Oscar's Wacky Taxi Review, Sesame Place Gravity Group Wood Coaster | Closed More Than It's Open?

  • Oscar's Wacky Taxi is a Gravity Group wood coaster at Sesame Place. Despite its small stature, this ride packs a serious punch. It features a sea of airtime hills, superb pacing, and an unconventional green paint scheme. But this ride can be frustrating to ride due to its tendency to either open late or be closed entirely due to staffing.

This is, almost literally, a 'backyard theme park' for me; it's only half a mile from my house, so when my kids were younger this was a great place to get season passes. My kids are a bit too old for it now, especially since my youngest has now ridden the big coasters and Knoebels and Hydrus at Casino Pier (with more to come this summer, likely) ... but her first two credits will forever be the Grover Coaster and OWT.
I've always been impressed by this ride; it reminds me of a kiddie version of the Cyclone at Coney Island. I won't guarantee that I'll never ride it again, but even if such is the case, I'll always have a number of rides on OWT as credits.

These GG woodies are amazing! Only did Twister at Grona Lund and it's an ejector machine.
Glad to see this one also has nice airtime pops

Twister has less hills, but its airtime is stronger on average.

I'm so jealous of you east-coast enthusiasts. There are exactly 2 roller coasters that exist within 200 miles of my house, one of which is a Galaxi clone that's almost 40 years old at this point. The metro area around here has a population over 1 million too, so it's not like I live in a small town. There are 4 other coasters in the state, for a total of 6. None of these coasters have any inversions and I think the combined height of all first drops would be less than 200 feet.
Meanwhile, you guys get something like this at a kiddie-park themed as Sesame Street. I'm not exaggerating, if you plopped this guy down in my city it may legitimately become the best roller coaster not only in my State, but within 250 miles. Being an enthusiast here means a lot of road trips haha.

The East Coast is definitely helpful for its park density.

Oscar's Wacky Taxi is definitely a go to. It may be one of the only reasons for a guy like me to go here but it's a good one. This ride packs in so many airtime moments back to back. I think I could absolutely love this thing as I think Kentucky Flyer is one of the best wooden coasters iv ridden. I love these things.

If you like GG coasters, you should go to Ireland and ride the Cú Chulainn coaster at Tayto Park. It has some great airtime and a wicked first drop.

    This ride...
I rode this 7 times during a Tuesday visit in early August of 2018. I don't purchase SeaWorld platinum passes, so this is a hard park to shill money for often. I don't think I'll come to this park again. Not because OWT isn't worth going here for, but actually because of a conglomerate of issues Sesame Place has as a whole.
-Competition with Dutch Wonderland and Storybook Land nearby
    -Glorified kiddie water park
-No good family flats (literally just teacups and nothing else)
    -Annoying branding
-Too expensive (unless you have SWPP)
As for OWT itself, it's great! My main problem with it is that I don't think a fast paced ejector machine fits well at a kiddie water park, and based on how often it's open these days (like you said), I probably would have picked something different from an investment standpoint.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 года назад

If I didn't have a Platinum Pass, I'd stop here a lot less. Especially since it seems like a gamble Oscar's is actually open on days when it wouldn't have a line.

My 2019 visit was a Sunday morning, and it did open with the park. It had no line, so I got 10 laps within an hour. It must have been hauling that morning, because it did have at least one moment of shuffling, but it was worth it for the great airtime, which I thought was stronger than Wooden Warrior or Kentucky Flyer. Of course, my 2021 pit stop on a weekday morning was a bust.

Since I work here, I always study the confusing layout of this ride’s queue. The path is very windy and there are multiple paths leading to the queue under the coaster. Seems like long lines for this ride would be very chaotic!
