    OneNote is free, cross platform, and it has good integration with other office apps/files. What I love with GoodNotes is the PDF annotations and you could have multiple windows opened on iPad. I might not agree with your point system on the pros but this is a good comparison…

    onenote actually has a lot of page color options when you use it on a windows 10 tablet. I currently use a grey page color with light blue lines. As far as page sizes go, you can choose the page size if you go to print options and then save it as a pdf which you can then send to other people

  • @tommyboyindy1157
    @tommyboyindy1157 4 года назад +96

    Great comparison. I would disagree with you though on file management. The Onenote layout allows you to transition from note to note almost instantaneously and with sub pages it allows for organization 4 layers deep. That’s plenty for me. I find that having to drill down through folder after folder to get to a different note to be a pain. For someone who is constantly switching from note to note I much prefer Onenote.

    I’m not done watching the video, but as a owner of both, I’ve found that goodnotes’s ability to have tabs within the app that let you access 2 or more documents at once a must. You can have tabs or you can do split screen. Amazing when annotating a page of a textbook while taking notes on it.

    THANK YOU! I recently bought an Ipad for my online classes and couldn't decide which app to download. I didn't want to spend money on goodnotes just because. You helped me SO much to find the best fit for me.
    I think I will buy goodnotes, because I need to use the app as both a note taking app AND a pdf reader. Since I already bought the Ipad new, it's not so bad to have to spend 8 extra dollars for a great app and goodnotes seems so much more approachable and workable. Besides, I won't be taking typed notes, so that part isn't that bad. Again _thank you so much_.

    I use both One NOte and Good Notes. As well as Notability. Each have some features that the others don’t and make it worth it to keep stuff in 3 apps, although sometimes I forget which subject is where. Onenote is excellent because it sincs to my deskpo Mac so when I am at home I can write and edit previous notes ion a proper keyboard and use the iPad fot to visualize other documents while I am woring on my notes. Goodnotes is excellent as a pdf annotator and to add pages and notes to the pdfs. Notability is great when I am taking notes and recording a lecture. And as far as being organised goes, Onenote’s system is the easiest and to use, I reckon.
    Ropsie, thank you sooo much for your excellent videos. Keep it up, please! May the universe reward you with a brilliant career and life for all this. :)

    Hi again, with reference to 18:22 of the video. You can open files as pdf printouts on OneNote, which then makes them printouts. The point of being able to add them as a thumbnail to the file is to make an interactive notebook where you could access other files or documents from the page. However if you want to have it as something to anotate, you just open it as a pdf printout.
    :)

    I'm using OneNote cause I use multiple PCs, Android phone & iPad Mini and so far I'm loving the convenience for my work as an engineer! So far below are the points of using OneNote that annoys me:
    1. Latest version of OneNote do note have the function to export as docs/PDF/notebook so I have to use the OneNote 2016 on Windows PC to use this function. The nature of OneNote of continuous pages makes it difficult to have notes that separate at the right pages without being cut partially without trial and error OR copy and paste manually on word (for handwritten notes will be paste as image so I need to disable darkmode)
    2. The export feature is a way for me to share a specific notebook/section/page with colleagues or for physical print, the latest OneNote app only allows for sharing via link which is only for the entire notebook. To get around this without using OneNote 2016 is to create a separate notebook and copy what I want to share before sharing the link.
    3. Unlike MS word, tab or indentation doesn't work OneNote so its a pain to not have 2 images align in a horizontal row in the same text box or table.
    4. If only PDF books can be imported and view like a PDF reader instead of making every page as an image (my god the loading process takes forever!)
    Despite that, OneNote is my best friend in keeping my work notes organised and seamless across different platforms!

    • @taisbarbaris
      @taisbarbaris 4 года назад +4

      You can easily export nice PDFs from mobile version, just tap Export - Send copy - Send with another app - Save to wherever you like. While the desktop version creates these monstrous PDFs with lots of empty pages, the mobile version does a great job and gives you nice compact PDFs with all your info.

  • @ericdavis100
    @ericdavis100 4 года назад +2

    At 8:14 - regarding OneNote tables - use the tab to make the next cell to the right (so text1 tab text2 tab text3 - this would make a three column table). So MS has already made an easy way to add columns (and new rows are just a return).

