Good video! In the newer version of the Attitude indicator (that I have on my Mini 4 Pro) the attitude indicator can also be adjusted so that it is “Controller Centric” instead of its default setting of “Drone Centric” as shown in this video. In this setting the controller (and pilot) are in the center of the indicator instead of the drone, making everything relative to the position of the pilot. I find it more useful in this mode because it’s easier for me to figure out where the drone is with respect to me and what direction it is facing.
Hey Rick, thanks for the informative video re the new DJI Fly Attitude Indicator. One thing you didn't mention however was the description of the attitude icon dynamic output. The outermost ring of the attitude icon represents power output. It indicates the ratio between current output power and maximum output and shows whether the aircraft output is full loaded. (Only displayed in sort mode) If the outer ring turns red, it indicates that the output is saturated which often happens when the wind is high, speed is fast or when it is necessary to decelerate or land a fast as possible. In addition, it is normal when the value is less than 100%.[This ínfo' I received from DJI directly in response to a query that I put to them in an email recently.] Thanks again for all your helpful videos/tutorials.
Great tutorial as usual, thanks. I love the new Attitude Indicator, because the one in the middle was rarely accurate for me, so when I would loose sight of it, I got into the habit of pointing the drone towards me on the map and flying the orange line, and then would glance at the altitude and distance to help me spot it as it was getting closer.
I put up my bebop2 drone on a very quiet Banna Beach, Kerry Ireland one day, It was very breezy but after the drone was up and away, a thick fog came in and I totally lost sighht of the drone, furthermore the wind had the camera lens covered with sand so I could not see with the drone. I did just as Rick had said, fly one way, then the other and saw my distance getting closer on the display until it started going away from me again. It had passed me but at a small distance out. So eventually I managed to bring it home none the worse for wear. That was with basic distance indicator on a bebop2. So must check what version I have now on the Mini1 and the Mavic Pro3. Great informative Video Rick, keep up the good work.
Again, nice presentation Rick. Dji should place the Home Point behind the blue circle Pilot and not the other way around, you can't see where you are pointing.
I recently got my Mini 2 ... and holy crap, I think you may have answered one of my questions: "how can I tell how windy it is where my drone is actually at rather than where im at?" ... before the app warns me. This is invaluable. Thanks a ton! Im still working on getting more comfortable w/ flying it further away from me ... its highly unnerving lol
I have gotten so much good information from this channel than probably any channel. This was a good explanation of the change to attitude display. That being said, I knew nothing about proper care and use of the lipo batteries when I got my first drone. I learned the proper way to use and store those batteries here on this channel. I have the 3 original batteries I got when I got the spark, they don’t seem to have lost any power and they have been charged and used hundreds of times by now and are over 3 years old. Same with my mav air 1, still using original batteries and they still act as if they were new. THANK YOU!!!
Thank you for the comments on using the indicator, I am new to the sport and have many times lost sight of where the drone is at and have learned to use the maps and indicator to figure out where the thing is going. Thanks again for the comments on using it as it has helped me alot.
Glad to help! It's a great hobby and there's a lot to learn. I'll have a few more clips posting this week on drones and other tech so be sure to stop back. Rick
Thanks Rick.... not only are my favorite geek of ALL Geeks, But you’re the best and in-depth Researcher on geeky stuff I’ve EVER known..... Thanks again for being the Greatest at just getting the important stuff to a guy like myself !!!!!!! Blessings to y’all 🙏
I like the N indicator as it allows you to make sure you have calibrated the compass properly and you are able to see the direction it's pointing is actually the direction its facing. I had a flyaway where there was a YAW error and the drone was pointing west but thought it was pointing east. I got it back in the end but scary none the less
Thank you Rick! I just bought a new Mavic Air 2 . My first Drone. Your chanel is a great start to educating myself with piloting my Drone safety and hopefully avoid any costly mistakes.
Another great update. You mentioned hitting the joy sticks when you’ve lost sight so you eye picks up movement. Yes but also turn on the belly light and it will be much easier to spot as it moves about. Thanks.
Great video Rick. For many the RC creates magnetic interference with your phone (especially if used in the cradle) I have spent a lot of time trying to calibrate the compass while in the RC holder, flip it over etc, but to no avail. This means the indicator showing whether the controller is pointing at the drone is not reliable. I run a Samsung S9 and the Mini 1. What I have conceded to do is with a normal compass before I take off find grid north and just make a note of a land mark in that direction. Then keeping the map in north mode ( not compass mode so it doesn't spin) if I ever lose sight of the drone I line the controller up with my North landmark and on the map can quickly see the accurate direction I need to turn relative to the drone to be pointing the antennas at it. Seems to work well. I appreciate the old radar would fair no better as it's a phone compass interference thing but quite ironic it's the DJI component that causes it!
