  • PLEASE CONSIDER SUBSCRIBING IF YOU LIKE THIS VIDEO. I have over 500 videos that are very similar to this on the channel and if you enjoy my style and want to see more I upload high quality railfanning videos on a biweekly basis!
    In 2014, I took a trip out to Tucson, Arizona, to rail fan UP's spectacular Lordsburg Subdivision (Known as the Stormy) between Tucson and Cochise, Arizona. Over 3 hours of footage are included in this incredible video, featuring a pair of over-unders at Cienega Creek Trestle, UP 1995, the Chicago & Northwestern Heritage Unit, Amtrak's Sunset Limited, the Wilmot Turn with 3 SD40-2's and a cut of intermodal cars, the beautiful and treacherous climb to Dragoon Summit east of Benson, older DASH 8 and DASH 9 locomotives, The Copper Basin Railway dumping Ore in Hayden, and even a BNSF SD70ACe in the lead on a manifest train!

    The train passing your camera right now is just like the ones I watched when I visited my cousins in Shelbyville Indiana!! The main difference is that there were more different locomotives hauling the freight!! Way back then there were steam trains as well as diesel.

    Well I’ve never seen double stacked containers over here in England, but I doubt that we have the need for them. It’s great to see that it’s possible to double stack containers and that they don’t come off the wagon every time the train turns!!

    • @kaihorstmann2783
      @kaihorstmann2783 Год назад

      You cannot run them there because space in tunnels, overhead power lines, etc, etc, is simply too small to fit stack trains. Like wise in continental Europe.

    Superbes Images, Merci de partager.
    Merci aussi de ne pas nous imposer de voir en détails tous les waggons de chaque train. Le suivi des trains est très bien et c'est très bien tourné. Au alentours de la minute 17 de la vidéo, on voit un convoi avec 7 machines en tête, j'ai bien l'impression que seules les deux premières sont actives, les 5 autres sont en remorque.
    Je note aussi l'attention à bien "cadrer", c'est assez rare de voir les train entièrement dans le cadre. C'est vrai qu'avec les paysages de l'Arizona ça aurait été dommage de ne pas profiter de l'environnement

      I checked it again and again, it starts à 17 min and the consist is headed by 2 active locomotives and it seems 5 other are ferried unpowered. I can't see any exhaust smoke after the 2nd loc.
      Probably newly delivered engines. The painting seems clean.

    How many trains pass Tuscon, per day?

    • @lostbetrayed
      @lostbetrayed 4 года назад

      A few I'm guessing cause I live near Tucson along the former Southern Pacific route and a few trains pass through every day as well as every night. Tucson has a little shortline at Port of Tucson it's called of Port of Tucson RR I believe and my town has one called San Pedro Valley RR their aren't any railfan videos of them in the area especially at their yard they were San Pedro and Southwestern up until late last year their are a couple of videos of it on RUclips if their old gp9's that they no longer own in other states. They only have gp30's now I forgot what locomotive they have for their switchers. I'm thinking about getting permission to film at their yard and maybe finding out when they run so I can get some videos made of them their is a rail crossing in saint David they go through that would be a good spot. A lot of the stuff on San Pedro online are photos. one of their locomotives did appear on a railfan Depot video in Wilcox when UP4014 and UP1996 (Southern Pacific heritage unit) came in the early 2010's I think the video is on Facebook. Anyways I hope some people make more videos of that shortline San Pedro and maybe of Port of Tucson

    • @RailfanJunction
      @RailfanJunction  10 лет назад +3

      Well, I would show the entire train, but for most shots I packed up and chased it to the next location down the line. I'd rather get a train at 10 locations then shoot the entire thing and get it at 3 instead, if you know what I mean.

    • @trainmanj
      @trainmanj 10 лет назад +1

      RailfanJunction
      I guess I am one that wants to see the entire train once and wait for the next one. Chasing them down to see multiple times is just for special runs, like a heritage unit or steam excursion. Too each his own.

    • @MrSnowy79
      @MrSnowy79 9 лет назад +1

      And also some people may not want to sit and watch a whole 1.5 mile long train go past. We get the idea lots of different cars. Having it skip through the train length a few times and then see it some where else.. Scenery my friend makes up a huge part of rail-fanning not just car counting.

