- Olly walks you through how to put every nicknack into the head of your 8 valve Volkswagen head (guaranteed vibes & finished product), and bonus of how to check your glow plugs. Enjoy.
Cheers!
helpful tip for you sir: put a dab of grease on the groove side of the keepers (the little clips) so they stick in place when you push them onto the valve stem
That’s a great tip, thanks for sharing!
Heck yeah buddy. Do it right!
No clue how many people care about this, but I for one would be curious how much the mpg changes from the 1.6d to the 1.9ALH. On one hand less displacement is usually better on fuel BUT the injectors are already about the same and the turbo is going to be more efficient down low with the 1.9 so it just might not change or even improve on the larger diesel daily driving wise!
15:02 imagine working on 1.8t 20v with almost half the space to work in there.

Definitely don't need glow plugs on a tdi engine.
Glow plugs on tdi engines work mostly as a low amp warmup help next to the injector and only on rly cold weather (-15c Celsius and under)
Don't even need to wire them up, you can ask ppl with experience on that. If the engine is not firing up its the fuel system 100%
Their operation on rly cold environments is also never full Glow power, just a tiny amount just to increase fuel temp a bit.
*You don't wanna break one inside the cylinder using all the amperage they can draw.... Yes I've seen it happen. Some stupid guy told a customer that the engine need more glow plugs duration to start when the problem was the pump injection timing and a few days after the engine got demolished. He did use direct battery switch in them like you do on your 1.6
Awful lot of advice coming from someone who has no videos on their channel 😂
Great info thank you. Aka throw the duds back in the holes as plugs and leave it 💯
@ sure thing bud
33:35 that's not the actual valve clearance tbf.
With oil pressure the lifters force some extra valve depth.
Pd engines have the same lifters, valve length and size but the longer duration and depth camshaft lobes are doing all the difference in performance.
Also they work with a lot higher fuel injection and turbo pressure. Kinda why ppl had issues with camshaft wear
Yeahh I thought about that.. it's close ish though. Are you saying people have issues with camshaft wear specifically on pd engines? Also that would mean a pd camshaft is a good ALH upgrade.
I’m doing the head gasket on my 1.6td this Spring. Gonna buy a new head instead of getting this one cleaned, resurfaced, etc etc. But I’m looking at options and it seems partsplaceinc has either reman heads, Topline heads, or AMC heads. They all come with full valve train and new cams installed etc. Any suggestions on what to go with? I’m stumped
Hmm that is a bit confusing! I'd strongly recommend you just give them a call, they're usually pretty helpful. To me tho it seems you need to know if you're 11 or 12mm stud and hydraulic or mechanical and then that really just leaves you with the choice of new or refurbished, which both are certainly fine, just comes down to $. Hope this helps!
@@OliverFetter Yeah they're all 12mm with hydraulic. It's just a matter of reman or new. And 2 different makes of new... topline or AMC. They did tell me they can't guarantee the remans don't have some cracking between valves. But I'm not sure how much that even matters
