Ableton Live for Guitarists - Part 1: Recording Guitars Through Pedal Effects

- Ableton Live is a useful tool for recording and looping your guitar, in this first of four lessons, we take you through how to set up your guitar and effects pedals with Ableton Live.
A nice tip is to set the length of the clip you're recording in to a fixed length, f.i. 4 bars. You do this by double clicking on the clip, or, when the audio track is selected, pressing Shift + Tab. On the bottom you can see a panel where you can change this. This way you don't have to stop the recording manually.

THANK YOU!!! This is a rudimentary thing people should be told right off. Funny how people in thes "for beginners" videos assume you already know how to use it.
How about playback? I can't seem to tell Ableton when the song is over, and it doesn't mark when you stop recording. The play needle keeps going into infinity.
For some reason I can't get my own tip to work anymore... Double-clicking an audio clip isn't working, and since it's not possible to overdub an audio clip, editing the clip length of an existing clip isn't helpful either. I own a Push so it's not a big problem for me personally (you can set fixed length for audio clips in Push very easily), but I do like to know why it's not working anymore... Can't find anything on the web about this as well... Anyone?

Video isn't completely useless but he is doing that same thing - expecting you to already know stuff; in an instruction video. What would be the point.

I feel like I've tried everything. And for whatever reason, I can't get my sound to sound the same coming out, as it did going in. Playing live through Ableton wounds great. Playing it back, it sounds super muddy, tinny, lofi, and just crap. I really don't know what I'm doing wrong.
First thing you need to do is switch it to track view so you can see what you are doing with your song, this can be done by clicking on the top right where the 3 lines are, that way you will be using it like a traditional recording programme and might make better sense for song writers instead of recording short clips.

Good lord another video of someone recording themselves from two different views as if I am the wall they're speaking to. Who ever thought this was a good idea should be slapped.
You don't even make sensee. He has a single view - the camera looking at him (the rest is the screen and cut-ins of his guitar/pedal). This is almost as old a setup as cinema itself. Not to mention this all has nothing to do with the content of the video...

Hmm, clean guitar is one thing, getting your recording to sound good using any kind of overdrive/distortion pedals is yet another. How do I get my OD/Distortion to sound good without using a cab simulator and without using a DI box
Thats tough bro, I recorded some songs without a cab or amp app the guitars were to thin/flat then I found amplitude 4 for free and I swear by it they also have cheap upgrades so u can find a more specific sound
Check out the "LePou" VST for great free hi-gain amp plugins, but they require an IR plugin (Impulse Response - ie: Cab simulator) after the plugin to make them sound good. I find a classic Marshall cab sounds best for me. This is all done in software, and while I use an outboard DI to colour my sound a touch, plugin in to my MOTU M2 directly works great too. Also be sure to put a compressor upfront in your chain, something with fairly fast response and attack, ratio of 2:1 up to 4:1 depending on taste/style of music.

I wonder if he didn't have the compression pedal if he could just use Ableton to compress the sound? That's what I do on a lot of my audio sources.... Anyone in the world - feel free to correct me if this is not a good practice ? I'm trying to learn things....

Agreed. I use Live 10 & after years of trying to get good tone with it like this I decided to get an amp. Amp is first prize. If you got dollars then a hardware emulator like axe fx or kemper etc. But dry like this... it never works. Thin a all hell.

@@noprob250 I have not used GR for a good few years. So I cannot comment. But for real though. Having an amp just knocks. I'm not sure you can really mimic that. I also find the music of bands who use emulations pretty sterile. Periphery for instance... their stuff is mind boggling no doubt. They have skill. But I stop enjoying it after a while. I kind of feel the whole emulation route is a worthy resource for guitarists who cannot say use an amp in a flat or who want to track guitars easily between band mates in remote locations etc. Still... mic+guitar+amp... just feels right. No hate.
@@noprob250 I also think it depends on what you are doing. If the song works with GR then by all means keep using it.
I'm sorry, but this video is far from being helpful to me. In my view a lot of things that are self-explanatory, while important information is being ignored right from the start. I don't need to know that I have to turn on the metronome for recording. What I do need to know is why I my analoge effects won't work in front of my audfio interface. As soon as I connect them I have no signal anymore. It is not as easy as presented here. In addition I want to add that it might be a good idea to use effects that most guitarist use, instead of high end boutique stuff for 500 bucks upwards... Because after the problem with external effects and their implementation is fixed, I still need to know how to get a good basic sound (with effects turned off). I need to know about plugin- amps and their pros and cons. Because honestly, the sound is just as bad in the video as it is in my first attempts at recording. Further it would be useful to know about how to lower latency... etc etc.

