    I owned a Staples Dexley chair for about a year, I was relatively happy with it, but my wife needed a chair to work from home. I went and found a used aeron on facebook marketplace for $350, and the difference is night and day in the quality of the chair, and how comfortable I am after hours of sitting in it. Used quality chair is the way to go over any big box office store's offerings.

    • @SpencerStanley
      @SpencerStanley  2 года назад +1

      Used aerons are always a great idea for the right price! I’ve had a lot of people say the quality difference is huge but in terms of comfort they’re extremely similar. I’m actually working on a 1 year review right now.

      @@SpencerStanley No they're not lol, the Aeron is far more comfortable than any budget Staples chair. The mesh on these cheap Chinese chairs doesn't compare to the 8Z pellicle mesh on the Aeron.

    • @Viewer13128
      @Viewer13128 2 года назад

      @@StardustLegacyFighter true the mesh is much cheaper, but it's not the mesh that's decreasing feeling of comfort, it's the fact that Hyken only has 1 size for specific body types without adjustments to match other body types. Japanese RUclipsr TechLead owns both Aeron and Hyken and he says he would keep both, but the Hyken is more comfortable to him. I've tried other Herman Miller chairs and they were nothing special at all. I thought Herman Miller was the best and if it was meh, then mesh must be meh in comfort and I would need to buy those luxury cushiony chairs. Well, I sat on the Hyken and then I found out mesh was all I needed. So even though the mesh is cheap on the Hyken, mesh material barely affects comfort at all. it's just body type synergy. That's why some ppl find the Hyken more comfortable than Herman Miller chairs even though Hyken uses cheap materials.
      So, with my view on money management and value, Hyken is better cause it's more comfy and cheaper. I can patiently sit on the Hyken and wait as long as necessary for a Steelcase Gesture (or another new release) to buy for cheap (I'm actually worried if I'd end up preferring the Hyken more).
      Regarding Dexley, according to an ex-employee at Staples, it's not as good as the Hyken and is only there for bigger people who isn't comfortable on the Hyken. Again, these cheap chairs just have synergy/adjustment issues which can ruin comfort. You need a specific body type for these cheap chairs, but those who fit well in them can prefer them to $1.5k chairs.

    • @StardustLegacyFighter
      @StardustLegacyFighter Год назад +3

      @@Viewer13128 First of all, Techlead isn't someone I consider a chair expert at all, he's just an arrogant guy who likes the sound of his own voice more than anything. BTOD are a much better source of genuine reviews and expert advice on RUclips, when it comes to office furniture.
      Secondly, chair comfort is extremely subjective, so I'm not surprised that you may find Aeron's mesh less comfortable than the one used on the Hyken. Herman Miller sell 3 different mesh chairs, none of the mesh used is the same and some ppl prefer one design over another.
      Yes, body types can affect how comfortable you find a certain chair, and once again this is something high end office chairs excel in, since they have a far better idea of ergonomic design.
      I know how you like to make it seem that these high end office chairs are overpriced, but you're completely missing the key points. Cheap chairs don't last long and will need to be replaced regularly, especially if you intend to sit in them for long sessions every day.
      There is a huge second hand market for high end office chairs, so there's no need to buy a brand new one, especially if you don't have a large budget.
      I personally will never buy a product made in China, no matter the price, as it's against my morals and principles.

    I spent an hour in Staples going back and forth between the Hyken and the Dexley chairs. Went home and checked Craigslist only to find there was a local wholesaler letting some brand new extra Hykens from a bulk order go for $100 each. That settled it. I think if I paid the $159 to get one from Staples it would have still been totally worth it. It is very comfortable and under $200 is nothing when it comes to your back and neck. Great review - I own this chair. Important correction: the width of the arm rest can be adjusted during assembly with about 1 inch of adjustment on either arm (two inches total). This can be changed by loosening the bolts, moving the arms, and re-tightening. Not ideal for an office with mutliple users, but just fine for home use. Also, the seat depth can be adjusted through a similar mechanism by moving the back of the chair to the desired position on assembly with about 1.5 inches of adjustment.

