Nice video. I have ridden the old turnpike twice with my BIL and the tunnels now have less clutter and glass. My BiL got 2 flats but fortunately we had jumped on at a parking area between the tunnels so not too far to push the bike.BTW, the second tunnel (Sideling Hill) roadway is humped in the middle which obscures light from the other end. Also it is interesting to climb the hill to the tops of the tunnels and see the old ventilation machinery. It’s a good idea to be “packing” as there have known to be sketchy characters hanging out on the road (present company excluded :) )
Every year our summer vacation was to York, Pa from Dayton, Ohio. I always wanted to be notified before going through the tunnels on the Pa Turnpike. I think there were 7, I know that has been decreased (since the 60's/70's). The other thing was the turnpike restaurants and gift shops.
What a great memory! There are still several tunnels was you mentioned which are all pretty awesome! I think that's why it's fun to explore these tunnels now that they're not in use. Cool piece of history!
I literally just went thru Breezewood about 2 weeks ago. Now that we’ve gotten our Lectric eBikes, might have to head back up that way and check out the old turnpike tunnels.
Lynn, just quickly press and release the on/off power button on your bike’s controller to cycle through various display options. I like to have mine display the CURRENT, that way I know how much power is being sent from the battery to the drive motor
A Wraith towing a jeep pulled into a site near me in Pigeon Forge so I thought the WWs were there, but they were from Texas. Always lots of treasures to be found in PA. Nice job.
Cool tunnels. I have have to talk my wife into stopping,on our way to Reading one of days. We have a few cool tunnels here in Wisconsin. Ours is called the Elroy-Sparta bicycle trail.
Mike I would be like you... cold water ankles deep enough for me...however we will only know how cold it was when we see your bride in the water..)) wishing both of you a great week and looking forward to next Monday already!
Been thete plenty of times. Except I always start at the far east end just down from the Cove Valley Service Plaza and about 1 mile from the East end of the Sideling Hill Tunnel. I prefer going in early Spring before the leaves grow back on the trees. It feels much more open and isn't hot out yet. It was between 45 to 55 degrees my first time there in March 2013. There was alot less Graffiti back then.
This was our second time here and we enjoyed riding bikes but walking was nice too. First time was end of December so it was much cooler haha Would have been nice to see it with less graffiti!
@WanderingWagners I Have a playlist called My Abandoned Turnpike Films. If you go to the one labeled as my first trip on the Abandoned Turnpike. You'll see alot less on the walls inside the tunnel
@WanderingWagners Thank you. I have quite a few videos I've done there but mine all mostly stick around Cove Valley Service Plaza parking lot and the Eastern end of Sideling Hill Tunnel.
They have a hard time maintaining roads that are still in service😜 it was easier to walk in vs ride the bikes but we could go much faster and further with the bikes. Still a pretty cool adventure!
Since you have the hotspot for your thermostat you should add a little camera to see what the dogs are up to. Wyze makes a cheap camera that we use. Good theft deterrent as well. We have one pointing outside at the door. Great video! Thanks for all your hard work.
We went through Ohio twice in the last week and Casey's general store had the best TSD pricing by far! They only have a few truck lanes but it was good to see $4 a gallon for diesel.
I have a camelbak that I have used a few time, it is great. Mine is also a normal backpack so I can carry water and treats for the dog. As for the cookies I was thinking I have never heard them called that before and it would be painful to crush them. Just a note I went and looked at some RV's over the weekend some Class A's the Tiffen Diesel was nice. I also looked at a nice Grand Design Reflection, interested to hear what you think of them, I like Mike am a Jayco fan boy but I was impressed with the Grand Design felt on par with Jayco for overall quality but the fit and finish in most places was great, I would like the JaySMART system however, could be a hard choice when it is time to do a thing.
This backpack has plenty of space for snacks and the dog bowl and for water bottles. It's a compact pack for activities which is what I wanted. It can carry water and literally everything else I want😁👍🏻 Mike has a bigger one but we haven't used it yet. Grand design are built the same as any other RV (Staples and glue) but they gave great customer service/warranty guarantee.
Awesome trip and cool tunnels. Come on Lynn WATER? really that could of been all liquor. Lectric bikes for the win. Where are all the crackheads in the tunnel? If Bigfoot is real I am sure he lives out there. lol
