  • Today I completed my regular daily self-training; however, it was not regular today. My dear friend Morgan Dilks passed away last Monday and the celebration of his life was held on Friday.
It was a great honor to be able to attend this here in Japan online. My wife and I were deeply moved by it.
Today's training, I dedicated to Morgan. He was here this time last week, so I dedicate this practice to him. We've done a lot together over the last 20 years. From time training in Steve Elers dojo, when Steve brought me up for a seminar; to my wife and I staying with him and Yuko at their home (before we were all parents) when I entered my final National competition; to his visits to my dojo here in Japan to do private training; to his travelling to Christchurch to train; to his hosting of my seminars in Palmerston North; to training in his garage. The list could, of course, go on and on.
My family and I have great gratitude to Morgan, Yuko, Yuri and Miya. God Bless you all, you are all greatly loved.
Lastly, my training today is just a training. But Morgan loved to train, so I trained with Morgan fully in my heart today. Also Yuko, Yuri and Miya.
I have to bow deeply as I feel so sad such a beautiful person has passed away. Nevertheless, his FAITH means we WILL meet again.
    André

I dedicated this practice to Morgan, as he always asked me about what I do each day in my self-training. He loved karate and always came to my seminars in New Zealand, and regularly came to my dojo for private training here in Japan. He even hosted seminars in Palmerston North. Furthermore, he also did socho-geiko with me, identical to which I experienced from Asai Sensei. Above all of this, he is a dear friend.
Just a few weeks ago we were looking forward to arranging a practice together and a family catch up (post Corona).
The love of people and friendship is such a wonderful thing. Let's all be kind and appreciate each other! Morgan was such a man who exemplified these traits.

Thanks so much for the comments. Some have asked what kata I was doing at the end. The first was HYAKUHAPPO the second, as stated in the video, was Meikyo Sandan. The IKS version of Meikyo Sandan is completely different from all others and it is the original. It will be taught at a future course, along with its history, and most importantly it self-defense applications.

The hardness and softness is a very important point. You can see it in some Karate, but many concentrate on strength and hardness. When you see a Karateka practice this principle it separates him/her from the rest.

Great stances and dynamics, though it's sort of a needless comment, as all of us can see that Andre is a top-notch practitioner, I think.
His kiba dachi, however, is a form of art in itself 🙂.

When in a real fight with a robber, your belt has no credit. It how you deal with the situation that counts. Life and death is even more challenging.
I was rob with a Chinese Chopper to my neck... and all the karate I know know was gone when I felt the sharp edge of that Chopper. 😔 But I still 💙💜 and practice karate.... Oss!!!
