    Hi there, I like your videos, they are a great source of knowledge for beginners and also for advanced users. So thanks for going to the trouble of making all of these videos. I also just want to throw in, that I do not like the scale tool for flipping objects, because it has shown over and over again that many users try to do a quick one and make scaling mistakes as a result. I do prefer, in order to make sure all stays accurate, to use the context command flip along red, green, or blue axis.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  6 лет назад

      Thanks very much Olav - I think this one comes down to workflow preference - for me I have trouble picking the correct axis to flip along on the first try, so I use the scale tool. That said, if users have trouble scaling to the right value, they should probably use the flip along command instead. Thanks!

    7(kinda) and 9. With 7, while I didn't know about this, I haven't had a project where I would really need it yet either. 9 is something I never realized and I would sometimes get frustrated where it would select what I want and sometimes not, now I understand how it works!
    I've just kinda been amateurishly dabbling in Sketchup for a year or two, so I have grasped many of the fundamentals, but am very far from proficient. Still, this video was helpful and interesting!

    I am new to sketchup and what i have downloaded is sketchup make 2015. Before watching youre videos i have a lot of question but now some of it were answered. Thanks for your great videos. As other were saying youre a great teacher.
    I am planning to buy cnc machine for a hobby because ive seen some of its capabilities and they were great. But i notice that i needed design software, and cam software.
    What catches my attention with this sketchup is how easy to use. And it has a cam capability with its sketchucam plugin.
    I have installed sketchucam and shape bender succesfully and able to open it, but why is it that i can not open my bezier tool. Please help thank you. GOD BLESS.

    Yea it annoys me how many people don't use group & components. So many of those trash youtube videos of "speed modelling" really set some REALLY BAD EXAMPLE to new users. Or when downloading stuff on 3DWarehouse, stuff are sticking together it's so annoying to fix or apply textures...
    [No.10 movement] - I will suggest use the [K] xray-lines trick. Often time you want to move something but stuff blocking your cursor you can't make reference, or just making a move that don't align to axis - Just press [K] key, now you can move the objects to whatever reference points or lines you may have precisely and very quickly.
    Tip: ALWAYS DRAW REFERENCES. No matter it's a simple line or use the tape & protractor tools. References allows moving complicated components around at pin-point accuracy. Here's one example: imgur.com/ACUhaOP

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  6 лет назад

      Oooh - that's a good one - I haven't even been doing that, but I can see how using the Xray lines for inferenceing could really help with moving objects around. Thanks!!!!!

    I found a great tip for organising layers on the "VBO Sketchup Documentation Solutions" facebook page: facebook.com/groups/VBOsolutions/
    first create a numbered layer i.e. per floor level of a building: 0_---------cellar-----, 1_----------ground floor-----, 2_---------second floor-----, etc...
    then group the objects per floor and assign them to layers named 0_foundation, 0_walls, 0_equipment, 0_furniture, 0_people, etc..., 1_foundation, 1_walls, 1_equipment, 1_furniture, 1_people, etc..., 2_foundation, 2_walls, 2_equipment, 2_furniture, 2_people, etc..., and so on
    now you can turn the visibility of all objects per floor on and off, just by clicking on the corresponding layer's visibility button
    if I have not explained clearly, please visit the "VBO Sketchup Documentation Solutions" facebook page and scroll down to september 24 2017 there is an example with a running video
    works like a whistle for me !!!
    VBO also have an amazing plugin for drawing pipes available for free in the extension wharehouse, complete with fittings
    check the 5 video's : extensions.sketchup.com/en/comment/87471#comment-87471

    10 Mistakes
    1. Not Grouping
    2. Click and Drag
    3. not inferencing axes
    4. Adding unnecessary shit that won't show in final view
    5. Not modeling symmetrical objects by part/component
    6. Not organizing into separate tags/layers
    7. Not saving scenes (for presentation)
    8. Not using autosave
    9. Improper usage of 2 selection tools
    10. Imprecise movement of objects (not using inferencing and anchor points)

    Probably too late now, but it would have been useful if you had referenced the version of SU that you're using. The software has changed many times over the years that unless a user is using the exact version you employ here it is impossible to follow your instructions. For example, in Nov. 2022 the free version does not look or function anything like whatever version you are using. Vendors arbitrarily modifying versions, adding or deleting functions, and deploying new graphic interfaces is a scourge.

    Another good one. Your videos consistently find the right balance of detail and efficiency. Never excessive nor incomplete. And you devote the right amount of time to each one. Great for a "working" coffee break or (as now) on a Saturday morning when the part of my household that doesn't get up before 10:00am is still asleep.
    Been using SketchUp for a few months, and still didn't know about saving views. Worth a few minutes to get that tip!

    I would put: not looking into plug-ins as the last point. I know architects that have been modelling with SU for years and never even tried a single plug-in. And thats exactly how they teached us in university. We all accepted vanilla SU as the given thing and so a lot of us had soooo much unnecessary work that could have been solved in seconds with random rotation, mirror copy, cut to plane or even just the Solid Inspector.

    "Sketchup guesses" yes, that is one of the biggest problems with sketchup. You can't give it the coordinates you want it to go to. The coordinates have to be hidden in the code somewhere, but you can't click on a point and find its coordinates, you can't go to a position, and the only place that has an identity is the origin. Guessing is enforced.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  5 месяцев назад

      This is an odd comment to me, because it seems to be implying something that isn't true, which is that SketchUp models aren't accurate. First off, most of the time when modeling what's important is the location of objects relative to other objects (like lines making up walls at a certain depth, etc), which are 100% accurate in the 3D space, not the relative location in the 3D space. Second, you can get the coordinates of any point in the 3D space using the annotation tool. Third - I've very rarely seen anyone need to model using coordinates unless they're writing some kind of extension. "Guessing is enforced" is a very inaccurate statement

    I come back to Sketchup every now and then. Every time the same mistakes is made. Sticky geometry, forget to group and/or make component. Misaligning objects. Usually I get quite far with my model and then I start over doing it right the second time. I do love Sketchup because it is easy to use but you get punished hard for doing stupid mistakes. Love you videos. This one was right on the money.

    Quick question please: How do you match a corner where 3 radius meet?
    I have a product with 3 corners where 3 external faces meet and they have the same radius on the corners.

    Is there an option to be able to use a photo and use it on sketch up, I want to take a pic of the front of my house and play around with different textures, colours and cladding.

    #2 - I just learned yesterday after using SU for 5 years! Where was I when the video came out! #5 only sounds like a good idea - trust me - the moment you make it you will want to fix only one corner. Every time I get smart - I find out I wasn't.
