I love your determination to make the colored pencils work. You invested so much time and effort to get the quality you were used to achieving. Thanks for your dedication to your craft. I really appreciate your honesty.
You’re hilarious and so are your dogs. Mine will bark at hubby now and then, usually I think it’s if he’s coming home at the “wrong” time of day or through the front gate instead of the garage, so a break in routine. She never barks at me but then I never leave home without her so we haven’t had that coming-home-to-Silkie dynamic. I prefer the pencil drawing actually. I get the problems you had, especially with the butterfly because there was so much embossed detail. However, I think the colours on the pencil butterfly are much prettier, I’m glad you didn’t go with black. And I like how the leaves look like a pencil drawing instead of being super-smooth. I like the other one too, but the pencil one is my fave. Having said that, I’ll never try pencils on an embossed image. And, because of my RSI, I find that pencils really aren’t in my wheelhouse any more. When I was a teen I got incredibly high marks in art class (year 12) for my greyscale pencil drawings but spending days on them - who has the time? - and the action of drawing with pencils aggravates my Rsi. So not for me. Such a shame about the Altenew event. I’d love to join in but I just placed an order with the Evil Amazon and got an email back saying it’d take between 1 and 2 months for the order to arrive, and that’s with DHL (they’re usually fast and reliable). So the likely time of arrival plus my plans to move interstate - hopefully around the end of November - means that international postal orders are not an option. (That Amazon order? That WAS THE AUSTRALIAN AMAZON, grrr.)
Just jumped over to see what was up over at Hero Arts, will watch it later, but it was nice to actually see you! You should do more of that, but that’s just me, I like to see the face that belongs to the voice, lol.
Wow! Amazing! What I did with one of my 3D cards was colored first the first layer before the embossing and then after you embossed , you can go with your second layer, and so on. I wish I can send you a picture of it , I was surprised myself how stunning it came. Hope that helps!
I actually really like the look of the leaves best when done only with the colored pencils. I think you did an amazing job with them. That said - no thank you! It looked like a lot of work and as you mentioned- kind of seems like they aren’t designed to play well together. It would be really hard not to flatten or even deboss what the 3D folder embossed by using colored pencils. Kudos to you for sticking with it to the end - but don’t feel the need to torture yourself in that way again to satisfy our curiosity!
Love both the cards I would never have thought to use pencils that way. I will have to catch the live over breakfast tomorrow, something to look forward to. I wish I could participate in the retreat spending more time with you would be amazing, maybe next time.
Got our electric back on today so I’m trying to catch up on your videos. It’s been a rough couple weeks after the Hurricane but grateful to be here. Pretty cards.
Definitely ur one of our favorite Art Card Artists, because you keep it real and show that’s what you do when things don’t work out as you originally planned. That really helps us all out, thank you so much!
I really liked watching you use colored pencils....beautiful 3D images! You were great on the Hero Arts live...I had to watch it later but you didn't seem to have any issues.... I would have loved to participate in the Altenew retreat, if I had been able to plan for it for a couple of months I definitely would have participated...maybe next time!
I appreciate you powering through this (partially so I don’t have to)! I guess the only other thing worth trying would be the pencil/gamsol combo first, then doing all the pencil details, but I’m not sure that would be worth it. You are so kind to be our crafty lab doing all the experiments! Also, I finally realized why your intro music sounds so familiar: it’s the “Mr. Blue Sky” piano part! Or, at least very similar. How many years have I been listening to this? Good thing I never claimed to be self-aware.
The gamsol definitely helped the colored pencil image. Over the weekend I watched a video on the Altenew channel that demonstrated a way to increase details and depth using the folders multiple times to create the look using inks and stencils. I like the way Altenew steps up the game with their products giving lots of options.
Kelly, thank you for your insights and experience with using colored pencils on embossed paper. I personally really loved the marker butterfly before the detailed layer. I was also wondering if you might have liked it better if you had added a white ink over the detail layer rather than the black? Either way, whoever you send this card to will be very happy to get it and think it is beautiful. We are always our own worst critics.
The retreat sounds fun just curious do you know if you get watercolor and or alcohol markers. I have both but wondering if the kit is more stamp/die/stencil or has some inks/markers/watercolor as well?
Gorgeous cards, as always! Can you tape your the cardstock inside the embossing folder to color your image? I was thinking that would give you some stability so that you don't deboss the image. 🤩🤩🤩
Kelly, I haven’t watched the whole video yet but I’m wondering if after you have colored the embossing could you re-emboss or will it slip? I am thinking if you lightly spray water on the non-colored side it may work. Thoughts…
Both cards are beautiful. I did learn something, I'm not going to try colored pencils with embossing folders! I have way too much anxiety as it is and this looks very stressful.
Awesome teaching moments. I learned a lot. Kelly, I'm retiring from my job at the end of December and if you need a moderator I'd be happy to learn and help you. Let me know if you are interested.
One thing that I have found that works with coloured pencils is just to lightly rub over with my finger tip - it seems to take away some of the lines. I just spent hours colouring a beautiful fushia and it turned out beautiful. Then I went to die cut it. I said to myself - you should wait until tomorrow - you are not seeing so good - but I thought I had it all lined up.. and alas it wasn't. Do you have any tricks to recover my image :
I’m like you about self promotion but if this is your job you need to think of it as marketing and not feel guilty. If you had a brick and mortar store you would do some form of advertising and asking people to subscribe or letting us know about classes you are teaching are expected. You are great at what you do and should not feel guilty or embarrassed to self promote. It’s not as if you are bragging you are just letting us know what “products”you have available.
I love your determination to make the colored pencils work. You invested so much time and effort to get the quality you were used to achieving. Thanks for your dedication to your craft. I really appreciate your honesty.
I was in the process of emailing you when this video popped up. Now to watch
I think they are both beautiful. Love the colors of the butterflies.
I love love the butterfly colours, Kelly!
Even tho you were not happy with the card, I thought it was so beautiful! I love butterflies also! Thank you!❤

