Crazy how he was screaming for help in this song and he lost. Such a sad loss of life.
Pretty much all the grunge singers forecast their death in their lyrics.
I don't think he was screaming here, I think he knew he had already lost the battle by this point and I think he knew it was just a matter of time!
He was already a ghost.
@Galaxus35 that's deep
You have to want help
Pausing that video to tell the love of your life how much she means to you is something all of us need to do more often.
True story. No apologies needed at all.
Priceless reaction. To this day, people that have heard this song thousands of times.. still cry.
Every single time, just as much as the first time I watched it when it originally aired on MTV.
@@jasonlaviolette2964 no doubt thats why I avoid it usually....knowing what happened while hearing these words....always has the same effect on me....crying for the past gets us nowhere....(as I wipe my eyes clear)
It's me, I'm people
@@jasonlaviolette2964 🙌 this sings hits many people with that struggle. Beautiful emotional reaction, new subscriber!
Anybody having a bad day, know you matter and are beautiful ❤️
One of those people, checking in.
You don’t listen to Alice & Chains, you feel it. Even more so when you see Layne live, like this, so much emotion and pain. If you watch this and don’t have a true emotional reaction them I’m sorry but you are cold. RIP Layne, the best voice ever!
The closest thing to singing at your own funeral.
There will never be another Layne Stayley. His voice was like no other. The power. The pain. You felt it all.
This Unplugged sessions was a masters class in performance. "Frogs" will go down as my favorite track during this session. It resonated with me as a teen during this era, and 30 years later, it still does.
All 4 members of that band made some of the greatest music of the '90s. I'm glad I got to be a teen during that time. But because of that, we've lost some of our heroes.
April 5th is a painful day in rock. We lost Kurt in '94, and just 8 years later, we lost Layne. Two beautiful souls, who were gone too soon.
I was on my way out on a rare night off when I saw this come on MTV. After this song was over I just cancelled all my plans and watched the whole session. I'm so glad I did. It's a once in a lifetime experience.
@@DuckdaringZthat’s a cool experience and story bro
I'm crying. I always cry during this song. No one to cry to...no place to call home.
Layne was battling deep and hard with his addiction at this point of recording. The guitar player Jerry Cantrell looked over at Layne after the first verse, and I remember him saying in an interview years later that he was so pleased to hear Layne sing it so well, as they weren't even sure Layne could sing at all because of the drugs. Like, in a moment he was grateful the world would get to hear him at this amazing point even with so much going wrong around them. There are a few Musical Artists' deaths that shook my world (I am a musician as well) and Layne's was right at the top along with Kurt Cobain, Scott Weiland, Dimebag Darrell, Chester Bennington, and Chris Cornell. (tons of others as well but MY main ones) Very good reaction, love that this was my introduction to your channel! Your message to your Love and sharing that gratefulness is powerful! I wish you both all the best.
All at top of my list also!
@@nicholasdashkiwsky6640 it's truly sad. My best friend since middle school on taught me so many things on the drums, and I did the same for him. We were inseparable, he spent summers with me & my family, was like another son to my Dad & grandkid of my Grandparents. He was taken far too young at 25 years old.. His passing was the hardest of em all. He saved me from "self deletion" when we were 12. He found me hanging, cut me down and gave me CPR and brought me back. I have wanted to give up so many times as I am battling serious life threatening health issues.. but I fight because he didn't get the chance to fight. I have him tatted on my arm so he is always with me! People come and go, but the ones who leave such an impression such as that will NEVER be forgotten!
Such a great song, AIC such a talented band
Iconic. Layne is a shell of himself at this point, but it goes to show you - when a person allows their soul to express itself, something magical happens. Although quite sad and haunting, his angelic voice delivers one of most beautiful, pull at you heart-strings, performances I’ve ever witnessed. This entire unplugged set is an emotional ride of a band of brothers acknowledging choices made and the pain they will all soon face - there is an ‘air of helplessness & mourning’ that weaves through this. Agonizing, almost brings you to your knees.
I am a 30+ year card carrying member of the Grunge Era. I was 16 when they hit the scene back in the early 90s when hair metal was fading out. You had Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Soul Asylum. Unfortunately Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam is the only frontman still alive. Layne Staley was a once in a lifetime talent. He was deep in the throes of his addiction at this time. He would later die of an overdose. But you watch him here and he makes it look so effortless. I still listen to this music today all these years later. This was the soundtrack to my high school years.