Nice explanation. Thank you. A trick I use to help me to spot my Air2 when I lose sight of it is to switch on the LED under the craft and press the stick forward or backward and that makes the light blink.
This was excellent! I have been testing this because I am older and I lose sight of the drone in the bright sky, clouds and trees in the background. I can lose sight of it even though it is not that far away. This system enables me to locate and return the drone safely. I did not fully understand the "attitude" indicator completely until this video so I will need to pay more attention. Thanks Rick. 🤗
Excellent explanation. I have my first drone ordered, a mavic mini, and have never flown a drone before. Digesting as much information as possible before the first flight. Thanks for the great information.
Thanks and it's always great to hear that you're enjoying the clips. I have a lot of flying and sharing my experiences. I'll have a few more clips this week on drones and other gear so I hope you'll stop back. Rick
I think it might have made more sense to more people if the pilot/home point were stationary around the edge of the circle, with the arrow (drone) rotating around to show direction, at least in my mind. I like using the map better anyway for that, but that new feature is still cool.
I’m gonna get out and practice because I lost my orientation while out flying this afternoon and ended up hitting the RTH...Usually I would just follow the red directional line in map view to bring my drone back to me. Thanks for the info I’m gonna get out tomorrow and work with this information.
Very useful video and display. I would like to see: 1. The option to lock North, so the drone arrow turns and therefore makes is easier to see the direction of flight. Alternatively, E, S and W should be added so the pilot doesn't have to think about East or West. 2. The option to make it slightly larger.
I was recently in Toronto Canada visiting and flew the drone in a deep valley, could not see it at all. Then realized this altitude feature was not there, so i had to rely on my instincts to get the drone safely back in my hands. Got some beautiful shots but was stressful. I have a DJI Mavic Air 2.
Short and sweet. Actually, I think this is one of your best videos. Positive, upbeat and informative. But you subtly admit that No one pays strict attention to VLOS. You can't. There is no way that you would know the attitude of your drone at 500-1000 feet. So this video is really important.
Best description of that indicator I have seen. Extremely helpful and easy to understand. Now it makes sense to me. Thumbs up and subscribed. Thank you.
Thanks for the post and I'm glad it helped explain the Attitude Indicator. I like it a lot and think it helps me better understand my drone is doing in the air. Stay tuned for more content this week. Rick
Thank you for this video on this important change to the app. Your advice is sound to update and practice before figuring it out in the air! Thanks for your helpful videos Rick.
I’m a newbie and am a bit confused. If one of the main rules is to always have a line-of-sight, what’s the need for the aircraft to be capable of traveling several miles, and having this attitude and location map to navigate if you lose sight? Thanks for your excitement in the sport and your valuable explanations!
You dont have to fly by sight, but it has to be in your sights range i guess you could say. So if a small plane or a skydiver anything is coming down you can see happening around your drone.
Excellent video, learned a lot. I really like how you don't repeat yourself, just give the information, and quickly too, like drinking out of a fire hose. I'm enjoying all your videos. Thanks, Bo
Awesome info and I didn’t know about this as I just bought my mini two last week but I have a spark and it didn’t have any of this info. Now I do see a line when I flying and I see the flight path as well so I’m wondering if that red line is the direction of the controller.
Wow Rick great info, wish I has seen this a few days ago, I have only had my DJI mini 2 for 7 days now and I'm very new to all of this, so about 3 days ago I put the drone up at sunset to get some video and pictures of Superstition Mtn here in Mesa, AZ., everything was going good got some nice shots but all of a sudden I took my eyes off the drone and was watching my phone while I did a slow orbit that only took about 45 seconds and when I looked back up I could not see the drone. I moved the drone around a little bit to see if I could pick up on its movement but no luck, at this point I got real nervous, I started to fly it back to what I thought was in my direction but was not seeing or hearing it. By now I had no idea where it was at so I had to rely on the RTH button, I just stood there for what seemed like forever and could at last hear a faint sound of the drone, then it got louder and I could now see my drone directly over my head making a slow decent, once it got about 10ft above the ground I canceled the RTH and landed it manually. In just that short time I took my eyes off the drone to do the slow orbit the sky had lost just enough light that I could not see the drone and it was not dark out by any means, Lesson learned. Thanks Rick for all the great videos you do and the time you must put into them. Happy & safe flying.