That guitar sounds terrible! Guy should insert an amp and cabinet on the track.
That tone you got in this video SUCKS. And the sound is playing both the processed signal (tru Ableton) and the unprocessed signal (tru monitoring directly from your interface). You should turn off monitoring in your interface hardware or software to get rid of this double signal that makes your tone horrible like that!

Anyone know why my interface is getting a guitar signal but not Ableton? Ableton is not picking up any sound from my input, I've configured the settings and armed the track. Do not know what else to do.

@@girlsrockharder HEY YES, so it turns out I had to go to my security settings and enable Ableton to use my audio. The Mac security blocked the program receiving audio signals.

What's the model of the guitar he's using?
I would first hit the TAB key and start viewing in session view, which is a bit more familiar to guitarists. The clip view is great for performances and loop based music, but session view is more like a regular DAW that alot of people would sit more comfortably in.
I think you meant Arrangement View, because this video is entirely in Session View
Ah yes, thanks for that correction.
Well the Arrangement view might be more familiar, but the Session View is the unique aspect of Ableton which makes jamming and transferring ideas into a track so intuitive, making it a nice starting point in the Ableton workflow.

That input sounds a bit toooo hot!
A signal being too hot means it's pushing up against 0db creating unwanted distortion. That doesn't appear to be the case here. He's adding distortion with the pedal, which is always a subjective thing.
You guys in the comments are a bunch of squares. He's not trying to show you how to make your shit sound good; that's up to you to figure out. He's showing you how start recording guitar using ableton.

I get a lot of latency listening to myself play when I do this with my audio interface. does he have another cable from his audio Fuse phone jack to monitors ?
You just really have to make sure you've selected your interface as your input in preferences and that should fix your problem!!
What happens with this , I got no idea and the guitar sounds was so bad.🙈

Check out Kevin Parker (Tame Impala).
The instructor needed to show the sound of the amp heads also using the ableton cab simulation ....always use an Impulse Response for playing through a interface using these virtual amp heads, or you will get that thin and brittle DI guitar sound like in the video.
pgdantas can you explain to me what an impulse response is?? Would be greatly appreciated
impulse response = cabinet simulation, some plugin that simulates speakers to make it sound more realistic and not so "generic or sterile"
Kaisui what are some good examples of these plugins?
in ableton it's the cabinet plugin, it's in ableton live suite

is it possible to record guitar thru pedals thru an hi-z input?
I have Ableton Live 10 Lite and did just what it says here in the vid. I can hear what I play through my Focusrite interface and headphones but when I click on record, it's not recording what I play, what am I doing wrong? I know it's something simple, almost always is.

See at 1:57 at the bottom of "3 audio" column he's on, that small square box is red. You have to click on that to make it red, it means you're ready to record. I think the metronome turns on then when you click on the metronome. I think you can check off a metronome setting so that it turns on whenever you click on it though, don't know yet. I've figured out a few things and keep working with this but I think I'll check out Reaper also.

Would there happen to be a way i could use amp sims with the Ableton Lite software? I tried downloading Ableton's amp sims but the version i have will not allow that (I understand that i' need to get the full version of ableton for that, just looking for something that will do for now.) Does anyone have any leads?

Wow, not sure if I really learned all that much, this video seems more concerned with production quality than useful recording content. A couple of issues:
1) I see four, possibly five effects pedals/stomp boxes, and I can't tell that they 'effected' anything! Did you have them dialed into the 'Placebo' setting?
2) When he selected the different cabs in Ableton, each setting did barely anything to the sound/signal as well. It was downright laughable when he excitedly says "Rock!", when upon clicking it, the already mind numbingly plain sound actually gets tinnier and weaker!
3) The sound of the metronome clicking throughout the recordings was annoying and distracting, very amateurish.
All in all, based on what was presented here, I have to humbly give the remainder of this series a pass. I appreciate the effort/work though, thank you....

No you can plug 1/4" inputs into your audio interface.
im getting a small delay in my headphones how do i fix this? It makes it really difficult to record
try changing your buffer size/sample rate in the audio preferences section

Why is my guitar being recorded/coming out the monitors at a lower pitch?! I've tried different tempos... I'm not doing anything weird with warping etc (its a clean new track) - please help as I'm going mad here!
Should guitars be wrapped into tempo? Or should they naturally be a little off?

Not sure what to tell you. This is definitely a Reverend. There are differences between the American and foreign-made guitars, though.

"Better sound" what does that mean? It's up to you to find your tone. 1. You can record direct (like he does here) or you can mike an amp. 2. You can use plugins to add effects or amp simulations or you can use pedals and a real amp to shape the tone. If you don't like the pedals he uses then experiment till you find ones you like. 3. What he didn't go over, keep the signal set as high as you can without going over 0 db. Often this means keeping the average signal at about -10db. In this example though it's much lower, probably due to this being less of a problem recording direct than with a microphone. But the idea is a hotter (louder) signal masks background noise better.
