I almost died in a car crash while this song was playing... The truck was struck and landed upside down right after the drum solo finished. You have really capsulated the energy from this song. Every time I hear this song I always think of that car crash and how closely it resembles everything from that car crash.. I was 15, the drunk driver was charged, I received a 5k settlement as soon as I turned 18 I am now 33. Thank you 🔧
Oh and the passenger side was caved in after my friend's F-150 was salvaged and I was wearing my seatbelt. Had I not been wearing a seat belt, I would not be typing this comment from my cell phone with a cracked screen. Talk about luck.
This guy does all the definitive Tool drum covers hands down. For so many other drummers when they cover Tool they struggle so much with the technicality of the pieces that they end up losing that power and passion that Tool simply requires. This guy plays the parts perfectly and plays them with balls. There are no other Tool drum covers on RUclips; only johnkew.
@@timematters800 Jon Hill, literally only other person to compare. Yet their styles are so vastly different, it's weird. Jon Hill is like a robot, John Kew has emotion.
I know this comment is 4 years old now, but I just want to add that I like the way this guy mixes and I love his sound as well. It's perfect for meditating on a sweet Danny Carey groove when the drumming is louder and performed well.
WillHerndon Hey Will - I actually got to see Danny work / Evil JoeB during The tracking of 10,000 Days ~ There is a click track... He most often does not use or has it on very subtly for cues etc. he adjusts the level as he wishes it's was on a fader a next to his kit. He made all his own click/cue tracks in Logic w/ various diff sounds/accents for diff parts. (Those tracks actually sounded so unique & awesome I wanted a copy of it) But in general you're correct as he most often checks against it or plays through it. Joe didn't move a single hit on that album digitally, & most songs were tracked as one complete take (no stops) Joe said he never did more then 4 takes most often 2. Bottom line an elaborate click exists he checks against it BUT most often "PLAYS through it" manipulating the tempo up/down to taste & dynamics as he tracks.
There's a girl who plays it really well too 😁 Meytal Cohen I think. I still like this one the best though. But I'm always glad to see women getting into drums and guitar so I give her props for that 🤩
Thanks for this great feedback, and I'm so stoked that this video has inspired you to work in some drumming before work! You're right - with practice, you become more efficient, the technique gets better, and muscle memory helps just guide your hands where they need to be. So without all that tension and struggling to keep up when you're first learning it, after some practice it becomes much less physically demanding.
You can totally see you are feeling those songs you play. Damn. I’m inspired and a little gutted you’ve kind of disappeared 🪄 But inspired I AM! And I have been watching and learning and feeling my way around my kit with a new kind of fascination and awe for drumming and drums as a whole. Thanks for the brilliant videos. They’ve helped me a LOT! ✨ now I’m having fun 😊
A person puts a dislike on this video because they own a drum set, they even tell people they are a drummer, but they know in their heart THEY WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO DO WHAT THEY JUST WATCHED... Jealousy at its finest
Make NO mistake. Johnkew is absolutely the real deal. Danny Carey has got to love this guy. The drum tuning is perfect. What a way to show respect to Tool, and to one of the best drummers ever - DC. Johnkew is on the top of my list now. Coming from me, I hope that means at least something........ I'm a rock bassist, but follow drummers. Weird I know. I just love good drummers. And Johnkew is one of my top favorites. I'd sure like to know where you live Johnkew.
I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've watched this cover over the past decade, but it's a LOT. And it still elates my heart every time I watch it. Granted, to me it is the quintessential Danny Carrey arrangement, but you do it so much justice, John. Well done.
Is it weird that I listen to these covers more than the actual songs?? Just always the drums catch me more than anything and this guy plays every song perfectly
