Hi guys, I am Alex.
I am an Ukrainian expat who moved to Portugal.
No one in my family ever did any farming, But I discovered that I am very passionate about farming so recently I've purchased this 28 hectares Farm in Central Portugal, with the intention to start a small scale farm raising worms, cattle and sheep.
In this little farm I am also planning to build an off grid home, and be as self sufficient as possible, by growing my own food.
I created this channel to share my journey with the world, The journey of a first generation farmer, that is starting with no prior knowledge and experiences.
That maybe all the mistakes that I will make along this journey, and all the fails maybe will help some of you to learn from my mistake and not make them yourself.
I want to bring value and inspire people who are thinking about farming.
I am not a filmmaker or an editor, I am just a simple guy with a camera.
So if it is interesting to you, subscribe to the channel and you will not miss the upcoming episodes.

Friend use the hoe to mix the mortar, first mix the cement with sand and then the water, it's easier.
The way your dad could not stay away from the house reminded my of my dad who would rather renovate my apartment with me than enjoy his retirement. Dads can be really nice.
I am so glad it reminded you of your Dad,
Yeah we are like that, If we have a job to be done, we prefer to finish it, and then we can vacate :)
Alex
Next time u go to the hardware store ask for this: cunhas para encavar a enchada
They will sell u a strip of metal that u hammer on the top end of the wood handle and press the wood against the iron of the enchada
Then put it in a bucket of water before using it
Cheers
Thank you for the tip Victor!!
I will do that.
Yes you need a little peace of metal for your handle you hammer 🔨 it in the end of handle
My father used these metal wedges. Very useful and practical.
The sheep will do a better job of clearing brush and undergrowth than chemicals and pesticides. It's also safer for the environment.
They are also much harder to control, at least at the beginning, and more expensive.
Agree 👍🏼 or goats

Hello Alex... The thing about the stick of the hoe (the stick that comes out continuously) after using it, leave it in a bucket with water, the stick swells and does not come out... Regarding the cave you found, they are a kind of rats , they are called "campañoles" they eat all the vegetables they find... If you plan to have a garden you should know that you will have to put traps... I loved the work done, clean and neat... I like the idea of using concrete it will prevent that every year you have to clean the bramble and it's also a good way to combat it... Good for you for that amount of rock removed... you've earned yourself some beers ✌️😎🍺
Hi Graciela,
Thank you for the tip, It sounds very good, I will try that next time I will be using the hoe!
Rats? Okay, I will have to get rid of it then ))
Thank you for the feedback and support,
I am glad you liked it, And thank you very much for watching!
Sometimes we have the same problem with "enxadas". We put them in water during the Night!
Olá, tb podes colocar uma cunha de metal. Continuação de bom trabalho.
Great to see you have given your father a break from the renovation work Alex.
We can see you are a strong man lifting 💪 and carrying the stones. But I am concerned that you do too much lifting with your back. You need to use your knees to lift and should consider using the wheelbarrow more to minimalise the strain on your back. Once you damage your back it will never be the same. If you strain your back, it will always give you trouble when you get old like me !
Angela Davis is so lovely and curios more than a dog as a sheep, so cute. Area looks so much better after cutting the blackberries.
Good Job. Nice video.👍
Angela Davis haha yeah, she is very very curious :D
She is so funny that way :)
Thank you Gabriele, Appeciate the support!
Hi Alex , I am proud of your work ethic and the Joy and kindness shines through on your videos every time. So kind to give your Dad some time off and take care of yourself also, big kiss for Angelica from me.😀
Thank you very much for the kind word Lesley, It means the world to me!
Haha I will give her a big one ))
You seems a good and responsible son, and your father is loving father.may god bless you both
Thank you very much 🙏
I knew your father probably couldn’t stay away very long . Lol Angela will be happy to have both her men home . Good job on the clean up & cement work .