Dave, I'm glad you got it back and the first time you use the RTH button it can be nerve-racking. I call it a "push and pray" feature. It always finds its way back home. I'm also glad the clip helped and I'll have a few more posting this week so be sure to stay tuned. Rick
I totally agree and that would be super helpful when you have lost sight of your drone (panic moment) and you really need to focus more on the Attitude Display to get it home safely. I'll pass that along to DJI and see what they think. Rick
The problem from my standpoint is when the Home point is superimposed on the pilot position indicator (and that happens pretty quickly once the drone is any distance from you), I can't see the little blue triangle indicating direction, it gets covered up. Major flaw.
Thank you Rick for another great video. What is this crazy talk in the beginning about reading the release notes? Read the instructions before proceeding what is this blasphemy? LOL we could all do a little reading of the instructions before proceeding. Thanks for the timely reminder as always LOL looking forward to another successful Drone Valley Family year.
Excellent. But need more explanation ,what happened to the icons in the Radar.secon ,to explain if the rc is in the center. But this video excellent and give the basic understanding of the Altitude indicator and why this is the name
After I downloaded the new software Ver. I was kind of intimidated with the new radar display but after I watched your video everything makes sense and the attitude feature is needed it specially when we no longer see the drone in the Horizon but I think what it confuse me is the blue Icon the drone is still no turning since we are the pilot I think it should shows turning so we would make our point of return a lot easy but it is what it is and we just need to get used to it , I am flying my drone in a limited air space until I won´t freak out no seeing it. Thanks for the new features explanation ..
What happens if my Air 2S is set to a max distance of 2000ft. What will the drone do when it reaches the limit ? I have also had several situations where the yaw would not move when I lost sight of drone as was indicated on map, even though safety feature was correct in menu. I wonder if there might be something going on when it reaches my set maximum. Unit did RTH when battery was low.
Thanks for this info. I cannot access this feature on my iPhone XS screen. The arrow in the map view is behind the aircraft's height data and I cannot get it to activate it by touch. Make the map larger and the arrow goes away. Any suggestions how to access the attitude feature so I can adjust mine mine from totally frustrated?
Does your display get the controller's heading information from the controller or from your device attached to the controller? To rephrase: Does the controller have a compass sensor inside it? The reason I ask is that you can easily calibrate the compass on your phone as part of your preflight but I don't know how to calibrate a compass sensor that might be inside the controller.
Thank you Rick, your awesome Brother, you did a Great Service explaining, how to use, And how it can make us a better pilot. Thank you Brother. Sincerely your freind from Mo Rick and God bless you and your family and are Great Country, and Drone Valley
Be aware that the the latest update has an error of 90 degrees for the blue dot. This error seems to be caused by the DJI Fly latest update. I have a couple videos demonstrating this error and have many confirmation from other pilots the the tip indicator on the blue dot points 90 degrees to the side insted of at the drone. This error means that the pilot CANNOT know the direction of where the drone is. This is a serious error that needs to be corrected by DJI. Most pilots, including myself, would prefer that DJI go back tyo the old compass indicator which did show the correct direction of the drone and was easy to use.
Just a pity that DJI chose to put the homepoint icon on top of the controller icon, so when the drone is any distance away and the display scales to suit, the controller icon is obscured so you can't see which way to point your antenna as the tiny blue pointer is covered by the home icon 😥
@@KaneLono Yes it does, but you have to be aside like 15-20 feet or sometimes a bit more (30) As a rule I always step clear from my home point after launch for several reasons.
Hi Rick, new suscriber to your channel. Really enjoy your content as you are Old School just like myself. Have just got into flying drones and have just purchased a Mavic Pro 2 a few days ago which I am absolutely amazed with. Great video, keep up the good work. Mick, Northern Ireland 👍🍻
I like the compass, except for the fact that you can easily lose where your drone is. Sure, you can point it back at H and get it home - but from which direction! It's okay if you always know where North and South are, as you will be able to roughly locate your drone in the sky, but with the old compass you could know instantly where it was and point your antennae at it. On a couple of occasions, I have been flashed the "weak signal" error message, and it's been trial and error in my locating where the craft is headed. The problem is that moving the controller does nothing, since everything is relative to the craft. Even when you move the craft to point back at H it isn't immediately clear on the compass where you are on the ground in relation to it. It would be fine and dandy if you were actually on the drone, then the compass would make sense. I hope that DJI address this problem in the next firmware update.
