  • Olly shows you how to check an ALH oil pump, and pulls his crankshaft for inspection ... things are getting exciting!! Cant wait.

The crank can use a good polish indeed. The rest seems like normal wear.

Have you thought of doing your own crank polish? It's fairly easy, shoelace, some fine Sandpaper and some wd40.

I did consider it... But I'd rather pay the $ and have a shop do it exactly right on this one 💁 I also had it checked while it was there. Sometimes $ for peace of mind is worth it

Yeah, having it done the right way definitely gives some peace of mind.

they never had oil pressure issues, leaks yeah, but with proper maintenance you can keep it in mint condition

tbh if i were u i would try to fit a pd engine. its newer (same mounts as the alh) outputs higher power, bigger turbo, bigger/longer duration camshaft lobes the injectors are a lot higher pressure and inside the head thus works quieter and it has more convenient upgradability.(used until 2011 on the mk4s/facelifts)
    * avoid (B**) engine codes. for some reason they didn't use the piston bearing notch and they all failed there. ( most robust engine codes imo was awx / avf 130hp) they work at 1.5bar and they last forever like the alh you got (you gonna need the entire engine bay wiring harness that goes straight to the ecu and easily just unplugs from the fusebox. 'also the ecu and dashboard for the immobilizer if you have the key)
they use the pd engines for transporter t3 swaps because of their high torque/output power and the amazing fuel consumption

Hey thanks for the detailed comment! Definitely too far in to switch now lol BUT the primary driver of using the ALH is it will not be electronic! I have a mechanical pump with an 11mm head that will be running it... Thus the ALH is a pretty sweet option to stay full mechanical. I understand EFI is better, more powerful, yada yada.. it's just not what I'm going for atm 👍
