What gets me is you KNOW that engine was gone over special since its a business deal with Donut. If they can't even get a good motor, what are you and I going to get?
What gets complicated for me is, trying to visualize & understand automatic transmissions with all the planetary gears & maze of directional fluid routes all the fluid goes in the worm trays & elsewhere to make it work & properly shift gears. Just the torque converter itself is sheer genius. Using literally nothing but fluid to connect the engine to the transmission. AKA no mechanical part/connection is used. Just fast spinning transmission fluid & centrifugal force.
Highly recommend buying a book or two, they are all basically the same for motors but will focus more on one or the other types depending on brand. For example, I got a John deere engines book and read through that, then rebuild my first straight 6 diesel no issues
Wow. If you guys had installed it, fired it up, and blown it up, you would have been screwed. This severely undermines the confidence you get when you buy a crate engine, let alone from the manufacturer. I realize that mistakes happen, but damn. I'm stunned.
Usually like 12 months and if you turbo it or supercharge it you better make sure they specifically stated the engine is meant for it or theyll tell you to pound sand@Blue_Flame_Raptor
There wasn't a mistake made....... There were MISTAKES made! That's unacceptable! Then add the fact THAT is what you get for 15 grand!! (There should have been 10 grand cash in the intake ports for that price!)
You guys should do a Replacement for Displacement series where you take a turbo engine and try to match power with the LSX. Then you could do a side by side comparison of the finished cars and a showdown. Really put to rest the age old argument.
I worked at Caterpiller for a year in one of their engine assembly factories Someone forgot a clip like that on one of the C18s. When it went to hot test the piston head came loose and chunks of the piston ended up blowing through the engine block. Ever since its been the main example for every new employee to teach that the smallest detail can lead to drastic effect
Love how they are giving you a new engine to clean up after their tracks, hoping you guys wouldn't release the footage. Well done for not holding back! Informed the public of a possible easy money tactic since race motors blow up all the time and they'd get away with the premature engine failure without being questioned. Now they have got to pull up their socks, at least momentarily.
I don't know about hoping they woudln't release the footage, they are just doing the best they can to make them "whole" without question. Giving you a new one doesn't leave any room for doubt. I guess you're hoping for them to announce that they failed over loudspeakers? It would be nice if they said something about it being unacceptable and how they're going to improve QC.
What if you take it apart, find out the clip is missing and the bearings are ruined, call GM and because you’re not a RUclips channel they tell you’re lying or you did it. I’d imagine that’s how it would go in 95% of cases
10:15 The crankshaft that drives the oil pump might be robust, but the oil pumps on those motors have been known to fail - or at least become anemic. Plus since they're internally mounted, maintenance, diagnosis and repair means your pulling the top half of the motor and the timing cover. Huge PITA when they used to be externally mounted and easily accessible. Your tear-down is showing that the reputation for being "reliable" or "bulletproof" lies mostly in the block and less in build quality and QA/QC...but of course we knew that 😉. Like the tear-downs, keep it up!
I don't think the oil pump was ever externally mounted. The old-school gen I and II small blocks had the oil pump mounted on the rearmost main cap, which was much more easily accessibly, I'll give you that. They do seem to have been more reliable than the gen III and IV LS pumps as well.

it should never ever happen, where are the quality checks? They fixed it because they know they fucked up big time, and could have cost some one a lot. Its really not ok for a brand new 15k product, potentially dangerous to lives also in drag application
I'm guessing it is because they're Donut. GM knows they need to appear like they go above and beyond with mistakes to ensure that people are confident in continuing to buy LSX engines. It's because of the publicity.
You think they would do that for the average customer or do you think they would just blame the guy with no clout and screw him over? I'm thinking the later.

For the new engine install it as a dyno engine to test out clutches by showing us how slipping the clutch effects the parts / the difference between the different stage clutches out there?

