  • Sorry for the wait, and I know it's inopportune to post this right before the Master Chief Collection comes out, so I hope you'll forgive me.
    Halo: Broken Circle is an amazing book! Delving into the history of the Covenant an introducing tons of new, and well-written, characters. From the founding of the Covenant to the Great Schism, this book is a must read!
    Apologies in advance for the dry delivery.

    I always just rationalize the covenant nicknames being the same as the human designations is just a result of the covenant language being translated into our human language.

    I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually have respect for some of the San' Shyumm now! Mken and Zo are among the few decent San Shyumm who saw through the Covenant from the start! And I flippin LOVED Ussa and Bal'Tol Xellus! I wonder if any of this is going to be incorporated into the games lore. Might be content for the terminals in Halo 5. Really enjoyed this book and the characters and plot were solid. Good job John Shirley!

      Yeah, what about those Warrior San Shyumm that rejected the Forerunner technology, that were great warriors, and were able to take on several elites and win.
      The chairbound San Shyumm were the San Shyumm that fought the Sanghelli in the war that formed the Covenant, and of course could do jack shit against elites.

    As opposed to having Plasma weaponry, it would have been more fitting if the old Sangheili had early versions of Needlers, Needle Rifles, and Carbines.

    Note: Spoilers ahead!!!
    I just finished reading it myself. I agree with your input on the coincidence of covenant naming vs human naming. It probably was a liberty from the author to show people who perhaps mainly played the games and didn't know the species' actual names.
    Overall, I agree it was a great read.
    My only real qualm with the book is that it doesn't really reveal the fate of Janjur Quom. It is previously stated by the San Shyuum that it was destroyed when its star went supernova in, I believe, Halo Encyclopedia. It then speculates that they could have been lying about said-destruction of Janjur Quom because they were distrustful of the Sangheili, then further speculates that if its destruction is a lie, it would be hard to maintain said-lie for thousands of years.
    I think it is hinted in the first half of Broken Circle (ie. 850 BC) that San Shyuum scientists speculated that the star of the San Shyuum's home system is nearing going supernova. Near the end of the book (ie. 2553), it is stated by Prophet of Clarity, Zo Resken, that he may be the only San Shyuum left, after High Charity's destruction. Him thinking he may be the only San Shyuum left, may hint further of JanJur Quom's destruction.
    I just kind of wish they confirmed it, and perhaps looked into a possible conspiracy theory of whether Janjur Quom was truly destroyed.
    Anyways, overall, it was a great read.

    • @HaloCanon
      @HaloCanon  9 лет назад +4

      I agree, a confirmation would have been nice. I do think that whole bit about Janjur Qom's sun being unstable is meant to give credence to the story of it exploding, though.

    • @IamCanadian3333
      @IamCanadian3333 9 лет назад +6

      Halo Canon I did like though the reference to The Forerunner Saga, aka the legend of the Forerunners "punishing" the San 'Shyuum by wiping out most life on Janjar Quom for defying the "gods" (aka Master Builder firing a Halo ring on the planet to supress a San 'Shyuum rebellion).

    • @HaloCanon
      @HaloCanon  8 лет назад +1

      Opinions vary. For me, Mortal Dictata was the worst Halo novel, bar-none. For others, it was the best of the Kilo-5 trilogy.

  • @HaloCanon
    @HaloCanon  9 лет назад +17

    @Lamont Hammonds: The book seems to indicate that the "Miasmic Giants" were space-faring, so I highly doubt it was the Brutes. Given the meaning of the work Miasmic, my first though were the hunters, but in the end it could be nothing more than a new species.
    I doubt the Sharquoi are the Precursors. Rather, just a part of this new "Covenant Fringe" that was introduced recently.

    I feel like if the unidentified aliens were the "miasmic giants" that the system was named after, then creka would refer to them as "the miasmic giants" or "the giants of the so and so system". I feel like they just happened to be in that system at the time and from the looks of it, the elites had no idea who, or what they were.
    Also, I found it interesting that they weren't too far off from a forerunner shield world. Perhaps a short jump away. Kinda reminds me of the terminal 5 species being suspiciously near installation 04.

      Halo Canon I think one of the books had John and other Spartan 2's discussing the "elites" that they had learned about from covenant battle net chatter, though they hadn't actually encountered the species yet themselves. So I think we at least got the Sangheili nickname from the covenant.

    The burn blade is something I found very interesting in the book as I couldn't really imagine it as shaped like an energy sword, the way some of the Sangheili were described as holding it and how it rested on the hip didn't seem to fit with the shape of the energy sword. Because of this I always imagined the burn blade as looking similar to the Egyptian khopesh, just sized up a bit and with a differently shaped hilt to fit the inhuman shape of Sangheili hands.

    In reference the "The system of Miasmic Giants". The word Miasmic means "of a repulsive or repugnant smell." Is there a species in the current canon that classifies? Brutes maybe? And great call on the Sharquoi (or however you spell it). Sometimes I forget they existed. And would there be any possible way these giants could be the Precursors? Although they were hunted to extinction by the Forerunners, they were a tier 0 civilization, capable of travel on an intergalactic scale? Seeming that bugs do sometimes produce bad odor, and precursors were closest to what we call bugs.

    Lol, I had such a different headcannon origin story where the "Covenant" was simply that - a pact between sanshyuum & sangheili. But the 3 prophets & this militant arm they fought control over was just an arm of a greater forerunner religious organization & later on we'd confront the "pope" of this religious faction the covenant was apart of.

    Skipped to the rating in order to avoid spoilers (Sorry). I heard about Broken Circle but after not finishing Thursday War I was unsure about buying another one. I'll give it a look though... I definitely need to be reading novels more anyway.

    • @HaloCanon
      @HaloCanon  9 лет назад +5

      The Forerunner Trilogy is a definite must, in my opinion, and Broken Circle is a prefect place to jump back into the Halo books. Kilo-5 is skippable, I think. Halopedia might be the better option there.

    • @KeeperofthePeace
      @KeeperofthePeace 9 лет назад

      First two of Kilo-5 are pretty good, in my opinion, but I have a massive bias (that would be name if they ever made me into a Contender) towards anything Halo, so my vision may be a bit colored. That being said...avoid Mortal Dictata as if it were a plague ship filled with Black Death infested rats.
      I also think the Forerunner Trilogy was very enjoyable. I too had/have a Halopedia addiction but you'll have forgotten a significant portion of what you know by the time you read them that it will still be surprising and entertaining. Even if you don't have the memory of a goldfish like me, its still really great to read a book from the perspective of people like the Librarian and both the Ur and Iso-Didacts as they attempt to defeat the Flood, eventually being forced to resort to using the Halo array. Greg Bear is a fine author. No rage-inducing segments will be found within them.

    Perhaps i like the kilo 5 books due to audio books? Its really awsome most books can be found on RUclips. I higly recommend the broken circle Read by Scott Brick. Rock on!

    Now this book was a good read compared to the Kilo 5 trilogy. Those books were awful.
