How beautifully you sang this wonderful melody. Thank you very much!!! For me, you are the most favorite RUclips guitarists. I wish you success and creative success.
Thank you! You words are too kind...I will tell Mina. Seriously, it's just old dad trying to goof around before she doesn't want to hang out with me when she becomes a teenager. Mina is composing some songs for our band and all. I guess eventually we have to be doing our own original songs one day. Yet doing song covers sure has been a good experience for us. By the way, thanks for the suggestion/ request. This is indeed a very cool song! We love it too!
Hontouni? The young people in Japan like older music nowadays? I didn't know. ;p One thing i know, I am not too familiar with new songs and all, and feel that the older tunes seem more timeless. they have proven to be timeless!
I did it, it's wonderful! .. Thank you very much. It was great to see Gerry McGee everywhere. I look at Mina & Dad's cover every day and always listen in my commute. I will continue to do so. Video editing is also evolving and there are many things to see, so I'm looking forward to it. I'm really thankful to you.
Yes, we did it!!!! Thanks for your suggestion!!! My part is easy, cos doing Don Wilson's strumming is fun!!! I thought it'd be a bit tough for Mina, as this song actually requires a bit of a technique despite it sounded simple. That's why McGee was a master, because he made this simple tune sound awesome, and added subtle things in it. Lucky Mina has been shredding and Neo Soul stuff so it was manageable. I specifically suggested her to make it sound...how should I put it. i asked her to play the song with feelings, and try to touch the heart of others, just like how Gerry McGee did, even after all these years! We love this 1990 Japan live version the most. It is really cool. It is a simple song, and that's what makes it a bit challenging. Mina did ok, but McGee is McGee! Even for my part, I don't even come close to Don Wilson's signature strumming!!! But, we will keep on trying! You listen to us when u commute? Wow! If you use earphones, or perhaps you listen to us when you drive, I hope the audio quality is ok. We didn't know in the past and the quality of our previous videos from 1 year ago was only okay if you play it through built-in speakers of mobile phones. Now we try to make sure it'd sound okay even if played in a car, external speakers or headphones... ;-)
@@PangPangguitarjam Welcome! There are two versions that I like, one by a group called The Sounds from 1963 or so, and one by "Tom Lake", you'll find both on RUclips.
thank you. I don't know what has happened to Mina too. She DID improve quite a bit in terms of her dexterity. I must say it might have something to do with heavy metal songs. When COVID -19 first hit and we had the lockdown, we didn't have much to do so we started goofing around with metal songs and Jimi Hendrix' songs. She picked it up quite fast and I had a hard time trying to keep up. Then we never gave up on surf rock of course, and when she started playing surf songs again (especially recently), she is using new techniques and I guess new understanding of what to do with her fingers and speed and what to do with her fingers on the fretboard. I specifically ask her to try understanding how McGee and Nokie played live on stage, cos these two masters always did amazing things more on stage when performing live. About the metal songs, back then, I thought it was time for her to move on and learn/try some other genres of music, and it proved to be quite beneficial.
Well done! The audio quality is great. The Teles were unexpected but sounded amazing. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Thanks for sharing this video with us! Hmmm, a 7 series limo… sounds good. Perhaps the Cotton Kids need to hire a chauffeur. Give Old Dad a break! 😁
Thanks Jim! Mina says she wants to play more surf songs with humbucker guitars, or at least P90s. Manchurian Beat is one of the few songs that doesn't require a whammy bar so she chose to play it with her new love, a Silverskull Tele which i have been trying to get her for quite some time. I tried several countries nearby. They all said they had it (but it's a model from 2014) so they didn't know what they were saying. Took the money then told us they didn't have it in stock. Good thing I asked local good friends to process the online shopping thing so it was not too bad to get a refund and all. Then our drummer Jennifer found her one in December....hahaha...we never thought of using a Tele to play surf tunes much in the past...but after seeing Nokie using a Tele and it sounded good, we thought why not. Of course, our Teles have no whammy bar so either we do other tricks or have to use another guitar. And I think the Teles Nokie used wasn't equipped with single coil pickups. A 7 series Limo is nice, but the one I looked at had 4 seats despite it was stretched. So i still have to be driving. hahaha!
@@PangPangguitarjam A hard working musician deserves to have a chauffeured ride. Think “Drive my Car,” by The Beatles. 😁😎 If you & Mina don’t mind my asking, what effects did you use with the Teles? They sounded amazing and the surf vibe was evident. Thanks!
