Don Shula was almost going to sign up to coach the Green Bay Packers in 1970. It was his late wife who convinced him that Miami had a better school system for their children so he changed his mind and signed up to coach the Dolphins.
Probably had nothing to do with the brutal winters in Green Bay. The "Ice Bowl" was just a few years before. Shula's wife was crafty if that's how she pitched it to Don. I'm from Miami and we all know back then, alot of northerners eventually wound up living in south Florida.
It's been said that Oakland purposely failed to cover their field w/ tarp prior to their playoff gm bc of their fear of Paul Warfield, who scorched them for 120 yards & 2 tds in the earlier meeting, a strategy Shula would use - though he denies it - against the Jets in the 82 AFC championship gm bc of Miami's inability to cover Wesley Walker.
Miami had a dang good season in 70, if they could have held on to the ball better against the Raiders they would have made the AFC Championship game against the Colts.
Boston had the all-pro QB from the year before Joe Kapp as QB so they were heavy favorites. The Patriots ended up 1-9 with Kapp as the QB and he retired.
I was alive in 1970 but I was 4 years old and I learned about betting lines and point spreads about 5 years later but I imagine most Week 1 betting lines favored the home teams.
@@classicsports5057 Boston had a Pro Bowl QB, Joe Kapp was NOT an All-Pro QB in 1969 when he was with the Vikings, Roman Gabriel was the NFL's 1969 First Team All-Pro QB and he was also named the NFL MVP in 1969. Meanwhile over in the AFL in 1969 Daryle Lamonica was the First Team All-Pro AND he was also his league's MVP. Boston WAS NOT a " heavy favorite "! You post a lot of good/great videos but please get your facts straight! Boston did win big, 27-14 but Joe Kapp DID NOT PLAY in the game, Mike Taliaferro, pronounced " Tolliver ", was Boston's starting QB, Joe Kapp SIGNED WITH BOSTON on October 2, 1970 which was 12 days after the Miami at Boston game, Joe Kapp would MAKE HIS PATRIOTS DBUT on October 11,1970 ( Week 4 ) at Kansas City when he came in to relieve an ineffective Taliaferro who had thrown 4 interceptions prior to being pulled from the game, the Chiefs still had Kapp's number as he would only complete 2 of 11 passing attempts for 16 yards and the lone TD Boston scored in their 23-10 loss to Hank Stram's heavily favored Chiefs squad, Kansas City picked off 2 of Kapp's passes to total 6 interceptions. The Patriots only managed to get 6 first downs in the game and the Chiefs defense held them to 29 Net yards passing and 105 total yards on offense. One last factual note, I learned how Mike Taliaferro's las name was pronounced when I was 5 years old, it's explained on the back of his 1971 Topps football card.
Love these highlights! Does anyone know the name of the song they are playing in the game vs Bills just before the playoff game with the Raiders when John Facenda is narrating. I have been trying to find this song for years! I have the Power and Glory CD and also the Autumn Thunder, but on on either one.
The dolphins of the 60s were horrible, and in his first year coaching this putrid expansion squad, shula led them to the playoffs, and the team would make 3 straight super bowls later, and win 2 of them. Proof of his greatness. That and the fact that no coach has more wins than him

And besides, the sixties were over and it was time for a new dynasty, and why one from the newly defunct AFL.
May the good Lord rest her soul in peace

Phil Bengston was the Packers coach at the time, they would have had to fire him first

@Matt Joseph I really agree

How come there was no narration with the Raider playoff game?
That’s what I was wondering
Shula's first game as Miami coach. Both Miami and Boston had brutal seasons the year before. I wonder who was the betting favorite in that game.

Wow, 51 yrs ago. Most of these guys are gone.
Yes, I notice that too when watching these old games. Very sad.

NFL films music was by sam spence. Just look him up and maybe you will find it.
@@classicsports5057 Thanks, but there are a lot of NFL Films songs.
Pop March - Johnny Pearson is the song you're referring to. Love seeing the Raiders win here, but know we'd pay when the '73 AFC game came around.
Try Keith Mansfield also on you tube .Documentary Department , The gladiators of Miami as they battle for Greatness .

The Fins lost the first game then won 4 followed by 3 losses. (being shut out twice 28-0 and 35-0) and won their final 6 games.
The beginning of "the streak". Miami didn't lose to buffalo until 1980, after the dolphins beat the bills 20 times in a row
