£35125 for VZ2 (entry level) or £36760 for VZ3 as tested vs £37380 CS, like the Golf 5 door and DSG 7 speed are only configuration available
Same 300 PS and 400 nm torque
5.7 secs to 60, 0.1 slower than CS due to being 29kg heavier
Front wheel drive with VAQ front differential
370mm brake discs from Brembo (Clubsport are 357mm)
DCC is standard - a £785 option on Golf
19s are standard - £800 ish on Golf
In this video which trials a quicker way of me reviewing cars, I test drive the new Cupra Leon 300 in VZ3 spec, which on paper at least, is a match for my Mk8 Golf GTI Clubsport.

Oh and yes I do love the wheels but I gather from Instagram they are very marmite, wouldn't it be boring if we all liked the same things ;)

I honestly would prefer the Cupra on exclusivity alone. I also think it looks pretty crackin'.
Glad Cupra let you test this Andrew. Think overall, given the better spec, imo better looks, and the stretched platform, this would be my choice. And it all comes in under the luxury car road tax which a similar spec CS wouldn't. Enjoyed your short review

Great video again, I have to say the GTI badge and the heritage that brings is a lot to get over, but considering the price difference spec for spec I think you have to Cupra
I wish we could get this in the U.S. I would prefer this over the Golf 8.

Lots of pressure to film this within an hour and somehow lense got dirty and I didn't notice. It was resolved by the time I filmed the Arteon shooting brake an hour later but too late for this one. I'm OCD about clean lense but as I said the pressure was on.

It’s certainly grown on me since the first time I saw this shape.
Not too sure about the overall styling of the Cupra and in particular the front end, but good value spec for spec and would consider over a CS8 as front end on the mk8 golfs also a bit of an acquired taste. . . .
What do you mean by 'speccing' the different steering wheel? There's no option to do so, the trim levels are set
Not a fan of the new look Leon - it's lost a lot of the aggressive edginess of the Mk3/5F, especially the later facelifted ones.
I'm a life-long Golf fan, and it pains me to say i like the looks of this over the Mk8.

I’m looking at the hybrid version of this Cupra for my next car. I currently have a 2019 Leon Cupra & love it. Not 100% sold on these wheels though I think the 5 spoke is better on the entry level Leon Cupra hybrid. To busy & to much metal going on with those for me. The hybrid will work better for me as it will be a daily & business car & my 290 is a little thirsty.
The hybrid is not a real cupra. A 1.4tfsi? Just baad
@@evaristocorripio5434 If you’re buying your Cupra for track days then 100% yes. I’ll probably keep my 2019 Cupra 290 for track days & get the hybrid for my new daily. I’ll be ordering my new car for March 2023 delivery so a little way to go yet.

I wanted one of these but I business lease the cars and the price on these was nuts per month I ended up ordering the golf

Yep TCR sold and I’m now running a Mk8 Clubsport which is the effective TCR replacement
Got the VZ3 spec a month ago. Great car, prefer to current golf, mainly cos looks better and spec. Would recommend vz2 though as have the same 19inch wheels which I have already curbed… on a drop curb. Wheels on vz2 are less low profile and only other real difference is fabric seats.
I went for the VZ2, thing i'm most worried about is not having the button on the wheel. Would you say its a headache changing driving modes while on the go on the screen? Sometimes you need a quick change to show somone who's boss ;)
@@leefoster8015 yep agree lol.Infotainment system is a bit of a nightmare, but same with all new VW group. My screen is slow and crashes. Booked into my local garage to sort this week I hope 🤞
@@neijon01 Yeah VW really messed up with this by sounds of it. Still doesn't put me off buying the car though. I've not taken delivery yet so hopefully firmware is all thats required.
Didn’t go for the 300 but got the 245 VZ1 ‘in transit’ I can’t wait 😅
They are incredibly cheap on contract hire! The lack of DCC is what put me off it though!

On the vz3 they are, in a choice of blue or black I believe

What's your opinion on this vs Octavia vRS?
I've done a review of the Octavia VRS, I don't like the angle of the infotainment screen and home button left as it's clearly left hand drive positioning which for RHD here is poor. 245 PS Octavia is not half as sporty as the Cupra with 300 PS, it's a bigger, softer car, very different. Leon has good rear legroom and a decent boot but Skoda boot is much bigger and the only reason to buy it over the Cupra.