@@jimrichards5181 hahaha... I am the chauffeur these days. Long time ago, we had someone to drive us. U wouldn't believe how gas money more than doubled, cos we live in a small town, after dropping us off, the car would be driven back to a "home base", to avoid being baked under the sun. So the car would make many short trips daily. Then came the gas bill....hahaha! With Mina's Tele, basically we just try to get the most out of the bridge Humberbucker thicker sound. As for effects, well, very little drive (just coming from the Fender amp, so with quite a bit of reverb, a bit of delay, no chorus, and that's it! Fender Twins Reverb, these songs we are playing these days do not actually require really heavy drip, but if we need it, we use a Surf Rider pedal, or an Oceans 11 pedal. I think a good example of what it sounds like would be from our 10 seconds to heaven video...I think Mina was doing all the guitar parts for the recording. I will double check again next time I go near our rigs. ;-) ruclips.net/video/qbZHAw6hXK4/видео.html
@@PangPangguitarjam I thought the reverb & delay were a great addition to the sound. Twin Reverb…very nice! I’m also not that used to hearing Teles with humbuckers. Great sound! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@@jimrichards5181 Hey Jim, we just got back from our band practice. I was checking on Mina's rig. She said recently she was experimenting a bit and made some changes, since December she says! Instead of using Fender Twin Reverb, she uses our Fender amp as a cab, and in fact, she has been using a VOX preamp, with 40 on gain, level at 80, while bass on 34, mid 80, and treble on 66. She said she made such changes as she found out the Shadows was using the VOX AC30 for Apache. She tried it and it was actually easier to dial in to the tone she wants when playing lead for surf tunes...it's more universal, as it was actually not as easy to replica the tones Nokie and McGee had!!! She said it was my suggestion. I said what?! I am a big fan of the Twin Reverb...she said I told her it was okay to experiment a bit. Hahaha! When we do live gigs, we don't use a VOX amp and it was always a Fender. For me, it'd be pretty easy to dial in to the tone I wanted with a Fender amp (still trying be familiar with an Marshall amp for surf tones). So for Mina, she said she finds it easier to dial in to a tone she likes for playing surf lead, thus the Vox ac30 preamp settings as shown above... Oh shoot. She added a compressor, with sustain on 48, attack on 80, tone on 1 and level on 38. i asked her where she got the idea from. She told me she remembered she was playing with our first multi-effect unit, or JOYO GEM Box II from when she was 7, and she was fiddling with the compressor settings, and didn't know how it worked (me neither) Than one bass player friend was giving our bassist Twinkle some advice on using the compressor so Mina thought she would try it too. Then She has been using Delay (Tape) and subdelay. As for reverb, she uses hall reverb, with reverb time @6.2s, low cut at 63.0Hz and high cut at 2.50kHz, and effect level at 60. So she was using a VOX ac30 preamp lately....🤣 hope this information helps. For some of the surf songs, she simply adds more drive to it and makes it sound not as clean....
I think I know which video you are talking about. I will try to look for those footage. Obviously I didn't take those videos (cos I was playing) and my friends only sent me like fragments of those videos via whatsapp (as there is a time limit of how long those videos can be when sent by whatsapp). Will ask my friends to prepare the original files and see what i can do when them ;-)
hahaha! Like I've said, good music has no boundaries and are timeless. The songs I choose, well, I have to like them, and besides that, there is another factor. You see, it's Mina doing the lead guitar. Sometimes there are songs I like or sound cool, but when she tries it, the "playability" of the song might be low, meaning no fun playing it. Then normally, it'd take her very little time to learn a song (like for Hotel California, it took her like 1 morning and 1 afternoon to learn the whole song, solo too, while it would take me like decades!!!), but if it's a song that takes "longer" than it should, it doesn't mean the song is difficult to learn, but not as much fun to play she says. I let her, cos I believe she has to keep the passion going and whether it's fun to play or lot, it is important after all. So all the songs we chose, I am surprised too they happened to be popular ones in Japan 60 years ago! They are just fun to play, and u can tell from our faces I hope. ;-)))
Mina started playing the guitar when she was almost 7. She learned it at home. I was teaching her a bit at the beginning and mostly I taught her how to learn how to play the guitar by herself. She played during lunch time when i took a nap mostly. She doesn't play with a smartphone. What do you mean by "when she awarded practicing?" ;-)
