Trump had 4 yrs, he didn't fix the border issue...he just says he did and for some crazy reason his base believes it.
There was plenty of chaos at the border during his term, and one of the ways he attempted to stop the flow was by punishing them for daring to ask for asylum. How? By, removing every child from every parent...without a system in place to ever reunite them. Problem was, no one knew about this policy to be deterred, b/c it's was kept hush hush. Not a great deterrent if the only way to find out is by reaching the border and having your child kidnapped. Once this policy was discovered, it was forced to end. Why? B/C it was the most inhumane thing ever done.
And then when covid hit, it allowed him to use emergency powers to basically shut it TEMPORARILY down. He didn't fix the border situation, just bandaids. The Republicans were never going to agree on any bill that Dems put together, the bill had to come from Republicans...finding Dem support is a lot easier.
Finally after yrs upon yrs of very needed immigration reform, the Republicans drafted a bill. The Republicans were happy about the bill, Biden was ready to sign the bill... and then Trump literally said, "you better not". The bill would allow Biden to shut down the border whenever it was overwhelmed, and create stricter asylum guidelines, among many other things.
For anyone who thinks it's too late for Biden, then it super late for Trump.
If Republicans really care about the country and the American people, they will get the bill on the floor for a vote and to Bidens desk for a signature ASAP...otherwise it will be proof, that they have ZERO interest in fixing the problem.
Trump has them thinking he is going to win and on his 1st day, they will put the bill on the floor for a vote and he will be the hero that fixes the border.
That's stupid thinking.... b/c if they wait, the Republicans will lose the upper hand they have right now. The new bill will then be drafted by the Dems, and the Republicans will shut it down....and the border remains broken.
Progress and success will only come from good faith compromise, and we finally had that. Then Trump, for his own selfish reasons....killed all the progress and success. He made it about him and only him...instead of the American people. Thats not how leaders and patriots behave.