The Cupra has always represented the best bang for the buck out of the MQB hot hatches (not including the RS3 in that) but probably the Golf's are the sweet spot in terms of an overall package.
If someone can explain what that "darth vader" noise is I'd love an explanation, my tuned 116i does it and boy it sounds crazyyy
It’s induction noise. The car sucking in air in other words.
@@couldntthinkofmyname Well I knew that, but many cars don't do it. My 116 is completely stock intake, just notice it happens a lot more in these smaller engines.
I have driven gti 245 KM and 300 KM cupra leon. Must say gti gives me a bit more fun. Also don't like cupra looks but the interior... different story (looks and feels better than VW)
Did Cupra say you could spec the extra steering wheel buttons? I'm messing about on the configurator and unable to find them. Was under the impression it was something we were denied in the RHD version :(

I'd like to see you review the BMW 128ti, as that's a car that seems to have the GTi well in it's sights too - not a particular BMW fan, but I'd certainly consider one. I remember you did a "135 Msport v S3" a while ago

Can you actually spec the buttons on the Wheel? I didn’t think it was an option for the hatchback. And I didn’t think we were getting brembo brakes in the uk. I have a 2018 Leon cupra and would like to change but I can get a mk8 Golf R cheaper than the cupra once I go through car discount websites. Obviously not like for like spec but gives you something to think about
On this page there is a press release which says 370mm Brembo with no conditions (it's a UK Cupra website) and the pic of the steering wheel in the video is from a UK RHD car so it is available as an option here (I talked at great length about this with the chap from Cupra as was surprised the 'famous' TC off button wasn't there as it was in the LHD car that had done the rounds recently)

@@volkswizard looks like you right, thanks for the extra information Andrew and I apologise. It seems Cupra have changed the Base spec and options for the Cupra since it’s release earlier this year. I suspect it’s due to poor uptake and the way that other territories were able to get things we couldn’t here in the uk. Love the videos, keep up the hard work
I have ordered one for December, I was told the steering wheel is only for the formentor in the UK market not the Leon. It was the same story with the brakes. There are already some VZ3 models on Auto Trader which don’t have the steering wheel or the brakes.
@@adamstewart6818 seemingly they have changed the options and base spec. When did you order if you don’t mind me asking. More colour options are now available on the configurator like matte petrol blue for example
@@chris8952 placed my ordered the car a month ago for a built ready for december delivery as my current Cupra lease ends then. I was aware of a model year change from my local Cupra dealer but this was extremely minor items like paint and trim on cars lower in the range. It appears only the colour changes on the website nothing else. Dont get me wrong id love the brembos as standard but not sure thats the case, it was a pack on the old car for a while.
The steering wheel appears on the estate version of the vz3 310 tested by piston heads

Front looks like Mazda 3, rear looks like a Vauxhall Astra, not great imo, and the wheels are awful.

Hello Andrew I know your a Golf GTI die hard but you have to admit this cupra Leon 300 is a bit better value than your CS. The cupra isn't the best looking design(it's a bit under whelming imo)but it certainly shifts, for the money your paying for the GTI CS badge .
Look at discounts and residual value and you'll see the Golf's total cost of ownership isn't that different and it exudes so much more class I'd pay extra for that anyway.
@@volkswizard Andrew discounts and residual values don't make much difference these days everyone buys new cars with PCPs or lease deals then when they're finished they just trade up to the next thing that's flavour of the month, the old fashioned ways are fast becoming extinct.

Herbert Diess said he wants Cupra to be positioned above Volkswagen as a more emotional premium brand. They split the Cupra brand from SEAT because SEAT is rejected from some markets like France and Italy because the people are “image sensitive” (badge snobs) so Cupra has been given a chance of long-term survival but SEAT however, well it’s future is dicey and might not survive in the long-term. Cupra is now being sent abroad to Australia and America for the first time!

Yes but not the versions that are coming to the UK , I think you can only spec this option on the US and Europe versions which is awful

I really dislike the Mk8, it look like a Golf but it looks like a cheap knock off one. Definitely not as solid as the MK6 and 7

That is the question and that will affect the finance monthly payments. I guess if you got a finance quote of the website, the GFV would reveal all.

