@@sofiandolga I also love The Duke; The Hundred-Foot Journey (though it's set in France); The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (not small budget, and set in India, but it's wonderful); Fisherman's Friends (leans on tropes quite a bit, but great music and fun to watch); also Waking Ned Devine (it's Irish, 25 years old, but a very quirky & lovely story, beautifully acted, also with fabulous music). I wish I could see each of these for the first time - again :).
I saw this woman in a documentary about discovering the Kings resting place. It's insane that they found him as soon as they started digging where she pointed 👀
No, Phillada did not point to the exact spot, the R was there and it became a joke. There was a very careful plan of digging by the archeologists from the University. What Phillada did was raise funds from the Richard society and paid for the license to dig up the car park.
To be fair, Shakespeare wrote his "histories" during the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I, whose families would have (and almost certainly did) benefitted from assassinating Richard III's character posthumously.
The victors write the history. I think one of the things that they were able to put to rest was his reputed hunched back. He did have a spinal deformity but it would have been almost unnoticeable, not the quasimodo that folks portrayed him as.
Dude was literally called to the palace and told "hey, why don't you write a nice fluff piece about our ancestors, we'll pay you and maybe throw in a royal seal for your company". They weren't subtle about it :P.
This film looks fabulous. So happy they made a movie about finding poor Richard. I wondered how in heaven’s name they found him. Sally Hawkins is the perfect choice. She is so amazing. 👍👍👍👍
I think this is pretty close to a true story. I remember reading about the lady who did it. That she became obsessed and eventually wandered into the car park she had tracked it to and just ‘knew’ which space to look under. Man there’s still great stories out there for film.
I vaguely remember a documentary on it where they researched obviously the history of the king from various writings and then the maps and I believe the car park was once part of a monastery or similar and the stories led to the king dying in that monastery and thereby the likelihood that his grave would be there. His bones, when found, did find a form of spinal disfigurement but not as severe as what was depicted. As usual the media of the day exaggerated and lied in order to make those in power come across as the good guys.
Oh deary me, no people it was not a guess, or wandering into a car-park finding R. It was a big news item at the time and the university involved in the dig knew what they were going to find, the remains of the church, they thought that finding Richard's grave, which they knew was buried in the choir, was highly unlikely since the area had been developed many times. No, they did not start digging under R, they started the trench on the other side as they planned. There are very good documentaries and lecturers on youtube about it all, including a very good one about the armor they made for the movie. Looking forward to seeing the movie though.
So do I. I rarely go to movies anymore. But I followed the reports when they believed they had found the location under a parking lot. And then DNA proved it. I've even begun considering that character assassination went on by the Tudors.
This came up while I was scrolling and I was so confused! Turns out it's JUST getting a US release now. Worth the watch, folks...it's not exactly an accurate tale, but it tells a super entertaining fictionalized version of the discovery. I enjoyed it! 😊
I just loved this film. I followed this amazing story with interest as it happened. I was so glad Richard was finally found and given a proper burial. The film really brings this incredible story to life.
That was a favourite of mine in my teens. OK maybe she wasn't 100% accurate but it's still a good read and made many people reconsider the traditional view of King Richard III.
1:02 - *NO WAY!* That dude's a RUclipsr on Scottish history, what a funny little cameo! His channel is called 'Scottish History Tours', and he has just under 200k subs. I recognised him in a split because of the dreadlocks xD
This looks very promising. I love Sally Hawkins. Also, just when I realised Richard III was once Viserys Targaryen, I could have sworn I saw Robert Baratheon as well.
Unfortunately, people forget that Shakespeare’s Histories were never marked as “nonfiction”. 🙄 I read a fascinating (fictional) book about the nonfiction aspects of this film. “The Daughter of Time”. And now this is on my very short watch list!
I Love Sally Hawkins She Is My Greatest And Beatiful Actress Of My Dreams Keep Going Girl You Got it she is My LOVELY ACTRESS OF MY CHILDHOOD ♥️♥️ and I am her Fan
Oh dear God! HRH King Richard comes a visit & is blessed with a proper burial at last! 🙏 God blessed all those Good People who came & helped out! 🕯🌷🌿🌍💜🕊🇬🇧
I knew there had to be more to the story of how they found him. Really? Just happened to dig in the right spot, through a parking lot, after all those centuries.
It is a fascinating story but this film is also a mean spirited hatchet job on the University of Leicester Archaeological services department and its staff based upon the narrative of Philippa Langley and her frankly delusional expectations when it came to the body of Richard III.
Richard III: "A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!" My uncle Moishe: "Meshugge! What, you've never haggled for nothing? Listen and learn: 'What, this horse? I'm not making glue, you know, and I'm not buying schtrops, bubbe. At most you get half a kingdom.' Like that!"
Oh, this is the movie with the huge controversy! The fact that the research was led by the University of Leicester and the journalist tagged along while in the movie it looks like she was the one who went against the tide and find the remains. The tone of the movie seems lovely, though, but I can understand why they are taking legal action.
I watched this with my dad a few months ago. Wasn't sure what to expect, but I really enjoyed it and found it super interesting. Definitely watch it if you can
Love Sally Hawkins! She is an extraordinary actress and completely immerses herself in every role she plays! This one looks like another gem!
She’s good in everything from Layer Cake to Jane Eyre.
Extraordinary indeed, she has a gift and is thoroughly lovable 🙌
She was great in "Shape of Water" without saying a word
The fact he was in fact found under the parking spot marked "R" is amazing
It's like the "X" marks the spot, you know...
I love these quirky small budget British movies. Sally Hawkins and Steve Coogan are both great.
Two of my favs ⭐️
can you please recommend some other quirky small budget british movies? turns out i love this kind of movies too😅

What a perfect actor for Richard, Viserys from GOT! With his black hair he looks more like his Family of Blood character from Dr Who.
