Should Black History Be Taught All Year?

Firstifall, I am against the whole concept of BLACK History, as if our truth needs to be approved by others to be validated. Simply include our stories in the American narrative, where it belongs point blank. Then dedicate the month of February to celebrate Black Excellence-- past to present.

the black history debate is another problem of systemic racism. The history of black people has now been made an "other" category. American History is what has happen within America, European history refers to Europe and African History refers to the continent of Africa. AMERICAN history need to be taught and include all colors and all the people that impacted America. African American history or Native American History can be electives but that does not exclude that both still NEED to be included in curriculums and ARE a part of American history, MLK is just as vital as FDR.

It already is taught all year. Just depends on who and where and what exactly about Black History is being taught. The question is very problematic especially for this network

◾Adrienne, if you learned about Ancient Greece, have you learned about the Greek🇬🇷 (300,000 - 900,000 people) genocide of 1915? Or Armenian🇦🇲 (> than 1.5 million people) and Assyrian (500,000 - 700,000 people) genocide of 1915?
◽How these people were sent to death marches into the Syrian desert (can reach up to 125 degrees Fahrenheit and nailed to a cross to mock them of religion?
🔻The Triumvirate of Pashas and the Techir law?
🔻The Adana massacres and those that took place even before that against native Christians?
🔻Do you know why eastern Turkey is now "scarcely populated"?
◾Do you know where the word "genocide" comes from? Why was it invented by Rafael Lemkin?
◾Do you know that those genocides were a Precursor to the Holocaust?
◾Do you know Hitler's Obersalzberg Speech?...
      No, you do not.
⛔That's why history keeps repeating itself
P.S. No colonial country (aka the UK + plus its former colonies, Russia, Turkey will ever let the history of the indigenous people like those that I've mentioned, Native Americans and African Americans etc. to be told. Not on a state level on a large scale. Cause that is a part of white washing their crimes and making people forget where they come from and their history.

I think also Americans need to let go of the idea of 'Kings and Queens in Africa'. I get why the narrative is so attractive but some people were farmers, cleaners, cooks etc. and there is absolutely no shame in that. There are still worthy and deserving of respect and recognition of their humanity and dignity.

I don't think that way of thinking is saying that ALL black folks in Africa were royalty but that SOME of us were. It's important to realize since we live in a country where every single one of us was deemed a sub-human.

I say this mostly because I feel that this narrative fed into this wakanda-like view of Africa to oppose the nonsense people have been taught the continent is. Each and every countries is complex and has some truly sad and horrifying parts to it and even more amazing and developed (pls don't read developed as just westernised) parts. I had to unlearn that because it fed into feeling like I had to be a model minority and I now think it can cause a more reductive view of Africa and its people's humanity.

Like this month shouldn’t be the only month which is the SHORTEST btw to let that be a thing... I think all history should be told accurately and fairly

  • @MajesticMyronn

Erykah’s advice could go both ways though... we talked about this a few seasons ago where communication is needed in a relationship for it to work but communication needs to be 75% Listening and 25% Talking... If you seek to understand rather than to be understood a lot of the small issues that become bigger due to arguing wouldn’t be the way they are now if you listen to listen rather than listen to respond !!! You gotta let your man be open to you and allow him to get his point across and speak his feelings! Make that man feel secure in knowing that you’re his best friend and his support system no matter what !

I also think it would be better if they had Native American Studies/Latino Studies/African American/Asian/Middle Eastern studies for one semester from elementary through high school. That way the younger generation can continue learning about different cultures throughout their formative years.

They need to teach Black history in all schools in the U.S.! Black people have contributed so much to the history of the U.S. they made the U.S. what it is today! Black people have influenced everything from culture, looks, music, etc. Also, they need to teach racism in all schools especially for white folks. Black people, POC, and indigenous people talk about racism in their own homes, but you never see white people talking about what racism is. The people who get discriminated against always educate their own kind of what racism is, but you never see the people who do the discriminating ever get educated about what they're doing wrong.

Fun fact the Taíno's weren't indian, they're simply the indigenous people of the Carribean islands. Christopher Columbus & co. called them indians because they're skin was brown the same as Native Americans who aren't American indians!

It's just a warning. Sometimes in relationships people get comfortable and can't see beyond what makes them happy and that saying I think is a little reminder that your partner can always find that extra....(just like you could) so to put in effort, listen to your partner, make them feel appreciated, go the extra mile, etc. (Of course they should be doing the same for you.)

@@Rio_Monique No in reality I'm right. When you factor in that most women have to work in order to support their housing costs, travel costs, food costs, car costs, emergency costs, utilities cost, phone costs, and maybe even child or children costs, that's a lot to factor into everyday life. Then add a man who's nagging you for this that and the third, and let's just say the third is having sex in random ass places or better yet a threesome, and then he says if you won't another woman will....like tf??? That man never cared and only liked what he had in the moment. So he can leave. I for one am an independent woman, and dont tolerate bullshit ultimatums.

I definitely think we have the same problem in South Africa because the history i learnt in primary school and junior high school was just selective. However, with the kind of history that our country and continent has i guess that was and still is convenient for some.

Adrienne is right..we here in Kenya know all about the world war, European Union, Asian history, and world population etc etc ...with the way we consume western content we have taken that into our day to day lives like the colonizer is deep-rooted in our society it is insane(neo-colonialism) I personally do not mind but we have neglected our own cultures and seriously adopted western culture sometimes fused with own. We lack identity because our cultures have been rapidly eroded over the years.

To this day, it makes me so angry that I didn't know anything about Kathrine Johnson, Mary Jackson, or Dorothy Vaughan until Hidden Figures came out. How are three mathematicians who happen to be black and women not considered important enough to have in school curriculum? There are so many REAL heroes in various cultures in America that we have never been told about. Our education system needs to be restructured ASAP.

#1... First and for most, teach the beginning of America, the true beginning. Teach children about Native Americans. Teach about their culture and traditions. Teach them about all the tribes and languages still spoken in the United States. Teach American children about how this isn't white land. This is Native American land. Teach them this IS stolen land and we continue to disrespect and mistreat Native Americans.

What year was Hispanic Heritage month created? I don't remember learning or celebrating it while in school. I didn't even know Asian American heritage month existed until few years ago. Black history month is memorable to me because it's widely spoken about in school, public places, and in media. I do agree they should expand it though and make sure it's accurate to history. Maybe they need to add Black history as an elective so we can learn about it in-depth. Schools should offer more electives! I felt like there wasn't much for me to choose from that interested me. School needs a whole revamp! It's a lot to learn and I guess not enough years.
