    In this video I share with you with no sugar coating, the highs and lows of living with my Mk8 Golf GTI Clubsport. I would rather make positive videos than focus on the negatives but a key distinguisher of this channel over others, is telling it as it is.
    I should point out I still love this car, if I didn't I could reject it or sell it for profit but I have no plans for either. I have zero issues with the buttonless user interface which works perfectly and is not long, it's so good that I prefer it over the now dated looking 7 & 7.5, call me weird if you must :)
    However it is worrying when my car has a blatant issue that could be seen as dangerous yet VW say "no applicable fix". This is probably something to do with fact they only affect right hand drive cars so of minor concern to VW (even though we have been the second biggest market outside of Germany for hot Golfs)

      Have to agree the Mk 7.5 (currently have a GTD) seems to be the sweet spot with the Mk 8 seeming to be changes for changes sake, particularly on the internals with the loss of the gear selector on DSG's and physical climate controls rather touch screen.

The whole point of having a GTI is the wonderful way the car responds to driver input, isn’t some of that lost with electronic assistance and overrides? Only my opinion and I’m sure the mk8 is fabulous to drive, probably would have one if mine packed up, looks great.

    The travel assist malfunction is caused by a bug in the map software lisenced by another company.
    If the road you're on is close to another road with a different speed limit, the car will always choose the lowest speed limit.
    I've experienced it several times in Id3 and 4, and an Enyaq, and it's always at the exact same locations.
    The bug has been there since the road sign detector was introduced way back, but it wasn't a problem because travel assist wasn't a thing yet.

Eg the view selected in the driver’s panel - the GTI kept resetting to default, the cupra holds whatever I select no matter how many times I restart the car. CarPlay in the cupra has poorer resolution but much fewer glitches connecting to my phones - just two of the many things I noticed working smoother.

    Very informative as always. I've now got rid of my Mk8, worst car I've ever had. So, so many problems I won't list them all but one that nearly caused a major accident was with ACC activated on my local dual carriageway 70mph busy with both lanes full of traffic then I was going through a road works area that had finished the day before and they had left some equipment and a 40mph sign on the side of the road in a layby. My car picked the 40mph sign up while doing 70mph in the outside lane and litterally slammed on nearly causing a major accident. Fortunately I released what was happening quickly tried to speed back up through it but was a proper shock to the system I can tell you!

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  3 года назад +1

      That's not good Rog! VW could have just as easily not given TSR but we are guinea pigs for self-driving cars and this stuff is essential if they are going to ever work properly. There is still clearly a lot of work to be done, not least in standardising road signs so there is less confusion when the system reads them. I was also sent a technical document which listed all the areas where TSR can get confused and there are quite a lot of situations, none of which the system can ever overcome, however well developed it is. On top of all this we could do without the kph/mph confusion which most definitely can be sorted by some proper software.

    That problem with the car not "undertaking" vehicles in the lane to your left can be easily fixed/adjusted in the software using an OBDELEVEN or similar. I found the setting on my S3 because I was annoyed that it wouldn't "undertake" vehicles in the lane to my right, which is allowed on a motorway in my country, even though we also drive on the left.

  • @jinglebells323
    @jinglebells323 3 года назад +2

    Interesting video but I must comment on some things: (1) Please don't use the word "undertake". It really doesn't mean what you think it means. You are meaning "overtake on the left" as used in Highway Code rule 268 (and other overtaking rules). (The Highway Code doesn't say "undertake".) The "over" bit of overtake refers to moving from behind someone to in front of them, usually by speeding up whilst they stay at the same speed. It's still "over"take which ever side you do it. Undertake, if it existed, would be to go from "in front" of someone to "behind" them, by slowing yourself down whilst they stayed at the same speed. This does happen for example in moving photo shoots on TV programs like Top Gear, where the camera car and the subject car are frequently speeding up and slowing down to capture all angles. (2) With used car prices high (due to the chip supply problem on new cars) it is indeed a good time to sell, but it's not a good time to buy; the depreciation will catch up with you sooner or later; so to sell your nearly-new Golf just because it's worth more now than when you bought it is financially crazy if you immediately buy another (more expensive) one. (3) Software problems such as you describe are pretty worrying as we move into increasing control of cars by software. One day we will realise that software isn't reliable enough yet! Why would anyone want a car with so much electronics, and those awful tiny pictures on the dashboard. Whilst I love to read about such things, actually buying and owning in the way you are doing .. well, you are on a different planet; a 10 year old Golf can give you just as much pleasure and driving enjoyment, for a lot less.

  • @mihaiserbanescu8676
    @mihaiserbanescu8676 3 года назад +1

    you should see if there are any settings in the software that relates to km/h or mph. There might be more modules that may work together. for example, the speedometer and GPS might be set on different values and somehow it confuses the system. The system that reads the signs might work with a GPS module or within the infotainment. Software ties everything together and sometimes bugs like these can happen. I have a laptop that sometimes loses the calibration for the touchpad. It also has a sensor that reads where my eyes are looking on the screen, by enabling that sensor, it regains the touchpad calibration then it can be turned off again and everything is fine. That took a long time to figure out, so check everything, sometimes there are modules that are unrelated but affect other systems of the car.

