It’s brutal but inevitable, he’s got more empathy and he’s more emotionally in tune than his fellow gang members, and just like any human, he really is afraid of dying
The way he looks after he says I'm afraid is the saddest part of it all. He looks so confused and doesn't know what to do or where to go with the rest of his life that's about to come to an end. I love this game so much.
He is not afraid of death itself, he's afraid because he doesn't know what's gonna happen afterlife, he knew his life was full of sins, and bad decisions but at the end he died as an honor and loyal person
PinkPotatoe 777 idk, I feel like he’s afraid to die because he’s never thought about his own death that deeply. He figured he’d die an outlaw’s death at the bad end of a gun barrel and that would have been that. Instead, he’s dying slowly because of the decisions he made, and now he sees that those decisions have repercussions that he never considered before. I think he’s also afraid because he never figured his death would matter, but now he sees that death is more than a personal loss of life, it means other people lose things that you were a part of as well. That’s why he tried so hard to keep Eagle Flies from doing that stupid shit(spoilers). That’s why he tries so hard to get John, Abigail, and Jack out of the life. In the end he feared not for his life or his afterlife, but for the lives of the people close to him, because when he dies they would be swept up by the chaos that the gang is going toward.
@@eggboi8475 I have, and john while a good protagonist, doesn't even come close to arthur, in terms of depth, nuance expression and character writing. A big part of it has to do with how much rdr2 completely obliterates the first game in terms of detail.

Her life was complete but she couldn’t bare the thought of suffering till her last breath and she did eventually. There are worse things then death. Be grateful when your death is quick and without pain.
I love the delivery of the “I’m afraid” line and how it seems almost accidental. Before that he’s mostly being just kinda nonchalant and casual about what he thinks. Even laughing. But then he lets out a little bit of how he FEELS with that look on his face that he almost immediately tries to fix back again while Sister is talking. This is one of the only times he does this in the game and it’s just so genuine and real for the kind of person he is.

Call me crazy, but I would actually like a Red Dead 3 with an even older Jack as the protagonist. [SPOILERS FOR FIRST GAME BELOW] Maybe he got caught after killing Edgar Ross and has been in prison for a bit. Hell the first mission could be a good ol' fashion prison break, like the rumored intro mission to the new Red Dead Online. The time period would be right around the start of prohibition, so there's plenty of criminal elements. I still feel like the there's potential with Jack, like his story isn't over yet. He would be the last of his kind. A symbol of a time long past. The last real outlaw. He too needs his redemption, so he can honor his father's legacy. Also, I would love to have Nate Johns as the main villain. After all, we hear about him throughout the first RDR, and he's technically the reason for John's death, since he pressed the FBI to clean up the state. It would be cool if he was a big, scary villain, someone imposing like a country version of Al Capone. Anyway, those are my thoughts and ramblings for what they're worth.

At 0:29 you can hear Arthur being to lie and say I'm alright but he stops himself and decides to just be honest, I've played through the game about 5 times now and never noticed
It's very ironic yet sad at the same time that a man who practily grew up in gun fights and fighting for his life is afraid of knowing his time is up, which is understandable I understand that it's completely different, but I just thought it says something in a weird way
That's the way it is for Arthur isn't it? If you live as a gunslinger and you'll get gunned down right? So I think he wanted to go down guns blazing knowing he had no time left while helping John get away. But then a certain RAT decided to ruin that for him.
@Toxic Anoxic You can still die facing west in a gunfight though? but in all seriousness Arthur died watching the sunrise maybe symbolizing how much he turned his life around as an outlaw. Instead of dying facing west and looking at the sunset, clinging to the past and remembering the good times, he can instead take comfort in the fact that he allowed many others (or atleast John) to have a better future, as the sun rises to a new day. Well that's my take on it at least.
I think it's the certainty of it. In a gunfight, you COULD die but he probably knows he's a damn good shot so he likes his odds. With TB in the games year though....That's it. Nothing can be done. Arthur knows he is going to die very soon and there isn't a damn thing he can do about it. That is the true tragedy of Arthur Morgan.

Aside from the “I’m afraid” quote I love what she tells him. “Take a gamble that love exists and do a loving act” those are seriously words we should all live by
The little nod right before he says : "I'm afraid" really makes it hit harder. He's finally willing and wanting to admit his fear. Ready to let someone (and us) see Arthur Morgan the man, versus the outlaw.
The main characters of Red Dead are something. One character is fighting for what he believes while the other one is fighting for what he is told to believe in.
