I found this book one day at my local library in 1991.
I couldn't stop reading it as it made so much sense to me and I couldn't find anything bad or harmful in what was being said. I put it into practice immediately, joined a gym and 7 months later I was down over 80 pounds with a body that looked like an Olympian track star.

I read Fit For Life in 1987,. when I was 17. I began following the program and became a vegetarian that same year. I am now 50 years young. I am still a vegetarian. Compared to everyone else in my family, my health is supremely better and ALWAYS has been. I cannot over-emphasize the effect that FFL has on my entire life and I am so grateful that I found Harvey and Marilyn's book when I did.

Wow, so interesting. I am 28 and started eating this way after finding FFL book. Can I ask you, do you follow the food combining guidelines closely or do you just stick to fruit in the elimination period up until 12? E.g he says to only mix one food group with fruit or veg. So we can only combine protein with veg or fruit, or starches with veg, but not protein and starch. So that means we cannot have e.g. tofu and rice and veg, only veg and rice or veg and tofu.
Btw, I am interested in optimum health and energy not losing weight. I am already very lean. Thanks in advance :)

I lost 65 lbs on the Fit for Life diet about 22 years ago. Thought I could go off it and get back on when I wanted to, but gained all my weight back and started losing my health again. Went on the Ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting about 3 months ago, and lost 30 lbs. But hit a plateau, so I decided to go back to a modified Ketogenic/low carb/Fit for Life diet. I am now losing weight again. I have fruit around 2 pm, then usually around 6 pm I have a protein meal with vegetables or a salad. Later I may have a snack or so. Then at 10 pm my eating window closes and I fast until 2 pm the next day. 16 hours of fasting and 8 hours of eating. I try to keep my carbs under 25 grams per day, but I don't count the fruit carbs at all. Much easier to follow than the Keto diet by itself. I was missing the sweet taste. The fruit gives me the sweet taste I needed, without crashing my weight loss.

Like loads of other viewers here, I read FFL about 22 years ago & couldn’t believe how healthy I became & how the extra 15kg I was carrying fell off - just melted away ... my skin was also amazing
I still use over 15 recipes from that book regularly - the soups alone are outstanding - lemon/garlic/mustard chicken is a favourite (I always get asked for my recipe if I cook it for anybody else) -,and let’s not forget that DECADES before you could purchase nut and seed mills easily, Harvey & Marilyn introduces many of us to the concept and then gave us the 411 on how to easily and cheaply prepare them
No gimmicks or supplements or shakes or anything of that nature ,... a few straightforward principles and some really awesome recipes
Thanks to both Harvey and Marilyn

Agree on all counts. Sadly, Marilyn is now disavowing the old FFL paradigm and is very into keto. She looks great but has had a lot of work done. Their original book is now 35 years old but the principles are all still very helpful. For me, it's a sweet spot of combined elements which work.

Now in my 60's, I'm back to the FFL basics to pick up needed enegy and drop un-needed pounds! This is the most effective way to still eat things you like in a manner your body can deal with them, and shed unwanted weight.

Did that 90 %, roughly, for 7 years.
Then, in 1997, fell off the wagon.
    Totally regret that !
EXCEPT, one thing I continued without wavering is EATING FRESH FRUIT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.
And, especially, fresh fruit as a first main meal of the day.
So, no matter what negative health effects I may presently have accrued from poor SAD+ eating these last 23 years, I know I'd be way worse if I hadn't kept the Fresh Fruit regulation.

In my 30 years of nutritional research and work I have to admit that some folks just don't thrive on the fruit all morning approach. Protein in the mornings combined with greens or veg, or just by itself, is fine if that feels better for you. Or have some fruit upon waking and since it digests so quickly, have that protein an hour or so later.

I know from experience how I feel when I eat this way; and how I feel when I don't----just like Harvey Diamond says---It is NOT a 'fad diet" It is a WAY of HEALTHY eating for lifelong ENERGY and well-being. Fun trivia fact: Ever hear of self-help guru Anthony Robbins? This is the way HE has been eating, for over 20 years. Too bad it's buried under all the fad crap diets--Keto, Adkins, etc. OMG. Fruit is on a completely empty stomach only, by itself, and for someone digesting a poorly combined meal that can take 12 hours. His food combining method is all wrong , it leads to muscle loss not fat loss. Calorie counting is imperative for fat loss.

Wow that old myth. No, you can restric calories, exercise like a beast and gain body fat. I was a victim of that during the 80s and early 90s. Caloric restriction leads to elevated cortisol. When cortisol is present, not one calorie is used to fuel, it is l stored as fat. I spent 30 years researching nutrition and wokring as an athletic trainer. Calories are meaningless and restriction only puts the kdy under stress. What you eat and when is what matters.
