    A flyaway is one of the most terrifying things a drone pilot can face and even though they are rare, they can shake your confidence in your ability to fly your quad. In this clip I explain some of the mechanical issues that can lead to a flyaway and show you how to correct them so you have a safe and stress-free flight. Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks again for watching!

    A great lesson (or 3) about the care and feeding of these little marvels! My Mavic Air 2 is almost 2 years old, and I've never before today done a close prop inspection; after all, it's never crashed or splashed. Apparently I did trim a tree at one time, however. After watching your video, I did that inspection and found one nicked blade and another with a broken tip. All four had varying cases of the floppsies. Four new props installed, and I'm anxious to go fly later this afternoon. Thanks for the really well done clips.

    Been flying a cheap S162 drone for a while. Put new blades on, took off, gps kept the drone in place in the air then the drone started moving around on its self, went up a couple of feet and then started drifting on its side at quite an angle as going the same direction as the light wind. Pressed auto land and came crashing down onto its side breaking two arms. Spent 3 days replacing all 4 arms and motors which arms and motors come as one. Looking at testing today and I'll let you know the outcome. Thank you for your time and wishing good health for you and your family

    Good video, I had a flyaway with my Mavic pro 2 the other day and haven't found it yet. I was using Drone Deploy doing a roof inspection of a Commercial building in Bedford, PA. I calibrated the compass before flying went through drone deploys checklist and hit start. Working fine the battery started to die so I hit Rth and it came back for it's battery swap and sent it back out. Again the battery became low, but right after I hit rth, my phone said "lost signal". I looked down and tried to reconnect with out any luck. I looked back up to see what it was doing it was nowhere to be seen.
    It was a large roof/building but I knew exactly where it was prior to losing signal. An employee told me they saw a drone flying in the opposite direction of my home point. All I can figure is either it fell out of the sky and someone picked it up or it flew away.

    Love your videos, very informative. I heard you explain how Loctite works which was incorrect. Loctite is an anaerobic glue as opposed to super glue which is an aerobic glue. Anaerobic glues set up when there is no oxygen present. Take a new bottle of loctite and notice the bottle has air in it above the loctite fluid. Now open the bottle and squeeze all of the air out while leaving the liquid inside, now cap it. Come back to it tomorrow and see what you have. That’s right, a solid bottle of loctite that is all set up and cured. Anaerobic adhesives all do this. It has nothing to do with heat nor pressure!

    Hello Rick, love your videos on the batteries and props condition and health very informative but I do have a question I charge my batteries in the Fly more two way charging hub that they were shipped in. It may be backwards but it works for me as I wish they were numbered as far as the batteries go but what I do is basically if the led charge indicators are pointing up it may be backwards but the one on the far right I called that number one the middle number two and the far left number three so I try to keep that as a reference but what I do is after charging I leave them in the two-way charging hub is that a good practice or a bad practice which I then keep in my fly more case?

    Really waiting for your part 3. I have a few drones and one of them is an jjrc X9 P I also had the same problem with the x 9. It seems to be completely electrical interference problem. In certain places the Drone will be up in the sky and just start acting like someone else is controlling it. My latest thinking on this is that for some reason it's losing GPS satellites when it gets very low on GPS satellites it does not switch into altitude hold mode it actually goes crazy. If you were smart enough and we're able to switch it into altitude hold mode then you would have manual control back. I think it's a flaw in the programming where it drops below say five satellites and then it just starts to act very strange. The last fly away it was hovering about 20 feet above me and pretty much directly above me everything was fine all of a sudden it started to go straight up and I was not pushing up. I tried to push down and nothing happened and then it started to go off towards the trees I have zero control. Before that it was calibrated and the satellites were locked in and everything was fine. Any ideas?

  • @ChuskyXX
    @ChuskyXX 4 года назад +1

    Wires are very important too. I almost lost my mavic because of a defective usb wire between controller and smartphone (or crystal sky, my case). Screen freezes and you lose image and metrics. App takes control over the controller, so you can't get reliable metrics on the mavic controller. Solution: Unplug the wire and take back the drone only with the controller.