Not a fan of the looks tbh. I think the 7.5 Golf is just a cleaner & more pleasing shape. Even the mirrors have so many angles on the Leon.🤷🏼♂️
Old Leon was better too, this one should be compared to Mk8 Golf and in that case it's not such a bad design.
Another great video Andrew! Does the Cupra Leon have the fake engine noise pumped into the cabin, or did you turn it off? My Cupra Formentor has a lovely 5 cylinder noise pumped in, which is annoying due to it being a 4 cylinder!
Stand alone the Cupra looks decent and it does sound like you want a sporty hatchback to sound but its really just not in the same league as the VW. I would take the Pepsi challenge on the Golf any day.
Pretty sure that's the soundaktor synthetic sound, turn that off and it sounds like any old 2.0 TSI

i have shotlisted the focus st, i30 n dct & leon 300 for my next car and i am going for the leon… i saw steve track test the i30 n dct and it was not as fast as the leon

A lot of car for not a lot of money, like it. These cars especially the Cupra have gone through the roof over the last 6 months.
Interiors very nice but I think it would fly under the radar too much for me personally...
Think that's what owners of these may like. Get too much of the wrong kind of attention in fast Golfs sometimes.

Would love for you to give the Formentor a drive and hear you opinion about the car as I went for it over the GTI, but still miss what the badge GTI represents.
I originally ordered a GTI CS but due to trouble with the manufacturing (they moved the delivery from july to december) I cancelled my ordered and got an offer on a 310hp formentor that came with 20% discount and will be delivered within 3 months so it was a logical choice...
It’s a shame, because the UK spec loses most of the good features, you can only get steering wheel buttons in the ST, no decent wheels, no side skirts, no carbon spoiler. But overall I like the new cupra but I think the boot and rear lights look awful and cheap
That looks like a vauxhall astra. Would have to be £10k cheaper, 0% & cashback to even potentially consider over a clubsport. Not in a million years😫
I'm hoping the styling grows on me in time for my mk3 going away as I'd like to stick with a Cupra. I'm a bit old fashioned regarding tech though and that infotainment system will do my head

I wanted to order curpa leon kombi with 4drive with a good rebate about a week ago. Residual values for 3 year old leon cupras are currently 30-40% below msrp. Thats way better than what comparable regular golf 7.5 gti's are doing right now (which are usually around 50% below msrp after 3 years). In this post corona market residual values of certain performance cars have gone up quite a bit though. More usual cars like the gti did not do as well.
I honestly don't know why vag is cheaping out on certain parts on their cars: the cheap centre console, glovebox, greyish aero plastics on the outside, doorpanels etc. Especially no double glazed glass and less general sound proofing is a deal killer to me. Ill stick with my mk7 gti for another year to see if better options come along. Already did 110k km in the last 5 years on it without a single issue
A good quick review thanks... Understated looks are no good when you pay a lot of money... a performance version of a range should 'look' like it goes...perhaps with a low key body kit... I have a 2017.. 300 and my neighbours think it's a basic Leon !

It's subjective as ever when it comes to looks, I don't think front and back match on Leon but on Golf it's consistent.
Better looking than the new Golf. When I first see the Seat I liked it, can’t say the same for the Golf just don’t like it. Think VW are going a bit too safe on the cars with the styling, I know people like a practical car but the hot versions should look mean! That’s why we buy hot hatches.
I have a MK2 Seat Ibiza GTI and this still looks cool and puts a smile on my face over my S3 daily. Seat are a cracking brand and totally dismissed like Skoda was.

I love it apart from the plastic fake intakes on the front end and the VZ3 wheels.
Got the old leon cupra and absaloutely love it ! But this new one the wheels are gross its ugly and needed a touch more power than previous really ! Wont be upgrading to this for sure
It may be 3k cheaper, but it will likely depreciate faster

@@volkswizard 13k ish on a 4year but they always load the front end to give you enough of a deposit for the next one. Should be worth 18-20k in 4 years would be my estimate wont be drastically different from the Golf. Lots of reasoning behind that but in short VAG are throwing a lot of weight behind this brand.

I think all of your videos are very informative, well put together and professional - however, I can't help but think you could really benefit from a better camera. I think an upgrade in video quality (that isn't hazy or washed out) could really improve the viewing experience. Other than that keep it up!! :)
