- A pattern I've noticed with Danny Carey is his subtlety, which is definitely NOT the first thing you notice about this song. Gonzo is a more appropriate term. But leave it to Mr. Carey to incorporate cleverness in a seemingly wild groove. Regardless, keeping this pace throughout the song was a true physical challenge. I played it several times through before I was satisfied at even getting close, and by the end I felt like I had run a marathon.
Speaking of subtleties, after recording this and then re-watching videos of Carey himself playing it, I realized that I missed a flam on the main tom groove. I'm sure I'll hear about it in the comments section. If you feel overwhelmed with rage that I missed the flams, before commenting in all-caps, try drinking a nice cold glass of water and toweling off. Trust me, it really helps :-)
Every new Tool song is an adventure.
Thanks to William Cameron for the amazing new video intro and logo!

from a holy cow
(sings holy diver in head) yeah..
Holy milk, from the Sacred Cow. (Sorry for bringing a Primus shirt to a Tool concert)

A lot of people say the, "intermission", was added as a sort of, "fuck you", to record companies who wanted to Tool to record a heavier 3 minute song for radio play. I'm now convinced that it was added solely to give Danny a break.
Lol. As a thirteen year old learning the guitar, TOOL is my most favorite band. This and Laturus and schism and Jambi are my favorite songs. Saw them in 2019 in 6th grade, it was just sensory overload lol. It was freaking amazing. My mom and dad love the band. ( Don’t judge I also like Hooker With a Penis not because I’m a 13 yr old. I’m Mormon too.)
@@slitheryboi3097 Ive seen them 15 times live. The grudge is still my favorite. Im 51 however :)
@@slitheryboi3097 I'm 17 and I've not managed to see them yet 😭 how did you manage? 😂 my absolute favorite song of theirs is the patient or swamp song, super emotional for me
Ñeither that's just tool. They're so unpredictable.
Consistently the best Tool covers on RUclips.
Khyan Thanks Khyan! I'm probably coming for a visit to the UK in November. I'd love to stop by and visit.
Excellent, please do!
Infuckingdeed!
Man. Just awesome. I absolutely love the ending of this tune from 7:20 on. One of the most inspiring things about Danny Carey is his creativity, followed by an immortal talent. However, solely based on RUclips videos, he appears by all accounts to be an awesome human human being as well. Maybe this is the best reason to learn his music. Bravo on this cover.
2nd best, Meytal does it better :)
the craziest part about this song was.that Danny Carey recorded this drum part in one take...while Adam Jones was consistently fucking with him trying to throw him off rhythm the entire time. Unbelievable when you think about it.
Anyways, sick cover!
John Later That's why they record the albums in 12 years... Adam fucks with the members to get the album delayed!!!
Where did you read this from? Did Adam say it in an interview or something?
Source?
Yeah, it is unbelievable... meaning I don't believe you.
@@namesurname7172 i also must know
As an avid rock and jazz drummer for over 20 years, spending most of those years in too complicated math rock - you are truly talented. Many posers are on youtube but to play rosetta stoned took me months and I still struggle with that hand pattern at the end with the double bass. Danny carey may be the best PERCUSSIONIST - maybe not DRUMMER alive - but my friend you should be immensely proud, especially considering you look fairly young. Danny is 59. Hes been doing this a long, long, loooooong time. I saw a pic of him where he played drums until his hands BLED. not callouses. BLOOD. It takes such supreme effort to get to this level. From one hardcore drummer to you - you've inspired me. Awesome job, man,
Yeah, I'm teaching myself this cover. Right now I have from 1:13 to 1:15 pretty much mastered. Thanks for the great cover!
I got down to nail 4:31
Man I tried that set. I just cant get the drinking and wiping down the way I need to. Do you meditate or something?
Christ. I don't know what is more impressive - his dead-on playing or the incredible tones of that kit. Either way, man, bravo. You are a master of your craft.
I fucking love his cymbals... Toms are too bright for me though, but nothing a bottom pad can't fix...
His tone is carried by dannys tone from the records, if you listen to his drum only videos his kit sounds meh especially the snare
and getting drums to sound good is no joke either, maybe the trickiest part about the whole recording/engineering process
Took me about 8 months to get this song completely down. That double killed me in the beginning. This is fucking beautiful, sir.
-pops cork on whiskey bottle-
Vids or it didn't happen
Proof!
ya’ll just want to fucking look at her lmao
I respect you, but I’d need a proof since this song is fricking difficult!
6:38-6:42
Jesus. Those drum fills that Danny Carey just throws in as if he couldn't care less. Brilliant.
