- Tony and Johanna review Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. In this Podcast/Movie Review of the first entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise they will go into all the things that make it fantastic. Like the top notch fight scenes, the great direction by Gore Verbinski, and the iconic performance by Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow!
Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) arrives at Port Royal in the Caribbean without a ship or crew. His timing is inopportune, however, because later that evening the town is besieged by a pirate ship. The pirates kidnap the governor's daughter, Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), who's in possession of a valuable coin that is linked to a curse that has transformed the pirates into the undead. A gallant blacksmith (Orlando Bloom) in love with Elizabeth allies with Sparrow in pursuit of the pirates.

Thinking of Geoffrey Rush, you should do Mystery Men.
Tony actually knew like almost all the characters names !
what can I say, he's a pro
“the code is more what’d you call guidelines than actual rules…”
- the best line in the movie. I think Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbosa was one of the best parts of this series. he was the best part of Mystery Men too lol.
They need to do Mystery Men.
Reddit: "You are without a doubt the worst movie reviewer I've ever heard of!"
Tony: "But you have heard of me!"
I literally make that joke hahaha
Tony who?
@@herr_crustovsky Toan from Massacre the Cinema, you know him?
Which I’m sure has zero the do with being affiliated with Sleepy James Woof
Tony please do mouse hunt it’s a great cult classic
"This is the day you will always remember as the day you almost caught Captain Tony Sparrow."
support Johnny Depp, cancel Amber Heard
“The code is more what’d you call guidelines than actual rules. And the guidelines are more what you'd call zig-zags and squigglies”
I remember this movie being sold out on opening day. My buddies and I saw League of Extraordinary Gentlemen instead. Thankfully, we saw it on the Saturday. I love this movie.
Curse Of The Black Pearl is great. I even like the two following films (to a lesser extent). Its after At Worlds End where it loses me
EDIT: love Tony's shirt
Same, the first original trilogy has a great beginning middle and end
The 4th was god awful because they clearly had no idea for a story, so they stole a book about Blackbeard and just shoehorned in Jack Sparrow and Barbosa which is why the Pearl and the entire crew were shoved into a bottle. Dead Men Tell No Tales had an alright premise and atleast was an original story....Just doesn't help when all your actors are acting like garbage trash, everyone in that movie just seemed bored and acted like they were bored.
Dammit, Tony, you can't pander to an audience if you tell them you're pandering to them.
I'm so bad at this!
@@HackTheMovies that's okay. You're still famous RUclips movie critic, Tony from Hack the Movies.
Gore Verbinski’s whole Pirates trilogy in retrospect is great. They don’t make uncompromising weird blockbusters like that anymore. There’s a scene in the third one that’s basically an avant garde silent movie sequence. We didn’t know what we had.
Tony in Dark Knight Rises is like the new Kevin Bacon
Tony your videos always makes me laugh and happy so keep up the great work and I'm looking forward towards your review of alien 3 and jungle cruise
Where im from we pronounce 'alien in the jungle' as "predator"
Muppet Treasure Island, you say? Can't wait for that episode
Yes, Trevor Goddard was doing a cockney accent in MK that was mistaken for Australian. The funny thing is Kano in the later MK games adopted the Australian accent because of this mistaken accent.
I was 18 when this movie was brand new.
18 years before you were brand new as well
[Insert Amber Heard joke here]
Wow, last time Johnny Depp was concerned about a bottle of booze, Amber Heard was coming at him with 1.
@@patrickcharles6983 Haha! Good one!
But the rums gone!
YES! More of these two
The review calls to us !
I’ve literally been bingeing the movies for the past two days. Literally midway through the first I was like, I wonder what tony and the gang would say about the movie.
"Literally" being used in 2 different ways, both unjustly wrong....
I really really really want that “Drugs” shirt. I want to wear it to work. I’m sure my supervisors would love that.
Talkin ta ta talkin bout tapez.
Pirates of the Caribbean did a hell of a lot better of a job with the ghost pirate concept than the 2005 version of "the Fog", that movie was about as bad as "Haunted Mansion".
Diffrent budgets id imagine
Can we talk about Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World?
I think that’s actually the movie that snubbed pirates and got to use the titanic pool instead lol
I played a talking octopus in Dungeons and Dragons that was wearing a man suit pretending to be a pirate. I did all sorts of fun pirate stuff like having multiple old timey pistols ready to go. But my favorite thing I did, I bought barrels of black powder and we rolled them into a dungeon and then i had the wizard shoot a fireball into the opening of the place. We collapsed the entire dungeon. Mission accomplished. You can tell what year I was playing based on the release of the first Jonny Depp pirate movie.