Hi Jean,
Thank you very much for the feedback on my work :)
Haha yeah, my father couldn't peacefully vacate :D
@@AlexLukachina
I bet you both wanted to get it all done soon...hahaha
@@101life9 Hahah yeah, we are just this kind of people :D
We cannot really vacate or have free days when there is work to be done ))
The fire risk must be sky high. I am glad you are not going to poison the ground and your lovely supervisor with chemicals. Thank you. Nice of you to give your dad a vacation, you remember to take breaks as well. I am wondering why you're not wetting the wall when you are pointing? Thanks for sharing.
Yes the Fire Risk is super high.
Thank you for the feedback!
Haha yeah I will vacate after I finish the house :)
An advice to fix your digger...put both parts in water, this Will make wood bigger and will fix
Good job Alex, Hope your dad had a good short Vacation. On the brambles you can spray all the roots with vinegar and sprinkle rock salt it is even good if Angela wants to lick at it. You should get yourself a pump sprayer to wet the walls and the rocks so they will stick better and not waste water by trying to pour it into the holes in the wall. A good way to fix the hoe is to cut a slot in the end of the pole and make a wedge out of wood and drive it into the slot then soak the end in water. soak it every now and then and drive the wedge tighter. Keep up the good work!!!!
Great to see how you tread Angela and that she is always by your site...
She is very special to me 🥰
@@AlexLukachina thats what i can see...beatiful
Angela was a great helper while your dad was away. She was happy with your Dad’s return. The back of the ruin is now ready for the next phase of the reno. Well done Alex! Looking forward to your next video. Stay cool!
Haha thank you Anna,
She indeed helped alot!!
Thank you for watching :)
Alex dont use poisons on your beautiful land! It will be easier to manage when you get more animals.🙂
Haha yeah, You are absolutely right Lisa.
When I will have more animals, everything will be cleared so much easier :)
Alex I love watching every week. Your sheep I just adore. Most of all I admire the way you treat yor dad
Abraços aqui do Brasil
Hello Alex. I love watching your videos. It's peaceful. Sorry for my English I'm just a French woman. I like your way of being with Angela. I'd like to be here
Hi Nathalie,
Thank you for the feedback and support!
Your English is very good!!
Haha, You would like to be her?
Yes because you seems so courageous and friendly
You could use all the overspill from the farmhouse as a base for your new road.
Hi Douglas,
You are absolutely right!
But that road that leads to the entrance is considered a public road,
So the city has to do the road ))
Plus it has a tube so they need to prelong it, its a bigger project than it seems ))
Well done sir. Gonna take some time but what a great piece of property. Thanks for all your doing to include us in this journey.
Hi Steve,
Thank you for your apprecitation.
Keep being awesome!
Alex had a little lamb it's fleece was white as snow and every where that Alex went his lamb was sure to go 😂😂she is just like a puppy dog following you around
I think you should leave those big boulders sticking out of your veranda. It would add an interesting feature.
Hi Snapper,
Yeah the ones in front of the back viranda gonna stay, we will just be needing to clip 1 of them.
I'm sure Angela thinks she's a dog, she's adorable!
You are doing a great job cleaning and building!!!
As for the hole in the ground, I think you'll need two or three cats!
Because if it's a snake or a mouse, the cat knows what to do!!
Thank you!!
Yeah I will get some cats in the future, its a must in a farm ))
Love Angela ❤ from Happy Valley, Oregon USA.
AM REALLY ENJOYING YOUR VIDEOS!
You did a great job Alex!!! Great Video and i love Angela!!!
Thank you very much for the feedback!!
Angela is very special :)
That's a lot of stone you moved in that heat! Good job clearing those gamble roots👏🏽
Thank you Christine!!
I love your "sheepdog "....keep up the great work 👍
Hahah, she is something else :)
Thank you Woody!!
Yeah....she is a beautiful loving "sheepdog" that doesn't bark or bite 🤣
Good work, Alex. Nice video. Angela missed your father.
Thank you very much!
She did :)
You are very good at flicking the mortar into the cracks...all the old timers apply it this way. Many DIY'ers struggle doing this kind of work and I am saying to my computer screen..."you've got to flick it" but of coarse they can not hear me....
Haha thats funny ))
And thank you very much for your feedback and support, It means the world to me!!