Video quality 10/10
Audio quality 10/10
Drum sound 10/10
Difficulty 10/10
Accuracy 9.5/10
Final Grade A++
Still waiting for Lateralus :-)
+Bonzosbadgeholder I would die for a Lateralus cover by Johnkew!
+Bonzosbadgeholder Drink 10/10
He did Lateralus! Its awesome!
Drum sound 9/10. The snare sounds more snappy in the original.
Fuck yeah
6:01 one of the most intense tool climaxes ever! well done!!
what the fuck is wrong with the world !!! meytal cohen has 800k + subs... and this guy has some 20,000.... the fuck.... man you are making the best tool covers out there... the feels !!!!!
Why does race have to come into it? Both are really good
johnkew's subscriber count will exceed 800k the moment he decides to show his audience a little bit of cleavage. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Hold on a second, I gotta go quit drums
😂😂😂
Ha. I’ve been playing for 30 years & I feel like a beginner watching some of these
I'll take ur kit!
Remember to forget ego while enjoying I guess?
I'm learning how to keep time. I've learned my time is up.
YOU MISSE...
Just got back from drinking a cold glass of water and toweling off, holy balls dude that was freaking incredible !!!
Dude, it's really awesome to see how much you have evolved and how good you're playing Tool now, relaxed, confident, knowing what you are doing. Congrats pal!
Yuri Teixeira Mendes Thanks man, great feedback. It's funny now for me to watch older videos, how tight I was.
Hahaha I love Tool, and watch people playing Tool drums. I just saw that this video is one year old hahaha anyway, thanks for the answer, cheers
Please cover Rosetta Stoned by TOOL! :)
everyone who plays his stuff looks manic but danny himself looks chilled as
Such a difficult song to play... I've tried, lol. Amazing job man. Danny Carey is a God
Every time I watch this video I get goosebumps through the whole song. I honestly think there is no song harder to cover than this one.
this song was voted the #1 Drumming performance of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine...
@@seelenwinter6662strange coz Grudge harder and more interesting about drums in my opinion
110% amazing. Your drum playing is a true diamond in the ruff my friend!
Thanks for the feedback!
That was some REALLY impressive drumming!
I lost 5 pounds watching you play this song
I know how to play this song(I _know how,_ doesn't mean I can. Especially at full speed) and what's stopping me from being able to do the whole thing is how tiring it is. I sweat buckets after doing like a quarter of the intro.
That smile is funny n cute lol
You forgot the other 6 pounds of water weight lol
Brother, THAT was F#@K!NG AWESOME ! ! ! ! ! Danny would be proud of this cover. I really enjoyed the enthusiasm and excitement you put into this performance... Well done, John😎
You can see the poor, anguished face on every drummer doing a cover of Ticks and Leeches. Such an intense song to play. Mad props!
I feel like this is the one song we're not likely to ever hear live from them, or at least not on a nightly basis. It's gotta be the toughest one for Maynard to perform, but it's so epic. Laturalus is easily one of the greatest metal albums of all time, certainly my favorite.
You did this song justice.
3:43, hang on, ill need a drink for this part
+LimitIsIllusion Haha, drinking is definitely required...
johnkew 4:30 the drinking was for this.
LimitIsIllusion that was awesome ~ Great Name btw
Just A Tool you will probably never read this comment but i want your profile picture so bad
This video had me grinning from ear to ear the entire time. Masterfully done!!!
wish I could thumbs this up a thousand times
Make it 10,000
OH MY GOD YOU MISSED A FLAM ON THE MAIN TOM GROOVE!!!
Kidding, I just read it up above. Amazing job John, your channel is a real goldmine for any tool fan.
Keep up!
TOOL is the greatest band I have ever seen!!!! Great Job!!! The effort it takes to play that song is incredible! You definitely put in the work!!!! I like seeing the appreciation in the comments too. Glad to see the trolls are muted as it is obvious that any negative comments would be purely out of jealousy. 3 thumbs down...... RIDICULOUS!!!!! Again GREAT JOB!!!
Holy shit dude you sweating your ass off! Congrats dude, absolutely amazing job, amazing song, not easy one little bit, sounds nearly perfect, fantastic, really impressed!
John you are my favorite drummer on RUclips. Great fucking job man, as per usual. Every video you release is a treat.
Thanks man, much appreciated!
This song made me stand up and play drums after 10 years of abstinence. Man, this is way beyond normal! Thanks for the outstanding performance!
This is SICK!!!! I want to cover this too, do you have the drumless track?
Do it please, I’ve been watching your videos for years.
