Hi guys, I am Alex.
I am an Ukrainian expat who moved to Portugal.
No one in my family ever did any farming, But I discovered that I am very passionate about farming so recently I've purchased this 28 hectares Farm in Central Portugal, with the intention to start a small scale farm raising worms, cattle and sheep.
In this little farm I am also planning to build an off grid home, and be as self sufficient as possible, by growing my own food.
I created this channel to share my journey with the world, The journey of a first generation farmer, that is starting with no prior knowledge and experiences.
That maybe all the mistakes that I will make along this journey, and all the fails maybe will help some of you to learn from my mistake and not make them yourself.
I want to bring value and inspire people who are thinking about farming.
I am not a filmmaker or an editor, I am just a simple guy with a camera.

Hi, Alex. I had no idea that you were Ukrainian. I thought you were Portuguese, because your dad lives nearby. Thank God you got your parents out of Ukraine, and then you were able to leave before the war broke out. I love watching the progress you and your dad are making on the house. Was he a builder in Ukraine? He seems very knowledgeable. One of my favorite things is watching Angelica follow you and your dad around like a puppy. She's so cute. She's the reason I subscribed to your channel. I thought that anyone who treats a sheep so well must be a nice guy. I hope that she will remain a pet once you get other animals for your farm.

Yeah my father wasn't a builder per sa, But we have built few houses for ourselves there over the years :)

I’m Lithuanian but British citizen and I heard that Portugal is very good country for brits to move in to visa -wise, easier residency, etc. My plan is to retire in 20 odd years to a friendly and warm country. I have a house in Italy, in beautiful region but I don’t think I want to retire there. I’m thinking about Portugal although I have never been to this country but I see so many people from different countries moving to Portugal, especially Americans, South Africans and brits. It might be a good choice. But first my plan is to visit it and see what kind of feeling I will get once there. I want to fall in love as you did Alex. You’re doing such a good job and you are an inspiration for many of us. Keep up the good spirit . 😃👍
You'll be most welcomed! If you visit during the low season October to May, without the hordes of tourists, the prices for hotels and AirB&Bs won't be so high.
You've got plenty of time to learn Portuguese, your life in Portugal would be much better...

My husband and I we can totally relate to you. For exactly similar reasons plus to escape communist regime we left Poland 35 years ago, bacame refugees in Italy and then came to Canada.
After 32 years here this is what we always hear from our 3 grownup children; thank you for making this decision many years ago Mom and Dad .

So nice to hear your story, we each have our stories and motivation and it's not easy to leave your home country and start all over, no matter how bad some situations have become.....it's not a wimp, you have thought things over, not just want to be sustainable but really build businesses and a future not only for yourself and your future generation but also for your parents which is very commendable.. You are hardworking, just like your dad, learning new trades, connect to others..expending your horizon. I'm sure you will succeed. Many will follow your journey.. Alex, I loved your story. Was wondering if the war made you move to Portugal. But now I understand better. Now you can look back and realize what great decisions you made wanting to move. I guess the pandemic has really put things in perspective for many people around the world. Even myself who lives in Florida have began to harvest water, plant as many vegetables as I can and raise chickens. I love your story and would welcome more . Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, so since then the people of Ukraine considered it a war. Many men there had to go to the Donetsk and Lugansk regions to fight the Russian invaders, many of them died, others were injured and lost limbs. Alex went to Portugal before the pandemic.

Nice to hear a bit of your story. You may or may not know that in the late 90's begging of 2000 there was a huge flux of Ukrainian immigrants to Portugal , but these days (before the war) due to the economic crisis ,only half choose to stay permanently in Portugal . Still the second large foreign community in Portugal . Just a bit of info . Take care

Since I was a kid I was aiming to learn English because I knew that it is one of the most important tools in life.
I was basically forcing myself to watch American TV Shows, and movies all in English.

I really think Portugal is a great place to live. You have safety, health care, and affordable properties. I am sure you will make a success of this farm. If their are 2 homes on the property, they will give family lots of space to live comfortably. 🙂👍👍

Yes I was thinking about starting to grow already, But I decided to focus on the build first, move to the farm as soon as possible, and then I can start growing.

Ola Alex :)... from a Portuguese living in Canada for many-many years since a young boy , I am anxiously waiting to move back to my true home but have to wait a little longer still, but it makes me happy If I cant move back yet at least I take comfort that good people like you & your family are moving to Portugal, you already look & act Portuguese so you will fit right in :))) .. I am the daughter of a brick and stone mason, and am just in awe over the beauty of stonework in the building you and your father are restoring. The story of your life is the same that built America. Just about everyone you talk to has a family member who came here to start over. I wish you much happiness and a successful future. My husband Grandmother and Grandfather emigrated to America in the 1930s from Ukraine. My Papa came here from Germany in 1911. They all took a chance and with hard work they created a new home.

Не знаю який саме план ви вибрали, я би радила #1 з 2ма спальнями і ті двері, які в другій частині хати, не замуровувати під вікно, а поставити двері як в конюшні, які можуть також відкриватися тільки зверху. І раджу збудувати веранду від кухні та ґанок з другої сторони. Маючи ґанок з дахом, не будуть дуже нагріватися від сонця через вікна спальні. Можна навіть зробити другу веранду, а не ґанок, бо коли дуже вітряно в холодний сезон, то не буде задувати в хату і тепло всередині збережеться. Я би хотіла дати невелику пораду з англ. мовою. Правильно вимовляти live - лив, leave - лів. Агл. буква і - укр. и. Та чомусь багато іноземців вимовляють і.

I am Portuguese living in South Africa and always so pleased how my birth country is being energized with new people coming to live there to balance the young people leaving the country to work and live in other parts of Europe. Wish you the best and will track how you progress through your videos. No wise words other than, an old cycling saying that keeps me going when I cycle, there will be tough days and tough things but for every uphill stretch, there is a downhill stretch.
