This is possibly the most well written 45 minutes of TV, ever. 90% of this episode is two people talking, in the same room. To be able to carry a conversation between two characters, and at the same time push the story forward and keep the viewer's interest in such a simple scenario is pretty fuckin impressive. There's maybe 5 or 6 other characters in this whole episode. A few guards, another prisoner or two, and a hallucination of Delenn. JMS is fucking Brilliant.

Yeah "Bottle episodes" like this usually always end up being really good, because it's all about the drama, the acting, the interplay between the two actors, building off each other in a confined moment of acting. DS 9 had a fantastic episode in...I think season 1, titled Duet. With Kira and a Cardassian prisoner she was interrogating for war crimes. It's a FANTASTIC episode. If you've never seen it, you should check it out.

Deep Space Nine showed the side of the federation where under duress and far from home, there were cracks in even the sterling example of the federation. I liked it for that. In Babylon 5, the characters had more weaknesses and thus more depth. More specifically, "But can you win?" "Every time I say NO" perfectly embodies the core of what civil disobedience for a cause is about.

@@johnbanks4761watching through this episode I'd like to believe that John's conviction is what rattles the interrogator the most. He say through out that the reason he's there is because of the government and not of his own beliefs. The interrogator believes only that what he's doing is because he has to. The problem is though that John doesn't believe that, he doesn't believe in the governments "truth" and it's clear that as he continues to fight against it the interrogator is feeling more and more useless since they can't even fathom that belief.

B5 had some genuinely moving and powerful stuff, perhaps more so than any other sci-fi show I can think of. Sheridan's little rebuttal here is every bit as powerful now, perhaps even more. B5's message that "one person can make a difference" and "one person saying no can win" are ones that should be taken to heart. And yes, I thought of Tron the first time I saw this scene too!

I totally agree that Babylon 5 is far superior than Trek. And I know that Paramount took much of the basis for DS9 from Babylon 5 (even though DS9 started earlier than B5, JMS pitched B5 to Paramount in the late 80s, but they declined saying they didn't want to run two different science fiction franchises). And even though, on occasion I laugh at how blatantly it rips off B5, I still loved the themes of religion, war, and politics applied to Trek. DS9 is by far the best Trek!

While they were in the process of unhooking my television, game system, etc. the only things they ended up getting away with were two DVDs: All Quiet on the Western Front and Danny Kaye's The Court Jester. It always baffles me how conservatives can look at an anti-nationalism, anti-fascist, piece of work that warns against anti science, anti truth, and is blatantly pro diversity, and fail to see it.
It almost seems as if all you need for people to have the text of the show fly right over their heads is to have a military outfit on the good side and to not be blatantly anti cop.
This show even had an entire episode about plague and quarantine as a precaution in when not much is known about the illness and somehow the op of this comment is "saddened" by JMS "changing" to support an abundance of caution in the face of a plague. Maybe it wasn't him who changed. Maybe it was you?
Curious... do you just forget the parts that disagree with your viewpoints? Or do you decide that any possible critique of the groups you are a part of isn't really there unless the situation is one to one exactly it isn't meant to be social commentary?