Is the digger still working? You and your Dad together are wonderful. Hope he’s having a great holiday. Bet he misses being there though. You have given your Dad a new lease on life.🙏👏
Hi Rachel,
Yes the Digger is working, But we cannot work on it :D
Because of the Extreme Fire Risk, we cannot use machinery.
Thank you for the support and feedback, I really do appreciate it!
Alex brother, commendable tht you are doing it alone with just dad to help. Do get some power tools as your dad shouldnt suffer any harm lifting such heavy loads. Best wishes frm UAE.
Hi Farah,
Power tools are expensive))
Nice sheep always followed You and it's a huge farm need lots of work.
Your drive way will look awesome when you clean it on both sides of the road and around all the trees and around the grape vines and trim the tree limbs from hitting the top of the truck and cars and when you are on the tractor. Also can you widen it some more for the bigger trucks to make it through there? While the low wet area is dry now you should fill it in with some rocks and soil so you don't get stuck in it when you try driving on it during the wet season. So much to do around there , it will keep you and your dad busy all the time.
Angela est une brebis intéressante!!
Mouiller bien les pierres pour que l'enduit tienne.
Good job!!👏👏
Angela is indeed very interesting sheep :)
Maybe there will be a snake nest or a rat nest or a mole’s nest , or a dormouse . You have to know also that the hares dig something like a swallows hole to make a nest. You have to pay attention but in most circumstances digging a hole as an animal helped the routes get air. So don’t get upset
Get a digging bar to help pry the stones out of ground. Also used for digging In Stony ground.
I love how Angela is helping you clear the driveway. So cute!
Wow... !!! My best friend, It's always great. I wish you every day of your development. Have a happy day!
It is hard to stay motivated when it is that hot there. We are feeling the heat in the south of the US. But you got quite a lot accomplished in this video. Not surprised your dad came back earlier than expected. Got to get work done while the sun shines. Winter will be here sooner than you need it to be. Great video.
Hi Cathy,
Haha yeah, Winter is coming ))
That property will be a huge amount of work to restore. Good Luck!
Haha yeah it would,
But thats the fun part ))
Your doing very well with all that needs doing on the farm Alex. Glad you know it will take time to sort the house and you are not despondent but up beat with what your achieving. Love the videos. 👍🏽😎
Thank you Gavin 🙏
Well done Alex, hope your father enjoys his breaks
Alex, You are doing a great job and your father too! Parabems!! Stay hydrated and be safe!! You will finish before you know it!! Tchau!
Hi Alex I always enjoy your video. And missing your dad
Thank you James!!
Great work Alex 👏
Thank you very much Stephen 🙏
Hi Alex, I've been thinking about your new plan and wondered if you'd considered dropping the floor level of the bottom bedroom by one or two steps to lift the ceiling height. Also what you plan for ventilation and light for the top bedroom. Could you lift the roof from the ridgeline to the front wall to allow for a window/bank of windows, perhaps 40 to 50 cm high and several metres long ?? I think it would look good and would make that room much more livable.
Hard worker for sure!! I'm no expert but from watching other RUclips videos, it seems they spray the rocks with water which helps the mortar stick to the rocks etc... just a tip from what I've seen on other channels. I'd hate for your mortar to fall off!!
Hugs from 🇨🇦
Hi Lori,
Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it very much!
Yeah I did water the rocks before, It was a hard moment to catch on the video but at the start there I used the bucket to water everything :)
Hi Alex ,the Enxada you fixed the handle on. You should leave the head in a bucket of water overnight. The bandle will swell and it will be much safer and easier to use . The hot weather dries out the wood, It shrinks and the head becomes loose. Better to keep it moist. Carry on the good work . Boa sorte. 👍
Dip in the water for night and every time when u want to use dip the lowest part in the water.
By this way wood sock the water and fit tightly
I find mixing lime or cement with sand BEFORE adding water works for me , but hey you are good at the job , so each to their own system .
if there is a wet place... look, where the water comes from!
water management in Portugal is essential, you will need for Your land each drop!
You are not alone, Angelique is always around
Haha, true!