Dude your video has 100% gotten me through my music exam. I have been non-stop watching this video and learning how you play it for a solid year now. I played it for my solo performance exam on Friday and it was the best I have ever played it! (which is crazy because I've played it millions of times) The recording sounded amazing and there is no way on Earth I could have done it without you man. Thank you so much.
(P.S I bought new sticks to play it on the day and I now realise why it was the best I have ever played it - they're the exact sticks you used! What a coincidence, they're definitely lucky)
That’s awesome man
Goes without saying that this is fucking incredible
Thanks man!
2:30 he looks like he's trying to fly if you erase the drums and sticks from the image
this really goes well with the meth addict yelling at someone behind me
U a target to?
johnkew + Tool. The best goddamn combination ever! Your videos are the reason I regard youtube with some dignity!
Lots of respect for you man!
Sitanshu Nandan Thanks again for watching my friend.
Holy shit! I've been waiting for this for a long time. Great stuff.
"show me what you goooot!" Tool is what we got.
the hi-hat is my favorite part of the whole intro.
Tool's my favorite and this was amazing!
Awesome! I appreciate your patience during the slow-down section as well. Moments where a drummer is not supposed to play, are just as important as the moments where we do play. Excellent, high class performance!
ok with this cover i watched all of yours... damn, don't know even how to say, i'm so impressed...
as a drummer i'm gonna say something that may seems bullshit... I find tool songs harder then prog / djent / math metal songs as animals as leaders ecc.... for animals i take some hours to learn the technical difficulties , for tool is another difficulty level, is artistic difficulty, is compositive difficulty, is flow difficulty, is dynamic difficulty... your expression is perfect.... i'm done
+NOONmusic Thanks man, and good observations. I also find that the composition, flow, and dynamics in Carey's playing is what makes it an absolute joy to play (or try to play, anyway).
+johnkew you're welcome to MY channel if you wanna check :) i did the outsider by APC with all instruments.. unfortunally i'm NOT talented as you on drum >.< shame on me.. loved all your covers
+NOONmusic Same goes for Jones' guitar compositions. It takes you to whole another level to put similar kind of expression in muting chords and other techniques he incorporates in guitar sounds.
the guitar doesnt compare to animals as leaders though. nothing does
Will Bower you are right. You can't compare them.because Adam is so much better than Tosin in that area. not to take anything away from Tosin.
It a shame this hasn't reached the millions in views considering how many times I find myself back here listening to John fuck that set up. So good John, SO GOOD!
To your subscribers... "This is what we wanted! 'Cause this is what we had in mind! And this is what we're getting... I hope we choke on this." Hahaha! Anyway, got nothing but praises for you sir. You never fail to amaze me with your Tool covers.
Haha, nice!
Uhmm, can you do a cover from A Perfect Circle? The Outsider perhaps. Anyway thanks!
This might just be the best drum cover on RUclips, and I've seen a lot. So few people even attempt to claim that they have a cover of this, and rightfully so. I personally consider this song the current epitome of rock drumming, and you absolutely nailed it. It's a rare thing when you can put up something on the internet that is all but unrivaled. Well done sir.
7:50 Showing off that Sacred Geometry right there.
Absolutely unreal. Tool is one of the best bands of all time in my opinion. Outstanding job!
Your drums sound amazing
My favorite part of this whole song is the slide Adam does going from the bridge back into the intro. Gets me every time. Amazing job, by the way!
Subscribed to your channel because of this. Amazing cover, you and Danny need to meet some day and play together.
Fuck me dead I can't deal with how spot on this cover is. The break down at 6 minutes was the acid test for Ticks and Leeches, and you nailed it.
Wow, you are an incredible drummer!
I sat there brow furrowed, totally entranced. Good fucking job man, that was beautiful. I loved the top down views.
Sitting on the pier on Oahu watching this saying HOLY F**K! As always J EXCELLENT WORK!
Boda - KFH
Aloha angel. Sitting on the pier on Oahu? Uauuuu . I can imagine all the beauty of nature that is around you. I loved the pictures. Mahalo. Kisses for you
This a drummer is very good
oh my dam, he got it! its fak'n awsome, i luv it! tanx 4 shar'n...
By far the best drumming I’ve ever heard. Danny Carey is a god. Fantastic job.
i see a dude play thicks and leeches, i suscribe :)
This is the definition of beast mode!!!
new subscriber to your stuff..i cant even clap my hands in sync. .love music as im sure most do..ive watch all your stuff..beastie boys was one of my fav..your awesome and look forward to more!
Robb Schirm Thanks man, and I'm glad you liked that B-Boys video...that one was a lot of fun!