Blind Melon!!
His voice and Jerry's were amazing together. The Unplugged version of these songs is now my favorite by far.
@@SheldonGoff absolutely!
Don’t forget about Smashing Pumpkins and Jane’s Addiction. Such a great time. I’m 49 and I think I’m super lucky to live through the best musical times 80’s hair metal and grunge are my 2 fav genres of music by far
Long sleeves, gloves on his hands tells you where he was at in this stage in his life and this performance!!
This song just gets better and better - thousands of times I’ve listened to this rendition and every time I’m tearing up and wishing I were twenty again, living large, loving the grunge scene, feeling young, and knowing Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez, and Sean Kinney were alive and killing great music. Best song and best live song EVER.
Finally.. someone actually said it.. "PLEASE DON'T PAUSE!!!"
Agreed it is such a somber beautiful song and pausing it is just ruining it
They usually have to due to “fair use” rules on YT
In high school when they came out. Was a rough time and their albums hit me hard😬If I had a dollar for every tear I shed listening to them I’d be retired by now. Nothing like AIC😳🥰🖤
I'm so happy that people discovering this music in 2024 feel the emotion. There's surely a generation of people like me who as teenagers watched this when it was first on TV, who will always cry when they hear Layne Staley sing...his voice was so powerful and beautiful but the last decade of his life was a nightmare and you can hear his pain.
To me...The most powerful moment of this entire performance is when the crowd reacts to Layne walking out onto the stage.
My favorite band of the 90’s
Facts! 🥹💕🎶💯
Alice in Chains "Would" and "Down in a Hole"
i got to meet layne... one of a kind. kindest person i ever met. listened to me play drums. told me i would go somewhere with my talent. he was so right... he is so missed...
True music is the language everybody feels and understands 🎶
That was a beautiful reaction. I'm so happy for both of you and wish you all the love in the world.
Great reaction, I'm happy you paused (as required) and shared impact of song. I'm sure multiple individuals have felt same. Y'all will also enjoy listening to talent of Chester Bennington, Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, Queen & even Hank Williams Sr
I see someone posted that Layne was “screaming for help” with this song. I disagree. This was Layne telling everyone he didn’t want the help. Anyone who knows the history, knows he had everyone wanting to. But these lyrics and his performance says he wants to be left alone to be himself and if he can’t do that, he doesn’t want to be here. He accepted what he perceived was his fate. Song is the heaviest ever written and performed.
Actually one of the saddest stories in music. Such a sweet soul destroyed by his demons. I know those demons
He was in his heroine addiction during this it ended up taking him a few years later
Omg I've been back on an Alice in Chains tip for a minute & it's great to see other people enjoy them. Idk your guys' age but they were massive when I was growing up & my parents listened to them when I was in elementary school so they helped shape my taste in music. Little me didn't truly understand what the songs meant but as I got older, I lived them. I ended up addicted to opiates, just like Layne but somehow I made it out & have been clean for almost all of my 30s.
Don't apologize for pausing and pouring out your heart. We can all tell how genuine you too are and it's such a beautiful thing! Keep doing what feels right and follow your heart! Cheers!
Damn, came for the reaction but I’m the reacting! What a beautiful thing to say to your love. Very touching and sweet. Thank you for that
Love it how a song I’ve listened to for 20 plus years can bring you to tears and make you realise how much you love your partner. Music is life
When Layne hits that 1st falsetto, it hits me in the feels.
You two are awesome and so genuine. Great reaction and I look forward to more.
I was 16 when this song and album came out. I listened over and over. I love watching you experience this music.
I've been a AIC fan for as long as I can remember. I saw this performance when it first aired and to this day I cry when I watch any part of it. He was such a beautiful soul and although this is an amazing performance it hits me right in the heart. He was a shell of himself at this point. He was fighting a battle he knew he wasn't going to win. If you watch Live at the Moore 1991 at his peak it's heartbreaking. Alice in Chains will ALWAYS have a spot in my music collection.
Down in a hole from the same gig is great too
Check out "God Am" from their "Live" album.
I always get goosebumps. Seriously, it's amazing.
I've literally listened to this song everyday since I bought the CD in 1996. And it hits EVERY time.