Thanks for this great feedback! I learn everything by ear. I'm so slow at reading music - I don't see how those guys can read on the fly with real technical music. I have to learn everything by feeling alone - no counting.
"I never realize how intricate the song is until I sit down to learn it. To me that's the beauty of his and Tool's work: it sounds great on the first listen without really knowing what you're listening to, and then when you peel back the layers, you see how much effort went into the song." I could not have expressed better how I feel about this guy's intricacy. His themes are EVERYWHERE. Thanks for your work.
Thanks for allowing people to see what Danny Carey is doing on the drums during these songs. He uses every drum and every cymbal and actually uses every sound the drums and cymbals have to offer. Playing anything Danny does is extremely extremely hard. He uses such off time stuff you almost have to train yourself to do what he does since its so un-natural. I hope everyone else that see's this appreciates what your doing because its incredible and a pleasure to get to watch. Thank You
I've spent countless hours studying your technique and approach to these tool covers and I just want to personally thank you for the devotion and hard work you put forth.
Your effort just deflected a group of solar flares headed for Earth......you saved us all.....even the haters. Such a crisp and clear sound smashed to hell and back will earn repeat viewings for me.Thanks.
this is amazing man. i've never seen someone do this good of a job. i've been listening to this song since the early 2000s. i'm sure this was an incredible learning experience for you and you're a better player for it. thanks for your contribution.
You are easily one of the best drummers on RUclips. I appreciate the way you take Carey's composition seriously and your pure talent and chops are unbelievable. This is not an easy piece, especially after 4:45 and you absocrushed it. Much respect and keep it up!
Fantastic job man I have been trying with no luck to tune my drums to sound like Carey's. Your tuning is spot on how did you get it to sound like that? Is it effects or computerized or just straight up toms
Besides the V-drum pads, everything was recorded acoustically. The trick I found to get the toms to sound more like Carey's is to tune them higher than you think they should be. Carey particularly tunes the upper toms high (10 & 12-inch). I also tuned the resonant head slightly lower than the batter head, to create that dropping tone. Hope this helps!
Anyone brave enough to cover TOOL is amazing in my book!!! And to play like Danny Carey... Wow!!! How have you not been discovered??? Great drum set up!! Just awesome!! Many have tried, very few succeed!! Congrats!!
this is by far one of the best covers on youtube, no, one of the best videos on youtube period. Everything is nailed to perfection. You just inspired me to shed this until I can play it as good as you can!
That golden ratio note at the start totally blew my mind! Recently been looking into how it visually applies to art and then seeing it here too... amazing Carey and cheers for shedding light on it Johnkew. Came here to see how you played that rim part at the start as your the man when it comes to covering Tool!
They way he did it here is a different fill than on the album. He did tom-tom-base-base (and cycles in snare-tom-base-base) rolls; Carey does snare-tom-tom-tom-base-base rolls. So he's doing 8 for Carey's 6. It's a hard fill :)
I gotta say, I enjoy watching this as much as I enjoy watching the man himself! Your playing(and your kit) sounds fantastic! I enjoy how interested you look as you're playing. Like, the whole, "Man, this sounds so cool" look. Nothing is better than loving what you can play while you're playing it. Outstanding work, John.
88and6 she's very good, much better than i could do for one, but she dumbs it to a basic version. Also notice the mental panning of the camera on the difficult multi drum roll, she aint played that man :P
Warren Smith See, I do think she's a good drummer. But I don't like how her looks have propelled her to the top of the RUclips drumming community. She isn't as talented as this man. hahaha, I know, dude. That cracks me up everything I watch.
88and6 Agreed!I saw a facebook post of her answering questions, like does she have a bf when's her bday etc I was like WTF?This chick thinks she's a precious little prize or what? She's cute and plays the f**king drums!Big f**king deal!I unfriended her and lost interest.

