I noticed that during the pandemic and ammo craze all that was available at my local gun stores was 28 gauge. So I looked and found a 28 gauge adapter on short lane adapters and turned my topper into a dependable 28 gauge squirrel gun. The single shot shotgun is amazing and full of heritage.
Dave - Thankyou sir... I got the 8 inch 12 ga to .22 adaptor (using the discount) several months ago after seeing your vid... and finally got to try it out for the first time this weekend. It was remarkably accurate. I took my 8 y/o son out for his 1st shooting lesson and in 15 minutes he was repeatedly hitting coke cans at 25 yards. My 12 ga single shot has new life as a trainer ! One more thing to add to the versitility of a 12 ga single shot. Many thanks from my boy and I.
Dave, do you think that a break barrel single shot shotgun would be better gun overall in terms of usability and versatility as opposed to a pump action gun?
Dave, I've watched every one of your videos over the last year and it continues to improve everything I love about bushcraft and self-reliance. Keep on, keeping on brother because you are the man. That is all.
Hey Dave, would those 12ga inserts work in a pump action also or just a break open style? I mean, will they be too hard on the bolt, pressure wise? I breach load cutshells, so I would think they would be ok so long as you don't cycle them through the mag. I bench/stump reload my shells rather than muzzle load, mostly because I prefer a pump action to the single shot, but this insert would be a nice addition for ammo versatility. Looking into those full brass shells from your other video too.
I am doing some research on reloading the 410 shotgun shell and from my research it is about 40 grains of powder. Still haven't tried it but it should work out.
Ive ordered a few of these, but your 556 idea sparked a question. As far as the Law goes, does the barrel of the adaptor have to meet NFA requirements or does the shotgun barrel meet them? Great video, cant wait to see how the 44 mag adaptor works on the hogs down here.
Dave, New sub here! I have watched quite a few of your videos, but the 21st Century longhunter and Yurt stuff is what made be join up. Keep up the great work brother.
Couldn't agree with Dave more about the 12ga, but I already had a 20ga that I never used so I ordered my adapters for that. I ordered the 410/45LC and the .22 adapter from their "zombie series" that is 2-3/4" and rifled. It's a little more but they say it's more accurate than the one that isn't rifled. Now I'll actually use this old gun again, lol.
@wildernessoutfitters Your right, except for Elk. Up here in Canada, you won't get within four hundred yards and they'll move - no matter how stealthy you think you are. A .308 or 7mm Ultra Mag is the tool for that job. Good point and I mostly agree with you. Cheers!
Great vid Dave, I would like to make a recommendation though. As I am sure you know the weakest link of the M6 is the takedown pin. If yours is anything like mine then it holds decent when the rifle is together, but when it is taken apart it could easily be lost. I installed a bolt of the same diameter with a wing nut and a washer on either side. I can still take it down quickly and easily and I dont have to worry about losing the take down pin. Keep the vids comin brother!
@wildernessoutfitters I get that, but finding them is finding them regardless of how they got there. Like you said, 12 gauge shells will be in every farm house. They didn't grow there ; ). Ingredients will be around too. They have varied uses. That in no way is meant to diminish your point at all. Just contributing what I see could be important factors, because it's important to use all resources you can to improve the odds of getting what you need.
Agree on getting close to the animal you are hunting. I dont hunt with a gun all that often but have more than filled th freezer with my bow throughout the years and it has been all within 15-40 yards! I shot 2 within an hour out of the same stand and almost layed them on top of each other at 20 yards!
I just ordered 2 adapters. A 20ga and 410 adapter. Thanks for saving me 10% with the coupon code. I also sent them an email asking if they would make a rifled 410 to 22LR adapter. They only make a smooth bore one right now. Thanks again Dave.
I had been wondering about over under shot guns and there you have one. My question is, what about an over under breech loading 12 gauge? I know that obviously its a possibility but did you opt away from an over under 12gauge for any reason or is it just not common man enough for demonstration?
Best thing about the .410 is that it is already chambered to fire the .45 ACP and .45 Colt also, then having the ability to fire a .22 with the same weapon, without ever having to buy any sort of adapter is very nice. The M6 is not the only .22LR/.410 over/under available, just the most well known.
