I've heard it said that while Grant was suffering from the cancer, he described the sensation he felt while drinking a cup of water as "pouring a vial of molten lava down my throat" or something along those lines. One of the reasons I adore Grant so much is that this is the time when he was writing his memoirs because he wanted to do anything he could to help provide for his wife after he was gone. The guy was suffering unbelievable agony, knew he was going to die soon, yet he spent 12+ hours a day writing, with no guarantee that it would actually amount to anything, just because he wanted to do anything he could to see to it that his wife had some support after he died. He would sadly die only 3 days after he finished writing and to say that his efforts paid off would be a huge understatement. Grant's memoirs is one the most successful books in American history. Grant is my personal favorite president in American history. He was a hell of a man and his is a legacy that all men should strive to live up to.
Do you know that Grant as commander of the Union force instructed them to burn every farm they came across. Kill, maim (some would r a p e the women) as they marched south after the surrender of General Lee. Regardless of who's side you are on, or what values you believe to be righteous; those acts were heinous and down right demonic. Yes our country survived after the Civil War; but Grant was no saint. Neither side acted noble to be fair, both sides treated POWs with disdain; but Grant did much worse in my opinion, because surrender had done been established; and innocents were brutally attacked.
He was also doing his writing with no painkillers, as the only available one was opium that made him too sleepy and clouded his mind. He'd write for as long as he could bear the pain, eat some bread soaked in milk because it was about the only food he could swallow, and only then take the opium so he could sleep and start over the next day.

My grandmothers 13th birthday actually was on the day that JFK died. She said she was sitting in class, talking to all her friends as they wished her a happy birthday , and the overhead speaker turned on. They announced how the president had just been assassinated and she broke into tears. Even thinking about it every birthday makes her sad. She is currently 71
Oh no a Statist was shot... Oh no... I say this sarcastic stuff because to hold these politicians up on these huge pedestals is basically pseudo religious level nonsense. It is ridiculous.
Polk's last words brought tears to my eyes. He passed peacefully, while being able to spend his final moments alone with his wife of 25 years, whom he professed his eternal love to before going. Nothing else was more important to him in his final moments besides his wife. No doubt the love they had was real, as she stayed a widow for 42 years after until her death. Makes sense why it was the last thing he wanted to say and for her to know before she could never hear him say it again. An incredibly sweet and lovely way to pass.
no death is ever truly ‘peaceful’. everyone will grieve the life on earth they’re getting taken away while they’re dying. but pretty sweet that he got to remind her of his ‘eternal’ love even when he is no more :(
A lot of those presidents died from heart problems or strokes...stress can often be a contributing factor to heart attacks and stroke. That is scary to think. Look at how they aged in just a few years in office. A lot of us like to talk trash about the presidents for not doing a good job, but just take a moment to realize how difficult a job it must be. Being POTUS is like being the single parent of a 3 year old.
The classic example is to take a look at a picture of Lincoln from 1861…then look at one from 1865 You can visibly see this dude put on twenty years in four

Just imagine showing up at the White House with extremely important information for Teddy. “Where is the president?” “Ugh, I dunno.” “WUT” “I think he went hunting somewhere” “When will he be back?” “Maybe tomorrow? Maybe next week? Probably next month.”
I’m glad out of all the Presidents, my boy Theodore got the most peaceful leave of all. Seemingly recovering and peacefully passing in his sleep after one last request to turn out the light. Truly, Death had to wait till he was asleep to take him without a fuss.
He nearly died during an expedition, in which he reportedly actually asked to be left behind to die to improve the odds of the others. That was evidently why he died relatively young, though very fit for most of his life.
Fun fact: Andrew Jackson had a pet African Gray parrot and its said at his funeral, the bird proceeded to swear as loud as possible in front of all the mourning tenants. He caused such a ruckus, he had to be carried out of the house in order for the service to continue.
Man, that sucks. It's hard to tell, but if that bird really loved him, he might have been stressing out from the grief and repeating phrases he had heard.
As Jackson was an avowed racist, I wouldn't be surprised if the bird used the N-word. It prolly heard it a lot from it's owner. Imagine that.....squawking "N*****! N*****! throughout the service for it's dead, scummy owner.