Man you just put a huge smile on my face. You're awesome bro. I'm a drummer also and seeing someone perfect this song is just amazing. Thank you for uploading this great video. Simply amazing my brotha!
I used to play drums for 15 years, from the age of 9 to 24. now I'm just a bad time to time drummer but this inspires me to get back on the track. really good work there, dude!
Right, thank for taking the time to explain, I know where you're coming from. I listened to it again after reading your comment and it makes more sense now. Like I said, you nailed it and it's a little douchey of me to bring that up, considering the excellent job you did. Actually, after I watched that one I enjoyed some of your other cover. Really good.

Check out delta empire
Dude you have to check out Jon Hill Jambi drum cover.. i think you may change your original opinion on the 'only' part
TimeMatters when he mean "only" theres noone have balls beside john, who do cover alot of tool song and totally play it with the right technique.

Whenever I play my Tool songs in my car and I've arrived at my destination, I make everyone in the car stay in the car until the Tool song is over.
How can anyone leave the car before Tool songs end? Those who leave should be given a beat on the arse in fibonachi sequence
I feel like i wrote your comment
It's just what i'm to
Lol I literally do this same thing with my wife sometimes
@The Crimson Drummer
i'm glad someone eventually said it
Tools the lots of ya are. Sharpest ya ain’t. Take th thy comment with no insulteth. Tis jus a joke.
I think the atomic clock checks in with Danny Carey to make sure it is accurate.
2am
Sophia Mefford so gene hoglan checks in with Danny?

Anyone: "So and so, so and so, this and that."
Internet: "Ackkktuuualllyyy....."
Every got damn time.
I have always always skipped over videos of drum covers of everything. Until today I never thought that was a mistake... My God man.
People like this deserve a seat on Mount Olympus
+SergeantZaf03 RIGHT ON...
Danny Carey is the one who performs it and writes it soooo....
+GlitchySheepGaming And youre implying...? Danny is king but whomever is able to preform this still deserves the attention.
Oh definitely! Sorry I sounded like a dick. Yeah its amazing what she has done
+GlitchySheepGaming Implying Danny isn't already a god.
I am not a musician and after watching many do Tool drum covers I have developed an awareness for who is the real deal. This guy is it - period Jon
Definitely lol couldn't fake your way through this one 😆
There's a girl who plays it really well too 😁 Meytal Cohen I think. I still like this one the best though. But I'm always glad to see women getting into drums and guitar so I give her props for that 🤩
It's practically better than sex - pulling off a song with so much energy. Nothing feels better. Great job.
:D :D
I can agree to this
This is the best Tool drum cover on RUclips.
totally agree
Chris Campbell check out Amanda Dal she does a good job as well. I like hers a bit more just because she is obviously enjoying it
he did Lateralus, your argument is invalid
he did Rosetta Stoned...
Chris Campbell I concur
5:07 did you just hit like 3 cymbals in a milisecond?
Holy shit
Yeah he speeds the camera up lol
Yep pretty much looked like he did
YES, how its supposed to be, only on his cover that i saw that

Don't even know how such a excellent cover could even get a dislike
Dislikes are jealousy
The dislike poster was probably offended that the song flew in the face of what Jesus had told him was acceptable......
A person puts a dislike on this video because they own a drum set, they even tell people they are a drummer, but they know in their heart THEY WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO DO WHAT THEY JUST WATCHED... Jealousy at its finest

I have that thought all the time HAHAHAHAHA
That is great to hear my friend, thanks for posting on my video!
Let's face it, we are here to see 4:35. BTW, you nailed it!
Wow you nailed it. The into to the solo is one of the best drum sections for the time. Danny innovated and inspired so many.
What kind of snare is that, sounds so good

there’s plenty of variations of the fill that sound the same and are really easy if you know what you’re doing behind a kit

great cover! great production! how did you get the panning shot?
iamossum Thanks! It's an auto-panning motorized tripod mount that I found at a home security store.
Can't get enough watching this! You were scorching on this! FN Awesome!
bad ass dude...out of all the Carey wannabes...you are the best...That metyal what's her bucket drives me nuts and is very full of herself
I was just thinking how stupid it is she has close to 1 million views on her dumb ass mountain-themed cover. She drives me insane, as well.
88and6 she's very good, much better than i could do for one, but she dumbs it to a basic version. Also notice the mental panning of the camera on the difficult multi drum roll, she aint played that man :P