@@potatoandothers1067I'm not talking about their morals. I'm talking about their beliefs. I'm speaking from the perspective of Arthur from the beginning of Red Dead Redemption 2 and from the perspective of John from Red Dead 1. The John from RDDR1 fought for his family and had morals. Arthur from RDR2 fought partially because of Dutch's beliefs and what he thought was true. Throughout the story, specifically in Chapters 4-6 you start seeing Arthur start to doubt Dutch's words.
After watching this video several times, I realized the reason why it's so heartbreaking. After Arthur tells her he has TB, he first explains how painful his life has been, trying to imply that he had hoped to experience happiness as well, some time in the future. But now that he has TB, his life is cut short; along with any hopes of him ever experiencing that happiness. This hopelessness is exacerbated when the sister reminds him that life is also full of beauty and love. He can't hold the feeling of hopelessness inside anymore and then sighs, "What am I gonna do now?" in despair. The sister then tries to cheer him up by suggesting that he could help someone; helping seems to make him happy. Clearly that doesn't cheer him up. He doesn't understand why. Then, he thinks it's probably because "He doesn't believe in nothin' ". Once again, the sister counters his argument saying that many times, she too didn't believe in anything. But then she meets someone like him! Arthur feels somewhat cheered up. Logically, her argument makes sense. He's even impressed with how smart she is. But he still feels down. Then comes the "aha" moment. He still feels sad because... he is afraid.
I remember starting RDR2 and being disappointed I wasn't playing the O.G. John Marston. Some great writing meant I was equally if not more invested in Arthur by the end of the game, this scene and a couple of others brought a lump to the throat of this grown man I'm not gonna lie. Thanks for taking the time to upload this scene.
2:34 that shit gets me all the time with misty eyes. Ain’t nothing more heartfelt when a person admits being afraid of death or any outcomes in life. This probably the first video game that ever had me cried and felt more connected to the character of Arthur Morgan. Well done rockstar well done...👏🏽👏🏽
This is such a great story, and to see arthur's moral anguish show in this scene just from such a simple phrase and face really shows the beauty of this game. Please make more of this rockstar
The sheer emotion and sadness just in his face sends chills in the feelings. It’s amazing a digital character as such can feel so real with emotion and heart. That’s what a 10/10 game offers I guess
We're all afraid, in some small way. In our lonely moments. In our most darkest and desperate times. But it passes. Then you realize you had nothing to fear to begin with.
I'm currently 52% done with the game and I am in NO hurry to finish whatsoever. I know that the day that I finish it will be one of the saddest days of my life. Just playing as this character you bond with him and you feel like they become a part of you. I'm 90% sure I'm gonna cry when I finish this game. And I'm 100% sure my girlfriend will laugh at me lol. But it's okay. Gangstas cry too. Thank you so much to Rockstar Games for this masterpiece of a game. For giving us a character that we love and admire and respect. Red Dead Redemption 2 definitely has my vote for best game ever made. By far. I've played many a games in my days. Never played one with a story like this one. Simply beautiful. Emotional. This game has it all. Ups, downs. In betweens. I love it.
It's the sorrow in his eyes that makes this scene heartbreaking. Few games manage to evoke this degree of emotion. They really nailed the facial animations in this one.
That exact look on his face after he says, "I'm afraid." The camera stays focused on him as he looks up and around, clearly sucking back tears because of the other presence nearby. The strong right hand man and peacekeeper of Dutch's gang, reduced to a coughing, weak mess. It's the realization of degradation, and it burns me something fierce.
So much said in those two seconds of a look. Incredible that so much emotion is portrayed in a video game. My favorite moment in the entire game. Good to know I'm not alone in that!
There are few games that make me feel someone’s absence as much as Arthur’s. I thought i was ready to play as John but I missed the interaction arthur had with people and it made me want To play it again. I will at some point, but I need to get myself ready for it again.
One great lesson I have learnt from this amazing game. Sorrow, fear, and worries are of-course the inevitable when you know you are dying, but the knowledge gives you a gift, gift of courage to do the right things, to use the remaining days wisely. Right now, I wish to know how much time i have left so that i won't waste a single moment on something meaningless.
I think the thing that is most compelling about this scene is that all of us are afraid of death and sure he is much closer to it than most of us, but y’all ever have that moment, that time where it hits you really hard, that thought that “one day I will die, that’s it, no more life, I will fade with time and my memories won’t live on, I will be nothing” so when he says “I’m afraid” it hits hard because even with suicidal thoughts and depression, everyone fears death, biological and psychologically we are being that want to survive and live, and we fear death because it is oh so prevalent and yet so unknown, we fear the unknown, so when he says he’s afraid, we perfectly understand him
The beard really solidifies that Arthur has been through alot. The beard represents times. Without it, the facial expression doesn't really feel that powerful. But that's just me.