The handle of the abs is all you need to do is cut the end. so you can Drive a Wedge into the cut and Secure the Abs head in place. and soak the head in water to make it swell up so the Abs stays on the handle
Hi Erick,
Thank you very much for the suggestion, I will do it next time! ))

Ponle un clavo largo en la punta del palo para que el palo se abra y se expanda en la punta junto a la azada,si te es posible....quizas esto te ayude a que el palo de la azada y la azada misma no se te mueva....saludos cordiales y animo.....
Thank you for the suggestion!
Sounds good!
Hola, lindo canal. Tines que ver la restauración del Chateau du Olly, Les Jeromes en youtube, la junta entre las piedras es de arena y cal viva porque el cemento las rompe.
Caution, you never know. Smart of you not to stick your hand in there!
Alex, did you measure your biceps before starting the reno? I am sure they have increased the size !!😂😂 Great work out everyday 👏💪👍
Oh...Angela is a great girl. She loves mulberry. 😅😁
Haha yeah, I think it doubled in size :D
Yeah She absolutely loves mulberry, its her favorite.

Stay cool and stay hydrated. Don't want any heat stroke on you.😀💖 Great that your dad's taking a little break but not for long .hahaha
Alex you and your father are doing a great job. Ome suggestion.I think you need to make a cut info the handel and then wedge a piece of angeled wood info it. But what would I know I am a 73 year old lady that loves solving problems. Most importent is het ut working for.a long time.
Thanks for your vid Alex 😇💟💟💟 Love you all,i think you forgot to wet the whole before cementing, and how is your digger doing?
Hi Arjan,
Thank you :)
I did wet before ))
The digger is the same, we can dig with it when needed, But because of the Extreme fire risk, we are prohibited from using machinery.
Great video Alex!!! Keep the hard work!))
Thank you! 🙏
Great job Alex !
Thank you Joanne!
Hey Alex, great work, and you and Angela are a prize turn.
You mentioned concreting ?the ground where you cleared the brambles and stones? That's to make a verandah? I'm not an expert, but I would be careful about doing anything like that which could affect the runoff and drainage, until you see how everything performs in winter, when it rains (hopefully). Aren't you thinking of putting in a French drain, to keep your building's walls dry? Perhaps it would be better use gravel and perhaps you could do calcada, which you can change afterwards? It allows water to filtrate into the ground.
It is good your Dad is getting a break… do you get a break also? 🌀💚🌀
Haha, I surprised him with a vacation, I sent him ))
And no, I Don't vacate until I finish the house ))
@@AlexLukachina Where did you send him
Hi, Angela looks so nice now she has had wool cut! I hope she gets more to eat than just salad! What about a friend for her? Someone suggested goats!
Haha yeah, she looks wonderful!
What do you mean more than a salad?
Hi again, Alec, check google what sheep can or can't eat...VIP! And treats...as she is your pet! Lots of local greens can be poisonous, esp, Oleander, which grows and flowers all over the med. You can't use the wood for a barbecue, and must wear gloves when cutting.
So that all makes for interesting, informative reading.Take care!
Angela is adorable 😍
Hello Alex welcome to U Tube!!🤘💋
Btw a channel Make do & Grow is probably yr Neighbors.
Stay happy and healthy, and ignore rude folks.
She so luvs you (: Spoiled she is lol
Hahah yes She is indeed Spoiled ))
Hi Alex, your never alone with Angelica about. She checks your work, keeps you company and eats all the branches you give her. The hole I think was dug by a rabbit, in it now could be a lizard, spider, scorpion or just a big salamander. 🤔 still wouldn't stick my hand in it though. Your hoe you repaired well, sharpen it too and it will cut through any brambles. Your other road is usable and needs a few more branches removed.on the right side as your coming out. You have achieved a lot and the area is cleared for decking. Clearing around the olive tree was a good Idea so you can have shade as a respite from the heat of the day
UK we have rain at the min, I will send you some......hope your dad had a nice break/ rest. Stay safe hydrate ,have a good week ahead.
Hi Helen,
Haha you are right, I am not alone, Angela is always there ))
Yea I am freightened to death sticking my hand into there LOL
Hahaha, Send over some Rain, WE NEED IT 😂
Thank you for the support Helen,
Keep being Awesome!!