I have a book call The Anarchist book. it talks about using strike any where match to re load a primer.in this book it show to use 3 match head to fill the primer/then with a match stick tamp down the match heads
Have you taken any squirrels or anything with the .22LR adapter yet dave? If not It would be cool to do it then make a video (Im assuming it would be hard for you to get the actual shot and kill on camera) Mainly because I and probably some other viewers are a little skeptical about this adapter
Dave have you ever tried a "LongTom" or "GooseGun" shotgun? That's a single shot shotgun with a 36" barrel. Seems like that would give you just a little bit more accuracy? There's a South GA style "Turkey Shoot just down the road from my house. These guys are very serious and have custom turned barrels that are 36" or greater, so they get tighter patterns. Just curious what you think of a longer barrel shotgun? I have the opportunity to get one in good condition & cheap.
Well Mr. Canterbury, i just ordered 3 of them, 22-12ga, 12ga-410ga and 44 mag to 12ga. I have three of the single shot 12ga and i carry them all over my land. iv shot everything from deer to snakes with it. I too think if i had to pick on gun to go into the woods for a long time, i would pick that one.. Thanks for the info and God Bless
I ordered too soon to get your discount, my adapter came in todays mail. But $18.50 was already a good price. Haven't tried it yet it was already dark when I received it Thanks for all the great vids on the long guns.
Let me start by saying, Thank you for the discount. I thoroughly enjoy your videos, and as a self taught survivalist, take from it any information i can. In true idea of self reliance, I am also trying to learn Flintknapping, because like you say, its hard to come up with black powder in the wild. IT'S TOUGH!!!
@homeinthewhiteoaks without a measurer black powder is more forgiving and you can just guess the load, with smokeless a small error in measuring could cuase your gun to explode
I have a drilling at home, a side by side shotgun with a rifle under. My friend and I were shopping around for another one, and drillings are expensive. Are they worth the money? I think so, but he isn't quite so sure.
Sort of a modern day hudson bay trade gun...smoothbore ball or shot take anything from squirrels to moose.Woodsmen 200 years ago used them like the HnR 12 gauge today except the trade guns were usually 20
Its all about availability and versatility. I really like that scout rifle. Does it come in 12 gauge and .22? That would be an awesome combination.Around here nearly eery farmer has either one, or both of those guns. So ammo wouldn't be hard to come by.Thanks..
@smokexreefer Not that I care to give a physics lesson, but how do you think a gun works? It is a controlled explosion in a confined area in order to propel a mass. That said, any compound that contains a fuel source and oxygen supply will work to fire the aforementioned mass. Ergo, enough gun cotton packed with a wad will propel whatever mass you put in the barrel. It was used in cannons to push the shot out of the barrel so a more powerful explosive could impart more energy.
@wildernessoutfitters continued, the Colt .45 + P pressure is about equal to the 3.5 inch mag shotgun shell. 14,000 psi. That's probably about the max, except in the shorter adapter it will lose some pressure. I don't know for sure how much, probably a good %, but that's something not to guess about.
"you can't make black powder in the wild" I read once that during the revolution farmers had to keep niter beds, made from manure and urine to make KNO3. Kno3 would then be milled with charcoal and sulfer. I read from another source that sulfer isn't absolutely necessary for black powder. The purpose of the sulfer is to lower the ignition temp. The power comes from the charcoal. I'm willing to wager that it can be done. Dave, please try it so I don't have to.
@Techsan75 I was hoping you'd be in a tree stand : ) 12 gauge slug should be plenty backup. If they come out with the rifled extended adapters that should be plenty. Don't know if a tumbling .44 would penetrate well enough for reliable stopping on a big hog.
@wildernessoutfitters Yeah you got to my point towards the end. Im not worried about an adapter for the 556/223 but an adapter for a 12g a that is maybe 6" long instead of the current 2 3/4 or whatever they are. You know What i mean? Im just throwing some thoughts out there for yah brother. No matter what you decide it's still a great product and I will be ordering for sure.
these little adapters are great, I have been using them for years.... It's hard to believe so many people have never tried them! I mainly used them for clay shooting, but yeah...perfect for SHTFs.... Your right about the gunpowder, it's not a practical resource.