It takes a strong man to show emotion other than anger, I’m working on it but we lose too many to suicide and drugs because it’s difficult. I feel like you’re healthy and have a strong support system, congrats to you both!
Beatiful reaction. Miss you Lane
You guys should hear them do "love, hate, love" live his vocals will blow your mind
That makes voice will forever hold a special place in my heart, such blunt honesty. Thank you for your take on this, and you two are adorable❤😊
Yall all beautiful man. ❤️
The most intelligent comments I heard about music from a long time. Exactly what I feel. Thank you!
I cry every time I hear this song! This is me, every day!
Crazy because i just listened to this about a month ago and I’ve heard it all growing up but it really hits home now as an adult. The algorithm really knows what to suggest. Its funny how our phones know us more then we know our selves anymore. “Weeee chase misprinted lies” hmmm seems like he was trying to tell us something back then.
I was a big fan as a kid..but 7th grade me really had no idea what these songs were about. Hearing it adult is so haunting. I went down a recent aic rabbit hole bc of how good laynes voice is...something I also didn't realize when young.
This is one of my favorite albums….
👊🏼💯💙😎
I remember the night this aired. We lost him not long after. This was life changing when I watched it at 16.
This was amazing....as always....Layne is missed, greatly....such a voice....
That's how you know the real ones... When you make folks feel what you feel inside.
People need to hear this music before it is buried
AIC will never be buried
You two are great, I loved the reaction and the feedback. I also loved watching the connection you have with each other.
RIP Layne Staley, one of the best singers in all of rock. AIC has the best mtv un-plugged by far.
Brother don't apologize you are brave for being honest. I love you for that
I remember watching this premier on MTV. Such an amazing show.
One of my favorite songs from one of my all-time favorite bands. I was heartbroken when he died. Amazing that he performed like this given how drugged out he was during this recording.
You two are incredible!! Great reaction!
God bless you guys, my favourite song imbued with even more meaning about your love
You both are wonderful!!
best mtv unplugged and no other one comes close.
Lane was singing about all of his pain, his struggles in a Nutshell.
This was my best friends growing up favorite song/band. Sadly he took his own life about 10 years ago. He was like another brother to me.
I loved this video. Thank you
He was 34, he had been for two weeks when they found him. He was 6’0” tall, and weighed 86 pounds. He was found sitting upright, he had morphine, codeine, cocaine, and heroin in his system. He was also found holding a fully loaded syringe of heroin in his hand. R.I.P.
Alice in chains Forevr
all of these years later and its still difficult to watch this performance. Layne was so sick with his addiction at this point. it's so sad that it got the better of him in such a sad way. R.I.P.
I have a suggestion for you to react too. Group name is XG, and the song is "Woke Up" I think you two would really enjoy it.
I almost feel like the lyrics to this song are talking about the addiction that he was dealing with, but he didn’t want to tell the world because we do know how he passed away one of the most best singers in the world lane he can really draw your story through his music
Please consider reacting to 'Down in a Hole' from the same concert, it's exquisite
this song has been said to be the closest one can come to singing at their own funeral.
Amigo, jamás se pausa cuando empieza un tema y menos un tema como este.
Great video y'all, new subscribers here. 💗
You're both beautiful. Arohanui from New Zealand.
RIP Layne❤
Layne was saying goodbye.
"If I can't be me my own, I'd feel better dead" my whole life I've wanted to be me yet felt it was never good enough. That's basically what he is saying and what I've felt too. It leaves you dead inside. As if death is imminent and it doesn't matter when.
I told my mental health Doctor to listen to this song ...
And you'll understand my thoughts & feelings.
Sadly she didn't.
Sad to be happy ❤️
perfect bass sound.
so sad....😢
♥️♥️♥️
Down in a Hole is another one that will crush you
❤

AIC ..love them but takes me to dark places ..
Such talent wasted because of drugs
She voice sound kinda cat’ish 😂
Sorry but i don’t get the whole “tortured artist” thing. They make it big, make big $ and off themselves. I started drumming at 8, was in bands all thru my teens and early 20’s. Never got a record deal, wound up painting cars for a living. Never thought about checking out. Shit, every day i wake up still breathing is a good day, even being now disabled. If air fills my lungs i’m smiling. These dudes make millions, have it all and check out. Sorry i don’t get it
I can't understand anything big bro sez