Angela is so sweet. She is almost like having a dog
If you are using Glyphosate weedkiller then it is perfectly safe for animals and kills weeds down to the underground roots. Perfect for brambles.
Great work ethic! Be safe! Hydrate!
Olá, o prego do pedreiro é a água. Molhar bem a parede antes de colocar a massa
Hi Alex, Great work with the Brambles and rocks! your Dad will be pleased. Brambles are notorious for coming back, you are doing the right thing by getting the roots. I have subrcribed to your channel now as love watching your progress. Hope to be doing the same thing one day soon!! All the best to you both. Juliet
...great job on wall...😊
Thank you! 😊
You will find that the cement sticks to the rocks better if you wet the rocks first.
I didnt see one but I think you need to build a small home for Angela where she will be safe from the rain and the predators, for when you leave her alone at night
A tip for you, leave the anchada dentro de àgua.
Hello Alex I was wondering why you didn't use the digger to losen up those stones and brambles and save your back!! Lovely videos your doing a greand job I have a pet ewe sheep here in Ireland there a great pet dont think my ewe is likes brambles to eat ☺️
Hi Alex I think the hole maybe is a birds nest, some kind of a swallow. Kindest regards from the Netherlands.
ohh a bird?
Really?

Alex, ese trabajo que has hecho sacando piedra y limpiar el lateral de la casa..lo puedes hacer con la retro.
I could,
But Because of the Fire risk, I cannot use machinery.
Wet the Stones before you semment them in. Wet stones glue better to concrete
Hi, I see that you use the smaller stones like tiles. Ain't it better to stick it in the wall like splinters?
Bonjour et merci pour le partage. En rénovation de bâtiments en pierres il faut utiliser du ciment de chaux, j’espère que vous êtes informé. Bon courage 🇧🇪😊
Some use cement some use lime, each to there own
use a mirror and shine its light reflection in and find out whats inside
Your supervisor is eating all the time!
haha IKR
Can you try to get the stone out using the excavator..?
Hi Doreen,
I would love to!
But Because of the extreme fire risk, we are prohibited from using Machinery,
And plus as you can see there are alot of boulders there, so the excavator cannot pass there.
Alex both the wall and the stone have to be very well soaked with water wharn u apply the cement
Need to put some water on your stone before you put it in the wall 👍
Yeah I did wet them, you can see at the start of the timelapse.
👍
I had to laugh at your companion sheep’s name, my surname is Davis!
Would love to hear the story.
Regards Jen
Ps the hole looks like a rat or a rabbit made it.
And beware of scorpions around all the rocks
You have vols there like a small mouse they eat roots of carrot pumpkin etc they excavate entrances staying primarily underground . You guys may have covered somethings home when dumping the leveling surplus the only other I have seen is large wasps will make burrows don’t put your hand down in it , rather dig the soft soil and see what grabs you lol Alex not for the faint hearted , we have mutton birds that nest in burrows and a snake species “red belly blacks” eat them as chicks but as it gets colder and the chicks are as big as a small chicken they wrap around the birds down for warmth symbiotic relationship , trouble is for us to get the chick we have to put our hand down the burrow not knowing if a snake bite is coming a welding glove at least take care Alex Angella looks great 👍❤️❤️❤️🙏
alex that hole is a really nice and good hole if you getting deeper then you will find some oil there
Hahah yeah, I am sure of it 😂
And a handful of diamonds I heard, isn't it right ?
You could use an excavator to dig out the bush, I suppose.
Hi Macmroz,
Because of a Extreme fire risk, we cannot use machinery.
To me the hole looks like some kind of rodent hole. Snakes don't dig but move into holes rodents have dug out. Good thing you are patching the holes in your house! I don't bother trying to exterminate things that live outside since I feel another can just take its place. I just try to keep them out of my house & fence in any vegetables I don't want them to eat.
Could your pile of rubble/gravel from inside your house be used for your veranda or driveway?
Looks like the outside of your house is getting ready for barbecues!
A sheep needs friends like them. This is their natural way. It is cruel and unusual to keep one sheep solitary and worse leaving it alone.