    • @RailfanJunction
      @RailfanJunction  9 лет назад +4

      MrSnowy79 I understand, and most of the time I change up my shots during a train to add variety. I try and chase trains as much as possible, but for those that I filmed the entirety of I was either stuck waiting for them to pass or waiting on another train behind it. Scenery makes up around 90% of my shot selections, but I personally also like to see all the freight cars and shipping containers that make up our rail system. Just personal taste I suppose.

    • @MrSnowy79
      @MrSnowy79 9 лет назад +1

      RailfanJunction
      Yea for sure I agree with that too. I dont mind either. If the location is worthy then watching a whole train go past is great. If the contents of said train is out of the ordinary too. Fantastic work either way mate. Looks good on the big screen :D

      The line is very hilly, but I didn't spend to much time on the flat sections. Train speeds can get up to 70 MPH on the Wilcox Playa east of Dragoon. Personally though I enjoy the slower running on the mountainous sections, as that means I can actually chase the slower-moving trains there.

    Call me crazy, but it still amazes me that railroads continue to allow vandals to spray paint their cars. With all that is available in cheap video camera's, and motion activated technology, why is this still going on? FWIW-I have lived in Arizona since 1974, and I have never heard of the town's you are filming from, must be just RR equipment location or place names unoccupied. Excellent work, I hope you weren't filming in late June of the first of July, 2014, the heat is unbearable. The foliage looks more like April.

    • @peterf.229
      @peterf.229 8 лет назад +1

      +Bobby Paluga its simple follow I-10 through Tucson and you will find most of the towns mentioned. Benson is East of Tucson, Dragoon is east of Benson I think or maybe West.. etc etc etc.
      Ive seen lots of UP trains while traveling on I-10 near Tucson.. also Ive seen Arizona and California trains near Wickenburg/Agilla AZ and Ive seen BNSF trains near Flagstaff. . Ive never seen any of the ones through Globe/supierior but there are lines there that appear at least to get some use sometimes.
      BTW people live in Dragoon, Benson, and Tuscon.. where in AZ are you living since 1974?

    how do you track each train

    • @RailfanJunction
      @RailfanJunction  9 лет назад +1

      Honestly speaking, I didn't on this particular trip, but I normally use a program called ATCS Monitor which identifies where trains are (No ID's) on a subdivision. It works really well in urban areas with coverage, but it gets spotty in relatively remote areas, unless you have a wireless hotspot to hook up to. I also use a scanner tuned to AAR channel frequencies that I use extensively for listening to dispatchers and train crews talking (It's completely legal). Both help tremendously in knowing where trains are and when they'll be coming.

      Where did you get the nickname "The Stormy" from? Just curious. I just started dispatching on this territory.

    • @RailfanJunction
      @RailfanJunction  9 лет назад +1

      The Lordsburg Subdivision's nickname of "The Stormy" comes from the line's tendency to have violent thunderstorms during the later summer months (Along with most of Southern Arizona), I was there at the beginning of Summer and missed the worst of it but they do get quite bad.

    • @bobbypaluga4346
      @bobbypaluga4346 9 лет назад

      D-M in Tucson is the last A-10 base, Obama is trying to close out the program, but he has a Hawkish John McCain to deal with, and given D-M is the last Armed Forces base in AZ of any size, dropping the A-10 would dismiss a state with incredible flight training conditions. Since 70% of the state is federal land, it's also a great place for bombing training and there is nothing to replace the ugly but incredible A-10 or airborne artillery. We pay for having a leader who grew up hating the military and apparently remains unchanged.

      And how exactly are we supposed to control for that? You get what you get when you go out and the Sunset Route is filled with double stacks.

      I did! All of my newer videos (this one is almost 9 years old) have a wind sock on them. Ironically I actually had bought one right before going out to the desert for this trip but it came the day after we left for it

      I didn't even pay attention to the date lol. I am "watching" this at work, mainly for the sound, and the wind noise got to be a little much.
      Anyone else notice #2160 surging at about 1:24:00? Sounds like too much fuel maybe, or the governor oil is low