The pushrod is not coming in contact with the camshaft. It sits in the lifter which is coming in contact pushing the pushrod. Y’all left that out in your description at the beginning of the video.
I have what I personally think is the best idea for the extra LSX. You can install it in my 1990 300zx! I recently had an engine mishap where the timing belt shredded while driving. I’m flabbergasted at the MAJOR issues with the build of this $15,000, engine and the guaranteed failure in a short time frame! The tech that “built” the bottom end, made GM look f*uckin terrible, the trash that was on the bearings was bad, but the missing circlip is CATASTROPHIC!! BUT WAIT, NEITHER FAILURE IS JUST $15k, I’ll cover that below….If the wrist pin clip wasn’t missing and they had just dropped the engine in like 99..5% of everyone does….there is NO WAY that GM would cover it they would say it was a tuner mistake or some other BS. The cost of the rebuild which could include, new rod(s), crankshaft, bearings, camshaft and possibly more or even chance of catastrophic failure, so at the absolute low end your at $18k+ for basic rebuild and machining and installation. NOW with the CIRCLIP you not only have CATASTROPHIC damage to engine, and yes I’m saying windowed block completely junked engine BUT you also normally damage/destroy the engine but also other accessories like your new headers, any type of oiling part like oil coolers and filters, cooling system, engine mounts, and possibly transmission and wiring…..so now your talking about $5k-$15k plus for everything that GM won’t be warrantying with the new $15k engine! Let alone the Labor costs and Downtime…. And the AVERAGE JOE isn’t going to be able to keep old engine AND get NEW ENGINE AND PARTS for damaged engine! All because someone wasn’t doing their job

Nice job contacting GM with those issues. Those engines are supposed to be assembled by a single employee. They’re supposed to sign their name to every engine that goes out. Apparently 15'000 isn't enough to ask for quality product these days.
Not surprised
What gets me is you KNOW that engine was gone over special since its a business deal with Donut.
If they can't even get a good motor, what are you and I going to get?
It was either built on a Monday or Friday. Or the boss said “why’s it taking so long to get this one out?? Wrap it up and send it out”
I love these engine teardown videos that you are doing. Honestly makes working on engines a little less intimidating
"It'll be fine"
_It being "fine"_
Glad you took apart this engine.
Watching Nolan become such an awesome host and always being kind, I think he deserves the LSX in the Imperial
he bought it for the 383, unlikely he will swap it out.
These engine teardowns are always my favorite. In depth but still simple for my dumb brain to understand
Agreed, I think they should take the new engine and do another teardown. Always inspect before you expect
Engines are very easy to understand
@MoloneLabe Obviously not if there's a huge mechanical business profiting off people that cannot understand it
That push rod hitting the floor sounded like the intro to Fire Starter....BOOM!!! (3:21)
Wow. If you guys had installed it, fired it up, and blown it up, you would have been screwed. This severely undermines the confidence you get when you buy a crate engine, let alone from the manufacturer. I realize that mistakes happen, but damn. I'm stunned.
It would still be covered under warranty but it would be wasted time for sure.
Crate engines usually have a short warranty
Usually like 12 months and if you turbo it or supercharge it you better make sure they specifically stated the engine is meant for it or theyll tell you to pound sand@Blue_Flame_Raptor
@@spadeykins9114 Good luck providing blown engine was manufacturer fault..
This is a fun idea
But there isn't a replacement. Slap that same turbo on the lsx and see what happens. XD
real mean turbo their ls
but that lsx454 is specifically made by Chevrolet Performance to be boosted
@@lucysmith4242 real men twincharge their LS.
I worked at Caterpiller for a year in one of their engine assembly factories
Someone forgot a clip like that on one of the C18s.
Good to know. Take apart your brand new thing and report the issues to the manufacturer to get a discount that pays for the inspection. Lets go.
What if you take it apart and it's perfect? Now the labor is on you.
When you buy a new engine, you expect the parts of that 15 thousand dollar v8 to all be in good shape lol
What if you take it apart, find out the clip is missing and the bearings are ruined, call GM and because you’re not a RUclips channel they tell you’re lying or you did it. I’d imagine that’s how it would go in 95% of cases
Well, take it apart and show it to 8 million people. GM did a PR move with the free engine.
@@mentat1341 It was more of a satirical statement to emphasize the absurdity that you cant even trust "new" products anymore.
You should definitely open up the second LSX too
10:15 The crankshaft that drives the oil pump might be robust, but the oil pumps on those motors have been known to fail - or at least become anemic.
Here is a build for you and it’s one I’ve been wanting to do.
Put the LSX in an Infiniti M45x S. You get a big body V8 Japanese luxury vehicle with all kinds of bells and whistles and an ATESSA AWD system. With some work you can make it an ATESSA ETS system and you will have one hell of a vehicle. Legendary LS engine married to the legendary ATESSA ETS in a Japanese big body… what could be better?
It’s unique and hasn’t been done before. These cars fly right under the radar.

