What do you do when the channel is smaller at the opening then opens up wider at the bottom?

Being smaller at the opening is the pinch factor needed to retain the glass into the channel. In selecting tape for that instance, I would measure both dimensions (top of channel, and bottom of channel) and use the middle of those 2 dimensions to pick my tape. One critical thing would be to round the edge of the top of the channel where the tape will slide against, if not rounded off the tape will be cut by a sharp edge while setting the glass into the channel.

Would you recommend using kerosene on the tape for better setting? Thank you.

No. You can warm it up with a heat gun or hair dryer to get it pliable. It doesn't need much.

No sealant on the side-vent window??

This is a butyl tape that grips and seals the frame against the glass. In fact there's no sealant used anywhere with these vent assemblies.