I very much enjoy watching skilled drummers and how much shear power they have just with a simple flick of the wrist. intense.
I think you should cover Reflection. That's my favorite, the drums are just so good!
Holy crap dude, I stand corrected, I thought nobody could do what Danny does. Respect.
This makes us look shredding on guitar easy.
You play with such grace you make it look easy, one of the best drummers I've seen
I think most of us are here for 6:56 haha, insane! :D
Nope, I think that the part at 6:02 is more difficult musically speaking. This segment of the song really gets you lost. Even though the part you're mentionning is absolutely amazing, if I came to this video, it was to understand the build up; and I'm not finished yet haha.
6:40 for me
Dear John, keep making everyone else look like amateurs. Lots of love. Your biggest fan.
Dude you're amazing.
This f*^king song is amazing and embodies countless feelings and emotions.
The Drums.
This song must be physically exhausting for Danny and Maynard my god
That's why they don't play it live anymore.
Maynard would blow his voice on those screams.
John: I'm a big Tool fan, and I can honestly say this is one of the most crisp and solid covers I've ever heard. This is just awesome! Thanks for the performance, dude. It was well received on this end.
Flam2k15 #neverforget ... Jokes aside... SICK!!!
This is the best drum cover I've ever seen....I think??? I'm pretty blown away rn
Please tell us how to do that fill at 6:38!!
+WillBrooksss Yeah that was so sick!
Fantastic job this is probably my favorite Tool song as far as Danny Carey's drum work goes and you nailed this brilliantly.
I still watch this at the very least monthly. You play it so perfect and then your little filter on the video just makes it more interesting.
This made me tired just watching. Gj
my jaw dropped at 6:09... never heard that part with such clarity and holy fuck
Im sweating just by looking.
Jesus
H
Christ
.... that's all i got. The playing and the kit sound.... ya, speechless
4:30 I can play this
Dude I literally just gave you a solo standing ovation... probably looked like and idiot clapping by myself and yelling... freaking awesome!
Also... When you missed those flams... I unsubbed and disliked.
Benn Down I don't blame you. Those missed flams will haunt my dreams, and I plan to self-flagellate until I pass-out from blood loss.
Benn Down lol u didn’t even notice, u just read the description
Did you drink a nice glass of water and towel off first?
Just fantastic.
well done friend,
i value
the song even more
i appreciate the gift
because i didnt burn down no circus
i was just there when the fire started
and for that i'm a marked clown
thank you very much for you posting this,Mr. Kew
Take a bow man, those last 2 minutes were something else! Beautiful.
Fuck dude. I’ve had mad respect for this song since I first heard it ages ago, and it’s so dope too see the physicality of performing it close up. Thank you.
Absolutely incredible. By far the best tool covers I've ever heard. As for missing any parts of the song, like Neil Peart has said countless times as I'm sure Danny Carey would agree, he more than likely never plays his songs the exact same way every time. The bulk of each song is played the same but a cymbal here, tom there different times is always improvised. You sir have a gift not to mention the sound of your kit, quality of your videos and your determination to do everything you cover justice. That you do time and time again. Not sure what the 13 people that gave you thumbs down were listening too.
This song is about my baby mama. Great covers, All of them!
Only Danny and maybe a few other elite technical ear people would know for sure if you got it all down right, but wow. Amazing job.
your work on the toms is unbelievable, I've been drumming for 5 years now, hopefully I can become half as good as you are! Awesome video man
Nobody can drum like Danny, caus it's Danny. But your 99 %!! Incredible work!
You are the best drummer in youtube. I like your tool covers. Looking forward to more tool covers, Reflection, Jambi ...
That ending could not have been anymore perfect
I’m 100% certain that people who play the drums at a certain level were born to play drums. As someone who’s never played drums, I find it unfathomable that you can just learn to play like this. Being able to have four separate appendages working individually yet together, combined with your brain computing it all in real time is something already in your DNA…HAS to be
hi John i am an italian drummer and a Tool's fan i have seen they in Firenze when they promote 10000 days....i love the way you play their songs....and your drum set is fantastic....congratulations
I can only assume that 40 people watched this video expecting real ticks and leaches. Otherwise I have no idea why you would dislike this - can't tell you how many times I've watched this (it's like watching a Christmas present I want)
Absolute magic, no not even magic.. complete and majestic beauty. Major props for being able to keen up with Danny’s masterpiece
Bro. You're insane.
This is harder than Rosetta Stoned in my opinion
I agree with everyone else! Very well done. And if anyone comments on the flam I bet you money they never would have noticed if you didn't mention it. Keep it up. Very entertaining as always