Some medical historians theorize that if Lincoln would not have been shot, he still would not have survived his second term, but would have died of circulatory or heart failure. Have you ever noticed how Lincoln was often pictured with a blanket over his legs to keep them warm? This indicates a serious circulatory problem, which doctors of that time would probably have missed diagnosing.
Yeah they just didn’t have the proper nutrition or medicine to keep a 6 foot+ man alive back then. Also there were a lot of pissed off racists after the war, I think he would have eventually met a bullet.

@@gailbirchall2163 he did not have to do anything. He was part of it. See the RUclips video of a conversation with his mistress. She said he told her that after tomorrow the Irish problem would be over. He was a big womanizer. A creepy thought, but true. I have seen it a couple of times. There is also one where the telephone operator at Parkland Hospital took a call from him asking if the president was dead. He did not say who he was and he did not disguise his voice. Every Texan knew him and his voice. He called three times. From the time this happened when I was 8 years old I always believed he was part of it. That is why Oswald had to die. I have thought for a long time that LBJ, J. Edgar Hoover, and George HW Bush were part of the group. Bush was working with the CIA recruiting Cuban fighters and was in Dallas that day. He was working between Houston and Miami during the week.
@@Maya-bu2rf I totally, totally agree with you, and did not know of the mistress and telephone calls. Oswald had to go, and it was obvious that the shooting of him was staged at the police station. @@gailbirchall2163 I watched a history detectives show where they went into the National Archives and found letters written by Lincoln to get an Army Quartermaster off court martial charges twice. He did it as a political favor and even says he hopes to get votes from Mississippi because of this. He was afraid he would not be re-elected. The Quartermaster was getting Union soldiers onto paddle boats to ship them up the Mississippi River to get them home after the war. This was ten days after the death of Lincoln. The boat was built for about 300 passengers. In his greed he put 2000+ soldiers and some civilians onto a boat called the Sultana. It sank due to overcrowding and about 1800 people died. No one was blamed and charged. The detectives said there was more than enough evidence to impeach Lincoln so they thought he would prefer to be dead! I saw it on Amazon prime tv. I have a friend who was related to Dr. Mudd who helped John Wilkes Booth by setting his leg. What I do not understand is if he had a broken leg how did he get away from the theater? Polk's last words brought tears to my eyes. He passed peacefully, while being able to spend his final moments alone with his wife of 25 years, whom he professed his eternal love to before going. Nothing else was more important to him in his final moments besides his wife. No doubt the love they had was real, as she stayed a widow for 42 years after until her death. That means we just want to share the faith we rejoice in with you as well.

funfact: JFK and Lincoln had many parallels/similarities surrounding them. Here are a few:
Both were elected to congress in '46:
Both were elected to the presidency in '60:
Both have seven letters in their last names ("Lincoln" and "Kennedy").
Both were concerned with civil rights
Both lost a son while living in the White House
Both sons' names. William Wallace Lincoln and Patrick Bouvier Kennedy have 21 letters each
Both were shot on a Friday: Lincoln was shot on Good Friday, April 14, 1865, and Kennedy was shot on Friday, November 22, 1963.
Both were assassinated by Southerners.
John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in a theatre and was caught in a warehouse. Oswald shot Kennedy in a warehouse (Oswald was) and was caught in a theatre.
Both of the presidents' successors were named Johnson: Lincoln was succeeded by Andrew Johnson, and Kennedy was succeeded by Lyndon B. Johnson.
Both were succeeded by Southerners: Andrew Johnson was from Tennessee, and Lyndon B. Johnson was from Texas.
Both of their VPs has the same number of letters in their first and last names
Both successors were born in '08: Andrew Johnson was born December 29, 1808, and Lyndon B. Johnson was born August 27, 1908
Both assassins, John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald, are known by their three names.
Each assassin's full name is composed of fifteen letters.
Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theatre. Kennedy was shot in a Ford car: a Lincoln limousine.

That is so chilling from Grant saying "water" just before his death. That would be such a painful way to die basically slowly being suffocated by a cancerous growth in the throat.
Absolutely true, and I've heard it said that while Grant was suffering from the cancer, he described the sensation he felt while drinking a cup of water as "pouring a vial of molten lava down my throat" or something along those lines.
@Zitsanrael1117 Glad to see another person who feels the same way about Grant, he's the greatest American hero in my books. If you haven't yet, definitely visit the Grant mausoleum in NYC. It is a beautiful building and really moving to be there by him and Julia, but is unfortunately in a state of disrepair and needs the visitors to get the funding to stay in good shape!