Great information and made good sense. I FINALLY bought and own a DJI MAVIC MINI 2. I have yet to launch it, everything charged up, just need to find the time and plenty of space to test drive. Your tips of attitude and all the dynamics of flying are very important and good to know, or else I would be in big trouble. Thank you and I have Subscribed for more helpful tips!
I am wondering if I can use DJI 4 with my smart controller. And is it better? I would love to have instructions on how to use DJI4. It's on the controller but does not seem to work.
l am very new to drone flying I have a dji mini. What I would like to know is what all the terms are. ie ftb is there somewhere I can go to find out what you pilots are referring to.
I like the new compass on the new update. I also like the bars to show the angle of the drone!! I have another question I see you have a bee bop 2 in the background I still fly that drone. Can you suggest what 3th party battery would be a good choice to purchase!!
You are the clearest most concise speaker on this subject. I could listen to you talk for hours. Never an Um or a uh. Not once. Well done.
True!
Agreed!
Good video! Rick, I use the compass as an indicator to keep an eye where I am in reference to wind direction in UAV forecast.
Eric, good thinking and that would help. I think it's great that they include it but have just never used it for navigation.
THIS IS A GREAT INPROVMENT FOR ME . MY DIR INDICATER RARELY WORKED.
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK SIR !!!

Just got myself a DJI MP2. I have learnt so much from listening & watching your videos. THANK YOU.
Great video Rick. For many the RC creates magnetic interference with your phone (especially if used in the cradle) I have spent a lot of time trying to calibrate the compass while in the RC holder, flip it over etc, but to no avail. The new attitude indicator is pretty neat, but I wish they put it in the center bottom of the display where the old compass indicator was located.
It's a lot more fun to come to your channel and have you educate me on the subject
I watched this video when it first came out, but was very happy top revisit it today and have my brain updated. Thanks for posting.
I do like all the information that the update has, However, I would like it to be in the center where it was.
agreed
yes me too
Yeah mate same her. I’d rather have the map on the left where it is and the compass back where it was so your not switching between the two.

Clear, concise, easy to understand. Nice job.
Glad it was helpful! I'll have more content posting this week so be sure to stop back soon. Rick
Thanks!
Thanks very much for the support! I'm glad you found the clip helpful and I have a lot more content posting soon so please be sure to stop back. Rick
I need the compass to head to a certain point on my property because DJI hasn't had the firmware updated so I can use waypoints on my Mavic Air2.
Great video and explanation., better than others have explained it!
Great update Rick... more information is more power of the drone...thanks Rick
Good explanation of a very nice new feature.
Thanks very much for you tips of the attitude and compass .very clearly the expren😊
Great video as always, is there any update on the battery discharge issue.
Great info, have not got a DJI drone but many things mentioned apply to any drone.👍
Glen, you're right. These are details that can be really helpful in flying any drone and are critical aids in getting the quad back home safely.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you for taking the time to go over the update.
Very energetic, perfect explanation. Thank you
Just a pity that DJI chose to put the homepoint icon on top of the controller icon, so when the drone is any distance away and the display scales to suit, the controller icon is obscured so you can't see which way to point your antenna as the tiny blue pointer is covered by the home icon 😥
yeah.. its stupid
Just move off to the side a bit. It should separate and you'll then have visual of both.

Nope.
Does not work.
@@KaneLono
Yes it does, but you have to be aside like 15-20 feet or sometimes a bit more (30)
As a rule I always step clear from my home point after launch for several reasons.
Love the videos Rick!
Good job Rick,tom in michigan🥶15 degrees this morning,have a safe day!👌
I like the compass, except for the fact that you can easily lose where your drone is.
Hi Rick..am comfortable using the 1.2.4 version on my mini 1 should i update to the latest version.
Would be nice if they'd add the horizon indicator the the GO 4 app as I use that map feature frequently.
Love the new background, friend.
Love your videos; as always!
Thanks. Great video this will help me a lot with my new mini 2.
l am very new to drone flying I have a dji mini.
Greetings from Cyprus. Great informative video Rick. Thanks for your effort! Cheers
Happy new year Rick I’m fine with the attitude indicator the more detail more information is better for us but also
Thanks for stopping by and I agree. I want to know all I can about how my little guy is doing up in the air.
Yet another great information session from Drone Valley. Thanks Rick.
