After what you found, I'd be measuring the bores, getting a straight edge on the deck and heads, checking the ring gap, and weighing each of the pistons. And I'd do the same on the new engine too. Excellent video, please do keep us updated on anything else you find, and the same with the new engine too.

I have a 1971 VW Bug project and ordered an engine built from a "reputable" shop here in Arizona. The engine was supposedly brand new, 0 miles. I didn't get to run it until a year after I purchased it. During this year gap, the shop closed "due to Covid". When I finally ran the engine, it blew up after about 15 minutes of running. Turns out the builder forgot to install the circlips on one of the pistons.

I worked for the detail department at a GM dealership and the amount of brand new vehicle's that come in with issues are astonishing! One in particular was a brand new Yukon, price tag was like $112k. As i was cleaning it for delivery i found a quarter sized hole in the lower portion of the passenger door. At the assembly plant they just threw on a door that was suppose to have a trim option, but never installed the trim so the holes for the trim were exposed to the elements. Should have seen the look on the salesman face when i told him about it. Customer had already been waiting 6 months for it, within an hour the customer was there and eventually said they didn't want the Yukon anymore.

I think I had to align one once, my buddy had to fix a Camaro Conv top that wouldnt open, and some Tahoes that had the wrong modules in the seat. That was about it. Hyundai OTOH, that was a weekly ordeal finding one that didnt have a QC issue. Clamps not properly on hoses being a major one for awhile. Seen a few that had bent pins in harnesses, so whole CAN systems were down. Had a GV80 3.5 that they didnt drill the hole for the boost recirculation valve. That one was bad.

These new engines are built on production lines that the manufacturers keep going at full speed and these problems happen all the time. Just the torque converter itself is sheer genius. Using literally nothing but fluid to connect the engine to the transmission. AKA no mechanical part/connection is used. I worked at Caterpiller for a year in one of their engine assembly factories
Someone forgot a clip like that on one of the C18s. When it went to hot test the piston head came loose and chunks of the piston ended up blowing through the engine block.

Love how they are giving you a new engine to clean up after their tracks, hoping you guys wouldn't release the footage. Well done for not holding back! Informed the public of a possible easy money tactic since race motors blow up all the time and they'd get away with the premature engine failure without being questioned. Now they have got to pull up their socks, at least momentarily.

I don't know about hoping they woudln't release the footage, they are just doing the best they can to make them "whole" without question. Giving you a new one doesn't leave any room for doubt. I guess you're hoping for them to announce that they failed over loudspeakers? It would be nice if they said something about it being unacceptable and how they're going to improve QC.

10:15 The crankshaft that drives the oil pump might be robust, but the oil pumps on those motors have been known to fail - or at least become anemic. Plus since they're internally mounted, maintenance, diagnosis and repair means your pulling the top half of the motor and the timing cover. Huge PITA when they used to be externally mounted and easily accessible.
Your tear-down is showing that the reputation for being "reliable" or "bulletproof" lies mostly in the block and less in build quality and QA/QC...but of course we knew that 😉. Like the tear-downs, keep it up!

I don't think the oil pump was ever externally mounted. The old-school gen I and II small blocks had the oil pump mounted on the rearmost main cap, which was much more easily accessibly, I'll give you that. They do seem to have been more reliable than the gen III and IV LS pumps as well.

I’m flabbergasted at the MAJOR issues with the build of this $15,000, engine and the guaranteed failure in a short time frame! The tech that “built” the bottom end, made GM look f*uckin terrible, the trash that was on the bearings was bad, but the missing circlip is CATASTROPHIC!! BUT WAIT, NEITHER FAILURE IS JUST $15k, I’ll cover that below….If the wrist pin clip wasn’t missing and they had just dropped the engine in like 99..5% of everyone does….there is NO WAY that GM would cover it they would say it was a tuner mistake or some other BS. The cost of the rebuild which could include, new rod(s), crankshaft, bearings, camshaft and possibly more or even chance of catastrophic failure, so at the absolute low end your at $18k+ for basic rebuild and machining and installation. NOW with the CIRCLIP you not only have CATASTROPHIC damage to engine, and yes I’m saying windowed block completely junked engine BUT you also normally damage/destroy the engine but also other accessories like your new headers, any type of oiling part like oil coolers and filters, cooling system, engine mounts, and possibly transmission and wiring…..so now your talking about $5k-$15k plus for everything that GM won’t be warrantying with the new $15k engine! Let alone the Labor costs and Downtime…. And the AVERAGE JOE isn’t going to be able to keep old engine AND get NEW ENGINE AND PARTS for damaged engine! All because someone wasn’t doing their job

I’m pretty sure the lsx is meant to handle insane amounts of boost, you should boost the new one and just keep upping the psi until it throws a rod into outer space

Nice job contacting GM with those issues. Those engines are supposed to be assembled by a single employee. They’re supposed to sign their name to every engine that goes out. It looks like the guy that built your engine must’ve been drunk. I’m glad to hear that GM took care of you. I hope you take the new engine apart also Just in case. Nice work!

We put a brand new LS3 crate into a s13 before and similar stuff happened. Called GM and sent some pictures in. We got a new replacement engine without too much back and forth BS though. The guy that I talked to named Ryan I think, he didn't sound surprise at all when I stated that there's rod knock in a 50 miles motor.

Absolutely amazing reaction from chevy that we aren’t talking about. Sure it’s probably partially because of the status you guys have but paying for everything and a whole new engine is like bravo from chevy.

Can you do a video where you compare buying a new vehicle with the top trim vs buying a lower trim level and specing it out the way you want? The new ford maverick comes to mind as all the trim levels are relatively cheap. I'm a truck guy so I was thinking an fx4 or tremor package vs just buying the bottom trim level and going with aftermarket suspension, interior, etc. Thanks, you guys are amazing!