Sure Arthur had his moments where he wasn’t the best person he could really be, but that doesn’t dispute the fact that deep down Arthur is a kind hearted man who wants to do right. If only we had people as kind as Arthur during our time.
I got RDR2 On November, It's February I have yet to transition to John. I did all strangers quests with Arthur. Did the dinosaur bones with Arthur with a glitch and heard you're alright boy with Arthur. Its hard to let go, Arthur reminds of me of my grandpa.
Supreme Bape Hype same here, broski. I did not want to let go of Arthur. This game really messed with my damn feelings. Never have I ever felt attached to a fictional video game character in my life.
I beat the game for the third time last night. When Arthur died, his final ride.. I cried just as hard as I did the first time. Never thought I'd connect with a goddamn video game character so much.
I have to say that in all my years of playing and Beating Games, Arthur Morgan was one of the Absolute Best Characters I’ve played as. This game made me cry when I found out I had TB, Tell Sister I’m Dying and Had 1 Last ride to Confront Dutch. It made me reflect on what we make the Character to be and I made Arthur the Best man he can be
The beard makes it all the more better. It looks as if he’s growing in wisdom and piety as he realizes he’s near his grave. It’s all flared out, mature, and beautiful looking. He recognizes the irony of life, and its bitterness, but acknowledges his own fear in diving into a new life, a life of the unknown-death. Something we will never know about until we cross that threshold ourselves, and forfeit this earthly realm. I love this game.
I think having a beard in chapter 5 is right for Arthur. It represents his maturity and honor. For me, the longer his beard grew, the less violent/more honorable he became.
Never in my life I though I would find such a sincere and honest piece of advice in a Rockstar game "Take a gamble that love exists and do a loving act". Call it morality, being good, Zeus or Horus. I call it the belief in the existence of an ultimate truth that we can´t quite understan I call it God, act as if exists and be good, and what does "being good" mean? Well, what about sacrifice our well-being to help those in need. Jesus is the iconic characterization of the ideal man, someone who dies, the ultimate sacrifice, to save the lives of others. "A new commandment I give you:Love one another. As I have loved you, so also you must love one another." Do a loving act. Give meaning to your life.
When arthur was talking with sister calderon at emerald station near the end of the game, and when he said “I’m afraid” the look and emotion and pain in his eyes felt real almost leaping past the uncanny valley effect

I love how he looks to other side trying not to cry after saying "i´m afraid". Such a beatiful detail
Aside from the “I’m afraid” quote I love what she tells him. “Take a gamble that love exists and do a loving act” those are seriously words we should all live by
This scene actually made me cry, bc the main reason is that arthur deserved a longer life than the one that he had to suffer through.
"Take a gamble that love exists." Some people just don't realize how difficult that actually is.
The little nod right before he says : "I'm afraid" really makes it hit harder. He's finally willing and wanting to admit his fear. Ready to let someone (and us) see Arthur Morgan the man, versus the outlaw.
The voice acting and facial expressions are amazing and make it that much more emotional. Rockstar Games will always be my favorite game developer.
The main characters of Red Dead are something. One character is fighting for what he believes while the other one is fighting for what he is told to believe in.
Aren't both characters fighting for what they believe in though? They both have morals.
@@IGamingStation I think Arthur's beliefs stayed the same and that Dutch just became corrupt.
"Take a gamble that love exists and do a loving act."
This game is a masterpiece.
I watched this same scene with him clean shaven. Even the way he touches his face is different. This game is honestly brilliant.
It takes a big man to admit to another person that you are afraid. Arthur was a real man. an honorable man. a good man
Oooooooff those puppy eyes when he says he’s afraid just tears my heart in two
I love Arthur
Something about the way he says "I'm afraid" breaks my heart and makes me tear up a little every time.
Rdr 2 just strengthened my conviction some video games are far more than mere entertainment media. They're an undying achievement of human genius
Watching this while listening to "If I go, I'm going" brings a multitude of sadness levels I have never felt before. 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
Been needing to hear this scene lately. I think we all could take a gamble that love exists and do a loving act. Shit's too short, man.
This is such a great story, and to see arthur's moral anguish show in this scene just from such a simple phrase and face really shows the beauty of this game. Please make more of this rockstar
Arthur became one of the greatest video game characters in just one game, that other characters take more than a trilogy across 10+ years
The sheer emotion and sadness just in his face sends chills in the feelings. It’s amazing a digital character as such can feel so real with emotion and heart.
That’s what a 10/10 game offers I guess
We're all afraid, in some small way. In our lonely moments. In our most darkest and desperate times. But it passes. Then you realize you had nothing to fear to begin with.
