Let's turn a VW Rabbit into a RACE CAR!
Have you ever considered taking one of the slowest, most economy-minded cars in history and making it a RACE CAR? Probably not, but that's what this is about! I've owned some version of the first generation Volkswagen Rabbit for the last 10 years. Over time my intent with the little car has transformed from "lets go to work", to "how fast can this go?"
I'm pushing the limits of what the 1.6L diesel engine is capable of and making a one-of-a-kind race car in the process. Come along for the ride!

that shit is so mad scientist it’s awesome
😂😂 thank you
If you get the boost controller working right and can maintain the 32 psi it looks like you could have 230hp at 4500rpm
Yes excellent point! I'm hoping to iron that out & go give it another wack.
Congrats man that is pretty sweet!
Thanks a bunch! 🙏
Fucking bad ass! Do you live in / near the Denver metro? Im looking into buying a 82 Rabbit truck 1.6l love your videos and wouldnt mind having someone in the area to possibly help & talk some things over about my possible build. Congrats on the build🤙🏽
Thanks!! Yes I am. Right on 🍺
That’s crazy that this thing is pushing that much power. If you were going to go with a non variable turbo what size would you recommend? Been looking at turning my n/a 1.6 just don’t know what to go with.
Depends how much fuel you are going to run. I would start with what pump head you're going to use (if stock then 9mm) and work back from there. The gt2052 can be good but it'll take most of what a 9mm pump can do. I have a "make some power" video you should check out where I get into it more
@ Awesome thanks man. I plan on upgrading to an 11mm pump head but not right away.
A stock 1.6 gtd makes 70hp with a turbo, how can this make 72 "na" with low compression?? i would love to see a 200hp 1.6 but this results left me sceptical
You raise an interesting point ~one I didn't ponder myself yet~. A couple thoughts- 1) it's not a stock 1.6 set up whatsoever... Better flowing everything, way, way, way more fuel over anything that rolled out the factory, oversized turbo that was still producing 5 psi of boost (not quite na). Honestly all these things together seem nearly enough. 2) The numbers I went over (as mentioned) are corrected numbers, meaning they are comparable to sea level driving, ideal day, etc. The uncorrected is more like 55hp or something in that neighborhood (at Denver altitude). 3) Of course there's no way to share a Dyno test without making a big deal of the numbers, but I think it's really important to remember that it's not necessarily a good way to compute a be all end all HP number (the dyno industry will say differently), but it is an extremely good way to compare modifications & see baselines while eliminating other conditions. Ie a quarter mile race is a much better test of the speed of your car but Dyno tests between different modifications is a better way to see slight differences...and at the end of the day that's what I'm here for 💁 I'm gonna test the snot out of a bunch of different variables now that we have a baseline to compare to. Finally... To accurately compare this car & numbers to a GTD base 70hp... Ya need to put a stock GTD on a Dynojet Dyno and then we'll have an apples to apples comparison to talk about 👍👍👍 I appreciate the thoughtfulness
Which engine is this? I have 3 1.6’s here, I have SB, JR and JP. I’m just wondering if I can stick a turbo on the N/A JP
Where do you look for that casting code?
This block in particular is an old TD, it has a mechanical head but oil squirters 👍
@@OliverFetter the code is at the front of the block in the top right hand corner on a flat surface, It can be quite tricky to see it, I had to clean the surface with a wire brush to see it on mine
@@OliverFetter yeah I just thought you were using an n/a block and I wondered if it was possible to convert to td without oil squirters
@ryancurry2911 It's totally possible. Oil squirters are ideal, but not an absolute necessity. If you're looking to boost at moderate levels you will have zero worries. An EGT guage will do the lions share of keeping you out of trouble.
Fun,fun fun! That is why I like these in Jeeps😊
I can see that! 👍
No big deal. You only QUADRUPLED the stock horsepower. Nothing to see here, folks. Move along.
😆😆
Flat out awesome. You the man, Oliver!