That or the Steelcase which I sat in for a few years before Covid and it didn't do much for me but my back is hosed and it didn't offer enough lumbar support. Had the hykken for 6 years, got it at $130 at the time so I am FULLY qualified to speak on this. The reason for replacement was the cylinder finally went bad (I only weigh 155 pounds for reference) and the lumbar support was completely blown out several years ago. First of all, for the price it's a good chair especially if you want all mesh. The durability on the components are questionable. The arm rests were torn up pretty good but still functional and not terrible looking. The mesh held up very well but it's a bit rubbery and not enjoyable to sit in with bare skin like if you sit shirtless at your PC in hot weather.
    I sat in a few Aeron Remastered and Classic, and tried the Atlas headrest today. First of all, this chair is VERY expensive (I'd suggest going used for around $450). Secondly, this chair is superior to the Hyken in every way and by a large margin. The mesh is MUCH higher quality and feels better to the touch. The arm rests feel very plush and usably moveable. The Atlas head rest is -PERFECT- both in looks and performance. I would have no problem putting that on my chair if I had one.

    I bought one of these last year in May, so it's almost a year and this chair was great while it lasted. But an issue that was not mentioned here that I did see in a video before buying this chair was the mesh back becoming loose over time. Reviews showed the mesh would be good for 2 to 3 years and then since the chair is cheap, you'd just buy another one and you'd have your money's worth there. But it's not even a year yet and the mesh on my chair is so loose that the lumbar support digs in my lower back and I started question why. Well literally today is when I gave my chair a good look and yup you could see waves in the mesh. So if I have to keep buying these things every year, total is probably going to beore than an aeron. lol I own this chair, and I came across your video because I'm hunting for something different. I absolutely HATE IT. It cuts off the circulation in my legs due to the hard plastic edges; it nabs my hair in the stupid headrest that can't be locked into place; it collects dust like crazy under the seat (seriously, bet you never noticed, but if you tip the sucker sideways, it's NASTY). It also ruined my L-shaped desk due to the hard components of the armrest scraping the wood. So over this chair!

    • @SpencerStanley
      @SpencerStanley  2 года назад

      I’ve never had any of those issues other than the dust, it sure gets dusty. I’m sure any other chair would accumulate the same amount of dust it’s just more visible due to the design. I know a lot of larger people have complained that the chair is too small and I know they make a larger version which may fix the loss of circulation. The only real issue I’ve had since this review is the cushion at the front comes out of place. Please let me know what options you find!

You see used 20yo Aeron on the market with the mesh still standing strong, and you would never see a 5yo hyken on the market. All the expensive chairs use American Matrex mesh and its durabily cannot be compared to cheap look-alikes.

  • @yl5694

    Not the best decision. The Hyken will last 1-2 years before giving out on you while the Aeron will last 20 years. You can find 10 year old Aerons on Craigslist that have been absolutely abused in a busy office that are still in decent condition. I guarantee you there is no Hyken that has lasted 10 years.
    How do I know? I’m a cheap bastard and I’ve gone through 4 Hyken chairs so far. They’ll last about a year or less if you sit in it for 4-6 hours every single day. The thing about the Hyken is that it gets more uncomfortable as time goes on. The mesh will start to fray and poke into your thigh. The foam strip under the front of the seat will rip and dislodge itself. The mesh will start to sag from the frame. These same problems have occurred with every single Hyken I’ve had.
    So while it may last 1-2 years, the last half of its life will be miserable for you as you try to ignore these problems. If you’re an extremely light user that only sits on the chair for 1-2 hours 3-4 times a week, it may very well last you 5 years. But there’s no way that it will last more than a year with 8 hour daily usage. It’s too poorly constructed, the mesh is cheap and the foam strip is glued in place.
    Financially, if you don’t have the money for an aeron, it makes sense. It’s comfortable before the issues start to creep up, and it’s affordable. But if you can afford a used Aeron for $600, it’s just a better financial decision.

      @@SpencerStanley Agreed, I didn't start with the Aeron, I worked my way up after breaking increasingly expensive chairs over the years. That being said, mid range chairs are mostly trash with all the same weak points of budget chairs, often more as they try to add a bunch of pointless features and adjustments to justify the price.
      So unfortunately if your ass is simply too mighty for a hyken, realistically your only other option is the super premium end of the market. I agree anyone who can get away with a Hyken, absolutely should.