@@LC-sc3en In times of true crisis it is only corrupt government elements that begin making demands on the people that they serve. C19 was a test run to gauge compliance that also served to damage the sitting President at the time. It was a real virus but there was no true need to do as they did. I know because my friend and his family had just returned from vacation in China in late November of 2019. I went to see them and two weeks later I had the worst flu I have ever had in my 55 years and was only the third time I have ever had the flu. The first few days of the third week I began coughing up blood but by the end of the week I was fine. Never once during those three weeks did I go to the hospital or clinic. I did tell everyone to not hug or touch me during that time as well. We never wore masks or got the jab when it came out. No one else in my family of 5 became ill either. The supposed cure is an experimental genetics platform. In a Pennsylvania Congressional hearing 1 1/2 years ago the doctor monitoring the research team was asked if they had found any proof the jab was dangerous. He stated that within the first year of its release to the public it had directly caused 187,000 deaths in the U.S. alone.
Did you not notice how coordinated the messaging was around the world?
I guess I can understand believing it if you had never taken time in the past to analyze odd quirks in the system. In 2018 I was going through releases on Wikileaks and ran across the primary reason I became concerned about the C19 narrative. It was the notes of an aide to a federal judge during the Anthrax terror trial in 2006. It was only a few pages where she had made note of what the judges schedule was and things she needed to do for him. The judge had attended several meetings over a few week period where he met with pharmaceutical company representatives, military bio research scientists and attorneys specializing in the medical field. At the end of the meetings two reports were generated with the notice for the aide to have them classify the documents out of anyone's reach.
I do not know what was inside the reports but I do know their titles.
      1. The Macroeconomics of a Pandemic
      2. The Profitability of Avian Flu
Remember, he was presiding over a terror trial related to Anthrax.
Anthrax is bacterial. Decide for yourself.
It appears as if you believe MAGA types are fascist and do not believe in fairness. If we were fascist we would not be standing up for innate rights.
It may also be that you believe the DEI narrative is exactly what it is advertised to be. DEI is a poison designed to divide the populace and inflame emotions and plays a large role in destroying economies in various ways. It produces victims in all areas with the only exception being immune to it are the few who created it or have been told what its purpose is. We fully believe in true diversity, equality and inclusiveness. True DEI does not seek to force outcomes. It would not seek to compel or censor speech. It would not cause hate.
D: We welcome those of all races, genders and nationalities.
E: Equality of opportunity we believe in. Equity of outcomes we will never support. Equity creates an attitude of irresponsibility. Equality of opportunity means you have to earn your progress.
I: We accept all people but we will never accept being forced to give special accommodations to someone's feelings. Humanity has made it this far with zero need to do that. Toughen up buttercup.
All of this stuff is designed to create chaos or submission. We will never submit. On these platforms it is hard to tell whether one has simply believed the lie or if they are an activist promoting the lie. If you happen to be the latter know this:
We know the programs which were installed into our agencies that intentionally created activist communities across our nation. We know the law firms that handle the payroll and supplies. We know which officials at the federal, state, county and city levels that are involved in subverting our government. We know the NGOs and their support network inside our agencies. We know the identity of the donors. The only people we will not take action against are their victims. The people whose uniqueness they took advantage of in order to use them as political capital in order to produce a foundational transition in our style of government. Another sad part is this means we must dismantle the UN and likely put WEF acolytes in tribunals. Its going to hurt the economy of the entire world. Horribly.
If you thought these people ever cared about you I empathize with the pain it will cause to many. They may be told yet another fantastic lie that will cause them to take to the streets in rage and hatred. Please don't do it.
Try to remember that if you feel hate it is your egos way of protecting itself when extreme inner trauma is not properly handled. It projects itself onto others. That's why it was done to you.

      @Sargonarhes 5 лет назад

Very true, the series Babylon 5 opens during an election year and things go from there. In Star Trek we know there to be a President of the Federation, but we really have no clue how they are selected. It's a assumed to be a democratic vote, yet Star Trek has never shown this side of the Federation. We've seen the Klingon process, the Romulans and even the Ferengi and Cardassians. But for some reason the writers after all these years have totally overlooked any insight into the Federation.

  • @Kainlarsen
    @Kainlarsen 17 лет назад +2

Well, there was that one time with Picard being interrogated by the Cardassians. That was awesome.
But B5 is so much better at illustrating the Human nature. We are *not* all Utopian Atheist Socialists like the Federation, we will still be capable of the best and the worst because of differences in Ideologies. And this scene displays it wonderfully.

I like to imagine a short story scenario, where President Sheridan has the rangers do a top secret mission: "rendition" this interrogator off to some backwater barely-habitable planet. Sheridan personally confronts him. He's scared shitless, screaming that he has rights.
Sheridan silences him, and remarks, "You once said we were all expandable. That's more true of you than ever, and worse. You are inconvenient. You are someone Earthdome would love to forget ever existed. They can't risk embarrassment by putting you on trial. But if you were to quietly disappear, no one would care, no one would question. And that brings you to me. I can't put you on trial either. The ISA can't afford the political blowback. But I can't let you escape consequences for your actions either. So, I do the only convenient thing I can do.
Every government throughout history has had its gulags. Secret prisons. I was a guest in yours. Now you are a guest of mine. I always thought the ISA would be different, but appears I was wrong. This planet is uninhabited and remote. There is no water or anything remotely edible for miles. Your only escape is death. But please accept this gift. (Sheridan drops a box on the ground). The gift of choice. Goodbye Mr. Interrogator."
With that, Sheridan boards his shuttle and leaves for good. The Interrogator cautiously opens the box. In it he finds a bottle of whiskey, a presumably-poisoned corned beef sandwich, and the "choice": a PPG pistol with a single charge.

To Micheal: the first three years of TNG were ridiculously politically correct (and usually pretty boring) were when Roddenberry had the most control over the series. Most of the utopian framework for the Federation was his idea. Putting female characters in tight or revealing outfits was a sixties "progressive" male's idea of "liberating".

Oh, c'mon. Did they really need his signature from his hand? They could easily forge his signature. Not a problem. Somewhere in archive should be the documents signed by Sheridan. These fascists are too obsessed with confessions and signatures of their victims.

Totalitarian nations often did exactly this sort of thing. They wanted their forced confessions to stand up, wanted the "guilty" to confess openly. Faking Sheridan's signature would be easy, but if he's not paraded before the people to verify that he did indeed confess to guilt then people become suspicious. And if he is shown to the people then he can't be allowed to speak, because he can show them to be liars with a few words.
Totalitarians love show trials, forced confessions, and the like...but they have a desperate need to prove their legitimacy.