    Rick, I feel the title is a little misleading. OK mechanical issues you can avoid, doesn't sound much different than other videos but I'll watch. What I saw was mechanical/electrical issues that CAN CAUSE a flyaway as well as HOW this can contribute to the problem. A most entertaining and informative video that you did your usual excellence in explaining to us. Thank you.

  • @dennisbrooks240
    @dennisbrooks240 3 года назад

    Rick, What about flyaway's over water? Do you have floatation balls from Drone Valley for the MINI's to put down on the water to avoid a flyaway in too much wind?

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  3 года назад

      Dennis, thanks for the post and we have tested a lot of the flotation devices and are not fans of them for several reasons. First, even though it sounds like a great safety device, the prop wash when landing causes a lot of the water to splash up on the quad. If this is salt water, it's corrosive and can cause real issues with the electronics and camera. Also, the VIO sensors on the bottom of the quad are either blocked or hampered by the mounting. Even if you find one that is somewhat clear, the actual VIO technology is confused by reflective surfaces (water) and could present issues when landing and taking off. I'd steer clear of them and feel like it's a great idea on paper that just doesn't pan out in practice. We 'll never sell anything we haven't tested and won't use ourselves on the site. If we find one that works better, I'll post a clip on the channel. Rick

    the smart controller needs a feature to tell the pilot signal strength, pilots have no clue when the drone will lose connection to the remote and gives no warning when its about to lose connection which is dangerous

    • @Dronevalley

      I agree with you and that would be really helpful in avoiding loss of signal. I'm always watching the signal strength display but when you get more than 1500 feet out it can get a little stressful. Thanks for the post and I hope you'll sub the channel so you don't miss any updates. Rick

    Are the Mavic Mini & Mini 2 batteries the same batteries ?

      They are not. The mavic mini battery will work in the mini 2 but the mini 2 battery is too long to fit in the mavic mini.

    Actually you can build big enough kite to lift a person. It was done in ancient China, loooong before hot-air balloons. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man-lifting_kite

    I guess scuba divers are pretty good drone pilots. They know their risk assessment :-) Glad you made the analogy at 1:40 :-)

    Great info but the title says 'Mavic Mini Flyaway" and I didn't see or hear anything about the Mavic Mini specifically, again great info but as someone researching the mini...........

      Thanks for the post and I started the series with details about the Mavic Mini and all of the things I discuss in Part 2 apply to the Mini and most other drones as well. The challenge with the Mavic Mini is that it has a lot of the features of bigger drones but it's smaller size (and weight) can get pilots into trouble pretty quickly. I'll have a Part 3 in this series posting this week so be sure to check out Part 1 and stop back for the next one as well. Thanks, Rick

      I enjoyed the content and as an instructor the presentation was perfect! However as a youtube lurker the title was slightly misleading.

    Hi Rick. First of all, thanks for these clips, I’m amazed at your knowledge. I’m 55 and just got into drones and I love this hobby! I researched and agonized for a month before deciding on the mavic air. Well, I had no business in sport mode but just couldn’t resist. I sport moded it right into tree. So, I bought a couple cheaper drones to learn with. The beast flies pretty good but the bugs 2se is crazy. It takes off and the motors go to full speed. It goes higher than I’ve ever been and then just leaves. It does this every time. Could it be the transmitter? I know you can’t answer all questions but if you get a chance, I would appreciate it.
    Thanks Rick,
    Tim

    As always, Rick, excellent advice. I hope you are working on battery guards for the Evo 2. I always keep my extra Mavic Mini batteries in the battery pouches I bought from Drone Valley...so I don’t need guards. Thanks.

      I actually have a shipment of them heading our way next week and will update the website when they arrive. I got a few to test and have been using them myself and they work great. I really appreciate your business and hope you're having fun with the new Evo 2. Rick

      Drone Valley Great, Rick! I’ll watch your website for the battery guards. I would also like to see prop stabilizers, ND filters and range extenders for the Evo 2. Now range extenders may not be needed with the Evo since they can fly 5.5 miles, I don’t really know. But always looking for ways to keep my drone flying secure. Thanks!