God stabbed me in the heart first time I heard “I’m afraid”
Made me cry. Cause it’s true. Everyone is afraid whatever is gonna happen next cause we don’t know.
"I still don't believe in nothin"
"Often, I don't either, and then I meet someone like you."
The juxtaposition is beautiful there
I'm currently 52% done with the game and I am in NO hurry to finish whatsoever.
This is one of the best-acted scenes in any video game that I've ever seen. Roger Clark is a madman.
The way his voice breaks a little as he says "I'm afraid." ;;;-;;; Oh... my heart...
" I tried....in the end.....I did"
-Arthur Morgan
There are few games that make me feel someone’s absence as much as Arthur’s. I thought i was ready to play as John but I missed the interaction arthur had with people and it made me want
To play it again.
Right now, I wish to know how much time i have left so that i won't waste a single moment on something meaningless.
dude you just hear the fear in arthur's voice, that's just sad
When I first heard arthur cough I knew what was coming. So I kept saying “no” while crying 😭
I think the thing that is most compelling about this scene is that all of us are afraid of death and sure he is much closer to it than most of us, but y’all ever have that moment, that time where it hits you really hard, that thought that “one day I will die, that’s it, no more life, I will fade with time and my memories won’t live on, I will be nothing” so when he says “I’m afraid” it hits hard because even with suicidal thoughts and depression, everyone fears death, biological and psychologically we are being that want to survive and live, and we fear death because it is oh so prevalent and yet so unknown, we fear the unknown, so when he says he’s afraid, we perfectly understand him
It is rare, especially this day in age, that storytelling is this good.
You can really hear the fear and regret in his voice
The beard really solidifies that Arthur has been through alot. The beard represents times. Without it, the facial expression doesn't really feel that powerful. But that's just me.
Arthur sure was good.
Man this is enough to make a man cry sucks that he had to die
When he says hes afraid my heart broke
Sure Arthur had his moments where he wasn’t the best person he could really be, but that doesn’t dispute the fact that deep down Arthur is a kind hearted man who wants to do right. If only we had people as kind as Arthur during our time.
We really need another story about Arthur 😭
I got RDR2 On November, It's February I have yet to transition to John. I did all strangers quests with Arthur. Did the dinosaur bones with Arthur with a glitch and heard you're alright boy with Arthur. Its hard to let go, Arthur reminds of me of my grandpa.
Supreme Bape Hype same here, broski. I did not want to let go of Arthur. This game really messed with my damn feelings. Never have I ever felt attached to a fictional video game character in my life.
"I'm Afraid"
Those 2 words man got me...😭😭
And his face was...sad..it got me man...😭😭
I beat the game for the third time last night. When Arthur died, his final ride.. I cried just as hard as I did the first time. Never thought I'd connect with a goddamn video game character so much.
That cough that damn cough...it reminds me of the way my grandpa...coughed.
I have to say that in all my years of playing and Beating Games, Arthur Morgan was one of the Absolute Best Characters I’ve played as. This game made me cry when I found out I had TB, Tell Sister I’m Dying and Had 1 Last ride to Confront Dutch. It made me reflect on what we make the Character to be and I made Arthur the Best man he can be
This look of Arthur fits this scene perfectly.
A huge kick in the feels.
As unmanly as it sounds... I teared up when he said " I'm afraid "
Its alright to cry
I think having a beard in chapter 5 is right for Arthur. It represents his maturity and honor. For me, the longer his beard grew, the less violent/more honorable he became.
Hurts even more when you can relate very deeply to Arthur, when he turns and says "I'm afraid."
I was scared but when John escaped and had a chance I was ready for the next step
“I’m afraid.”
And that was when I knew he was the best protagonist ever made.
He says he’s afraid yet smirks in his final moments and smirks in the afterlife aswell
Never in my life I though I would find such a sincere and honest piece of advice in a Rockstar game
"Take a gamble that love exists and do a loving act".
As I have loved you, so also you must love one another."
Do a loving act. Give meaning to your life.
Somehow the beard makes it even more sad. I don't know why.
he goes from laughing to breaking my heart in a flash
Is it just me when Arthur tells her about his family he reminds me of Forrest Gump
Lol same.
My momma always told life was like a box of tonics
This is a history of a man who lost everything he had... ,he gave everything he had...
The nun is the woman that John Marston talks to in the, "I know you", mission in Red Dead Redemtion 1
Arthur is one of my favourite video game character ever
When arthur was talking with sister calderon at emerald station near the end of the game, and when he said “I’m afraid” the look and emotion and pain in his eyes felt real almost leaping past the uncanny valley effect