Dave I'm sitting hear listening to you on the M-6.and you gave me an Idea on the 12g. seeing how the butt stock is almost hollow. why couldn't you first cut the top section of the butt of the stock then take a router and hollow it out enough to allow you to place the 12g shells in the butt of the 12g.then put hinges on the section you cut off.hope you see where I'm going with this
i think the adapters are great .. you look for fuction not fashion , just close the range of what ever you are shooting at , think of it as a SNUB NOSE PISTOL they aren't great for range but they ARE effective .. THE MORE YOU SHOOT THE better you WILL get ... great job dave
@InTheSticks0001 I don't think you'll get full bullet expansion out of these adapters, much of the powder won't burn until past the short tube & fps will diminish. If you were reloading & used faster powders like pistol powder, you might get much better performance. Don't know if that fit's Dave's scenario, but if you were doing it on purpose you could reload the ammo to get max benefit. Could even mess with mash match head head material & fine aluminum powder for a flash powder but have to test
@Techsan75 : ) I was hoping you'd be in a tree stand. Slugs back up will surly do it. If they do a rifled extended adapter should be great. Don't know if a tumbling .44 bullet would penetrate well enough on a good hog for reliable stopping. Look forward to the vid.
I use my Stoger double barrel 12ga and carry my 22lr adapter 357 mag adapter and 9mm adapter as i carry a Ruger Blackhawk convertible .357/9mm for defense in the woods Dual Purpose I Learned it from you Dave Keep It up
I should be ok in Australia, as i have a rimfire permit, which is a .22 and also a shotgun, also have centrefire, I will give it a go and see if i can get it in. Cheers Mick
just sayimg hi from Red Deer Alberta Canada!! and thank for the info you put out !! would like to see come up hereif you ever get a chance, or i can put enuf monet away for the family to come down there! got a good start on prepping but need some more put away first family of 6. but we are learning lots of options!! to what our grandparents showed us!!!!
@wildernessoutfitters the white tips can be used ive done it with .209 and it works good take the white tips crush them take the powder dump it into the primer cup(you have to decap the primer shotgun primer have 3 pieces the body the anvil and the cup) i'll try to make a vid soon on this to show
I talked to him also and he said he could make them longer with a taper to fit 4" to 6" so we can have it AFTERMARKET rifled so you can get 4" of twist. That would be VERY accurate and allow you to reach out and touch some...game. I would like to do the 12 gauge / 357.
@wildernessoutfitters I dont know about the adapters but I have a cobray derringer over under thats 410 under 22lr and Its my goto handgun for feild use cause it can fire the 22lr ammo 45 colt and 410 shotgun ammo and the short berral about 2 or3 inches dose fine with 45 out to at least 10 or 12 yards and you can keep it in the kill zone out to about 20 yards but with little that would resemble a good group is that about the same thing your finding w/ these adapters after using them?
@wildernessoutfitters Savage used to make the Model 24, which is also a 22LR/410, and European American Armory Corporation imports the Baikal 410/22LR, as well as a 12ga/308 or 12ga/5.56. They're a bit heavy, though.
You are the only person I have ever heard call a M6 a beautiful gun. What I would love to see is a rifled 357 mag adapter, In Indiana the "smallest" round you can hunt deer with is a 357. great video!
@ManoloMuertes to answer, I think you could as far as size, but I'm not sure. Pressures would be pushing it maybe. They would exceed the strongest 12 gauge loads in pressure as far as I know. You can shoot the 45 Colt out of the Casull or however it's spelled unless I'm wrong. The Casull would blow away the .45 Colt +P power wise I'm pretty sure. I'd check with the guys on the web site to see if they know it would be ok.
Yes, that is true, but as far as versatility a 12 gauge shotgun is more useful. The 12 gauge can be used for small game as well as having the ability to take large game.
I would like to see the adapter made with an actual longer barrel on it. while this would only work for the shotgun model i think it would really help. It doesn't need to be very long just long enough to stabilize flight.
Oh ya love the adapters. I just wish they were about 10" long and all of them could be bought with or with out rifling. 14 an a half inches for the .223 or any other large rifle cal.
