  • The new currency called ARX will change the way we acquire paint jobs, ship kits, and all.
    You can either buy packs of ARX “bucks” or earn them through game play.
    We interview Community Manager Will Flanagan for detailed answers about this new feature.

    Hopes: massive decrease in cosmetic costs and not too much effort to earn ARX.
    Expectations: ehhhhhhhhhhhhh
    But a way to earn cosmetics through in-game activities is extremely welcome either way

      I hope fuel ratting would be included in those "in-game activities".
      Not that I do it - they have this whole weird system where you have to be trained and "announce jumps" because apparently it's impossible to refuel somebody if you're not an underling to some power-crazed people on IRC or wherever they are. I think some of them take it a bit too seriously.

      Don't worry. It will be such a terrible grind that you will be encouraged to pay... just like every other full priced game that comes with cash shops...

      @@C.I... I'd say they do the things they do the way they do simply to keep it standardized across all rats. Otherwise, it'd just be a mess if each one spoke their own way. You can refuel someone without saying a word if you'd want, but for the experience for the client to be consistent, everyone must be on the same page. Thus the training.

  • @lvl89wrlk21

    Oh yay, we're going to end up with the same deal you get with bioware points. Where everything will cost a bit under or a bit over the Arx points in a certain pack. So you'll be converting more money into credit which you'll never be able to exchange into the exact amount you need for a product.
    As a person who's bought a lot of paintjobs and ship kits from the store, probably far more then I should've. I'm happy there's now a way to earn customisations in game and I understand how the Arx system will help cover the loss in sales from players who'd rather grind out the points. But I'm not impressed with the loss of exact fund transfers, which I assume will be occurring when this is implemented. As well as the addition of the purchasing option to the main menu, seems a bit too pushy and another 'buy our stuff' advertisement. Which we already get in the launcher.
    This is just my opinion, would be awesome to hear what others think.

    • @Hilko26
      @Hilko26 5 лет назад +1

      Those were exactly my thoughts.
      One thing though, many (shitty) games nowadays seem to have been built from the ground up so it's either a big grind to earn something or you can pay. However since for a long time there was no way to grind for cosmetics in ED there was no incentive for FD to make the game grindier. So I suppose that part of the game is, at least for now it seems, free of that kind of micro-transaction-corruption.

    • @DustinHern
      @DustinHern 5 лет назад +1

      Console players never had the option of exact fund transfers, which is one of the major points addressed in Frontier's statement.
      I play on PS4 so maybe I can shed some light on the issue:
      In order to purchase customizations, players must first pre-load an account with Frontier Points, which are available in only 4 denominations, starting at 300 points for USD $4.99, through 500 and 1000 to 2500 points at a cool $36.99.
      I wish I could tell you as a frame of reference how many points a specific item costs but I've never purchased any points and can't be assed to dig for that information at this time, especially now that it'll stop mattering altogether in about 2 months. But you can rest assured that the problem you mentioned of everything costing a bit more or a bit less than the denominations you're able to purchase is in full swing here. Hot dogs come in packs of 10 - buns come in packs of 8. At least with Arx it's not your REAL MONEY sitting in limbo.
      I feel like offering an alternative to paying irl money for in-game content is a smart move from a PR perspective, in light of recent controversies surrounding

      Hopefully, the frontier store is going to stay around, with its current pricing as well. Don't get me wrong, i fully endorse them adding ways to earn cosmetics, but i afraid people will kill the game for themselves grinding out a paintjob that literally has the value of a coffee in a cheap cafe. The grind will determine if this is good or not. The value and earning speed of the currency, our "hourly wage" so to speak.

    I have another theory, I think this may be Frontier's over arching solution to how the different platforms and their store purchases are run. With a unified system this may make cross platform play feasible...and more importantly for some the merging of accounts on multiple platforms. He's an example; Part of the current issue with cross platform or merging accounts was profit sharing and ecosystems. If you bought ship kits and paint jobs on Console X then Console S could have an issue with you using said items on their ecosystem because they didn't receive any profit share from the transaction. Unify the transaction system and there is no longer a conflict of ecosystems.

    I bought ship pack and some paint jobs for my corvette, got Celeste (oh god yes mommy talk to me more oh, mmmmph!!), a few engine and weapon details and that's it.
    You won't see me buy paint jobs or ship kits for any other ship, MAYYYBE one day but i don't see that coming. Don't even get me started on bobbleheads, i only bought the christmas lights and snowflake cause they were on sale and was near Xmas. But now it feels hilarious to run in a deadly Corvette with christmas lights in the middle of summer.
    P.S. I dropped the game a few months ago. Like wtf am i supposed to do there's nothing "new and exciting" to do. Can't force myself to waste my nights on mainly loading screens (hyperjumps).
    After a long day at work it used to be fantastic to play a chill game like Elite, but that was when i was still a noob and always found out new stuff, every 3 minutes i went "oooh what's that, what's that oooh shiny! The Graphics!"
    But now after 900 hours i have totally lost that enjoyment, it's all about time wasting, loading screens, grinding. and that's it.
    Sad, the reason why i bought a new more powerful PC was Elite Dangerous alone, i wanted to play it so much and experience space, and that i did, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience.
    I don't regret buying Elite or spending 900 hours in it, i only regret not finding a reason to play for another 900 hours.
    I'll be back one day, space is calling to me even now, i can hear it, but that day hasn't come yet. Until then, fly safe commanders!