'Maelstrom' was the greatest ride to ever exist at a Disney Park.
Please review 'Under Wraps'.
Agreed however I'm heavily biased as I used to babysit my little cousin a ton back when these movies were new. She used to use my own older ruffio playsword from hook as well as the sword she had from her capt. Jack costume and we used to play around and pretend we were pirates and the house n yard were our ships/towns/scenery. She grew up to be a decent artist and an awesome adult. I'd like to think I had a small part in that.
I saw this before it came out in the cinemas.
My family went on the Disney Cruise and they had a movie theatre on board that was showing it.
Seeing it whilst on a ship, when not seeing any of the trailers or promos beforehand, blew my teenage mind.
Stop making up stuff
Thats Got to Be the Best Movie Reviewer Ive Ever Seen
Yessss so excited, love this movie
Anne Bonny was the female pirate she sailed in a pirate crew of Calico Jack Ransom with a second female pirate Mary Reid
I think they both avoided execution for a sec. because they were both pregnant. I might be misremembering
I feel like tony and Johanna are gonna get back together
I understand your concerns about mouse hunt likely being a bust for you views wise, but I had it on vhs and saw it a bunch of times. Would definitely watch it if you do a video on it.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say “Pirates of the Caribbean was supposed to be the next Star Wars”
Ever lol
Well they were trying since the beginning to make it the next big thing, the advertising campaign and the merchandise were massive. You couldn't open a can without seeing Depp's face. Everyone was kinda waiting for more movies, a trilogy probably. So the similitude works IMHO. Also it was incredibly popular among teenagers, especially girls I must say. I was too old for it maybe, so I didn't see it in theaters, but most girls I dated were aware of it and some loved it
please make a comp of tony talking about dark knight rises. because awareness is half the battle
Bootstraps, Bootstraps 😂👍
I like all the guests but sometimes I wonder did they really pay attention to the movie or did they just print out the Wikipedia page to refer to during the show, Johanna though seems to really know the movie, you know she watched it and paid attention and was interested, whether the movie was good or bad. She also has a good sense of humor. I like the shows with her the best.
I love this movie!
Everyone forgets about the 1997 Disney movie Tower of Terror with Steve Guttenburg and Kirsten Dunst thats based off a Disney ride. Also Jungle Cruise was great! Similar to The Mummy.
This became an instant favorite of mine. So much so that I saw it at least three times in theaters. Every last nook and cranny of this film is perfect. My youngest daughter had a handful of my dvds she'd always rewatch when she was 5, blk pearl☠ was one. I can't think of a better hero entrance other than Jack Sparrow, off the top of my head.
Also, first & foremost Mouse Hunt is an amazing piece of cinematic triumph, period.
And Tony, I'd take it as a sign of disrespect if u didn't review it, and with your lovely cousin Joanna of course👌🐁
Hyped for this 😎
Justice for Johnny!
A poppet is a puppet, but means doll so year similar to something like "dear" or "hon".
Johanna and Tony (from Hack the Movies!) is always a great reviewing duo. I must admit I don't care for the "pirates of the Caribbean" movies, but I'm biased since an ex I had was SOOO much into them, we watched them all 5 or 6 times. Not in the right order btw. This wasn't even Netflix and chill, actually :"be quiet I'm trying to watch this" kind of deal. No sexy times allowed.
Okay weird flex naming Anne Bonny.
Dark Knight Rise reference
3:23
He shot me!
Please Do Mouse Hunt!! I watched that all time growing up. My parents had a van with a TV/VCR in the 90's and I had a few movies that I had doubles of that one would be in the van and I would usually throw mouse hunt in when the tv wasn't getting a good over the air signal. I still watch it every year. Everyone in that movie is amazing.
Tomorrowland is technically a theme park attraction movie.
Fun fact about the sword Will presents to Govenor Swan! If you follow the story of just the sword you'll realize that it's the sword that Davy Jones stabs Will with in At Worlds End!
Will crafted the sword, only to have it plunged into him in the third film.
Yikes.
I remember cutthroat island! At least the cover art lol...
There is a video game based on Pirates Of The Caraibbean, a few, with the Bethesda pulished one based on the films, in name only, it's really just another game in the Sea Dogs series called Sea Dogs 2, it was called Pirates Of The Caraibbean because the Sea Dogs series isn't as well known in the US than in the country of origin.
Queen Anne’s Revenge is not named after Henry’s executed queen. Different Queen Anne
Tony dropping Blackbeard references...
When discussing Disney movies based on theme park rides, does anyone remember Tower of Terror? It believe it was a TV Movie and it starred a young Kirsten Dunst and Steve Guttenberg. I never hear anybody talking about it.