Amen Amen Dave! I think people are so caught up in perfect ballistics they miss the point here. No weapon is perfect--every gun has advantages and drawbacks. Here the priority is versatility--a single, simple, weapon that can do many things. You might have to sacrifice accuracy to get versatility and you might have to sacrifice multiple shots to get the bomb proof-ness of a simple single shot shotgun.
@wildernessoutfitters Another concern with rifle round adaptation, a 12 gauge is capable of 11,500psi or the round generates that much pressure at max, the 3.5" shell 14,000psi. The .308 maxes at over 60,000 psi, so that's probably a total no go by a long shot, talk about blowing up in your face. The guys you're working with probably have all those numbers though better than I do. From what I know the .45 Colt +P exceeds the rating of a normal shotgun shell too, but depends on the specific gun.
The .45LC +P is comparable to the .44 mag so it's no more pressure unless you use it in another gun as well, then you better know you're rated for +P. A guy brought up the proposition of using 454 Casull round in that .410 adapter, that would be REALLY interesting. That's really getting mean. Or if you had the 50 S&W Mag 400grain slug which has the pressures of rifle cartridges in the .308 range but like we were talking, these hand gun rounds maximize faster burning powder best for the adapters.
there are PCP air rifles chambered in .357, .44, .45 and .50 available, with almost or more kicking power than the powder versions of these calibrers. not to mention some conventional air rifles in .22 (spring action) can take down a boar with a good shot
HAve you heard of the "drilling" a kind gun very common here in germany with three barels most have to 12 gauge and one .22 but other combinations with bigger calibers exist too.
I swear I am heartbroken every time I see that M6 Scout... I truly do not understand why they stopped making them. Wonderful as they are with their practical simplicity I cannot justify the cost, what with the simple materials and construction; it is their rarity that drives the price. I really do wish they would make them again so it's usefulness can be appreciated by more.
You can find the components for black powder around, probably could even after something happened because it is around. Caps are so much better though it's not even funny. If you have potassium nitrate (salt peter) & sulfur, which isn't that rare, all you need is charcoal & the right ratios & basically powder particle size which makes a lot of difference. You can also pack about as much black powder as you want & all it will do it blow out the end burning, so to get loads optimal keep trying it
@mapbike They are coming out with rifled adapters & longer ones. .357 should do excellent with rifling. Especially if they come out with longer adapters for it. .357 is a round that could really shine in these adapters. I would really love to see it in 7.62×25mm Tokarev too. Nasty fast little cartridge that does well without 16" of barrel
I absolutely love this adapter deal. What a fantastic idea. Now I can take all those long guns out of my pack. That thing was getting heavy. LOL And thanks Dave for getting us a discount. I am definitely getting some of these adapters. Too bad someone stole my 12 gauge single shot. I am in the market to buy one. What is the best one to buy in your opinion? Thanks again, Friend. I thank The Lord for you.
@wildernessoutfitters 9" rifled adapters? Wow, how did I miss that? That will be very useful, good to 100 yards & beyond. 16" is where the regular .22 is max efficient, but 9" is pretty good. Those will be extremely valuable if they can get them stable so they won't move & you can depend on that to calculate where they will hit (or some more fancy terminology for that lol).
@DrDissent That's a fact for sure, I said that someplace, that I'd sure rather have one than not. It would be cool if they could figure a way to make them longer & rifled if they are not. That would probably be a lot more expensive though. When Dave shot the .22 I was surprised pleasantly by the accuracy. I'd like to know the speed of all the options & accuracy. That gives you the energy so you know if taking that shot is a good idea or not on what kind of game.
I have the 22LR adap. & the 38spl/357mag adap., with the 22lr it's just as Dave said here, 15-20 yds I can put all shots in a pie plate easy, dead center everytime? no, but grouped well considering, the 357mag adap. shooting my reloads will group at 4"- 6" at 20+ yards, I've not shot farther yet, but I plan some tests by placing foam plates @ 15, 20, 25 & 30 yds & from a rested position fire 3 shots at each plate and see what I get, will be good fun and I will learn my limits with the 357 adap.
