Thanks for the video! It was very well researched. As hakurou46 says, the strafe firing is deliberate. I didn't want to make a twin stick shooter where you just circle strafe everything, as I enjoyed how in Operation Carnage you needed to think through every split second when and where you can afford to stop firing to change your direction, making it more intense. I knew not everyone would like it, but it was the game I wanted to make. In hindsight I wish Pitch's name and basic design wasn't such an obvious copy of Princess Peach, eventhough that was originally the joke. :p
Thanks for stopping by! Major props for designing the strafe firing in such an enjoyable way. I've disliked it in the past, but this was such a blast to play through dozens of times making this video 👍
I hated the restriction in the past, in games like Llamatron (which actually had a twin stick option, but only single player). Back then, I was annoyed by it because there were so many games which had annoying restrictive controls when all I really wanted was the ability to rotate while moving. Not even twin stick style - using the triggers or two face buttons for rotation was good. For example, the Genesis version of Forgotten Worlds had two buttons for rotation. And yet, most games like Cannon Spike would consistently fail to deliver that option. They'd invariably have more annoying obtuse control schemes with restrictive capabilities. Ever since Geometry Wars, though, there has been a proliferation of true twin stick shooters. So nowadays, there's plenty of games to chose from which offer independent movement and aiming. It's no longer an annoying pet peeve.
Having spent way too many nights playing Melee with Remar at 3am, I can confirm that the fire-and-strafe movement is intentional; not only to be accurate to Operation Carnage, but also since just... most of Remar's games tend to have some form of movement restriction. In Iji, for example, you cannot fire while crouched (it was in an early build but quickly discarded), and in Remedy you cannot stop firing, which if you've done some of the later areas you know how much you wish you could. Additionally, some fun trivia: The Princess Buster / piledriver has exactly one frame of vulnerability between uses, there are a ton of references to the Touhou Franchise (the first miniboss, Mecha Santa's Deep Freeze, etc), and the rainbow weapon making enemies split into lines like in Operation Carnage was one of the most tricky things to implement (the engine has no support for splitting a sprite like that, which is why they can only split vertically. that's hard coded.)
Can I just say that he was a great inspiration for me back in the day when using Game Maker? His games showed me just how quality a game from that engine could be when the Game Maker forums were filled mostly with Baby's first games. I just wish I had the time and patience to finish my game I started on since.... ugh... probably 2010 or somewhere around there... I was way too ambitious. I still don't know how he managed to pull off half the graphical stuff in this game that was made in... what was it, Gm6? Gm7? Just, if you still have ties to him let him know he's appreciated.

Clint, I have been hearing you doing voice over cameos on The Video Game Historian's videos. That is so awesome! I hope to hear or see you work with him and other RUclipsrs more often!! I geeked out when I heard it the first time! Sad,but yeah still awesome.

With exception of the slightly clunky controls, Iji is an absolute blast, especially if you try to discover all the secrets and storylines. I can't recommend it enough. AND it's free!
A pacifist run of Iji is also incredible and feels more fleshed out then most pacifist modes you see in AAA games. It is not just something you can do to get an achievement, you actually see the game change due to your choice. The game also does not punish you for not playing pacifist (because there are a lot of fun toys and reflecting rockets never gets old).
Aw, no footage of the absolutely obscene, human infeasible secret difficulty, and the absolutely breathtaking TAS that conquers it? But in any case, very well done, and certainly a favorite of mine. Thanks for the review.
Back in university, a guy a few doors down from me had a lot more visitors dropping by his dorm room after winning a _Smash TV_ arcade machine. After graduating, he worked at Digital Extremes for a while.
I love how a lot of Ludosity games are packed full of references to this game, from a character and level being taken from it to multiple characters and cards in card city nights
Nuance, the path to making something random that you did years ago into a thing. So congrats on figuring out a way to add that to the "X-mas Clone" saga you have been doing. It is a thing, that is becoming a thing, that will one day be its own thing.
Are we going to find out "what has to be done", or is the Christmas clone storyline meant to last for years and years. This is more frustrating to wait for than them finally giving answers in Star Wars!!