      Sorry to hear about all the issues you're having. All this technology sounds a bit of a nightmare, there are so many potential points of failure and it doesn't sound like it is being tested enough before being released to the public. In my opinion having no physical buttons for HVAC and other critical functions is dangerous and should not be allowed. VW see this as cost cutting of course; far cheaper to make everything "work" off a screen rather than develop and produce physical buttons at extra cost (even though it is much safer!). Also, look how many problems your cars are having and they are brand new - imagine 5 or 10 years down the line when this car is out of warranty and they no longer provide software updates - trying to debug and resolve software problems is going to be a nightmare! Main dealers won't want to be interested in the older cars, but traditional specialists might not be able to diagnose and fix due to the complexity of the software.

I am sure back in the day of analogue instrument clusters, UK cars had separate hardware but the modern digital era means hardware is common across the whole build and it's only the software's configuration that distinguises a UK car from a German one. Funny thing is Mk7.5 with the first digital cluster was fine so unclear why Mk8 is suffering these glitches.

    Speaking of dangerous faults with so called “high tech safety”… I wrote to VW about one on my 7.5 Golf R (In California). The emergency braking feature which warns of an imminent collision, also actually performs an emergency brake for you! It literally slams the brakes on. Well it bothered me when the light would go on and it would blare its noise in traffic occasionally, and even less occasionally would actually slam the brakes, although almost always for some reason at slow speeds so it did not present too much of a problem except for annoyance. HOWEVER, I was driving on a great curvy mountain road once and took a steep left turn which just happened to have a large redwood tree planted right at the point of turn. Well the car SLAMMED the brakes on at about 30 miles an hour in the middle of the flowing road. It absolutely shocked me, caused a major scare, but luckily did not cause what would have certainly been a terrible accident with any car behind me, because there was no one trailing me. It was a complete failure of the auto system and would have CAUSED a bad accident (I could imagine a car rear ending me and slamming me into that very tree head on!). I immediately turned off this system (which thankfully can be disabled) and wrote to VW about it. Never heard from them, but it is an example of the perils of these so called advanced safety features.

    Serious number of issues with the mk8 it would appear?

      I don't mind issues but the car is now 9 month sold (built Oct 2020) so when it goes it for a software update, I expect it to come back tip top. No coincidence the two major issues are RHD/UK market only, you can imagine the priority they've given to fixing those...

    Why do VW struggle so much with interior creaks and rattles?! I’ve been in a few Golfs and they’ve all been rattly inside. 1 had a vibrating dash when pulling away too. I’m looking to buy a Seat Leon FR soon (2017-18) and it’s putting me off a bit

    My golf R performance only has one of the issues noted and it’s really not much of an issue. It does do the undertaking thing even when on the right side of the car, but it stops after you accelerate past the vehicle so only does it once. Everything else is tip top, software isn’t slow, quite the opposite in fact and the car is absolutely the ‘shit’ round a corner and in most walks of life. It’s probably not quite the sense of occasion as my previous 2017 RS3 but then it’s nearly £15k cheaper

    Honestly I laugh at people who willingly give a lot of money to a company to be the QC of a company.. I thought the same for all the rich fools who bought Tecla's for 50k.. seriously do not understand why this still happens.. why it is acceptable, and why people go back and repeat this behaviour...

    The tyres are only going to last 10,000 miles? WTF? I've got 4 Michelin Cross Climates on my A4 quattro, they have done 60k. Still have 3 mm across 75%. Michelin is the ONLY serious option for tyres.
    The slowing down along side lorries makes a lot of sense to me now. I have been wondering why do people just pull alongside, or just hover on my trailer's rear quarter, it must be their computers. It is pretty dangerous to just slow down next to a lorry. We see you coming up, you are going past, and thats when Im pulling out to overtake the twat in the FAST car doing 50 in lane 1, but to then have the car thats going past me, just stop going past is going to end up with someone getting wiped out. Car drivers need to just get the fuck past a truck, and do it quickly, and keep going. If you are overtaken by a truck YOU are the congestion.

    1.Are you not still within the consumer protection act, you can just reject the car and have your money back?
    2. Sell your car for a profit, and order the new 1 with out these non working options? You might not be able to have these options anyway, due to the chip shortage?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  3 года назад

      1) Probably but I don't want to give it up because I quite like it. The good bits are good all the time, the bad bits are just intermittent
      2) There is no guarantee when a new one comes it will be any better and not having the options isn't the solution - VW need to fix these issues even if it means a hardware swap, there is a fix out there but it's almost like they don't believe us Brits and we are misunderstanding the limitations of the system which are indeed many and varied but DO NOT include kph/mph miscalculations!

    Diesel scandal was a big financial loss for VW. Quality has gone downhill with VW.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  3 года назад +2

      They did the crime and we are doing the time, not just with quality of vehicles, but parts prices that have gone up massively and can only be purchased directly from VWG in most cases and the removal of any goodwill repairs to those just out of warranty as well as trying to wriggle out of as many warranty claims as possible following instruction from up top. It's a shame especially as other manufacturers unburdened with this **** are able to produce competitive products and offer better warranties than VW ever did.