Nice video you just opened to whole world of single shot shotgun to me...also I just don't understand why Springfield armory won't sell the m6 scout any more even though so many people want it...but i realize if they do re-release it they will more than likely jack up the price...marketing strategy
@InTheSticks0001 If that's true that is great & extremely effective. I don't know exactly how much a .44 mag would lose, but to only lose 200 seems a little optimistic to me, could be wrong. You can use the .410/L Colt adapter & with a 325 gr +P get 1,325 ft/s @ 7.5", similar but you also get the .410. The pressure is also a concern, a regular 12 gauge isn't rated for 14000 CUP which is what that +P round comes close to generating, but a 3.5 inch mag rated shotgun can hold up to 14000 CUP.
I noticed that during the pandemic and ammo craze all that was available at my local gun stores was 28 gauge. So I looked and found a 28 gauge adapter on short lane adapters and turned my topper into a dependable 28 gauge squirrel gun. The single shot shotgun is amazing and full of heritage.
the 556 adapter sounds like a great idea.I am thinking witha 8 or 9 inch adapter you ought to be able to shoot accurately out past 50 yards.
Dave - Thankyou sir... I got the 8 inch 12 ga to .22 adaptor (using the discount) several months ago after seeing your vid... and finally got to try it out for the first time this weekend. Dave, do you think that a break barrel single shot shotgun would be better gun overall in terms of usability and versatility as opposed to a pump action gun?
Thanks Dave, I never knew adapters where even made like you show. I'll be ordering some of these this week.
What ever happened with the 5.56/.223 adapter?
Dave, I've watched every one of your videos over the last year and it continues to improve everything I love about bushcraft and self-reliance. Keep on, keeping on brother because you are the man. That is all.

How about the time tested Savage 24, in all of it's variations?
now all you need is the 10 gauge to 50 bmg adapter
I am doing some research on reloading the 410 shotgun shell and from my research it is about 40 grains of powder. Still haven't tried it but it should work out.

Great vid Dave. I do have a concern about them extracting when you break it open for your nex round. Have you had any problems with that?
Dave, New sub here! I have watched quite a few of your videos, but the 21st Century longhunter and Yurt stuff is what made be join up. Keep up the great work brother.
Would the chamber pressures not be too high for a shotgun when shooting a .303 round? Thanks for all the vids Dave.
Dave, thanks for working out the discount. I ordered three adapters can't wait for the 5.56. Thanks for the great videos.
Couldn't agree with Dave more about the 12ga, but I already had a 20ga that I never used so I ordered my adapters for that. Great deal Dave. I think a truly great option to work on would be to recreate the M6 Scout and have it at a common man price.
I wish I knew anything about guns, other than "pull the trigger and awesomeness occurs."
Great vid Dave, I would like to make a recommendation though. As I am sure you know the weakest link of the M6 is the takedown pin. So glad adaptors are back. I used to buy "shell shrinkers" from the late Harry Owen. Did you know he made one to fire .32acp from a .30-06?
@wildernessoutfitters I get that, but finding them is finding them regardless of how they got there. Like you said, 12 gauge shells will be in every farm house. They didn't grow there ; ). this is such a simple concept its unbelievable..... why didnt i think about this
@wildernessoutfitters
Why would you soak the fouling??? That makes it harder to get out of the barrel. Can you reuse the insert after you shoot it?
Dave, i still don't understand : with buckshot, aren't you bound to eat a lot of lead pellets stuck into the critter you sprayed?
Let me start by saying, Thank you for the discount. I thoroughly enjoy your videos, and as a self taught survivalist, take from it any information i can. I would imagine you'd want to install a rear sight as well, seeing as a rifle is basically pointless with just a front bead sight.
I have a drilling at home, a side by side shotgun with a rifle under. My friend and I were shopping around for another one, and drillings are expensive. Are they worth the money? I think so, but he isn't quite so sure.
Out of curiosity, would it be possible to work up an adapter for 30-06 or even .308?
I picked one up in 9mm since that round is so prolific.
Sort of a modern day hudson bay trade gun...smoothbore ball or shot take anything from squirrels to moose.Woodsmen 200 years ago used them like the HnR 12 gauge today except the trade guns were usually 20
Thanks for the vid Dave. Howbout a 10% discount at the Pathfinder store?