GM sending out bad parts??? WHAT A SHOCK!
Got to keep the rep up!
They have been known for flawed creates for well over 10 years! (I'm not a Chebby guy so I don't know the history more than that.... Wouldn't surprise me)
unfortunately every brand sends out bad crate motors. it depends on your luck really
I had to replace knock sensors in my 5.3 LS twice do to bad GM sensors. That was cool.
With the crank bearing being trashed you should really check that the crank is straight and have the line bore checked on the block and crank caps. Something's not happy in that set up the way it sits now.
More likely a chip in the oil hole.
It's modern GM quality. You're lucky if you make it 30k miles and it hasn't broken something. I've seen several brand new GMs with less than 5,000 miles break down, including entire engine and/or transmission replacements.
2002 GMC Sierra 1500 HD 6.0 4l80e 4x4, third transmission, 4th t case, 4th torque converter, endless u joints less than 200k, no can corners, no rockers, no bed sides, undercoated every year and grind and prime the rest after every winter, not a single button in the cap is readable, speedo doesn't work, fuel gauge is tuck at a half tank, battery gauge doesn't work, had to replace lifters twice, but I've never once had problems from the motor other than the tick, once this truck finally blows up or breaks in half I'll never have another Chevy made past the mid 90s pieces of shit every way you can think

I have my retired 2013 Tacoma sitting in my auxiliary building collecting dust. I also have an LS3 sitting not far from the Tacoma collecting dust. Yanked the engine from my buddies corvette after he was rear ended by a semi that had overheated his brakes and completely totaled the car. At least the engine was salvageable. It sat in my buddies shed for over 2 years before he sold it to me. He needed a few thousand bucks quick fast and in a hurry, so I got the engine for what I think was a steal. Its been sitting in my auxiliary building for well over a year now and Im really thinking about putting it in my ole 13 Tacoma.
What’s inside a 15,00 dollar motor? About 3500 dollar in parts 😂
Ok genius make an engine for 15,000 that’ll outperform that.
Totally how design, manufacturing and assembly works.
As well as some parts that are engineered differently to typical LS engines for greater strength. Hence why it’s an LSX.
Find me an LSX454 for 3500💀
@@lamp7746 I can give you a dozen on ebay that have more performance out of the box for 5k or less. 7.4L NA pushrod making 476hp is a joke. The real reason you buy this is forced induction setups. If you want an engine that can make 1000hp without internal parts then I think LSX is a very good option.
Thank you to GM to honor the repair and correct it with a proper block.(still check it) if I had a spare big block I would do a Donut Special and make a go kart out of it and SEND IT
I was thinking Time Attack Catfish Camaro, but yeah a single seat Kart-O-Death would be pretty insane!

LSX CHANG LI
I just lost my confidence in GM. They used to be reliable.
Here I was just today thinking "I haven't heard anything about that Ranger in a minute, I wonder how the build is coming along?" And here we are.
What should you do with the next LSX? There are so many options!
-LS swap the money pit miata
LS swap Joe Webber's 300Z
Drop it in the Catfish Camaro
Build a custom motorcycle around it (it would probably have to be a three or four wheeler)
Put it in a boat
How about the drift BMW?
Or as someone else said up there, keep that LSX as an emergency should anything happen to the Ranger.
Which considering we're talking about:
1. A Baja Truck
2. The Donut Crew
Anything can happen
They should put it in the drift BMW.

It is pretty embarrassing.
Is GMs engine manufacturing as badly organized as Boeing?
I'm guessing it is because they're Donut. GM knows they need to appear like they go above and beyond with mistakes to ensure that people are confident in continuing to buy LSX engines. It's because of the publicity.
It’s 1000% due to the channels size

An extra lsx. Sounds like it's time for a monster Miata.
Great video! Shows the importance in a teardown even on a crate engine.

I just want to point out, since I've seen no other comments pointing it out, that a C8 corvette does NOT have an LS. Not sure who messed that up, but the last corvette with an LS came off the production line over a decade ago.
The LT is still an LS-based engine. It's the same architecture, just modernized.
@@americansmark no it isn't, completely different everything. That's like saying an LS is based on a gen 1 small block. No, it sure isn't.
@@christianmcpheeters8638 the entire design is based on the L92 LS-based HD engine. It is the Gen V small block, a continuation of the Gen 3 and Gen 4 LS engines.
Just cuz it has some fancy new letters doesn't make it all new.
@@americansmark except you're literally wrong. Completely different head design, different block design, direct injection, different crankshaft design, different rod lengths, literally not a single part of an LS or an LT is interchangeable. Not a single part. So how on earth are you saying it's the same architecture? It's not. The only common trait is that it's a pushrod V8 that General motors made.

I’m pretty sure the lsx is meant to handle insane amounts of boost, you should boost the new one and just keep upping the psi until it throws a rod into outer space