It's obvious you are enjoying while playing this. That joy is infectious, because humans have empathy. So I enjoyed watching this. Thanks.
Wow.. u sir have gain a new sub!!
One of the few people online who nail drum tracks. The song is good because they wrote it that way!! Thank you for staying true to the artist's music. Awesome, keep it up!
On Fucking Point!
Best covers I've seen yet. Crisp. Perfectly executed.
Dude
Each Carey's drum creation is a marathon. You can be considered a high performance athlete for covering this.

Only drummer on RUclips that has nailed this song. Great to watch! Carry on, good sir.
Sick, just absolutely sick. You know, drummers sometimes get a bad rap, cuz they're not "musicians" (don't do chord theory etc.), but when you watch a song like this be performed on the drums, it becomes all to clear how incredibly challenging and creative an instrument the drums can be. I'm floored....thank you for posting, and for all your hard work putting together videos so the rest of can enjoy them and learn from them, John. WOW!
So good to see what Danny Carey has created being played so tight. Incredible drumming.
Your explanation of the sequence clears a lot up for me. I always thought Danny was a little off. You covered this amazingly. Great job. I think I have listened to yours a dozen times or so.
Watching you play Tool's music makes me appreciate the complexity of the arrangements that much more. Thank you.
BRAVO!!! Wow! What a gift! You are a born Master if dem Drums!!🎶💃🎼🎈🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Wow - really great job man. These are the kind of intricate syncopated songs that I'd love to be able to play. You done a remarkable job of mapping out the intricacies and nuances of the performance, and deliver it perfectly. Well done!
best drum cover of this song by miles, well done.Take a bow. RESPECT
that breakdown in the middle of the song is one of my favorite Danny Carey/Tool moments, such an awesome drum part... and Johnkew nailed it, as usual
Well done sir! The solo section was so clear! I could really feel the rhythmic definition of every idea.
I liked your rambling actually! You nicely described the feeling this song provides, even for me when I play it on guitar. And we, at least I, kinda clearly see how much you enjoy playing it!! Nice job man! Thanks!
Absolute best freaking cover of this song I've EVER seen.. second only to the O'Keefe kids.. that was something to behold
Absolutely OUTSTANDING John.
This is one of those rare moments when music becomes a masterpiece. Beautiful work.
Thanks for posting this! Best Tool drum covers I've seen by far! I watch your videos to help me learn how to play them.
Just needed a refresher on how bad ass their old stuff still is...thank you sir!
Best cover of 46 and 2 I have ever seen ! Well done Master Jedi !!
There are quite a few 46 & 2 covers on YT, but this is the best one. You are the man!
amazing. It's good to see someone not afraid to hit the drums. Kit sounds beautiful too.
You rock Johnkew. Your drumming is kick ass. Love watching you do drum covers on Tool songs. Awesome.
I've been hooked on this song lately...and you killed it. Thanks for recording this!
this is one of the most perfect drum covers I have ever watched. thank you for this experience.
Still watching this in 2021 and it still blows my mind watching you play. Every. single. time.
Best cover of this song I have seen.
Dude you the Dynamics and skill is REEEAAAL!
I love the way you do this, the videos are epic and i love the idea of searching for live videos. All the work you put in this is awesome, we can see it through the quality of your videos and i fucking love it!
easily the best forty six & 2 cover on youtube.
great drumming dude
Brilliant! Simply brilliant. Best drum cover of this I've seen.
By far, best drum covers on youtube.
Absolutely incredible cover - I bow to your skills.
I love the sound of your toms. Great playing.
As I've listened to this song more I've really come to appreciate just how incredibly difficult some of the parts are. Fantastic cover.