Dave I'm sitting hear listening to you on the M-6.and you gave me an Idea on the 12g.
seeing how the butt stock is almost hollow. why couldn't you first cut the top section of the butt of the stock then take a router and hollow it out enough to allow you to place the 12g shells in the butt of the 12g.then put hinges on the section you cut off.hope you see where I'm going with this
Some are very accurate with the NAA minis. 1 1/8", 1 5/8" barrels. And, snub nose revolvers do the deed well. These adapters kick butt!
i think the adapters are great .. you look for fuction not fashion , just close the range of what ever you are shooting at , think of it as a SNUB NOSE PISTOL they aren't great for range but they ARE effective ..
I use my Stoger double barrel 12ga and carry my 22lr adapter 357 mag adapter and 9mm adapter as i carry a Ruger Blackhawk convertible .357/9mm for defense in the woods
Dual Purpose I Learned it from you Dave Keep It up
I should be ok in Australia, as i have a rimfire permit, which is a .22 and also a shotgun, also have centrefire, I will give it a go and see if i can get it in.
Cheers
Mick
Awesome Dave...i like the concept. Been watchin your vids for several years now. Learning alot from your channel.
Thank you!
Ben
just sayimg hi from Red Deer Alberta Canada!! and thank for the info you put out !! would like to see come up hereif you ever get a chance, or i can put enuf monet away for the family to come down there! got a good start on prepping but need some more put away first family of 6. but we are learning lots of options!! to what our grandparents showed us!!!!
Sweet. I've been looking at the adapters since the first video you did on them but definitely gonna pick a few up now. Thanks
@wildernessoutfitters
Savage used to make the Model 24, which is also a 22LR/410, and European American Armory Corporation imports the Baikal 410/22LR, as well as a 12ga/308 or 12ga/5.56.
Saw your survival show today on the discovery channel with the barefoot guy...Good show..Awesome job !
Great innovations Dave & sounds like a real good deal.
Awesome! I'll be looking forward to the 5.56/.223 adapter. Thanks Dave!
Thanx 4 the discount code Dave, that's awesome:) Thanx 4 all the gr8 knowledge u give us everyday as well.
@teb0atoz It's two adapters whether one nests in the other or not, but if they nest it saves space and weight.
there are PCP air rifles chambered in .357, .44, .45 and .50 available, with almost or more kicking power than the powder versions of these calibrers.
not to mention some conventional air rifles in .22 (spring action) can take down a boar with a good shot
You can also pack about as much black powder as you want & all it will do it blow out the end burning, so to get loads optimal keep trying it
can you do a video shooting different ammo types with these adapters? id be interested in seeing how accurate it is
@mapbike They are coming out with rifled adapters & longer ones. .357 should do excellent with rifling.
Dave, will it work on a side by side shotgun, im guessing it will
Thanks for the vid Dave hope to see you at the Indy 1500 and thanks for your work for a discount for us!
Received mine yesterday. .22, 9mm and 44 mag. Any idea why only the .22 is rifled?
@bobaloosb Dave has it right, that's important with any corrosive powder. It chemically neutralizes the acidic residue first.
A lot of us die hard fans have asked about reloading the primers you made into black powder.
Can you please give us your answer?
I have the 22LR adap. & the 38spl/357mag adap., with the 22lr it's just as Dave said here, 15-20 yds I can put all shots in a pie plate easy, dead center everytime? no, but grouped well considering, the 357mag adap. shooting my reloads will group at 4"- 6" at 20+ yards, I've not shot farther yet, but I plan some tests by placing foam plates @ 15, 20, 25 & 30 yds & from a rested position fire 3 shots at each plate and see what I get, will be good fun and I will learn my limits with the 357 adap.
Any way of useing a 22 round as a primer for reloads? Maybe if you trimmed the sides you could use it for a cap?
What about a .22LR adapter that fits inside the 9" .556/223 adapter, that way you could have the versatility of all 3 calibers?
Hello Dave, give us all an update on ur NEF shotgun. It's almost 10 or so yes since u made a vid on it.
Nice video you just opened to whole world of single shot shotgun to me...also I just don't understand why Springfield armory won't sell the m6 scout any more even though so many people want it...but i realize if they do re-release it they will more than likely jack up the price...marketing strategy
@wildernessoutfitters Thanks for the look Dave. Just me and my son enjoying some time shooting.