I got that, then the rest, till 900+ is a complete mist, i have no idea if i did anything meaningful, aside from buying some ships ill never use cause Vette, getting money wich i don't see a reason to use on yet, so im grinding money for ???, etc. So to clarify no, i only got roughly 300 hours of really good gameplay the other 600 i have no idea how to describe other than meaningless loading screens going place to place for no reason, shooting random stuff, landing on a planet for no reason, gather mats even though i don't need them. All meaningless things, just cause i was so desperate to play this game but to no avail, i felt empty.

    I like the idea of being able to earn cosmetics in game. And the option to switch things up at the main menu is nice.
    That's where the good ends, however.
    The way to "create parity across platforms" isn't to make the experience equally terrible for everyone, but rather to bring the lagging implementations up to the higher standards of the best.
    I'm not interested in "points packs", or "arx", or whatever you want to call your scrip system. Because that's what it is. Scrip.
    In the best possible implementation where I can purchase the precise amount I need, it adds another layer of complexity and inconvenience to the purchase. As it is usually implemented - and is planned here - it comes in odd sized blocks that will not match up with anything, so you will always have more or less than needed, forcing money to be 'left on the table'.
    I understand that from a business perspective, that's precisely the point, because it tends to encourage people to spend more so they don't feel they're wasting the money they've already sunk into it - but from the consumer side, this is hostile.
    So while there is some good coming with this change, the scrip system just about ruins the whole thing.

    So, you wont get them from mission rewards. That means two options to me: The good option, you earn them from gaining XP towards ranks, points towards faction relations, minor and major, jumping X number of times, scanning planets, basically performing various positive actions in the game. Or the easy option, you earn 10 ARX every 5 hours of game time, press buy to speed that up.
    I haven't seen any update to Elite Dangerous that suggests they wont take the easy option. I mean they apparently coded a game where HUD colors is a core component of the game engine and must not be touched lest the game cease functioning on every platform.

    I feel like Arx is a neat thing for console players, but I'll be damned if I'm going to go from buying stuff on the frontier store via paypal to having to purchase $30 worth of Arx in-game to buy $23 worth of cosmetics only to have the extra $7 just floating around in the aether.
    It is my honest opinion that attempting to monetize elite in this fashion will 100% kill the cosmetic market of the game, as it's only a matter of time before the cosmetics that cost $5 or less previously start to cost $10 or more due to Arx bundles only coming in $10 bundles or whatever, and the discerning adult hobbyist players (who are the majority of players who buy this kind of stuff in the first place as far as I know) see it for the cash grab it is and either stop buying cosmetics or move on to something different entirely.
    Microtransactions of this type have absolutely no place in Elite imo, so I'm really hoping the cash store stays in place, while the Arx system simply provides an alternative way to earn cosmetics for those who don't want to spend money.

    I think the roll-out of arx should include a one-time distribution of arx based on total accumulated play time; and maybe base ongoing arx bucks on play time, at least. There could be a complex calculation involved, factoring in many factors (i.e. number of jumps, distance covered, etc.). That would provide another direct means of influencing players in a direction Frontier determines/changes from time to time. If they want to encourage exploration, for example, they could increase the value of, say, distance traveled, in the arx bucks equation. It's a tough line to draw between too much and not enough value being assigned to the arx buck. Of course, Frontier Bank could always devalue the arx...hehehe In the end, some people just care more about the cosmetic stuff than others.

    I think it is completely wrong that they don't already have a value. If the system is already there but different for a console. But will then be changing it to ARX. Then the only reason they don't have a number available is because they are looking into ways to increase their profit potential. ARX will cost X dollars/pounds/etc for X ARX. The cosmetics all already have a price point. Fair pricing you can work out roughly what an item will cost versus an estimated dollar per arx for the sums you can see in your clip. Everyone will get prices for ARX packs. The ARX packs will probably be slightly more, or slightly less than the amount you actually need to buy an item. Like buying 450 ARX for a 350 cost item, or needing 500 for another. This allows them to get players to buy more than they need while justifying the price. (Not the first game to do this and probably won't be the last.)

    As a console player, these are just rebranded Frontier Points with a far better UI and the ability to earn some in-game. PS4 and Xbox players will see nothing but good here unless prices go up. The PC cash shop prices were in line with console cosmetic pricing. I think the biggest change will be Fdev having a cleaner store interface and Sony/MS not getting a cut of the cosmetics income.

