  • Ok this is restoration for use not an art piece, I did not restore it to new condition, but it is very usable now, Berylco brass hammers are still expensive, they start used at $50.00 and go up!

That looks great DJ. That's an expensive hammer. It's nice to have a soft faced hammer in the shop.

DJ, Google in grinding on Berylium tools. You'll see it is very dangerous to grind on these tools. Take care, buddy. I want to see more of your videos. So don't be grinding on anymore berylium tools!

I agree, I hope he was wearing a respirator . We used these when I worked in the oil field in environments where there was natural gas and the chance of fire.

@Rusty_ok , we used the berylium pipe wrenches and hammers on the railroad when there couldn't be any sparks. We were not allowed to repair or modify any of these tools. They were extremely expensive and were kept in their own tool box.

@@dolrr54 interesting. I did not know the railroad had those kinds of environments. I worked on big natural gas compressors and we had lots of brass and beryllium tools. I still have a 4lb brass hammer with an aluminum handle that I made in the machine shop. The other guys named it the “persuader”.

Nice hammer, Berylco Beryllium Copper is 1.8% Beryllium, Copper beryllium alloy containing less than 2.5% beryllium (in copper) is not designated as a carcinogen. Nothing wrong with a little safety but it's not as dangerous as some of the Online Safety Sallys claim.

You should not have been grinding on a berylium tool without a high-quality mask . Berylium dust is a very hazardous material to breathe in. That is NOT a brass hammer. You need to be very careful about cleaning up the dust around your sanders, too.

@djstoolrestorations DJ, I was a machinist for the BNSF Railroad, and we were told never to grind or sand on any of the tools the Carmen had for working on LPG or flammable cars. It was also a safety violation, and you could be in trouble for doing so. I freaked out when I saw you sanding on the hammer head, and that's why I sent you those messages. I would suggest that you carefully clean up around you sanders to get rid of any of the Berylium dust that's there. I enjoy your videos and I would like to keep watching them in the future. So take care buddy and have a good one!😉👌

Beryllium copper is toxic and non sparking. That shim was probably beryllium, also.