Sea chanttees i want to play assassins creed now and do some whaling
Nice review
And Gore did Rango which is awesome
41:43 I literally gasped at how I thought exactly the same thing lol
It’s amazing how this film should *never* have worked. Just the perfect maelstrom (ha) of directing, writing, *cinematography* , acting (for the most part), editing, sound & SFX… and the music.
I hope you guys go back and check out at least 2 & 3. Sure, they’ve got some stuff that’s cringe & useless, but there is some gold in there too… *especially* with the characters and **more especially** with Davy Jones and Bill Nighy’s portrayal of him. The music especially shines in 2 & 3 as well!
Trevor Goddard, I felt had a great career ahead of him. Have you ever seen his ultra-low budget movie Hollywood Vampyr? Brain Damage Films (look up their catalog, LOL) released it back in 2002. It also co-stars Muse Watson, the villain from the I Know What You Did Last Summer movies.
Wait Haunted Mansion was Disney? I swear to god Nickelodeon aired that movie once! Reminds me of when Cartoon Network aired Jurassic Park 3 in 2005 (my first time seeing that movie.)
she won't watch The Office but she did a re-watch off One Tree Hill? This actually explains alot about her personality
I believe the Fox Studios in Rosarito Baja Mexico was were they shot the Titanic scenes. Troy was in production during POTC time.
Johanna is my favorite guest ( I know, I say this every time)
This was a lot of fun.
Tony doing a reenactment of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Captain Tony trying to say parley
Crystal: Parlay
Tony: That's the one. Parlay
Newt: Parlay, damn to the depths what ever mutt came up with the name parlay.
Tony: That would the French.
How did noone else that had the coins turn into a skeleton? Elizabeth had it for a while
think its only the ppl who took it from the chest
@@OCxMetalhead word
Pirates of the Caribbean is amazing 🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯
“Black Sails” was amazing!!!
Love the first one.
Fell asleep in the theater during the second one.
Never watched the rest.
That was an interesting intro😂
09:40. Light touch paper. Stand well back........
Dead Mans Chest is the best of the series
Kissing Orlando Bloom is always consensual. His hotness invalidates legal statutes.
Yay Johanna!
This movie was so good for being based off a ride
But Tony, I thought “Video games are for children”
Please do Mouse Hunt!!!
1:06:42 Why's one of the ears missing a chunk?
I was wondering that too
It's funny that the studio initially wanted to fire Depp for his Cap'n Jack act in the first movie, and in the sequels they basically appropriated it from him.
Well, Depp had to improvise most of his work in the sequel, the "I Got A Jar Of Dirt" scene is the most well known, as he had to improvise brcause he forgot the script, he was also the same person that fell of the captain's wheel and down a fleet of stairs on the ship but still managed to pick himself back up with the jar in his hands.
I work for Ubisoft and we don't even know what's happening with Skull and Bones.
Robin Williams uses the word "poppet" in Mrs. Doubtfire when talking to the audience at the end of the movie. So yeah, I guess it's a term of endearment
Master and Commander is the only other movie I can think of at the time to use the Titanic pool.
A man being hung and a man being hanged mean two *very* different things Tony.
two*
@@HackTheMovies I blame my keyboard for this embarrassing foible! My bird pulled off my "W" and a couple of other keys and now they don't trigger unless I press hard.
Birds are bastard.
Nothing like talking to your ex on RUclips, Mad Respect Mr.Tony
We broke up like 13 years ago and were friends in high school before that. It's no big deal.
a poppet is a doll
which is still a cutsey name for a woman
Dayum I dont care what anyone says. Johanna is very pretty, and so damn adorable when she gives Tony eye rolls. I was 13 when this film came out, this was the film me and my older sister saw the most. Then they rereleased the film in theaters casue it did so well.
Cutthroat Island is one of my favorite pirate films. However, what really killed that film is poor marketing.
If the Pirates don’t feel anything in the hot coals shouldn’t hurt them
Controdiction?
Please do the sequels for these movies! I love them all except 3 is a little disappointing.
That last min didn't actually get the claim did it?
Hey Tony, where can I buy one of those shirt?
FYI: Hans Zimmer worked on the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack.
He also did the soundtrack for The Lone Ranger
Do the peanut butter solution
Do a movie that’s just pleasantly weird like hitchhikers guide to the galaxy
Tony seemed like something was wrong
Fun movie. Still the best one, though I actually enjoy the rest of the series for what they are.
Tomorrowland was another Disney movie ride film
Yall should date again. 😊
This is almost too chill of an episode. Where's Newt to liven things up.
Too many messages saying less Newt. so taking step back from time to time. let others annoy viewers