Wow Kelly, it's still beautiful! I love them both!
These turned out so beautiful Kelly 💛. It was worth the struggle IMHO 😁.

I watched the Hero Arts replay. You did a great job.
They both ended up beautiful 😊
GORGEOUS!!~~!
Thank you for sticking with it till the end and not throwing it in the bin. You are a true artist. Beautiful cards! 💞
Both cards are beautiful. You are so talented.
Hi Kelly,
GREAT cards. ALWAYS learn so much from you. Thank you for making your videos so informative. TYFS.
You are such a gifted teacher. I love your honesty and how you show us how you color, and the challenges that using different mediums bring.
Both cards are beautiful . Thank you.

Congrats on your growth! You are going to rock the class!

Interesting video. What a difference in the two cards using the different mediums. Thanks for sharing your tips and techniques.
Beautiful as always. Have a glorious day! 😊
Omg, I am at McDonald's drive thru. I can't wait to watch this!
All of your coloring is amazing-even the ones you don’t like. I have seen others use gamisol with coloring pencils. Might help. ❤
Very pretty, my choice is the first one you did.
I thought you did a great job on the Hero Arts LIVE!
You did a fabulous job with Hero Arts! Thank you.
I’m so looking forward to the class. I just signed up (first online class)😊

So very pretty
Your fingernails are perfect!!
They are both beautiful! I am so impressed with your talent! Thanks for sharing!
Very pretty!

I already signed up. I love Altenew. I love the cards.
Congratulations on teaching at the LIVE Retreat! Way to go! You will do a great job! Thanks for all the great tips❤️
I caught your Hero Arts live. You did a fantastic job!
Beautiful!!
I saw it! So pretty!❤
Ha! "Five-ever"!! Hilarious!
The cards are pretty!!
Have you tried using the Tim Holtz Distressed Watercolor Pencils with your embossing folders? Love this card & enjoy your projects and storytelling. ❤
Would the blending brushes get into those little grooves better? Gorgeous cards!!
Stunning, both of them!
How would it work if you coloured it first and then embossed it?
Fall, winter and holiday cards please.
The retreat sounds fun just curious do you know if you get watercolor and or alcohol markers. I have both but wondering if the kit is more stamp/die/stencil or has some inks/markers/watercolor as well?
Did you try re- embossing after coloring, to pop up what was pushed down? The results of both cards, also color of the butterflies is so beautiful
What are you talking about? Your cards look great before using the Gamsol. Beautiful work.
ThNk you for that, interesting.
Gorgeous cards, as always! Can you tape your the cardstock inside the embossing folder to color your image? I was thinking that would give you some stability so that you don't deboss the image. 🤩🤩🤩
BOTH CARDS ARE REALLY BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Did you try putting back into embossing folder after you were done? I LOVE your shading, & color combos!!!
I wonder if you could have colored with more force using the pencils and then re-emboss the image
Awesome teaching moments. I learned a lot. Kelly, I'm retiring from my job at the end of December and if you need a moderator I'd be happy to learn and help you. Let me know if you are interested.
How about Gamsol? Have you ever used that?
gamsol for smooth bending?

Gamsol
oops. Sorry again.
I am sorry, but I have to disagree with you, I like the finished card very much with the pencils. You are being too hard on yourself here.