    Amazing voice. Thanks for the video. I use OneNote mainly for organizing my website projects. I'll have sections for templates, page design, checklists etc., no note taking with OneNote. Good Notes I use it for note writing and PDF annotation. I wanted to use OneNote for notes as well so I can have everything in one app, that's how I found this video.. I hate on OneNote that I can't edit the documents I import, at least on a Mac. A workaround is to import from Onedrive and when clicking the link in Onenote the document opens up in the corresponding program (word, excel, etc), and when saving it saves back to Onedrive..

    Good comparison but I question the rating method. PDF handling gets the same scoring weight as in-app password. I think OneNote is more of a text-based note-taking app with handwriting features while Good Note is a handwriting app with text features. In that sense the two apps are apples and oranges.

    • @PaperlessX
      @PaperlessX  4 года назад

      I totally agree with you! They are apples and oranges 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
      As for the rating... the ratings have no weight... it’s just a matter of points when the feature is available. If both had good PDF annotation capabilities... I would have given more points for PDF annotation by analysing the available features in each app which would give the weight in point that you’re talking about... I hope that makes sense

    Great comparison. Funny how my personal killer feature in favor of OneNote is actually the way it handles PDFs.
    True, they are not browsable in an agile way... but as they are an object on the canvas (instead of occupying the whole page) I am able to write notes on them and AROUND them.
    I can study much better.
    Highlighting a word or sentence on the PDF is fine... but then with OneNote I can draw an arrow pointing to another page, or pointing BESIDE the page where I scribble some comment, paste some image, etc.
    This feature, with the infinite canvas, are the reasons why I prefer to use OneNote instead of the (arguably much prettier) other iPad note softwares.

    • @PaperlessX
      @PaperlessX  4 года назад

      The Android version of OneNote was torture to use with those, but the iPad and Desktop ones allow for much easier rearrangement of the PDF pages, if needed.
      Still manual :P
      But usable.
      And a very desirable feature for me.

    Great video. For me GoodNotes 5 is a winner because of the handwriting search. OneNote just won't make my handwriting searchable but GoodNotes seems better at recognising my handwriting than I am. It really is amazing. The fixed paper size is a bit of a pain in GoodNotes 5 though and I wish there was an infinite canvas option like OneNote. I've already had to create extra "clipboard" pages to move notes into to rearrange a page and add space.

    • @PaperlessX

    • @adamdavidsonuk
      @adamdavidsonuk 3 года назад

      @@PaperlessX it's more a vertical infinite canvas that I find useful. The horizontal part is annoying. In the end I switched to OneNote again as I'm making a game development journal and adding in screenshots from the Windows version and it's just easier to copy/paste them straight in than save them to a file and then add them on the iPad. Being able to insert space for an image in between handwritten text and have that text flow to the next page is also nice in OneNote. GoodNotes feels more like a series of power point slides where you don't flow things from one page to the other. I liked the performance of GoodNotes and for OneNote I have a new page for every day to get around the performance issues.

    Hi, Nice video. I work on a lot of PDFs for plans and quotes that I get from engineers or construction contractors. I have to find a lot of symbol and calculate their quantity. Example: On a plan, I have to find this kind of symbol ($), I also have to highlight a lot of important information in the specifications. I am looking for an application that could compile all this information for me and I would classify it afterwards. What do you suggest to me?

      You will need to use the shapes tool and tap on the straight line every time you want to highlight with the pen tool. And you can’t choose a default highlighter for text. You have to choose one every single time

Is it possible to move my notes from OneNote to good notes 5 automatically , without having to rewrite all of them...I hope there’s some kind of option for that, because it would take forever if I have to move them by myself. I prefer to continue using OneNote if there’s no such an option...😄

    You forgot many features of Onenote.... For example the ruler with the degree measure wich doesnt exist in goodnotes.... And yyou can convert your Handwriting in OneNote to text aswell... Even better than in goodnotes.... Ive tested both apps and my handwriting wasnt recognized from goodnotes.... And the Math function is really important! You can convert your Handwritten equations into computer written math and onenote even can Solve the equation for you! Im in a german gymnasium in a 9nth class in bavaria and in my math, physics and sometimes even in chemics subjects its really usefull to have this.
    And another point: You should compare these with the microsoft surface and an Ipad. Cause when you use an Microsoft pen, there are many functions in Onenote that can help you in your Notetaking process. With the Side button you can easily Select parts of your notes with the lasso and if you turn your pen fast you can erase so fast with the back of the pen. I think there are many features of OneNote, that you forgot and which are useful. I hope you can make another video with comparisons and collect new Features. :) Have a nice Day ~Lars