Thank ya!! Appreciate the constant support 🙏
Thats the highest hp ive seen of this engine, awesome. if temps are the bottleneck maybe water/meth injection can help
Thanks! Yeah that's an interesting thought 🤔
So the maths says going to the 1.9l all should put you around 250hp and 330ft lbs
We'll see! I'm excited to go back & compare after the swap is completed
What a bad ass 1.6, now remember you were on a wheel H.P. dyno. I spent 38 years rebuilding 10L to 16L caterpillar truck engines and we would dyno all are rebuilds on a wheel H.P. dyno and a 550 H.P. factory rated at the crankshaft would get around 460 H.P. to the ground depending on drive train and other parasitic loads so i wood guess that your beast is putting out around 220 H.P. to maybe as much as 240 H.P. at the crankshaft!!!! Ya it's a beast.
Thank you 💪💪 appreciate the kind words & interesting experience!
Did anyone see his earlier video at the dyno? Was that one out of calibration or something
It was on a mustang dyno and those are junk
A few years ago I dyno'd an earlier version of the car and it was a mess bc the shop I went to didn't really know what they were doing 💁
@@OliverFetter cool thanks got an 81 caddy. Very inspiring to upgrade the motor
@ryanb8487 cheers to that 🍺
So badass man!!! Keep the videos coming!! 1.6 mafia!!
💪💪💪
Dyno vid with the timing would be really interesting!
Noted!
Insane!
best 1.6td in the world its ripping
16:00 turbo helps you a lot' if like you said the engine has wear and lower than it should compression. Still pretty impressive from that tiny combustion chamber. Tbh kinda hard to believe that head gasket could hold that pressure 😂 The alh with the bigger combustion chamber stroke and compression would make A LOT more if the fuel is sufficient enough even at lower boost. Impressive results, good job 👍
Thanks!! Yes I'm excited to compare how the 1.9l does.
@OliverFetter keep in mind that direct injection timing is crucial for the engine's/piston cone health. *Had a few engines with bad injection timing due to camshaft tweak, (on the 1.9 pd engines if you shift the camshaft it also changes the time it pushes the injector/pump, it didn't fail but the pistons had significantly more wear on the 5 nozzle spots the injector was shooting) at my understanding, the cone head of the piston is hardened to support that high fuel combustion impact and if the ignition is off you shift the impact on a weaker spot of the piston and its starting to remove material. Lower compression over time, engine had slow soft smoky start and rough low rpm misfiring (unburned fuel) From ear experience i can tell if these engines have low compression just from cranking them up and especially cold ( they don't jump at each piston compression as it should almost like a petrol engine and the same when you shut them off with open intake shutoff valve the engine doesn't kick back and it slowly stops) Their obvious indication is rly low performance before the turbo boost. like snail slow performance, engine feels like its 40hp before the 1900rpm range
@ChrisGR93_TxS super interesting!! Thank you for sharing. Is there a timing position you've landed on for your own that you're satisfied with (in deg BTDC)?
@ChrisGR93_TxS interesting you mention you can "just tell" with engine health, that's how it is with my 1.6. It used to fire on the first starter crank & now it chugs along for a few seconds before catching 😮💨 replacing it asap!
@OliverFetter its been a long time since i measured a alh asv engine and that my main concern about your configuration. i never measured the start up injection timing but it idles around 1-1,3 1,5 btdc The issue comes with the massive atdc injection timing that has a lot of variables and its pretty close to 20º at its max peak performance. Some ppl with pd 1.9 engines with 550cc injectors push 180hp at 30º+ but i don't think its safe. (If you care about economy and engine health)
OMG!!!!
on third try when started to smoke black i knew that it will get results xD good job, here in europe noone work on 1.6 cause of head issue, nice job, but if you put bigger turbo like he221w or something...rods will try to fly around the workshop and head try to get to the moon, surrely need to go 1.9 to get more reliable result ;)
Arp hardware and built engine?
😆😆 thanks I appreciate it. Yeah head studs & beefy rods certainly help keep it together it's not just stock parts in there 👍
Will be moving to a 1.9l soon
Congrats man 🎉
Thanks!
Whata beast bruz! Must feel rewarding after all the hard work. The sloppy crutch on it gives it superconducting style frictionless operation 😂
😂😂😂 yes with any luck I will replace that bedraggled device with a fresh stage 3 when I put the new motor in. 🤔 I was actually kind of worried we would pop it while testing but it held its shit together!
