My grandpa and dad were Shriners, so I grew up around all those fine gents, and they really were a bunch of great guys. I nearly died laughing the first time I heard Ray's Shriner's Convention. Maybe it's cause of how I grew up by my lord that was a side-splitter for me. Anyway, because of that song I bought his record album, still have it, and it led me to the wonderful world of Ray Stevens.

True story, In 1985, When I just arrived at basic training at Ft. Jackson S.C., my drill Sgt. Asked me where I'm from. I told him "PASCAGOULA MISSISSIPPI." He looked at me funny like and said, "Ain't that where that squirrel went crazy in a church?"
I told him yes, "I guess so." He said he didn't think that was a real place and that I was "messing with him".
He actually went and got a map and made me show him where it was.

I loved Ray Stevens. He has done both serious and ones that crack you up. If I remember right he also did one called "Sitting Up With the Dead" and the one the kids loved... "Ahab the Arab". He has had so many wonderful songs both serious and funny. It used to be that people would sit up with the deceased to pay respects and say goodbye. You can hear a lot of good music from Ray Stevens.

When I was 10yrs old my family took me to a holiness revival. I had to go to the bathroom, and when I was leaving the pew I fell down in the isle. Everyone thought I was "slain" in the spirit and started praising God...I just laid there for a minute or two then got up and went to the bathroom.

I loooove this song! I had forgotten all about it. It was popular in the 1970s. Love Ray Stevens. He sang a lot of funny songs, as well as a couple of "straight" (not humorous) hits. He had other humorous hits like "Guitarzan" (he even voices Jane & the "chimp" as well) and "The Streak." (Streaking was a fad in the 70s. People, usually guys, running through a public event NAKED, often getting away before anyone knew what had happened. Across football fields, and in the gymnasium during the senior play in my high school! Love your videos, brother!

He also did "Misty" (another serious song). Most of the stuff he recorded was original, but one song mentioned above "Along came Jones" was originally recorded by The Chords in the mid 50s. Stevens had a summer replacement TV show in the late 60's or early 70's about the time "Gitarzan" was on the charts.

I can't stop laughing! First of all, Ray Stevens' video of the "Mississippi Squirrel Revival" _always_ makes me laugh. And then your little comedy skit at the end! Wow! That was hilarious! I had tears rolling down my cheeks. "You shouldn't have been in the way!" "I almost killed my grandmother!" I'm still laughing as I type this.
This fight or flight thing isn't confined to one ethnic group. My white mother -- who absolutely adored me -- would have left me to fend for myself if a squirrel, spider, wasp or whatever got in the room. In the 50s, Mother and her BFF were sitting at the kitchen table having coffee and yakking. Her BFF noticed a spider on Mother's shoulder, pointed to her shoulder and said, "Hon, you have a spider on your shoulder." That's all Mother needed to hear! With both hands, she grabbed BFF's wrist and used her hand to get that spider off of her, screaming bloody murder the entire time! This is still a family story that still elicits guffaws after all these decades. :D

I loved this. I was very little when I first heard it, and yes it does remind me of the churches and tent revivals. 😂

When I was 11 my father got the call he dropped everything put his trust in the Lord and packed the family and what we could fit in the truck and drove from Alaska to Missouri so he could go to school to become a minister. Several years later he started preaching, and that is when I at 14 got to see how corrupt some churches are. My father always prepared those sweet pat you on the back sermons, would get up to preach and stumble and stutter. This would go on until he folded up his sermon and suddenly the hellfire and brimstone tent preacher came out. He would get fired up walk the aisles preaching never looking up just looking at his bible. At dozens of churches after the sermon the deacons would come up tell him what a fantastic sermon it was, how filled with the spirt it was, and then say, DONT COME BACK.
This song came out when my father was having a hard time motivating himself after so many rejections, so many nasty letters to the University, and having no income. A week after hearing this song he got called to go preach at a church that was about to close, his was to be the last sermon at the church. He spent all week putting together an amazing sweet sermon about parting and being strong. This song was on the radio just as we pulled into the church lot, we went in and dad forgot the sermon on the dash of the car. It was the first time he ever went without having his sermon in front of him, and it was the best sermon my father ever gave. Now some 40 years later that church is the biggest most fired up in the county, with a young firebrand preacher that was a boy sitting in one of those pews. My father passed before seeing the impact of that sermon on that area, and those families. To this day people still come up to me and remind me of what and who my father really was, and I laugh and say you have no idea. Most who were not there have no idea how he actually acted, or that he was a man who had flaws, sins, and temptations like the rest of us, yet for all his many flaws, he had love, and willingly let himself go and let the spirt preach. My father not once ever took credit for any sermon he preached, because as I knew he was not the one doin the talking.
