between outlets, switches and service panels however the problem with this is that the wiring path can become very convoluted, even within a simple residential project. Typically the wiring will be within the walls taking the shortest path as possible (within reason). A wiring module would need to have a fairly complex path finding algorithm and would also need to be able to determine what geometry is a wall and what is not. I'm not saying this is impossible but it will take a good deal more thought and effort to figure out a viable and functional solution. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts and ideas on the matter. I am willing to entertain adding this functionality if I can see a path forward, no pun intended.

    • @jasonmcdaniel8212
      @jasonmcdaniel8212 3 года назад +1

      @@medeekdesign Most plans in residential markets just string arcs between fixture and switch legs, so that would be much simpler, and meet most designer's conventions and needs--maybe this approach means you can add it without as much programming, making your life and your user's life easier when "wiring up" a house plan. Great work, and I'm excited to see this BIM and design sensible functionality you're bringning to SKU.

    • @medeekdesign
      @medeekdesign 3 года назад

      @@jasonmcdaniel8212 If one only needs to string arcs then it is just as easy to use the SketchUp native tools to do this.

    • @jasonmcdaniel8212
      @jasonmcdaniel8212 3 года назад +2

      @@medeekdesign Yes, agreed, for purely drafting purposes, I use Layout and add the arcs. It's tedious and takes time, whereas if a fixture and switch auto-linked, it'd cut that time out was the thinking. And, with a link to the associated light switch you could then take it a step farther to create an on/off state via layers to turn rendered light sources on and off during VR tours maybe.

    • @medeekdesign
      @medeekdesign 5 лет назад

      I am working on a system whereby the user can assign devices to specific circuits. It might be useful to have some sort of load calcs that can be performed based on the specific devices found in a circuit. Please feel free to email me your thoughts on the matter, I am still very much in the conceptual stage with all of this.

    So weird that they would not include the ability to add the wiring diagram - still great tool tho.

    • @nathanielwilkerson6217
      @nathanielwilkerson6217 3 года назад

      The primary focus has been to draw the various electrical fixtures (ie. switches, outlets, lights, panels etc...), both 3D and 2D symbols. Drawing the wiring in the 2D plan usually involves stringing some arcs between the switch and light symbols. This can be done easily enough with the native SketchUp tools hence there is no need to provide plugin specific tools for this task.

  • @havenisse2009

    Unfortunately he only focuses on the North American market. He should investigate the different standards used in switches and electricals around the world, so that a global option could be "choose country" - and immediately the switches created would be British, German, Danish or Mexican. All the typical outlets have CAD drawings online for every country, so it would be simple to do. And suddenly his market share would be so much bigger. Add further possibility to run wires (definable color scheme) and the extension would be so much more value.