How dare you park at a truck stop! 🤣We think Mike has earned a parking pass at any truck stop with all his years of service 😉 We are all about this tunnel!! This is going on our list for sure! Fun video! 😁
Haha right?! We were happy to finally be able to go through the 2nd tunnel! There is a 3rd one but it's not open to the public. Mike said that nascar ands other car manufacturers use it to test the aerodynamics of cars
Bringing out the fragrance!!! LOL. We have to get the Waggle system so we can know Nikki is safe. Way things have been lately with the RV we don’t trust anything. LOL Def should have filled the water bladder with Miller high life!!!
It's an interesting place but whether or not it's a must see, I don't know. There's lots of places I can go see graffiti. Now if there's a trout stream along that road that may be a different story. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
That could be said for anything but we enjoy off the beaten path things and Abandoned places. We could care less about the graffiti and that's not why it's a must see to us. Old, abandoned places are just fun to explore in general to us, and many others!😁 same way we aren't interested in a trout stream, doesn't make it any less of a must see for you and others that do enjoy it!👍🏻
If we are at the home base, we put them down because we are in and out of it a lot. If we are just stopped overnight we leave then up most of the time.
Great video! Question for Mike, got a 05 avalanche 5700 lb rockwood mini lite, got alot of bounce in truck when hitting a bump, any suggestions? Shocks? What would you recommend?
Does the trailer sit level when hitched up? You may have too much or too little tongue weight. It wouldn't hurt to weigh the trailer and buy (or make) a tongue weight scale and go from there.
I’m just curious I’m out here in Northern California I’ve never been to Pennsylvania. Why is this turnpike abandoned. Have they built a new section along the old one and the old one is just being used for bikes and hiking now?
Yes, they abandoned a section of the turnpike because it was only 2 lane but when the traffic demand was higher, instead of making this wider, they just built new sections instead because it was easier than going through more mountains again. The PA turnpike has quite a few tunnels and I think they just didn't want to expand it in mountains again vs building new road.
Where was Mikey? Who was filming you when you asked where he was? One of you eluded to having had driven a truck for 16 years? Did you travel together over the road and are you both retired now? Stay safe, have fun.
What was the time stamp because I don't recall asking him where he was ever and it was just us filming. Mike was a otr oo truck driver for 16 years and currently works as training manager at a truck driving school. Unfortunately not retired😊 I work at a nuclear power plant but I would take vacation days to travel around the country with Mike in the truck sometimes.
@@WanderingWagners , no worries. You mentioned something about a curb. Not sure if I can add a photo to this comment section but it isn’t that important. I enjoy a good mystery.
Trying to sign up for the TSD card, they want my SSN. Does that sound right? Just a little skeptical? I run a slide in truck camper, will this apply to my 6.7?
Yes, that's normal and it's legit! We wouldn't recommend it otherwise😊 You need to fill up at the semi truck pumps to use the TSD card. They are still working on making it available up front and for gas.
There are some state parks in the area and this time we stayed at cowans gap state park. We have a video on it if you're interested! It was 30-45 mins east of Breezewood turnpike

We kept towards the middle of the road where less road crud was. Luckily the lights helped a lot! No worries as we are always packing😎
Bikes paid for themselves on that one. 👍
That's for sure!!
Another great one, be safe out there. 😜😜

Drove and road through those tunnels many times going from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh. PA turnpike had 7 tunnels at one time.
Pa turnpike still has quite a few tunnels along the way
Loved this! Great to see more footage of the bikes!
Thank you! The bikes really earned their keep this trip😁
Always excellent to see explorations in these abandoned areas. Bikes were perfect for this one!
It was fun to see it in the summer vs winter too! The second tunnel was worth the extra milage😁

I drove through those tunnels in the late 50s. Most if not all the rest areas were Howard Johnson restaurants Fried clams).
Pretty cool you remember driving through them!
They must go through and clean up some once in a while. Be safe.
I'm sure someone does but probably not often. You could see a lot more of the trash when we were there in the Winter when the vegetation was dead
