Love my Bears through and through, but there’s nothing like Lombardi

Lombardi indeed made himself the GM, in addition to his head coach & executive duties. Washington's offer to make him a minority owner was the deciding factor for him to leave Green Bay & ask the Packers to be released early from his contract.

That, and he tremendously missed coaching, but thought it would be wrong to push Phil Bengtson out of the Packers’ coaching job.

@@jamesmelcher9355 Lombardi did want to coach again. But Washington’s offer of team stock was very significant. The Packers president specifically cited Lombardi’s opportunity for team ownership as the reason why GB’s board of directors released him from his contract. It is not certain that they would have allowed it, simply to coach another team. After the ‘68 season, there were other coaching vacancies with the Giants, Steelers, Eagles & Bills. All of them would have been interested in Lombardi. But only Washington made the rare offer of an ownership stake.

@@SamWesting The Giants did not have an opening for head coach until the 1969 pre season.

In his heart of hearts, he said he was tired in Green Bay. I think cancer had already taken hold.

He was dying already. He had the cancer and it was terminal. He died 18 months later.

Mr. Lombardi had been having abdominal pain for several years but ignored it until it got so bad that he was hospitalized and the colon cancer was found to have spread. Screening colonoscopies were simply not the norm in those days

@@bufnyfan1 ~~ even then they had a rudimentary tool to check for problems - and his doctor had advised him to get checked by a proctologist - Lombardi basically replied that "nobody is going to stick anything up there" - and sadly there are still people with the same attitude to this day ..

Just turning 25 last July come up, I have no knowledge of Mr. Lombardi. My grandparents are 74 they know about Him, and tell me about him. He was the best. God-bless you sir always.

Vince did it the hard way and rose up the ranks to be the greatest coach in NFL history. He never cheated. He just had his guys put on the pads, and he taught them how to win. He drove them to be champions, and sometimes they hated him, but they cried at his funeral because they all knew what he did for them. RIP Vince. You set the example for what it takes to be a champion in life and in sports.

Just watch, the media and culture will relegate this great man out and declare someone else to be the greatest coach of all time. I can hear the presentation as they award the new Super Bowl trophy named after-Belichek?😎🤑