@OliverFetter loool I didn't mean Clutch, but that to 🤣😘
@@Blackbeardxx9 cheeky 😆
You do have the strongest one i hed 145 hp and bent rods but you surpass me 😬
🤔 I know the feeling! I bent the rods in this motor a few years ago so now they're H Beam style instead 👍
You are crazy man!! Great job. Congratulations from Greece. The egt sensor is before the turbo or after?
Before.
X2
I told you man 1.6 can make 200bhp all you need is a big pump, proper turbo and proper settings ! Congratulations mate 🎉🎉 Maybe for your elevation you need a bigger compressor ? 56mm ? I’m living almost at see level idk. But turbine is fine for sure !
Right on sir 💪💪 were doing the best we can 🤔
You have the world fastest 1.6 td
🤨🤨🤨 possible
🎉well done man, been an avid follower from the UK, makes me want to build a monster 1.6 too 😅
You should do it 😁
Congrats man, good work 👍
Thanks! 👍
I’ve been waiting for this!!!
Me too!!
Never skimp on a belt 😢
I hope you adjusted the valves. They get tight and will burn valves.
For sure, they were adjusted.
Any difference in power or torque. Maybe the turbo spools quicker?
Yes, on a heavy build (ie lots of fuel) it should result in better turbo spool and slightly more hp at high RPMs.
Seems like the kind of guy who has a safety torch by the sound of that WEEEEEEEEEEW
😂😂
That’s pretty cool man
🌞 thanks!
When you cranked without starting, was that just no glow plugs? Mines been having problems starting after putting a new head on it, i know my glowplugs where trash, but yea now it wont start at all🤣.. even with replacing the 2 rightmost glowplugs... I'm hoping its not a timing issue
Hmm. That was no fuel pump solenoid. If you're getting white smoke but no start then it's glow plugs/ timing / compression. If you aren't getting any smoke while cranking then you probably need to bleed your fuel lines or check that the fuel solenoid is coming on 👍. Most of the time I used to have starting problems after taking things apart were from not bleeding the fuel lines or half bleeding them.
@OliverFetter thanks! I'll check timing later, probably just restart timing as I know I messed up cause I torqued the cam pulley before the belt was on and the tensioner was torqued. I've got fuel and white smoke, and my glowplugs are wired to a manual switch. Seems to have compression but I haven't tested it.
@OliverFetter update.. I was 2 teeth out on my cam timing. Followed your timing video and now it runs! Starts rough because I need to replace 2 glow plugs.. but it runs!! Thank you. I haven't driven this car in 10 months and I've missed it lots.
Is 2 teeth out not in interference territory?
@@chrisladouceur4093 it had no problems cranking over by hand, didn't make any bad noises, and it ran for 2 weeks like that🤷♂️. Just didn't start easy. It could have even been one tooth, but it was out.
Any plans on transmission and clutch upgrade for the alh?
For now ($ + time), sticking with the 020 but I'm going to pair it with a stage 3 clutch, new throw out & seals & bushing or two 💁 in fairness I generally avoid clutch dropping it, so I don't expect it to explode right away 😅
@OliverFetter maybe upgrade to a newer transmission with cables. More reliable, supports bigger clutch, its more convenient to set the shifter 👍 The biggest challenge will be the front engine mount if you don't wanna spend money on conversion kits and unreliable ebay sellers
@ChrisGR93_TxS good to know 🤔🤔
Yalla where is the dyno video Fetter😂
😆 Sunday
Would you concider selling this to me?😮
🤔🤔 likely not
Can’t wait for the dyno vid!
Hello Oliver.. do you keep the pressure regulator from 9mm pump or you change them from 11mm? Or it doesn't matter?
Interesting question! I just left the 9mm as is except the pump head & rotor.
@OliverFetter maybe it's not necessary to change them because your pump is not m-tdi..
@ΔημήτριοςΔρίβας-γ2δ 💁💁💁
Nice job! Very interesting.. but.. what is the turbo drive pressure?
Depends what I set it to. For high boost I've been running a 35psi drive limit, probably will up it to 45 soon
@OliverFetter dude , do you have an email or telephone number to reach you?
Wow that neat!
I rather this than the douchebags that increas the limiter! This is perfect!!