    • @markhackett2302
      @markhackett2302 5 лет назад +1

      It will probably come out to something like the prices currently, the only thing to fiddle would be the exchange rate for the arx in the gameplay. It could be that mission completion gives you an option to get Arx instead of Rep/Inf++++ or materials. It will likely be that doing CGs and IIs will make for more. Probably quite a lot more. But you will likely not get stuff for non-mission work or time played or gaining ranks. Making them a mission reward seems to be the best way to make normal everyday gameplay work.
      HOWEVER, the downside to that is that the T9 is kinda sucky for this, since its large cargo hold cannot be usefully used for trading missions, since they top out at about 230ish and you'll not find more than one going to the same location very often. So your arx earning is decidedly lower in the T9, and its potentiality wasted. If they make the wing mission trading smaller so that you could do it in just a handful of runs solo in a T9 then they could be better done. As it is, even if you wing up with all T9s, you can't do an average wing bulk order of 5000-7000 units in less than three runs. Cut it down to 600-1200 and you can wing up with one other large trader, or all go in Pythons and get it done in one go, two tops.

    • @ConfusedRaccoon
      @ConfusedRaccoon 5 лет назад

    Burning question: will prices for everything change?

    • @Flyingbrickyard
      @Flyingbrickyard 5 лет назад

      That's a given.
      The point of such systems is to make the costs even more abstract, so that you don't realize exactly how much cash you're giving up.
      Then couple that with prices which are designed to mismatch any combination of quantities in which the scrip can be purchased, and you've got a very effective way to squeeze even more money out of a customer.
      The end result is that the customer doesn't really know how much anything costs in real world money, and never has the right amount of scrip for a purchase (either not enough, in which case they purchase another oversized block, or they have too much, in which case they feel compelled to buy something else, so they don't 'waste the points' - which often results in needing to overbuy points again and the cycle continues).
      The entire point is to hide the actual price, then exploit the customer's perception of sunk costs to keep them paying.

  • @steffan147
    @steffan147 5 лет назад

    I welcome the idea. I imagine the amount you earn is going to be pitiful to try and persuade you spend real world dorrah on these things but, it'll be nice to just earn as you play. They promised to start a "NEW ERA", so this is it !
    1) They added "in-game currency" for cosmetics => Good: this will make the "decor" more accessible and will make players play more in "OPEN", for "show-off".
    2) They've added ships and reputation => Bad: everyone got a "Top ships" in no time and:
    a) "End content" is achieved - you can no longer play.
    b) Those who remain in game, will scatter on "SOLO" and "PRIVATE".
    In both cases, the sale of further content will not be so profitable for "Frontier".
    But the sale of ships - this is a minor problem, you CAN play with it.
    Much worse will be, if they say, that a "data retention" on servers, with player's "Estate" (planetary bases, mine silos and property of the Guilds (fleet carriers and mega-ships)) will cost ... "real money" for limited time period (like Star Citizen did). And this, is the "Pay to win".
    I have a bad feeling about this. This won't end well.

    I would not expect the earning rate to be worth a damn. You'll probably be able to afford a single paintjob for a single ship after 300 hours of grinding. More expensive items? You may be able to unlock ONE after playing for the next 3-4 years. Honestly, it sounds cosmetic sales trends have dropped off, as people are becoming more aware of the greedy and predatory nature of MTX. So after nickel-and-diming players for four years now, FDev is FINALLY making things earnable in-game, as a 'reward' for endless grinding with very little new content added.
    This is a gimmick to get people to keep putting in time to prop up their player time/numbers. They figure they've exhausted the whales, who have already bought everything, so there won't be anything for them to spend ARX on - but newer or infrequent players, who haven't been tapped yet, may earn some ARX and want something, and only have to buy a smaller pack of points (ARX) to unlock it. It's to trick people, like FO76, where you earn 'Atoms' very sparingly, so you want to spend them, but have to buy point packs to supplement the outrageous cost of items. And once you start buying some, you're more likely to buy more, and that's what they hope for. Throw money at them for cosmetic bullshit, when fucking color swaps should be free in game. *IF* we actually got substantial content added on a regular basis, like MTX were funding new content, there would be an argument for them. But how many 'new' weapons have been added, that use THE EXACT SAME UNALTERED MODELS? It's not new if it's just a text stat change.
    I was stupid and did buy a few cosmetic items before. And then I was like "Why the fuck am I buying into this MTX shit and supporting this 'nickel-and-dime' practice?". Though I would actually buy paintjob packs... if it would unlock that pack for EVERY ship. NOT JUST ONE SINGLE SHIP. Who is going to pay money for items that ONLY work for a Sidewinder? You use a Sidewinder for about 10 minutes before you get something better lol. Seriously though, you use it for your first day playing and then never go back to it. Unless you're a "hardcore" player that wants the "challenge" of doing something in a Sidewinder.

    It will be like every other publisher where say something cost 6 "whatever's". @@ltpunkrocket522 Yeah that's exactly what I'm worried about. Does ARX now replace the ability to purchase the things I want directly or are we now going to be forced to buy "packs" of ARX? Cos that is a money grabbing scheme that results in you always having just a few too many "coins" or not enough, which is a psychological trick to get you to spend more. If I can still purchase the cosmetics I want directly then I don't care but if ARX replaces that ability then this really is the top of a very slippery slope.
